Book Description:Few topics in international economics are as controversial as the choice of an exchange rate regime. Since the breakdown of the Bretton Woods system in the early 1970s, countries have adopted a wide variety of regimes, ranging from pure floats at one extreme to currency boards and dollarization at the other. While a vast theoretical literature explores the choice and consequences of exchange rate regimes, the abundance of possible effects makes it difficult to establish clear relationships between regimes and common macroeconomic policy targets such as inflation and growth.
This book takes a systematic look at the evidence on macroeconomic performance under alternative exchange rate regimes, drawing on the experience of some 150 member countries of the International Monetary Fund over the past thirty years. Among other questions, it asks whether pegging the exchange rate leads to lower inflation, whether floating exchange rates are associated with faster output growth, and whether pegged regimes are particularly prone to currency and other crises. I wish it were much more simply interfaced.
I know very well through the ordinary version (=paper) that this is a marvelous dictionary. But dictonaries are just tools. so I would like to say for this digital version :" the simpler, the better."
The window of the dictionary seems to show a little too much information for me, non native of English or French.

I can provide only a brief review as my time is limited. In a nutshell this is a book that any Luthier would benefit from. It is obvious that Mr. Teeter is a very precise craftsman whom does not take shortcuts. The information presented is the correct way to do whatever needs to be done. Helpful for Quick Reference and for Students
While not comprehensive, this book is a concise "...introduction to the basic terms found in the major schools of Indian Philsosophy." (From the Preface) I find this statement to be true. As a quick reference this book is very helpful. It contains most of the terms of Indian Philosophy one would need to know, and in many cases it provides a multiple definitions. Sure, some definitions seem simplified, but that is due to their nature, the limitations of the English Language and our own Philosophical Concepts, and to the scope of the book. Dr. Grimes clearly states the aim of the book in the Preface. It is to define "...most terms", and to do this in a 440 page paperback one needs to be brief. Presumably Scholars of Sanskrit and Indian Philosophy should have other References to consult, but I think it still is helpful also to them, because it is easy and quick to use. Sanskrit Students will also benefit because all terms are given in the Devanagari Script and in Romanized Transliteration. I use this book and recommend it.

Like much of Asimov's work, this is based around a mystery format (the murder of a 'Spacer' or space colonist in a camp outside the future steel city of New York). It's a set up that Asimov uses to discuss the possible problems that humans will face in the future and as a result the solving of the murder takes something of a back seat and is solved in a perfunctory way. It's very much a product of its time - but whereas I'd always associated Asimov with those early science-fiction writers who had a rosy view of the future, I was surprised to see that his Earth of the future in a planet on the cusp of crisis.
People are assigned specific rankings within the society, with each rank providing its own privileges. As a C-5 rated officer, Lije Baley is entitled to his own apartment, with a sink basin (so he and his family don't have to use the communal facilties within their apartment block if they don't wish to) and special food rations (much is made of the fact that he can eat proper chicken from time to time, rather than the yeast food products that are the norm) and he can use special moving pathways and have a seat on certain transporters. His greatest fear though is of being 'declassified', a fate that happened to his father - whereby whole families are thrown to the fringes of the city, deprived of its benefits, prohibited from getting a job and forced to scrape a living from the inadequate soil. It's this fear that provides one of his main motivations throughout the book - if he solves the mystery then he will get a promotion to C-6, which will see his family given greater benefits. If he fails - specifically, if he annoys the Spacer colony in doing so - then he will be declassified and his family will suffer his fate.

This volume consists of an introduction and two groups of essays by Paul M. Postal, each with a connecting theme. The first, positive group of papers, contains five previously unpublished studies of English syntax. Each investigation of specific English details is argued to have significant theoretical consequences. The second, negative group of papers, contains seven essays each of which seeks to show that aspects of contemporary linguistic activity are in part contaminated by elements of what is called "junk linguistics." Postal uses the term to denote work which advances proposals, puts forward claims and asserts deep results which, he argues, can only be accepted by ignoring serious standards of inquiry and scholarship. Postal claims that much of this work is nonetheless currently considered not only serious but prestigious reveals the problem to exist at the core of the field, not its periphery. These chapters include documentation of "junk linguistic" aspects in National Science Foundation refereeing, work on the foundations of linguistics, and even in widespread terminological usages. The final chapter briefly lists personal suggestions for dealing with this problem.
Paul Postal is a Research Professor of Linguistics at New York University. His specialities are syntactic theory, English syntax, and the foundations of linguistics. He previously taught at MIT and the City University of New York, and is the author of twelve previous books and dozens of articles on linguistics.
