«You Can Hear Me Now: How Microloans and Cell Phones are Connecting the World's Poor to the Global Economy»Nicholas P. Sullivan | Jossey-Bass | ISBN 0787986097 | 2007-02-02 | 272 pages| PDF | 1.8 Mb
Bangladeshi villagers sharing cell phones helped build what is now a thriving company with more than $200 million in annual profits. But what is the lesson for the rest of the world? This is a question author Nicholas P. Sullivan addresses in his tale of a new kind of entrepreneur, Iqbal Quadir, the visionary and catalyst behind the creation of GrameenPhone in Bangladesh.
GrameenPhonea partnership between Norway's Telenor and Grameen Bank, co-winner of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prizedefines a new approach to building business opportunities in the developing world. You Can Hear Me Now offers a compelling account of what Sullivan calls the "external combustion engine"a combination of forces that is sparking economic growth and lifting people out of poverty in countries long dominated by aid-dependent governments. The "engine" comprises three forces: information technology, imported by native entrepreneurs trained in the West, backed by foreign investors.
Review:Wonderful example of thinking outside our cultural constraints...
To the typical American (and other developed nation citizens), the cell phone has become part of the normal fabric of life. Communication with anyone at any time from anywhere is just expected. But in countries like Bangladesh, only a very small number of people have access to any type of telephone communication. The book You Can Hear Me Now: How Microloans and Cell Phones are Connecting the World's Poor to the Global Economy by Nicholas P. Sullivan does an excellent job of showing how something as simple as the cell phone can break the cycle of poverty and aid for millions of people.
Contents:Part 1 - The GrameenPhone Story: Connectivity Is Productivity; Dish-Wallahs of Delhi (and Other Early Models); Cell Phone as Cow - A New Paradigm in Search of Investors; On The Money Trail in Scandinavia; Building a Company; Building a Network
Part 2 - Transformation Through Technology: Wildfile at the Bottom of the Pyramid; Cell Phone as Wallet; Wealth Creation and Rural Income Opportunities; Beyond Phones - In Search of a New "Cow"; Eyeing the Dhaka Stock Exchange
Epilogue; Notes; Resources; Index
The book is split into two parts. The first part covers the story of GrameenPhone's launch in Bangladesh, and the second part is more of a look at the forces behind using technology at the "bottom of the pyramid" (the vast number of people who globally live at poverty level) to connect them to the world's trade economy. Iqbal Quadir was a Bangladeshi who studied and worked in the US and was doing quite well. But he was also concerned about the massive levels of poverty in his home country. Once day he was standing on the street and had an epiphany about communication equaling productivity. His people worked hard, but they had no way to reliably communicate with others except by face to face meetings. All that wasted time meant there was untapped potential just waiting to be utilized. He started talking with Muhammad Yunus, founder of Grameen Bank (originator of microloan programs) to see how communication technology could be rolled out to the entire country, making a phone available to anyone near a village. Without government aids and grants, Quadir put together a consortium of foreign investors and Grameen Bank to build GrameenPhone, a life-altering company. Using a fiber-optic line already laid next to the country's rail line, they were able to place cell towers in areas to cover all the rural areas of Bangladesh. Then using microloans from Grameen Bank, "phone ladies" could buy a cell phone for the village, offer the phone service, and sell the time in small increments. The cell phone gave a business to the village, in addition to creating subsidiary jobs and opportunities with the communication that was enabled by having phone service throughout the country. It's this use of technology that's advocated in the second part of the book as an example of how business opportunities can remove the grip of poverty from nations and lead to living wages instead of handouts.
You Can Hear Me Now is an inspirational book with plenty of lessons for those who are willing to look outside the normal constraints of what we consider business opportunities.

«The Urban Astronomer's Guide: A Walking Tour of the Cosmos for City Sky Watchers
(Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series)»Rod Mollise | Springer | ISBN 1846282160 | 1 edition (May 24, 2006) | 257 pages| PDF | 11 Mb
Most amateur astronomers yearn to observe more frequently. Many of them, however, live in urban and highly developed suburban areas that are heavily light polluted. Due to this light pollution, they are under the impression that deep sky objectsnebulae, galaxies, star clustersare either invisible or not worth viewing from home. This book describes the many objects that can be seen in a bright urban sky, and shows the city or suburban astronomer how to observe object after object, season after season.
This book covers the "why," "how," and "what" of astronomy under light-polluted skies. The prospective city-based observer is told why to observe from home (there are hundreds of spectacular objects to be seen from the average urban site), how to observe the city sky (telescopes, accessories, and moderns techniques), and what to observe. About 50% of the book is devoted to describing "tours" of the sky, with physical and observational descriptions, at-the-eyepiece drawings, and photographs.
Review:Great Book for City Dwelling Amatuer Astronomers!
Living in the South Florida Peninsula, you get used to light pollution. In 2005, I purchased my first "real" telescope and soon learned how badly light polluted South Florida really is. Although a trip to a dark sky site is only 60 miles away, I live in the suburbs outside of Miami and wanted to take advantage of my decent sized back yard. My sky's limiting magnitude is around 4, the sky towards the north is a grayish white haze where only Polaris is visible and the big dipper if high enough in the sky. The rest of the sky is a little better but after 2 years of limited success in searching for DSOs, I decided to look for help.
The Urban Astronomer's Guide may be the help I require. The book is well written and easy to follow. This book was written where beginners as well as intermediate amateur astronomers would find it interesting.
Part I of the book entitled: Telescopes and Techniques covers everything from the why one would want to observe from the city to the writers experience with types of telescopes and needed techniques to beat the light pollution blues. Mr. Mollise explains the advantages in large and short focal length telescopes and which objects benefit from either type. The author discusses in great detail the differences between the different types of Light-Pollution Reduction Filters, eyepieces, finders, computer software, print atlases, etc.
The book discuses techniques which experienced amateurs may be familiar with but beginners and intermediates may have heard have but not understand completely. Things like the use of averted vision, "jiggling" the telescope to tease out details in faint objects. Dark Adaptation is discussed and it's importance, all invaluable lessons that every amateur astronomer should learn.
Part II of the book entitled: A Walking Tour of the Cosmos is what makes this book a keeper. This section of the book goes over examples of objects that are perfect for city observation. The four chapters as you might imagine are broken up by season, Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. Each season gives 4 lists of objects that the Author feels are viewable for the given season and time. An example of such a tour is Spring's Tour 1. Objects included in this tour are M94, M51, M106, M63, M81, M82, M101, M97, M3 and the Double Star Cor Caroli.
Each object is discussed in detail with the author's notes from his personal journal. Mr. Mollise discusses the use of filters that can enhance a particular object, magnification that should be used to view certain objects, and what you should expect to see at the eyepiece. The author also includes his personal illustrations of objects he's included in his journals, which gives you a good idea of what you should be able to see in the eyepiece. The illustrations are very good and to me are much more useful than the Hubble type images commonly seen in astronomy books.
The only thing I found a little odd about this book would be the inclusion of such difficult to see objects as M1 and M51. The author even writes: "Sadly, I have to admit that in the city it (M51) is something of a dud." He also writes: "you have to be satisfied just to say you've seen it (M1)." These are just two of several objects the author himself confesses are extremely challenging, if not impossible to view from a light-polluted location. Why not focus on objects that are less challenging? Maybe have one object at the end of each tour that might be a challenge.
This is not to say the book does not reward the reader with some surprisingly easy to see objects. I was recently treated to a "hidden treasure" in the open cluster M46. As it turns out there is a small planetary nebulae (NGC2438) within this semi-impressive cluster that makes M46 a showpiece object in my opinion. If not for this book, I may not have spent much more than 10 minutes viewing M46. I now find myself going back to it time after time just as I do with M42 and M45.
Overall the book is a good read. This book in written for beginner's with some experience and can be useful to intermediate amateurs who might not be getting the most from their telescopes due to light pollution issues within the Urban setting. Part II in particular I've found invaluable and it will definitely keep me coming back for more.

Open Innovation: The New Imperative for Creating and Profiting from Technology by Henry William Chesbrough (Author)Publisher: Harvard Business School Press (March 1, 2003) | ISBN-10: 1578518377 | PDF | 1 Mb | 272 pages
The great corporate research departments at companies like Bell Labs, IBM and Xerox were once the motor of American industry. But that may be changing, according to this probing academic study of corporate technological innovation. Chesbrough, an assistant professor at the Harvard Business School, argues that the old "closed innovation" model-vertically integrated research-and-development departments that develop technology in-house for the sole use of their corporate parent-is becoming obsolete in an age of mobile scientific workers, ubiquitous high-tech startups and a growing extra-corporate research establishment at university labs. Modern technology powerhouses like Cisco and Microsoft do little of their own basic research, he reports; instead they have dropped the "do-it-all-yourself" approach and pioneered a new model of "open innovation," in which companies import ideas from without and let their own innovations enter the wider marketplace. Drawing on case studies of companies like Lucent and Intel, Chesbrough suggests that companies make themselves more permeable to the flow of knowledge through such strategies as hiring professors and grad students as summer consultants, sponsoring university research, investing in and partnering with high-tech startups and venture capitalists, and disseminating their own innovations through spin-off companies or even by publishing it in the public domain. Chesbrough's sophisticated but highly readable discussion of these complex issues will give managers much food for thought.

Game Theory and International Environmental Cooperation by Michael Finus (Author)Publisher: Edward Elgar Publishing (March 2001) | ISBN-10: 1840644087 | PDF | 1,4 Mb | 416 pages
Since there is no supranational institution which can enforce international environmental agreements (IEAs), international cooperation proves difficult in practice. Global emissions exhibit negative externalities in countries other than that of their origin and hence there is a high interdependence between countries, and strategic considerations play an important role. Game theory analyzes the interaction between agents and formulates hypotheses about their behavior and the final outcomes in games. Hence, international environmental problems are particularly suited for analysis by this method.
The author investigates various strategies to provide countries with an incentive to accede, agree and comply to an international environmental agreement (IEA). He shows that by integrating real world restrictions into a model, game theory is a powerful tool for explaining the divergence between 'first-best' policy recommendations and 'second-best' designs of actual IEAs. For instance he explains why (inefficient) uniform emission reduction quotas have played such a prominent role in past IEAs despite economists' recommendations for the use of (efficient) market-based instruments, as for example emission targets and permits. Moreover, it is stated, that a single, global IEA on climate is not necessarily the best strategy and small coalitions may enjoy a higher stability and may achieve more. This book will be of great interest to scholars, researchers and lecturers in the fields of international environmental economics, game theory and international relations.

Double Password v1.21 | 1.39 MBStrong passwords should have a significant length and cannot contain normal words. Only random digits and letters of different case. Such passwords are extremely hard to remember and it takes time to enter. But, even strong passwords have their weaknesses. When you type a password, it can be intercepted by a spy program that logs all your keystrokes. Others can see what you type (even if the password field on the screen is masked, the password can be read by buttons you hit on your keyboard.)
Until now, the only solution was to buy a secure token. A secure token is a hardware key that is used instead of or in addition to your normal password authentication. There are two main problems with the hardware solution, though. First, it is expensive. And second, you can use them only with software that has built-in support for this method of authentication.
But, from now on, you can turn any USB flash drive into a secure token! No need to purchase an additional expensive device. All you need is about 2 megabytes of free space on your flash drive or other USB gadget, such as an MP3 player, PDA or even a USB-pluggable mobile handset.

Salfeld Child Control 2007 ver.9.457.0.0 | 4,48 MBComputers are the place for children. This is the place where they can sharpen their agility as well as their abilities. They can learn and make new friends. What’s more, the Internet provides information for homework assignments. So far, so good. But they also need to be protected from the computerfor one thing, so that they don’t lose their sense of time and forget to go out and play with their friends once in a while, and for another, because of the dangers lurking on the Web. That’s why responsible parents everywhere install Child Control on every computer that their children use.
Give children an “allowance of time
Child Control 2007 keeps track of the time your kids spend in front of the computer. Once their time is up, the computer automatically shuts down and won’t start up againsomething any kid can understand. Our experience has shown that Child Control 2007’s verdict is accepted without argumentsthere is no debate and no discussion. Another way of looking at it: “Child Control gives your kids back time that they are then free to spend in other ways.
Safety on the Internet
It isn’t always easy to watch your young ones’ every move on the computerand it’s even harder to follow what they’re doing on the Internet. Child Control 2007 can also help you here, by automatically shutting the door on their Internet connection once their allotted time is used up. Parents can easily regulate how many hours a day each child can spend on the Internet, and even specify the precise hours of the day when the gate to the worldwide online community will be available.
The Dark Side of the Internet
Sure, you can find any number of sites that are useful for learning, reference, and games. Then there are the other ones that are clearly inappropriate for children and teens. Some parents also worry about their children ending up on one of these sites by accident, or as the result of a dare. These fears can be quickly put to rest by Child Control 2007, which has already made a name for itself in Internet monitoring.
Control Internet access using filters
Child Control lets you activate filters to block all websites oriented toward violence or sex. You can also filter out specific words that may appear on various websites. Alternatively, you can limit access to only the websites that you specify. In that case, your kids will only be able to access these sites, and all others will be off-limits. In the 2007 version, parents can also limit their kids’ stay on certain sites to a specified time, so that eventually they will have to put their online games away and get back to their homework.

DataRescue PhotoRescue Advanced v2.1.690 RETAIL | 1.0 MBDataRescue PhotoRescue Advanced is the ultimate data-recovery solution for digital media. This incredible power tool allows an advanced user to virtually rebuild fragmented pictures & photos from their fragments.
Photorescue has established itself as the best performing digital picture recovery solution: its automated defragmentation algorithms allow it to consistently score better than its competition in independent tests. However, automated file defragmentation has its limits.
That is why Photorescue Advanced allows you to manipulate the clusters pictures are made of and adds interactivity and visual feedback to the data recovery process.
PhotoRescue Advanced will first perform a normal data recovery scan. That first phase will usually recover a large number of full pictures and a few fragmented ones. Some files may actually contain too much data and need to be truncated to put the extra allocation units back into the useable cluster pool. In the second recovery phase, the user will manipulate those allocation units and will grow potential valid pictures out of the free cluster pool.

Enterprise Collaboration: On-Demand Information Exchange for Extended Enterprises (Integrated Series in Information Systems) by David M. Levermore (Author), Cheng Hsu (Author)Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (August 9, 2006) | ISBN-10: 0387345663 | PDF | 8 Mb | 176 pages
Collaboration is a "watch word" and a recognized outcome of the increasing integration in business and industry. The Industrial Revolution brought us "standardization" and as it continues to evolve, "standardization" has widened into the concept of "rationalization." In recent times, "flexibility" has been added to the evolving nature of industry, which includes such developments as flexible manufacturing, CIM, concurrent engineering, supply chain management, etc. But the next step in this evolutionary process is developing out of the newly IT-enabled practices such of E-business, E-engineering, and on-demand business and it is these IT-enabled practices that brings the concept of "collaboration" to the next level of industrial evolution. "Collaboration" here means cooperation among independent enterprises towards some common tasks and even cooperation among distributed systems and processes within the same enterprises. There are some complex organizational and technical forces behind the emerging momentum of Enterprise Collaboration: (1) From the organizational perspective, no single authority can command and control all the participants as the scope of integration grows exponentially across the world economy. (2) From the technical perspective, the scale and complexity of tasks are exceeding the limits of the traditional command-and-control approaches to integration. These are the factors leading to the emergence of a model of collaboration to achieve the goals of integration for enterprises and extended enterprises. The book will go beyond the discussion of global databases and present a general Enterprise Resources Market model to facilitate the management and integration of enterprise information resources in a cooperating mode. The bulk of the book will discuss this particular concept in depth and implement a general model to focus on a new publish-and-subscribe model for information resource owners to cooperate at a scale much larger than the traditional global query.

Viktor Schauberger - How I Discovered New Principles in the Working of Nature192 pages | Publisher: Gateway (November 1998) | Language: English | ISBN-10: 1858600561 | PDF | 1.4 Mb
British architect Callum Coats edited and translated this book from Viktor Schauberger's works with the full title Nature as teacher - New principles in the working of nature (1998). Schauberger, a famous austrian natural philosopher, predicted the ecological catastrophes which are occuring all around us and proposed the solution - return to the principles of mother nature. 185 pages, some
pictures. From the backcover: Today we are standing helpless and perplexed. Wih no glimmer of improvement anywhere in sight, we feel hopelessly propelled towards a folrorn future. It is understandable therefore than an increasing number of people, sick and tired of this insane activity, are now seeking ways to return to mother nature. Viktor Schauberger (1885-1958) Viktor Schauberger was one of the first geniune environmentalists. In the 1930s he was predicting ecological catastrophe when noone else could see it coming. Schauberger is now being proved right. He foresaw: -Global warming and its devastating consequences -Increasing violence and lawlessness as the direct result of destructive methods which block nature's energies and balance -The destruction of the world's forests and ecosystems This, and the fact that he developed free energy machines through harnessing the magical processes of nature, has made Viktor Schauberger truly a man of our times. This volume gives tremendous insight into what is happening on the Earth today and presents practical solutions on how we may yet save our precious world. Most telling is Schauberger's elucidation of the vital natural cycles that modern unthinking technologies have interrupted and harmed, sometimes irreparably.

Hidden Nature: The Startling Insights of Viktor Schauberger288 pages | Publisher: Adventures Unlimited Press (November 25, 2005) | English | ISBN: 1931882487 | PDF | 10.3 Mb
This is Alick Bartholomew's amazing book Hidden Nature - The Startling Insights of Viktor Schauberger (2003) which puts out Schauberger's ideas in a simple, easy to read and understandable way. Schauberger, a famous austrian natural philosopher, predicted the ecological catastrophes which are occuring all around us and proposed the solution - return to the principles of mother nature. The author explains these, offering a vital key to understanding where our culture has gone wrong, and how we could put things right again. In Hidden Nature he uncovers Schauberger's vision of transforming our machinery to work in a vortex-like fashion like it happens in nature. This fascinating book is a comprehensive breakdown of Viktor Schauberger's stunning ideas and observations. 260 pages, many pictures. A must read for everyone. From the backcover: Viktor Schauberger was a pioneer of the study of the subtle energies in nature and the importance of living water in all natural processes. This book describes and explains his insights in contemporary, accessible language. His amazing discoveries ? which address issues such as sick water, ailing forests, climate change and, above all, renewable energy ? have dramatic implications for how we should work with nature and its resources. Protesting against the harmful effects of modern technology, Schauberger demonstrated radically new methods of working in harmony with nature's own energies. He applied his theories to many revolutionary designs, culminating in prototypes for pollution-free energy machines. Schauberger (1885-1958) was far ahead of his time. From his unusually detailed observations of the natural world, he pioneered a ompletely new understanding of how nature works. He foresaw, and tried to warn against, the global waste and costly ecological destruction of our age. About the author: Alick Bartholomew read Geology and Geography at the University of Cambridge, followed by graduate studies at the University of Chicago. He has commissioned and published many books on Viktor Schauberger and has been working with Schauberger material for over twenty years.

Research Techniques in Animal Ecology - Luigi BotaniLuigi Botani | Editorial Columbia University Press | ISBN:[/b] 0-231-11340-4 | 2da. Edición: 2000 | pdf | 476 pages | language: english | 5,02 MB
"Very useful for researchers and... essential reading for graduate students studying space and habitat use or population dynamics." --
Ecoscience The present biodiversity crisis is rife with opportunities to make important conservation decisions; however, the misuse or misapplication of the methods and techniques of animal ecology can have serious consequences for
the survival of species. Still, there have been relatively few critical reviews of methodology in the field. This book provides an analysis of some of the most frequently used research techniques in animal ecology, identifying their limitations and misuses, as well as possible solutions to avoid such pitfalls. In the process, contributors to this volume present new perspectives on the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data.
Research Techniques in Animal Ecology is an overarching account of central theoretical and methodological controversies in the field, rather than a handbook on the minutiae of techniques. The editors have forged comprehensive presentations of key topics in animal ecology, such as territory and home range estimates, habitation evaluation, population viability analysis, GIS mapping, and measuring the dynamics of societies. Striking a careful balance, each chapter begins by assessing the shortcomings and misapplications of the techniques in question, followed by a thorough review of the current literature, and concluding with possible solutions and suggested guidelines for more robust investigations.

This book explains the different types of mobile telephone technologies and systems from 1st generation analog to 3rd generation digital broadband. It describes the basics of how they operate, the different types of wireless voice, data and information services, key commercial systems, and typical revenues/costs of these services.
Mobile telephone technologies, systems, and services have dramatically changed over the past 2 years. New technology capabilities and limited restrictions (deregulation) are allowing existing systems to offer new services. Many of these new services compete with other types of wireless systems that have not experienced significant competition.
While new competition has provided lower cost services for consumers, it means a rapidly changing marketplace for the wireless industry. Some of these changes include the increase in mobile telephone customers from 300 million to 1.3 billion customers within 5 years and the shift of focus from adding new voice customers to providing advanced services such as data transfer, web browsing, and software downloads.
The types of services that mobile telephone systems can offer vary depending on the technologies, devices, and the services selected by customers. This book discusses the different types of systems including 1st, 2nd, 2.5, and third generation wireless (3G). Some of the most important topics featured are:
• Simple descriptions and diagrams of analog and digital mobile telephone systems
• The key types of wireless services and which types of mobile telephone systems can offer them
• The approximate usage fees for mobile telephone services
• The market numbers and trends for mobile subscribers
• How each mobile telephone system continues to change to offer new services and better compete against other mobile telephone technologies.
• What are the key applications driving the mobile telephone market growth.
• What are the next steps in mobile telephone systems such as 4G

A practical guide to building fully operational financial cash flow models for structured finance transactions
Structured finance and securitization deals are becoming more commonplace on Wall Street. Up until now, however, market participants have had to create their own models to analyze these deals, and new entrants have had to learn as they go. Modeling Structured Finance Cash Flows with Microsoft Excel provides readers with the information they need to build a cash flow model for structured finance and securitization deals. Financial professional Keith Allman explains individual functions and formulas, while also explaining the theory behind the spreadsheets. Each chapter begins with a discussion of theory, followed by a section called "Model Builder," in which Allman translates the theory into functions and formulas. In addition, the companion CD-ROM features all of the modeling exercises, as well as a final version of the model that is created in the text.

Comprehensive thinking for hard-skill management
Manufacturing is a combination of soft and hard skill. The soft-skill is about people and how to manage them. This skill is obvious in several text and business management book. The hard-skill, however, is quite rare. Fortunately, Wright combines it in nice -easy to read format.
The strong point of this book is "comprehensive". Wright composes his thought of manufacturing system today and projected to the future. All manufacturing processes are seamlessly combined from one chapter to another. The integration of CAD/CAM is also mentioned. In addition, his viewpoint of manufacturing system for biotechnology, nanotechnology and information technology are quite interesting -and practical.
If I have to use one book for manufacturing class, I would use this book for teaching. For anyone new to manufacturing process, this book is a must for your jorney to the manufacturing world.

Intersubjective Temporality: It's About TimeSpringer | ISBN 1402042132 | 2006-03-14 | 205 pages | PDF | 4.3 MB
This book contains phenomenological analyses of each dimension of temporalizing consciousness, turning primarily to Husserl's later manuscripts on time. From these manuscripts, the author takes up certain important notions heretofore generally neglected by the secondary literature in Husserl scholarship, such as "near" and "far" retention, and "world-time". Integrating a consideration of intersubjective existence, the author suggests that the notion of "intersubjective temporality" might be a more appropriate way to understand the foundation of the subject understood phenomenologically.

Scientific Computing with MATLAB and Octave (Texts in Computational Science and Engineering)Springer | ISBN 354032612X | 2006-08-22 | 322 pages | PDF | 5.3 MB
This textbook is an introduction to Scientific Computing, in which several numerical methods for the computer solution of certain classes of mathematical problems are illustrated. The authors show how to compute the zeros or the integrals of continuous functions, solve linear systems, approximate functions by polynomials and construct accurate approximations for the solution of ordinary and partial differential equations. To make the presentation concrete and appealing, the programming environments Matlab and Octave, which is freely distributed, are adopted as faithful companions. The book contains the solutions to several problems posed in exercises and examples, often originating from specific applications. A specific section is devoted to subjects which were not addressed in the book and contains the bibliographical references for a more comprehensive treatment of the material. The second edition features many new problems and examples, as well as more numerical methods for linear and nonlinear systems and ordinary and partial differential equations.

Research Methodologies in Supply Chain ManagementPublisher: Physica-Verlag Heidelberg (1999-12-31) | ISBN-10: 3790815837 | PDF | 5.3 Mb | 619 pages
While supply chain management has risen to great prominence in recent year, there are hardly related developments in research methodologies. Yet, as supply chains cover more than one company, one central issue is how to collect and analyse data along the whole or relevant part of the supply chain. Within the 36 chapters 70 authors bring together a rich selection of theoretical and practical examples of how research methodologies are applied in supply chain management. The book contains papers on theoretical implications as well as papers on a range of key methods, such as modelling, surveys, case studies or action research. It will be of great interest to researchers in the area of supply chain management and logistics, but also to neighbouring fields, such as network management or global operations.

Against the Grain: How to Succeed in Business by Peddling HeresyPublisher:Wiley (2003-02-14) | ISBN-10: 0471216003| PDF | 8.3 Mb | 256 pages
The unique story of a business heretic and his concept of Economic Value Added (EVA)
In Against the Grain, Joel Stern shares for the first time, not only the story of how EVA swept the corporate world, but the story behind the story-the intellectual underpinnings of EVA, how he and his colleagues at Stern Stewart & Co. promoted the concept, won its initial acceptance by major corporations, and later turned the concept into a revolution. He has for good reason been called a one-man catalyst for change. In an engaging memoir, he has given us not only an account of his business strategy, but also provided fascinating anecdotes and vignettes of encounters with leading businessmen on four continents.
Joel M. Stern (New York, NY) has been the Managing Partner of Stern Stewart & Co. since its founding in 1982 and was coauthor of The EVA Challenge (Wiley: 0-471-40555-8). A recognized authority on financial economics, corporate performance measurement, corporate valuation, and incentive compensation, he is a leading advocate of the concept of shareholder value.
Irwin Ross (New York, NY) was retained to write The EVA Challenge with Joel Stern and John Shiely. He is a former roving editor of Reader's Digest and over the years has written for Fortune and a variety of other magazines.

During the past, there have been many changes in food availability, production and selection around the world. These changes, such as genetically modified foods, raise questions about their long-range implications. How will they affect the worldwide economics and management of agriculture? food legislation? the environment? the determination of food safety and quality? nutrition and health? Food, Consumers, and the Food Industry: Catastrophe or Opportunity? describes the major changes and answers the questions concerning them. It presents information that decision-makers in the field can utilize on such topics as:
* Consumers and consumerism
* Marketing and the marketplace
* Retailing
* Nutrition and health
* Impact of new technologies
Food, Consumers, and the Food Industry encourages you to set aside the "truth" of science to consider how political, economic, social, and cultural institutions can work to avoid a possible crisis.

George Ball, «Vitamins: Their Role in the Human Body»Blackwell Publishing | ISBN: 0632064781 | 2004-11-01 | 448 pages | PDF | 5 Mb
This single-source reference draws together the current knowledge of the vitamins' biological properties in the context of human nutrition. Vitamins are co-enzymes, antioxidants or precursors of hormones and are therefore involved in a great many biochemical and physiological processes. They play a vital role in the maintenance of health, and there is evidence that dietary sources of vitamins have beneficial effects in the prevention of heart-related diseases, bone diseases and possibly cancer.
Following introductory chapters on historical and nutritional aspects of vitamins, the next four chapters cover relevant and detailed aspects of physiology and functional anatomy, biochemistry, immunology and the regulation of protein synthesis by nuclear hormone receptors. These background chapters, supported by a glossary of terms, provide the scientific principles upon which vitamin functions are based. The following thirteen chapters deal with each vitamin in turn. Subject areas include chemical structure, intestinal absorption, transport, metabolism, biochemical and physiological actions, immunoregulatory properties, deficiency-related diseases and potential toxicity. An extensive bibliography refers the reader to the original research literature.
Vitamins is aimed at nutritionists, biochemists, physiologists and physicians whether they be researchers, teachers or students. Food scientists, food technologists and many others working in the health professions will also find much of use and interest in the book. The inclusion of the theoretical principles in the background chapters makes the book an ideal starting point for those working outside the area who need a solid overview of the subject.

Patricia Bragg / Paul Bragg, «Build Powerful Nerve Force: It controls Your Life --Keep it Healthy»Bragg Health Sciences | ISBN: 0877900949 | Revised edition (May 25, 2002) | 208 pages | PDF | 3.5 Mb
If you are suffering from stress overload, chronic fatigue, insomnia, depression or other related illnesses you really should read this book.
Nerve Force is the source of all life! Life itself flows through your nerves – never forget that! When fully supplied with Nerve Force, we are enthusiastic, happy, fit and ambitious. We overcome difficulties and are ready to accept the challenges that life offers. Problems of all kinds become manageable when we are confident that we have the Nerve Force to cope with them.
People with powerful Nerve Force cannot be beaten. They rise up again for a new start, no matter how often they might fail. In the end, they win! Thus, 95% of humanity is dominated by the other 5%. It’s Nerve Force that does the leading and makes the difference!
Nerve Force Is the Key to Vital Living
Your health, strength, vitality and endurance are directly measured by the degree of your Nerve Force. It gives you the reserve power that makes life successful and fascinating. The world is full of people with the brains and ability to rise to the top, but who lack the necessary Nerve Force to push them forward. A person’s beauty, charm and vivacity are directly related to the Nerve Force that makes them sparkle with radiant health.
Your body is a complicated machine; Nerve Force and physical health are interdependent. Nerve Force is the driving power – but its generation, in turn, depends upon the harmonious activities of the vital organs. Your body is nourished throughout its every part by a vast circulatory system that carries oxygenated blood from your heart and lungs. If an organ is not functioning properly, your blood will not contain the elements necessary to create the right sort of Nerve Force. Your stomach must digest efficiently. The digestion assimilating process must be dependable. The eliminating organs – the bowels, lungs, kidneys and skin – must have tremendous Nerve Force to work efficiently. The spleen, liver and all the vital organs of the complex blood-making laboratory must all work harmoniously.
If you arise every morning feeling dull and fatigued, if you are without ambition or goals, if you feel old, worn and dragged-out, or if the future looks hopeless and you feel defeated and helpless, then there’s something wrong with your nervous system! Your Nerve Force is depleted and must be renewed! Good news: You don’t have to feel this way! Read on and learn how.
There is one thing you can do – start rebuilding your vital Nerve Force today! The body is a miraculous self-cleansing and self-healing organism when you give it and Mother Nature a chance. Unfortunately, most people, especially Americans today, are depleting their Nerve Force and are whipping their nerves in a desperate effort to compensate. This only makes everything worse.

Knut J. Heller, «Genetically Engineered Food: Methods and Detection, 2nd Edition»Wiley-VCH | ISBN: 3527313931 | 2nd edition (January 2, 2007) | 322 pages | PDF | 1.7 Mb
Continuing the very successful first edition, this book reviews the most recent changes to the legal situation in Europe concerning genetically engineered food and labeling. Due to the extremely rapid developments in green biotechnology, all the chapters have been substantially revised and updated.
Divided into three distinct parts, the text begins by covering applications and perspectives, including transgenic modification of production traits in farm animals, fermented food production and the production of food additives using filamentous fungi. The second section is devoted to legislation, while the final part examines methods of detection, such as DNA-based methods, and methods for detecting genetic engineering in composed and processed foods.
From the reviews of the first edition:
"This work promises to be a standard reference in the detection of genetically engineered food. I believe this work will find a valued place for any scientist, regulator or technical library that deals with biotechnology or detection of genetically engineered food organisms."
