Design for Reliability (Electronics Handbook Series)
CRC | 256 pages | 2001-04-30 | ISBN :084931111X | PDF| 11mb
Edited by dana crowe
Today's marketplace demands product reliability. At the same time, it places ever-increasing demands on products that push the limits of their performance and their functional life, and it does so with the expectation of lower per-unit product costs. To meet these demands, product design now requires a focused, streamlined, concurrent engineering process that will produce a product at the lowest possible cost in the least amount of time. Design for Reliability provides a systematic approach to the design process that is sharply focused on reliability and firmly based on the physics of failure. It imparts an understanding of how, why, and when to use the wide variety of reliability engineering tools available and offers fundamental insight into the total design cycle. Applicable from the idea phase of the product development cycle through product obsolescence, Design for Reliability (DfR) concepts integrated with reliability verification and analytical physics form a coherent stage gate/phase design process that helps ensure that a product will meet customers' reliability objectives. Whether you are a high-volume manufacturer of consumer items or a low volume producer of military commodities, your goal is the same: to bring a product to market using a process focused on designing out or mitigating potential failure modes prior to production release. Readers of Design for Reliability will learn to meet that goal and move beyond solidifying a basic offering to the marketplace to creating a true competitive advantage.

Man settled along the banks of the Nile River as long ago as 7000 BC; four millennia later, in this very region, he had learned to read, write, and develop and expand as a community. Over the next 3000 years, Egypt prospered despite hardships, internal conflicts and foreign invasion. Herodotus, the Greek historian who traveled to Egypt in the 5th century BC, called it “the gift of the Nile.

Hesiod's Cosmos
Cambridge University Press | ISBN 0521823927 | 2003 edition | PDF | 209 Pages | 870 KB
This study reveals the unity of Hesiod's vision of the Cosmos by reading both his poems as two complementary halves of a whole embracing the human and divine cosmos. In the Theogony and Works and Days, Hesiod, roughly contemporary with Homer, does not describe the deeds of the heroes. He provides instead the earliest comprehensive account of the genesis of the Greek gods and the nature of human life that became the foundation for later Greek literature and philosophy.

The Church in Ancient Society: From Galilee to Gregory the Great
Oxford University Press, USA | ISBN 0199246955 | 2002 edition | PDF | 737 pages | 3 MB
The Church in Ancient Society provides a full and enjoyable narrative history of the first six centuries of the Christian Church. Ancient Greek and Roman society had many gods and an addiction to astrology and divination. This introduction to the period traces the process by which Christianity changed this and so provided a foundation for the modern world: the teaching of Jesus created a lasting community, which grew to command the allegiance of the Roman emperor. Christianity is discussed in relation to how it appeared to both Jews and pagans, and how its Christian doctrine and practice were shaped in relation to Graeco-Roman culture and the Jewish matrix. Among the major figures discussed are Tertullian, Clement of Alexandria, Origen, Constantine, Julian the Apostate, Basil, Ambrose, and Augustine. Following a chronological approach, Henry Chadwick's clear exposition of important texts and theological debates in their historical context is unrivalled in detail. In particular, theological and ecclesial texts are examined in relation to the behaviour and beliefs of people who attended churches and synagogues. Christians did not find agreement and unity easy and the author displays a distinctive concern for the factors - theological, personal, and political - which caused division in the church and prevented reconciliation. The emperors, however, began to foster unity for political reasons and to choose monotheism. Finally, the Church captured the society.

The Making of the Slavs: History and Archaeology of the Lower Danube Region, c. 500700
Cambridge University Press | ISBN 0521802024 | 2001 edition | PDF | 483 pages | 7.3 MB
This book offers a new approach to the problem of Slavic ethnicity in southeastern Europe between c. 500 and c. 700. The author shows how Byzantine authors "invented" the Slavs, in order to make sense of political and military developments taking place in the Balkans. Making extensive use of archaeology to show that such developments resulted in the rise of powerful leaders, responsible for creating group identities and mobilizing warriors for successful raids across the frontier. The author rejects the idea of Slavic migration, and shows that "the Slavs" were the product of the frontier.

Cambridge University Press | ISBN 0521452805 | 2002 | PDF | 5 MB | 290 pages
Despite the fact that its capital city and over one third of its territory was within the continent of Europe, the Ottoman Empire has consistently been regarded as a place apart, inextricably divided from the West by differences of culture and religion. A perception of its militarism, its barbarism, its tyranny, the sexual appetites of its rulers and its pervasive exoticism has led historians to measure the Ottoman world against a western standard and find it lacking. In recent decades, a dynamic and convincing scholarship has emerged that seeks to comprehend and, in the process, to de-exoticize this enduring realm.

Chelsea Publishing Company | ISBN: 0828403341 | 1992 | 396 pages | PDF-DJVU | 13 MB / 6.5 MB

From the Preface by J. E. Littlewood: "All [Hardy's] books gave him some degree of pleasure, but this one, his last, was his favourite. When embarking on it he told me that he believed in its value (as well he might), and also that he looked forward to the task with enthusiasm. He had actually given lectures on the subject at intervals ever since his return to Cambridge in 1931, and he had at one time or another lectured on everything in the book except Chapter XIII [The Euler-MacLaurin sum formula] ... [I]n the early years of the century the subject [Divergent Series], while in no way mystical or unrigorous, was regarded as sensational, and about the present title, now colourless, there hung an aroma of paradox and audacity."

Atlas of Staging in Gynecological Cancer | J. Richard Smith, Jeremiah Healy, Giuseppe Del Priore
ISBN-10: 1846284333 | November 12, 2007 | PDF | 30 pages | 32.31 Mb

"Atlas of Staging in Gynecological Cancer" is designed to be used in conjunction with diagnostic procedures between the surgeon and the radiologist. It describes the two common staging regimes used by all units across the world, namely, the FIGO staging system and the TNM system.

The ‘landscape’ format allows each chapter to open on the left hand side and read across the double spread, enabling the reader to see both staging systems at once. Each chapter has a separate section on Epidemiology, Diagnosis, with radiological plates, Management, in tabular form, and Key Points. The book takes the reader through each gynaecologic cancer with a short text accompanying clear radiographic images with legends. Staging is also shown in pictorial form in order to aid clarity.

The book will be of particular interest to the multi-disciplinary team who looks after this group of patients namely, clinical and radiation oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, radiologists and specialist nurses, all with their respective trainees.

Rectal Cancer: New Frontiers in Diagnosis, Treatment and Rehabilitation | Gian Gaetano Delaini
ISBN-10: 8847003423 | April 17, 2006 | PDF | 253 pages | 5.3 Mb

Despite lifestyle improvements, the incidence of rectal cancer is increasing in industrialised countries. Rapid advances in technology, growing knowledge of the biological history of the disease and closer attention to patients' quality of life after surgery have led to a less invasive approach. In the last 15 years, the surgical approach has shifted from extended resection to sphincter-saving procedures, featuring a multidiscipinary approach and a high level of specialisation. The experienced surgeon can plan and choose the "right treatment for the right patient" only with the support of the radiologist, endoscopist and pathologist (preoperative staging), oncologist and radiotherapist (neoadjuvant therapy), and psychologist and stomatherapist (rehabilitation). In addition, the difficult problems of salvage procedure and the reconstruction of anal sphincter after abdominal resection are explored. The aim of this book is to clarify the rapid advances and to offer guidelines for doctors dealing with rectal cancer. Taking into account indications, contraindications, risks, benefits and controversies, the authors offer clear and practice-oriented answers for a wide range of specialists and experts, as well as those new to the field.

In Building Genetic Medicine, Shobita Parthasarathy shows how, even in an era of globalization, national context is playing an important role in the development and use of genetic technologies. Focusing on the development and deployment of genetic testing for breast and ovarian cancer (known as BRCA testing) in the United States and Britain, Parthasarathy develops a comparative analysis framework in order to investigate how national "toolkits" shape both regulations and the architectures of technologies and uses this framework to assess the implications of new genetic technologies.

Ads to Icons introduces new approaches to advertising that go beyond traditional TV/press/billboard communications. It argues that in an age of media saturation and far better customer information, advertising no longer needs to push information at customers. Instead, the book features cases of "pull" advertising -- digital, live events and social networks formed as a response to an advertising brief.
