Adoption of Bluetooth wireless technology has become ubiquitous in the last few years. One of the biggest steps forward is the standardization of Java APIs for Bluetooth wireless technology (JABWT). The latest updates to this standard is explained in detail in this book. The JABWT standard, defined by the JSR-82 Java Specification Request, supports rapid development of Bluetooth applications that are portable, secure, and highly-usable. Wireless device manufacturers have responded overwhelmingly to the JABWT specification by implementing JABWT applications in mobile phones and other personal wireless communications products.
"Bluetooth Application Programming Essentials: Programming with the Java APIs" explains in detail how to write Bluetooth applications using the Java APIs to exploit the power of both technologies. Written by the specification lead for JSR-82 and two other key participants in developing the standards of JABWT, this book provides the authoritative explanations and concrete examples needed to get started right away.
This book provides embedded Java developers with to-the-point information on the APIs in the specification with detailed programmatic examples of the APIs in use. A NEW chapter on the Push Registry definition (a new feature in the 1.1 version of JSR-82) has been added. Finally, the new Essentials version of the book will update the remaining chapters to reflect changes in the latest Bluetooth spec (2.1) and the industry as a whole.
As a bonus, this edition of the book offers over 200 pages of added content on the website. This "bonus material" includes complete source code from examples in the book, the javex.bluetooth code package, the java.obex code package, an enhanced set of "Example Applications", and a tutorial on "Implementing JABWT on a Device." These code-heavy sections are actually more effective in electonic format where the application can be easily downloaded.
KEY FEATURES & BENEFITS
* By focusing only on the essentials, this concise resource enables software and hardware vendors to quickly develop Bluetooth applications for mobile devices in an increasingly competitive market.
* The updated material examines crucial programming areas (including RFCOMM, OBEX, device discovery, service discovery, and L2CAP), which allows developers to not only successfully design, but master and build Java APIs for Bluetooth Wireless Technology.
* Includes a new and valuable chapter that delineates the pivotal Push Registry feature ? a recent development that will help programmers avoid the common problem of connection collision.
* By providing real-world issues and problems involved in implementing the Java APIs specification, the book allows developers to identify with the text and encourages repeated reference.

More and more Web sites are being rewritten as Ajax applications; even traditional desktop software is rapidly moving to the Web via Ajax. But, all too often, this transition is being made with reckless disregard for security. If Ajax applications aren’t designed and coded properly, they can be susceptible to far more dangerous security vulnerabilities than conventional Web or desktop software. Ajax developers desperately need guidance on securing their applications: knowledge that’s been virtually impossible to find, until now.
Ajax Security systematically debunks today’s most dangerous myths about Ajax security, illustrating key points with detailed case studies of actual exploited Ajax vulnerabilities, ranging from MySpace’s Samy worm to MacWorld’s conference code validator. Even more important, it delivers specific, up-to-the-minute recommendations for securing Ajax applications in each major Web programming language and environment, including .NET, Java, PHP, and even Ruby on Rails. You’ll learn how to:
· Mitigate unique risks associated with Ajax, including overly granular Web services, application control flow tampering, and manipulation of program logic
· Write new Ajax code more safely—and identify and fix flaws in existing code
· Prevent emerging Ajax-specific attacks, including JavaScript hijacking and persistent storage theft
· Avoid attacks based on XSS and SQL Injection—including a dangerous SQL Injection variant that can extract an entire backend database with just two requests
· Leverage security built into Ajax frameworks like Prototype, Dojo, and ASP.NET AJAX Extensions—and recognize what you still must implement on your own
· Create more secure “mashup” applications
Ajax Security will be an indispensable resource for developers coding or maintaining Ajax applications; architects and development managers planning or designing new Ajax software, and all software security professionals, from QA specialists to penetration testers.

Visual Basic 2005, together with the .NET Framework, provides a wonderfully powerful development environment. With these tools, developers can build amazingly powerful applications relatively quickly and easily.
With this power, however, comes great complexity. Many books are available that discuss the Visual Basic language, and if you need to build a relatively simple application, those are generally sufficient. No books, however, address the complex issues that surround the development of more complicated Visual Basic applications. None discuss design, modeling, user-interface design, or testing for Visual Basic applications.
This book is intended for advanced Visual Basic programmers. It assumes that you already have experience with Visual Basic 2005 and are comfortable with the language. The book does not cover any language fundamentals, and does not include any refresher material. If you feel that you need more experience with Visual Basic, see my book Visual Basic 2005 Programmer’s Reference (Indianapolis: Wiley, 2005).

Laptops–call them notebooks, portable computers, or whatever else you like–are tightly engineered items. It's hard to get all the required components to obey stringent performance and power-management requirements, and still fit into a small case. The job usually requires a custom motherboard and other specialized components, and so the laptop owner who wants to upgrade his or her machine faces a much more difficult task than the owner of a desktop machine with a similar wish. One can swap out the hard drive, add more RAM, and make tweaks in software, but almost everything else requires the addition of external components, which kind of defeat the purpose of a laptop. That's the message the reader takes away from Scott Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing Laptops. It's not Mueller's fault that such computers are hard to do much with, and that your best upgrade procedure is often a visit to an auction site.
Topics covered: How portable computers work (and sometimes fail to work), and how to diagnose their woes. Sections address general troubleshooting concepts, system disassembly, and various subsystems such as memory, CPU, storage, and video. Coverage of PCMCIA (PC Card) is particularly good.

As a PHP developer, you have some great tools for developing web applications. Ruby on Rails is another key tool to add to your web development toolbox. Rails is a high-level web development framework that emphasizes high productivity and clean code. However, the Ruby language and Rails framework take a different approach from the way many PHP developers write applications.
Ruby lies at the foundation of Rails, and we'll teach you the Ruby language from the beginning by building on your existing foundation of PHP. We'll explore Ruby through parallel code examples that illustrate the differences between the languages, and help you understand the Ruby idioms and how they differ from popular PHP code and style.
You'll then learn the Rails framework by iteratively building a complete application, starting from the home page through to a finished product. Along the way, you'll build your skills as a Rails developer by learning the Rails fundamentals such as MVC structure, domain modeling, and testing.

Microsoft ASP.NET has taken many of the best active server technologies and combined them into one powerful set of coding instructions which allow interaction between the user and the server. Today's companies and their customers rely on a back-and-forth flow of data that can be specific and more importantly, updated based on individual requests for information. Why is this important? A customer shopping at an e-store can have specific pages generated and delivered based on their shopping habits. As they continue to shop or change their habits, the information can be updated, or even updated at their request. In this seven hour tutorial, Certified Instructor Mark Long will introduce and then expand on Microsoft's ASP.NET.
- What is ASP.NET?
- Course Overview
- History of ASP
- What's Different About ASP.NET?

If you're a web developer, you know that you can use Ajax to add rich, user-friendly, dynamic features to your applications. With the Google Web Toolkit (GWT), a new Ajax tool from Google that automatically converts Java to JavaScript, you can build Ajax applications using the Java language.
GWT in Practice is an example-driven, code-rich book designed for web developers already familiar with the basics of GWT who now want hands-on experience. After a quick review of GWT fundamentals, GWT in Practice presents scores of handy, reusable solutions to the problems you face when you need to move beyond "Hello World" and "proof of concept" applications. This book skips the theory and looks at the way things really work when you're building. I also shows you where GWT fits into the Enterprise Java Developer's toolset. Written by expert authors Robert Cooper and Charlie Collins, this book combines sharp insight with hard-won experience. Readers will find thorough coverage of all aspects of GWT development from the basic GWT concepts to in depth real world example applications.
The first part of the book is a rapid introduction to the GWT methodology The second part of the book then delves into several practical examples which further demonstrate core aspects of the toolkit The book concludes by presenting several larger GWT applications including drag and drop support for UI elements, data binding, processing streaming data, handling application state, automated builds, and continuous integration.
Along the way GWT in Practice covers many additional facets of working with the toolkit. Various development tools are used throughout the book, including Eclipse, NetBeans, IDEA, Ant, Maven, and, of course, the old fashioned command line. The book also addresses integrating GWT with existing applications and services along with enterprise and team development.

We have tried to retain the brevity of the first edition. C is not a big language, and it is not well served by a big book. We have improved the exposition of critical features, such as pointers, that are central to C programming. We have refined the original examples, and have added new examples in several chapters. For instance, the treatment of complicated declarations is augmented by programs that convert declarations into words and vice versa. As before, all examples have been tested directly from the text, which is in machine-readable form.Download Here

GPRS is a packet based wireless communication service that offers data rates from 9.05 up to 171.2 Kbps and continuous connection to the Internet for mobile phone and computer users. GPRS is based on GSM communications and complements existing services such as circuit switched cellular phone connections and the Short Message Service (SMS).
GPRS represents the bridge between 2G and 3G mobile telecommunications and is commonly referred to as 2.5G.
Implementation of GPRS requires modification of the existing GSM networks in that GSM is a circuit switched technology while GPRS is packet oriented. GPRS enables packet data (the same as is used by an Ethernet LAN, WAN or the Internet) to be sent to and from a mobile station - e.g. mobile phone, PDA or Laptop.
WAP and SMS can also be sent using GPRS and individuals working with GPRS need to learn and understand how the mobile stations, the air interface, network architecture, protocol structures and signalling procedures must be modified.
GPRS offers much higher data rates than GSM and can be combined with 3G technologies such as EDGE to give even higher bit-rates. It offers many benefits for customers and network operators: such as volume (rather then time) dependent billing and more efficient use of network resources.
Due to the worldwide delay in implementing 3G solutions such as CDMA and UMTS the demand for GPRS is still growing.
GPRS Networks:
*Offers detailed information ranging from standards to practical implementation
*Answers 'how' and 'why' rather than just simply re-stating GPRS specifications
*Provides comprehensive coverage in a single volume
Essential reading for all telecommunications project managers, field engineers, technical staff in network operator and manufacturing organisations, GPRS application and service developers, Datacoms/IT engineers.
The comprehensive coverage also makes this a superb reference for students of computer science, telecommunications and electrical engineering.

Search Engine Optimization, is sorely misunderstood for the most part by Internet Marketers. They think this is stuff for 'geeks only', but in reality, you should really LOVE these 3 words. You see, a properly optimized website, is like a magnet to search engines and attracts website visitors the same way moths are attracted to a light bulb on a dark night, and this sort of traffic that you get from the Search Engines is called "Organic Search Engine Traffic".
Organic Search Engine Traffic is simply put, "Type-In Traffic". People arrive at your website because they typed in a keyword or a phrase that is relevant to your website, and because your site had proper optimization, your site shows up in the first few positions of the search results and gets the click-thru from the searcher.

Since the emergence of Google Maps 12 months ago, Ajax programming techniques have become one of the hottest topics in the programming arena. To date, the frameworks available for creating these applications have been complex and have separated the development of the client–side Ajax (on the user’s machine) from the server–side supporting technology (on the company’s machines). This separation has made development slow and difficult.
ASP.NET AJAX is Microsoft’s solution to this problem. ASP.NET AJAX (formerly code–named Atlas) is a set of extensions to the existing ASP.NET 2.0 technology that provides you with a fast-and-simple environment to create Ajax applications. Microsoft has combined Ajax with ASP.NET technology and provided a unified set of development tools within Visual Studio 2005. For the first time, Ajax applications can be developed seamlessly in conjunction with a supporting technology.
Foundations of ASP.NET AJAX (written by Laurence Moroney the author of Apress successful Foundations of Atlas) gives you a detailed grounding in how ASP.NET AJAX works. It takes you swiftly through the basic principles of Ajax, then deep into the heart of the technology, where every namespace is discussed and every function considered. By the end of the book, you’ll know all the essentials to confidently produce cutting-edge ASP.NET AJAX applications swiftly and professionally. You will not need any reference beyond this book.

C# in Depth is a completely new book designed to propel existing C# developers to a higher level of programming skill. One simple principle drives this book: explore a few things deeply rather than offer a shallow view of the whole C# landscape. If you often find yourself wanting just a little more at the end of a typical chapter, this is the book for you.
Expert author Jon Skeet dives into the C# language, plumbing new C# 2 and 3 features and probing the core C# language concepts that drive them. This unique book puts the new features into context of how C# has evolved without a lengthy rehearsal of the full C# language.
C# in Depth briefly examines the history of C# and the .NET framework and reviews a few often-misunderstood C# 1 concepts that are very important as the foundation for fully exploiting C# 2 and 3. Because the book addresses C# 1 with a light touch, existing C# developers don't need to pick through the book in order to find new material to enhance their skills.
This book focuses on the C# 2 and 3 versions of the language, but clearly explains where features are supported by changes in the runtime (CLR) or use new framework classes. Each feature gets a thorough explanation, along with a look on how you'd use it in real life applications.
C# in Depth is both a vehicle for learning C# 2 and 3 and a reference work. Although the coverage is in-depth, the text is always accessible: You'll explore pitfalls that can trip you up, but you'll skip over gnarly details best left to the language specification. The overall effect is that readers become not just proficient in C# 2 and 3, but comfortable that they truly understand the language.

Once again, Robert Sedgewick provides a current and comprehensive introduction to important algorithms. The focus this time is on graph algorithms, which are increasingly critical for a wide range of applications, such as network connectivity, circuit design, scheduling, transaction processing, and resource allocation. In this book, Sedgewick offers the same successful blend of theory and practice that has made his work popular with programmers for many years. Michael Schidlowsky and Sedgewick have developed concise new Java implementations that both express the methods in a natural and direct manner and also can be used in real applications.
Algorithms in Java, Third Edition, Part 5: Graph Algorithms is the second book in Sedgewick's thoroughly revised and rewritten series. The first book, Parts 1-4, addresses fundamental algorithms, data structures, sorting, and searching. A forthcoming third book will focus on strings, geometry, and a range of advanced algorithms. Each book's expanded coverage features new algorithms and implementations, enhanced descriptions and diagrams, and a wealth of new exercises for polishing skills. The natural match between Java classes and abstract data type (ADT) implementations makes the code more broadly useful and relevant for the modern object-oriented programming environment.
The Web site for this book (www.cs.princeton.edu/~rs/) provides additional source code for programmers along with a variety of academic support materials for educators.
Coverage includes:
A complete overview of graph properties and types
Diagraphs and DAGs
Minimum spanning trees
Shortest paths
Network flows
Diagrams, sample Java code, and detailed algorithm descriptions
A landmark revision, Algorithms in Java, Third Edition, Part 5 provides a complete tool set for programmers to implement, debug, and use graph algorithms across a wide range of computer applications.

This book addresses the fundamental units of Windows and .NET programming - threads. A strong understanding of the role threads play in program execution, how multiple threads can interact in order to make efficient programs, and the pitfalls to beware of when developing multithreaded applications, are all core to a developer's ability to develop effective C# programs. This book will cover how .NET applications are executed, the life cycle of a thread in .NET, how the .NET Framework uses threads, how threads work in an event-driven environment, how we can avoid race conditions and deadlocks, how the activity of multiple threads can be synchronized, and how to debug multithreaded applications. We finish it off by describing the creation of a multithreaded network application.
What is great about this book?
Threads are fundamental to the way GUI and server applications operate; if your code is running in a GUI, then you're already writing code in a threaded environment. An ASP.NET page also runs in a threaded environment. This book aims to cover the tricky issues of threading in .NET, and particularly to do so from the perspective of C# developers. Threading is by nature not easy to grasp, but a necessary step towards mastery of programming for the .NET platform.

Is this book for programmers? Written specifically for graphic designers and production artists already comfortable working with Adobe InDesign, this book teaches you how to automate publishing without learning a lot of scary code. XML simplifies the process of moving content in and out of your layouts and can speed up any print or Web assignment.
Why should I care about XML? If you’re managing data-intensive layout projects, and you want to keep that data consistent, accurate, and up-to-date, then incorporating XML can help. You can also use XML to automate processes like importing text and large numbers of graphics into a layout, or repurposing content from one application to another. Do I need additional plug-ins or special software? You need only the powerful features built into InDesign CS2 or CS3 to use this book.
How will I learn XML? This guide includes nine easy-to-follow projects with downloadable support files. With these hands-on tutorials, you will learn XML in context. By the final project, XML will no longer be a mystery, but a powerful tool you can use to support your company or clients.
These real-world projects will teach you:
l Business cards: Create a structured layout in InDesign and then import XML. Format text automatically and flow the text into multiple examples.
l Product catalog: Learn how to import XML data into a structured layout using nested styles and cloned text.
l Direct mail and variable data printing: Use XML and InDesign to create sophisticated direct mail pieces without costly plug-ins or third-party software.

Imagine a world without eBay…unthinkable! How would you get that Farrah Fawcett poster, retired Beanie Baby, or first-edition pet rock? Handling over a gazillion (OK, we exaggerate–it's actually only 1 billion) page views each day, server-side Java makes eBay work.
Isn't it time you learned the latest (J2EE 1.4) versions of Servlets & JSPs? This book will get you way up to speed on the technology you'll know it so well, in fact, that you can pass the Sun Certified Web Component Developer (SCWCD) 1.4 exam. If that's what you want to do, that is. Maybe you don't care about the exam, but need to use Servlets & JSPs in your next project. You're working on a deadline. You're over the legal limit for caffeine. You can't waste your time with a book that makes sense only AFTER you're an expert (or worse one that puts you to sleep).
No problem. Head First Servlets and JSP's brain-friendly approach drives the knowledge straight into your head (without sharp instruments). You'll interact with servlets and JSPs in ways that help you learn quickly and deeply. It may not be The Da Vinci Code, but quickly see why so many reviewers call it "a page turner". Most importantly, this book will help you use what you learn. It won't get you through the exam only to have you forget everything the next day.
Learn to write servlets and JSPs, what makes the Container tick (and what ticks it off), how to use the new JSP Expression Language (EL), what you should NOT write in a JSP, how to write deployment descriptors, secure applications, and even use some server-side design patterns. Can't talk about Struts at a cocktail party? That'll change. You won't just pass the exam, you will truly understand this stuff, and you'll be able to put it to work right away.
This new exam is tough–much tougher than the previous version of the SCWCD. The authors of Head First Servlets and JSP know: they created it. (Not that it EVER occurred to them that if they made the exam really hard you'd have to buy a study guide to pass it.) The least they could do is give you a stimulating, fun way to pass the thing. If you're one of the thousands who used Head First EJB to pass the SCWCD exam, you know what to expect!

If you're interested in recording and streaming media using Flash Media Server 3 (FMS3) and Adobe's Real-Time Messaging Protocol, this unique 267-page PDF-only book is the perfect primer. It is not a reference, but a systematic guide to developing FMS3 applications using ActionScript 3.0, with chapters that focus on specific aspects of the server and how they work.
FMS3 is very different from regular web servers. Because its open-socket server technology stays connected until users quit the application, you can stream audio, video, text, and other media in real time. FMS3 is also quite different from previous versions, a fact that web developers familiar with Flash Media Server 2 or Flash Communication Server 1.5 will quickly discover.
Don't worry. With Learning Flash Media Server 3 and a little experience with Flash CS3 and ActionScript 3.0, anyone can get up to speed in no time. You'll learn how to install FMS3, organize your development environment with Apache web server, and use the management console before diving into the whys and hows of:
- Recording and playing back streaming audio and video in VP6 and H.264 formats
- Using the new Flash Media Encoder to stream and record video
- Camera and microphone settings
- Non-persistent client-side remote shared objects
- Two-way audio-video communications
- Broadcasting and server-side bandwidth control
- Working with server-side files: the file class
- Server-side shared objects
- Server-side streams
- Setting up a software load handler using FMS3's new server-side NetStream
- Bringing in data and working with configuration files
At the heart of every chapter is a core set of code that shows the minimum requirements needed for different procedures. Beyond that, Learning Flash Media Server 3 provides you with plenty of options for using FMS3's different versions — the full-feature server, the streaming-only server, and the limited-user development server. It's a whole new world of media, and this book puts you right at the doorstep. Ready to enter?

In a nutshell, this book is for people who are clueless about computers and want to stop being that way. It’s a book for people who have Windows Vista on their computers, but aren’t sure why, or what they’re supposed to do with it. It’s a book about using your computer to do the things that most people want to do, including (but not limited to) those activities described in the aforementioned title-with-too-many-words.
This is a book for people who have never touched a computer in their lives or have just enough experience to want to touch their PC extremely hard with a sledgehammer. It’s a book for people who either don’t realize yet, or have come to realize the hard way, that when it comes to using a PC, the following is dead-bang true: "Guessing doesn’t work."
If you can read the following sentence and picture clearly how, when, and why you want to do what it says, this may not be the right book for you:
Right-drag the selected items to the destination folder, drop, and then choose Copy Here or Move Here, depending on which you want to do, from the shortcut menu.
this is a book for people who can read the above sentence and honestly say, “I have no idea what he’s talking about.”

Many would–be software entrepreneurs with expertise in many fields attempt to turn a homegrown application—one developed for use in their own business or profession—into a commercial product. Lack of knowledge, experience, or skills often prevents the idea from ever taking shape, let alone achieving its potential. Entering a new field to start a business leaves many developers unprepared and not even fully aware it’s something they know so little about. They will also often have a job that conflicts with the time commitment required to market the program well enough for it to become a complete success.
Do you have an idea for a commercially viable software product or already have a product with the potential for dream financial rewards? Would–be software entrepreneurs must consult From Program to Product: Turning Your Code into a Saleable Product, written by software developer and entrepreneur Rocky Smolin, for an indispensable roadmap to creating a commercially successful software product. Smolin shares insights from his own experience and covers topics you may never anticipate but are vital to success, like pricing, documentation, licensing, and tracking customers.
What you’ll learn
Rocky Smolin walks you through the essentials of turning a development project into a product, including
- How to determine the best method of licensing your work and how to enforce that license
- Choosing the appropriate price, calculating potential revenue, and selecting payment methods, including leasing and support options
- Selling products direct to the customer, through retailers, and via other sales channels
- Managing technical considerations within your development project, including logos, splash screens, output, error trapping and reporting, and localization/internationalization
- Creating attractive packaging and developing an appearance for the product, including within the application itself, supporting documentation, and in external components
- Handling marketing, sales, and administration—learn product differentiation, lead generation, prospect tracking, and customer follow–ups

Is Ajax a new technology, or the same old stuff web developers have been using for years? Both, actually. This book demonstrates not only how tried-and-true web standards make Ajax possible, but how these older technologies allow you to give sites a decidedly modern Web 2.0 feel. Ajax: The Definitive Guide explains how to use standards like JavaScript, XML, CSS, and XHTML, along with the XMLHttpRequest object, to build browser-based web applications that function like desktop programs. You get a complete background on what goes into today's web sites and applications, and learn to leverage these tools along with Ajax for advanced browser searching, web services, mashups, and more. You discover how to turn a web browser and web site into a true application, and why developing with Ajax is faster, easier and cheaper. The book also explains: How to connect server-side backend components to user interfaces in the browser Loading and manipulating XML documents, and how to replace XML with JSON Manipulating the Document Object Model (DOM) Designing Ajax interfaces for usability, functionality, visualization, and accessibility Site navigation layout, including issues with Ajax and the browser's back button Adding life to tables & lists, navigation boxes and windows Animation creation, interactive forms, and data validation Search, web services and mash-ups Applying Ajax to business communications, and creating Internet games without plug-ins The advantages of modular coding, ways to optimize Ajax applications, and more This book also provides references to XML and XSLT, popular JavaScript Frameworks, Libraries, and Toolkits, and various Web Service APIs. By offering web developers a muchbroader set of tools and options, Ajax gives developers a new way to create content on the Web, while throwing off the constraints of the past. Ajax: The Definitive Guide describes the contents of this unique toolbox in exhaustive detail, and explains how to get the most out of it.

At any given moment, somewhere in the world someone struggles with the same software design problems you have. You know you don't want to reinvent the wheel (or worse, a flat tire), so you look to Design Patterns–the lessons learned by those who've faced the same problems. With Design Patterns, you get to take advantage of the best practices and experience of others, so that you can spend your time on…something else. Something more challenging. Something more complex. Something more fun.
You want to learn about the patterns that matter–why to use them, when to use them, how to use them (and when NOT to use them). But you don't just want to see how patterns look in a book, you want to know how they look "in the wild". In their native environment. In other words, in real world applications. You also want to learn how patterns are used in the Java API, and how to exploit Java's built-in pattern support in your own code.
You want to learn the real OO design principles and why everything your boss told you about inheritance might be wrong (and what to do instead). You want to learn how those principles will help the next time you're up a creek without a design pattern.Download Here

Tired of reading HTML books that only make sense after you're an expert? Then it's about time you picked up Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML and really learned HTML. You want to learn HTML so you can finally create those web pages you've always wanted, so you can communicate more effectively with friends, family, fans, and fanatic customers. You also want to do it right so you can actually maintain and expand your Web pages over time, and so your web pages work in all the browsers and mobile devices out there. Oh, and if you've never heard of CSS, that's okay - we won't tell anyone you're still partying like it's 1999 - but if you're going to create Web pages in the 21st century then you'll want to know and understand CSS.
Learn the real secrets of creating Web pages, and why everything your boss told you about HTML tables is probably wrong (and what to do instead). Most importantly, hold your own with your co-worker (and impress cocktail party guests) when he casually mentions how his HTML is now strict, and his CSS is in an external style sheet. With Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML, you'll avoid the embarrassment of thinking web-safe colors still matter, and the foolishness of slipping a font tag into your pages. Best of all, you'll learn HTML and CSS in a way that won't put you to sleep. If you've read a Head First book, you know what to expect: a visually-rich format designed for the way your brain works. Using the latest research in neurobiology, cognitive science, and learning theory, this book will load HTML, CSS, and XHTML into your brain in a way that sticks.

Here's a handy household hint - getting control of all the clutter on your PC will make it run faster and more efficiently. This book is like a closet full of cleaning tools that help you organize your data and e-mail, archive the stuff you do need to keep, toss old cookies, tune up your file system, and much more.
Your computer does get messy; have no doubt about it. Programs load and unload, files pop into existence and then slither off to unknown parts of your hard drive, and spyware tries to adhere itself to your operating system. Every day, your system changes as information is added and new demands are placed on old programs.
All these things add to the unique clutter that comes to define and weigh down your system. You can redefine your system and free your system, all by identifying and removing the clutter. Cleaning Windows Vista For Dummies shows you how.
I’m a firm believer that you should read this book out loud, while standing on the coffee table in your neighbor’s living room. It surely will make an impression on the neighbor’s kids and free up time you previously spent going to dinner parties.
Whether you decide to read this book out loud or not, you should read the first two chapters before reading any others. Dire consequences won’t result if you decide not to, but those chapters lay a pretty good foundation for everything else you find in the book.

This book is a record of my in-depth exploration of several prerelease versions of Windows Vista, Microsoft's next major operating system (OS) and the successor to Windows XP. Don't have Windows Vista yet? That's not a problem because this is not a "how-to" book. Instead, it's more of a "what-is" book. That is, Windows Vista Unveiled takes you on a detailed tour of all the new and improved technologies, features, tools, and programs that the Microsoft programmers have stitched into the Vista fabric.
You'll learn not only what features are new in Vista, but also why they're important (or not), who they were designed for, and how they will affect your computing life. My goal is to give you an exhaustive sneak preview of Vista's innovations and changes so that by the end of the book you know whether Vista is for you and what to expect when you sit down in front of this new OS.
All writers write with an audience in mind. Actually, I'm not sure whether that's true for novelists and poets and the like, but it should be true for any technical writer who wants to create a useful and comprehensible book. Here are the members of my own imagined audience:
- IT professionals
- Developers
- Power users
- Business users
- Road warriors
- Small business owners
- Multimedia users
- Gamers

The book was quite controversial, particularly because open discussion of addiction and other "moral faults" was taboo before and during the Victorian era. De Quincey gave one of the first literary accounts of the effects of the drug in a time where the drug's negative side-effects were not well understood.
It is characterised by its vivid descriptions of uncontrollable urges and withdrawal-induced nightmares, which range from the euphoric to the disturbing. By the end of the book De Quincey is unable to control his visions, which become increasingly real and terrifying.Download Here

Don’t try to read this book in one sitting; there’s no need. Instead, treat this book like a dictionary or an encyclopedia. Turn to the page with the information you need and say, “Ah, so that’s what they’re talking about.” Then put down the book and move on.
Don’t bother trying to memorize all the Windows Vista jargon, such as Select the Menu Item from the Drop-Down List Box. Leave that stuff for the computer enthusiasts. In fact, if anything technical comes up in a chapter, a road sign warns you well in advance. Depending on your mood, you can either slow down to read it or speed on around it.
When something in Windows Vista leaves you stumped, use this book as a reference. Look for the troublesome topic in this book’s table of contents or index. The table of contents lists chapter and section titles and page numbers. The index lists topics and page numbers. Page through the table of contents or index to the spot that deals with that particular bit of computer obscurity, read only what you have to, close the book, and apply what you’ve read.

Why I Wrote This Book? I approached this project with one goal in mind: To write the ultimate Excel book that would appeal to a broad base of users. That's a fairly ambitious goal. But based on the feedback I received from the first three editions, I think I've accomplished it.
This is not a book for beginning Excel users. If you have absolutely no experience with Excel, this is probably not the best book for you-unless you're one of a rare breed who can learn a new software product almost instantaneously.
I wrote this book for Excel 2007. If you're using an older version of Excel, I suggest that you put down this book immediately and pick up a previous edition. The changes in Excel 2007 are so extensive that you might be hopelessly confused if you try to follow along using an earlier version of Excel.

The purpose of this book is to propose a teaching approach to understand how viruses are encrypted (encoded – we use the two words interchangeably), and how to reverse-engineering the process of encrypting, it also introduced some techniques you can use in any program most importantly Scripts like in Perl, VBScript, JavaScript or web frameworks like ASP.
The first look at an encrypted virus might be not easy, but knowing what’s going inside really will give you the best vision about those viruses and how they works, in fact the VBScript viruses decrypt them selves before they can be executed, so that hackers must include the logic of decryption with their virus, and here comes the weakest point in those viruses.

The GNU Debugger allows you to see what is going on "inside" a program while it executes - or what a program was doing at the moment it crashed.
GDB supports C, C++, Java, Fortran and Assembly among other languages; it is also designed to work closely with the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC).
The GNU Debugger Program has four special features that helps you catch bugs in the act:
* It starts your program for you, specifying anything that might affect it's behavior.
* Makes your program stop under specified conditions.
* Examines what happened when the program stopped.
* Allows you to experiment with changes to see what effect they have on the program.
This book will show you:
* setting and clearing breakpoints
* examining the stack, source files and data
* examining the symbol table
* altering program execution
* specifying a target for debugging
* how to control the debugger
* how to use canned command sequences
* how to install GDB
* and much more!
This manual is written for programmers. It is designed so someone can begin utilizing GDB after just reading the first chapter, or read the whole manual and master the program. Synopsis of ideas and extensive examples are given.

This sixth edition of JavaScript Bible represents knowledge and experience accumulated over ten years of daily work in JavaScript and a constant monitoring of newsgroups for questions, problems, and challenges facing scripters at all levels. My goal is to help you avoid the same frustration and head scratching I and others have experienced through multiple generations of scriptable browsers.
The job of a book claiming to be a bible is not only to present both the standard and proprietary details when they diverge, but also to show you how to write scripts that blend the two so that they work on the wide array of browsers visiting your sites or web applications. Empowering you to design and write good scripts is my passion, regardless of browser. It’s true that my bias is toward industry standards, but not to the exclusion of proprietary features that may be necessary to get your content and scripting ideas flowing equally well on today’s and tomorrow’s browsers.
Although this book doesn’t demand that you have a great deal of programming experience behind you, the more Web pages you’ve created with HTML, the easier you will find it to understand how JavaScript interacts with the familiar elements you normally place in your pages. Occasionally, you will need to modify HTML tags to take advantage of scripting. If you are familiar with those tags already, the JavaScript enhancements will be simple to digest.
Fortunately, you won’t need to know about server scripting or passing information from a form to a server. The focus here is on client-side scripting, which operates independently of the server after the JavaScript-enhanced HTML page is fully loaded into the browser.
The basic vocabulary of the current HTML standard should be part of your working knowledge. You should also be familiar with some of the latest document markup standards, such as XHTML and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). You don’t need to be an expert, by any means. Web searches for these terms will uncover numerous tutorials on the subjects.

Ajax has the potential to revolutionize the Internet as we know it, but with this potential comes equally dangerous new security threats. Ajax Security exposes the minefield of security vulnerabilities inherent in the Ajax framework and provides a guide for developers to safely navigate through it and create a secure application.
Each chapter begins with a myth about Ajax security which is then debunked. Throughout the book, you will find case studies of actual exploited Ajax vulnerabilities to illustrate key points. The authors also include specific recommendations for securing Ajax applications for each of the major Web programming languages (.NET, Java, and PHP) as well as for the popular new language, Ruby on Rails.Download Here

A Developer's Notebook is just what it claims to be: the often-frantic scribbling and notes that a true-blue alpha geek mentally makes when working with a new language, API, or project. It's the no-nonsense code that solves problems, stripped of page-filling commentary that often serves more as a paperweight than an epiphany. It's hackery, focused not on what is nifty or might be fun to do when you've got some free time (when's the last time that happened?), but on what you need to simply "make it work." This isn't a lecture, folksit's a lab. If you want a lot of concept, architecture, and UML diagrams, I'll happily and proudly point you to our animal and nutshell books.
If you want every answer to every problem under the sun, our omnibus cookbooks are killer. And if you are into arcane and often quirky uses of technology, hacks books simply rock. But if you're a coder, down to your core, and you just want to get on with it, then you want a Developer's Notebook. Coffee stains and all, this is from the mind of a developer to yours, barely even cleaned up enough for print. I hope you enjoy it…we sure had a good time writing them.
This book is written for programmers who are already familiar with previous version of C# (C# 1.0 or 1.1) and who have used a previous version of Visual Studio .NET (either 2002 or 2003) to build Windows (Windows Forms) or web-based (ASP.NET) applications. My aim is to introduce you, through a series of hands-on labs, to the new features of the C# 2.0 language, the .NET 2.0 Framework, and the Visual Studio 2005 developer environment.
This book does not try to be exhaustive when it comes to building Windows and web applications with the .NET 2.0 Framework or the Visual Studio 2005 developer environment. The goal is to introduce you to what is new in the language, the development environment, and the class libraries, and to equip you for further exploration of those areas that are likely to be of interest to you.

C# programmers: no more translating data structures from C++ or Java to use in your programs! Mike McMillan provides a tutorial on how to use data structures and algorithms plus the first comprehensive reference for C# implementation of data structures and algorithms found in the .NET Framework library, as well as those developed by the programmer.
The approach is very practical, using timing tests rather than Big O notation to analyze the efficiency of an approach. Coverage includes array and ArrayLists, linked lists, hash tables, dictionaries, trees, graphs, and sorting and searching algorithms, as well as more advanced algorithms such as probabilistic algorithms and dynamic programming. This is the perfect resource for C# professionals and students alike.
This book is written primarily as a practical overview of the data structures and algorithms all serious computer programmers need to know and understand. Given this, there is no formal analysis of the data structures and algorithms covered in the book. Hence, there is not a single mathematical formula and not one mention of Big Oh analysis (if you don’t know what this means, look at any of the books mentioned in the bibliography). Instead, the various data structures and algorithms are presented as problem-solving tools. Simple timing tests are used to compare the performance of the data structures and algorithms discussed in the book.
The only prerequisite for this book is that the reader have some familiarity with the C# language in general, and object-oriented programming in C# in particular.

This book is an invaluable companion to SQL Server 2005 Data Mining. The authors explain the basic principles of each algorithm and visualization tool, and provide many hands-on examples. I am certain that many database developers, database administrators, IT professionals, and students of data mining will benefit from this book.
Data mining is about analyzing data and finding hidden patterns using automatic or semiautomatic means. During the past decade, large volumes of data have been accumulated and stored in databases. Much of this data comes from business software, such as financial applications, Enterprise Resource Management (ERP), Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and Web logs. The result of this data collection is that organizations have become data-rich and knowledge-poor. The collections of data have become so vast and are increasing so rapidly in size that the practical use of these stores of data has become limited. The main purpose of data mining is to extract patterns from the data at hand, increase its intrinsic value and transfer the data to knowledge.
Concealed inside your data warehouse and data marts is a wealth of valuable information just waiting to be discovered. All you need are the right tools to extract that information and put it to use. Serving as your expert guide, this book shows you how to create and implement data mining applications that will find the hidden patterns from your historical datasets. The authors explore the core concepts of data mining as well as the latest trends. They then reveal the best practices in the field, utilizing the innovative features of SQL Server 2005 so that you can begin building your own successful data mining projects.

A classic O'Reilly title since 1993, sendmail now covers Versions 8.10 through 8.14 of this email routing program, including dozens of new features, options, and macros. This edition also takes a more nuts-and-bolts approach than its predecessors. It includes both an administration handbook and a reference guide that provide you with clear options for installing, configuring and managing sendmail's latest versions and companion programs.
The sendmail program has withstood the test of time because of its ability to solve the mail-routing needs of all sites large or small, complex or simple. But it's also difficult to configure and even more difficult to understand. That's why this book has proven valuable since the dawn of email. With it, you will be able to configure the program to meet any need, so that you never again have to call in a sendmail guru to bail you out.
sendmail includes the following sections:
- Some Basics is especially useful for people new to the program. It covers the basic concepts underlying mail delivery and the roles sendmail plays in that delivery
- Administration covers all aspects of handling sendmail, from downloading and installing new releases to managing mailing lists and aliases
- Configuration Reference contains a heavily cross-referenced guide for configuring and tuning sendmail. Every arcane detail of sendmail is listed alphabetically
- Appendices contain more detail about sendmail than you may ever need
This edition also includes new material on SSL and AUTH and a new chapter on Mitlers. If you're interested in what has changed since the last edition, one appendix categorizes the many improvements of sendmail's intervening versions by chapter, complete with references to the appropriate sections and page numbers in the book.
With sendmail, system administrators, programmers, network engineers, and even inexperienced users will be able to match this challenging but necessary utility to the needs of their network.

One weakness of Java has been its graphics capabilities. Java 1.0 and 1.1 only included simple primitives for line drawing: lines could only be one pixel wide, they could only be solid, and there wasn't any good way to draw curves. Font management and color management were also weak. Java 2D (collectively called the "2D API") signals a major improvement in Java's graphics capabilities. It covers many of the classes in Java 1.2 that address graphics handling and improves on many weaknesses that were present in the previous versions of Java. The 2D API allows you to produce high-quality, professional images on a screen or printer. Java 2D Graphics describes the 2D API from top to bottom, demonstrating how to set line styles and pattern fills as well as more advanced techniques of image processing and font handling. You'll see how to create and manipulate the three types of graphics objects: shapes, text, and images. Other topics include image data storage, color management, font glyphs, and printing. Java 2D Graphics assumes no prior knowledge of graphics. Chock full of detailed explanations and examples, this book provides beginning Java programmers with a solid foundation in 2D graphics and helps more advanced programmers create and use high-quality images in their applications.Topics covered in the book include:
- The rendering pipeline
- Shapes and paths
- Geometry
- Painting with solid colors, gradients, and textures
- Stroking paths, including dashed lines
- Transformations: translation, rotation, shearing, and scaling
- Alpha compositing
- Clipping
- Rasterizing and antialiasing
- Fonts and text
- Font metrics
- Glyphs
- Colors and color spaces
- sRGB and CIEXYZ
- ICC color profiles
- Images, image color models, and image data
- Image processing
- Image data storage
- Graphics devices
- Printing

Software developers make their programs ever more graphical; interfaces become ever more slick. But underneath the buttons and sliders, PCs are electronic systems comprising power supplies, logic processors, and specialized circuitry for such functions as video and sound. When the machine grinds to a halt, someone has to know how to identify the problem and get it straightened out. That's the function of the CompTIA A+ certification, and this new edition of Mike Meyers' A+ Certification Passport will help you earn it. Meyers combines reams of detailed information about IBM-standard PCs (which is to say, those running Intel, AMD, and Cyrix) with rock-solid troubleshooting advice. Look here for electronic details of the IDE and SCSI interfaces, as well as strategies for figuring out whether a problem is in a drive or in its controlling electronics.
Meyers has organized his book around the two A+ exams, which means you'll find excellent coverage of the subjects CompTIA includes (hardware from early days through the Pentium III era, and Microsoft MS-DOS and Windows operating systems through Windows 2000). Inversely, you'll find no coverage of potentially useful subjects that CompTIA doesn't test (Linux and Microsoft Windows XP, most notably). Updated coverage–of new USB and FireWire standards, as well as memory specifications–meets the high standard of the previous edition. This book will help you prepare for the A+ exams; it and a couple of supplementary texts will get you ready for the job site. –David Wall

Written for web developers with basic Perl skills, this book guides new users through the open-source Perl-based Model-View-Controller Catalyst framework using real-world examples and systematic code snippets, covering application design, development, testing, and deployment. If you are excited by Ruby on Rails but prefer the familiarity of Perl, get this book and get started. The way that many web applications are implemented makes development painful and repetitive. Catalyst solves this problem, organizing your web application to design and implement it in a natural, maintainable, and testable way. Its philosophies are Do It Yourself and Don't Repeat Yourself. Everything is written only once; database access and configuration are centralized; you just write actions for each URL in your application and Catalyst handles the details. Catalyst is designed to be reliable; the code is well tested; there are hundreds of production applications, thousands of users, and a thriving community.

Rapidly evolving computer and communications technologies have achieved data transmission rates and data storage capacities high enough for digital video. But video involves much more than just pushing bits! Achieving the best possible image quality, accurate color, and smooth motion requires understanding many aspects of image acquisition, coding, processing, and display that are outside the usual realm of computer graphics. At the same time, video system designers are facing new demands to interface with film and computer system that require techniques outside conventional video engineering.
Charles Poynton's 1996 book A Technical Introduction to Digital Video became an industry favorite for its succinct, accurate, and accessible treatment of standard definition television (SDTV). In Digital Video and HDTV, Poynton augments that book with coverage of high definition television (HDTV) and compression systems.
With the help of hundreds of high quality technical illustrations, this book presents the following topics:
* Basic concepts of digitization, sampling, quantization, gamma, and filtering
* Principles of color science as applied to image capture and display
* Scanning and coding of SDTV and HDTV
* Video color coding: luma, chroma (4:2:2 component video, 4fSC composite video)
* Analog NTSC and PAL
* Studio systems and interfaces
* Compression technology, including M-JPEG and MPEG-2
* Broadcast standards and consumer video equipment

This book is aimed at intermediate or experienced programmers who have started on their journey toward ASP.NET development and who are already familiar with XML. While I do introduce the reader to many new ASP.NET 2.0 concepts in Chapter 2, this book is not intended as a first port of call for the developer looking at ASP.NET, since there are already many books and articles covering this area. Instead, I cut straight to the heart of using XML within ASP.NET Web applications. To get the most out of the book, you will have some basic knowledge of C#. All the code examples will be explained in C#.
In a similar vein, there are many books and articles that cover the XML technologies that you will need to use this book. I assume a general knowledge of XML, namespaces, and XSLT, and a basic understanding of XML schemas.
This book explores the array of XML features and how they can be used in ASP.NET for developing Web applications. XML is everywhere in the .NET Framework, from serialization to Web services, and from data access to configuration. In the first part of this book, you’ll find in-depth coverage of the key classes that implement XML in the .NET platform. Readers and writers, validation, schemas, and XML DOM are discussed with ASP.NET samples and reference information. Next the book moves on to XPath and XSL Transformations (XSLT), XML support in ADO.NET and the use of XML for data display.
The final part of this book focuses on SQL Server 2005 XML Features, XML Serialization, XML Web services, and touches on XML based configuration files and its XML extensions. You’ll also find a couple of case studies on the use of XML related features of ASP.NET and Web services that provide you with a real life example on how to leverage these features.

In the five years since the first edition of this classic book was published, Internet use has exploded. The commercial world has rushed headlong into doing business on the Web, often without integrating sound security technologies and policies into their products and methods. The security risks–and the need to protect both business and personal data–have never been greater. We've updated "Building Internet Firewalls" to address these newer risks.
What kinds of security threats does the Internet pose? Some, like password attacks and the exploiting of known security holes, have been around since the early days of networking. And others, like the distributed denial of service attacks that crippled Yahoo, E-Bay, and other major e-commerce sites in early 2000, are in current headlines.
Firewalls, critical components of today's computer networks, effectively protect a system from most Internet security threats. They keep damage on one part of the network–such as eavesdropping, a worm program, or file damage–from spreading to the rest of the network. Without firewalls, network security problems can rage out of control, dragging more and more systems down.
Like the bestselling and highly respected first edition, "Building Internet Firewalls," 2nd Edition, is a practical and detailed step-by-step guide to designing and installing firewalls and configuring Internet services to work with a firewall. Much expanded to include Linux and Windows coverage, the second edition describes:
Firewall technologies: packet filtering, proxying, network address translation, virtual private networks
Architectures such as screening routers, dual-homed hosts, screened hosts, screenedsubnets, perimeter networks, internal firewalls
Issues involved in a variety of new Internet services and protocols through a firewall
Email and News
Web services and scripting languages (e.g., HTTP, Java, JavaScript, ActiveX, RealAudio, RealVideo)
File transfer and sharing services such as NFS, Samba
Remote access services such as Telnet, the BSD "r" commands, SSH, BackOrifice 2000
Real-time conferencing services such as ICQ and talk
Naming and directory services (e.g., DNS, NetBT, the Windows Browser)
Authentication and auditing services (e.g., PAM, Kerberos, RADIUS);
Administrative services (e.g., syslog, SNMP, SMS, RIP and other routing protocols, and ping and other network diagnostics)
Intermediary protocols (e.g., RPC, SMB, CORBA, IIOP)
Database protocols (e.g., ODBC, JDBC, and protocols for Oracle, Sybase, and Microsoft SQL Server)
The book's complete list of resources includes the location of many publicly available firewall construction tools.

In this book, authors Rich Shupe and Zevan Rosser share the knowledge they've gained from their years as multimedia developers/designers and teachers. Learning ActionScript 3.0 gives you a solid foundation in the language of Flash and demonstrates how you can use it for practical, everyday projects. The authors do more than just give you a collection of sample scripts. Written for those of you new to ActionScript 3.0, the book describes how ActionScript and Flash work, giving you a clear look into essential topics such as logic, event handling, displaying content, migrating legacy projects to ActionScript 3.0, classes, and much more. You will learn important techniques through hands-on exercises, and then build on those skills as chapters progress. ActionScript 3.0 represents a significant change for many Flash users, and a steeper learning curve for the uninitiated. This book will help guide you through a variety of scripting scenarios. Rather than relying heavily on prior knowledge of object-oriented programming (OOP), topics are explained in focused examples that originate in the timeline, with optional companion classes for those already comfortable with their use.

BIRT, which stands for Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools, is an Eclipse-based open-source reporting system for Java and J2EE based web applications. Including the word "Tools" in the acronym is appropriate, since BIRT is in fact a collection of development tools and technologies used for developing reports utilizing the BIRT runtime framework component on your application server. BIRT isn't essentially a product, but a series of core technologies on top of which products and solutions are built, similar in fashion to the Eclipse framework. This book has a fast-paced, task-driven, tutorial style, which provides understanding and structure, not just lists of steps to follow. The focus is on the most visible and familiar product built with the BIRT framework, which is the BIRT Report Designer. The BIRT Report Designer is an Eclipse plug-in that utilizes BIRT technologies to allow users to design reports in the BIRT document format. Also covered is the BIRT charting engine, which lets you add charts to your application.

Tagging is fast becoming one of the primary ways people organize and manage digital information. Tagging complements traditional organizational tools like folders and search on users desktops as well as on the web. These developments mean that tagging has broad implications for information management, information architecture and interface design. And its reach extends beyond these technical domains to our culture at large. We can imagine, for example, the scrapbookers of the future curating their digital photos, emails, ticket stubs and other mementos with tags. This book explains the value of tagging, explores why people tag, how tagging works and when it can be used to improve the user experience. It exposes tagging's superficial simplicity to reveal interesting issues related to usability, information architecture, online community and collective intelligence.

The Yahoo! User Interface (YUI) Library is a set of utilities and controls, written in JavaScript, for building richly interactive web applications using techniques such as DOM scripting, DHTML, and AJAX. The YUI Library also includes several core CSS resources. All components in the YUI Library have been released as open source under a BSD license and are free for all uses. This book covers all released components whether utility, control, core file, or CSS tool. Methods of the YAHOO Global Object are used and discussed throughout the book. The basics of each control will be presented, along with a detailed example showing its use to create complex, fully featured, cross-browser, Web 2.0 user interfaces. Besides giving you a deep understand of the YUI library, this book will expand your knowledge of object-oriented JavaScript programming, as well as strengthen your understanding of the DOM and CSS. You will learn to create a number of powerful JavaScript controls that can be used straight away in your own applications.
