Max Jones, "The Last Great Quest: Captain Scott’s Antarctic Sacrifice"
Oxford University Press | ISBN 0192805703 | 2004 | PDF | 1 MB | 369 pages
Scott's last Antarctic expedition is one of the great adventure stories of the twentieth century. On 1 November 1911, a British team set out on the gruelling 800-mile journey across the coldest and highest continent on Earth to travel to the South Pole. Five men battled through unimaginably harsh conditions only to find the Norwegian flag had been planted at the Pole just weeks before. Captain Robert Falcon Scott, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, Petty Officer Edgar Evans, Captain Lawrence Oates, and Dr Edward Wilson all died on the return trek, starved and frozen to death, only eleven miles from a supply camp.

Show Me Microsoft Office Excel 2003
Que; 1st edition | ISBN: 0789730057 | 448 pages | September 15, 2003 | CHM | 15 Mb
Microsoft Office Excel 2003 provides powerful new tools with which to create, analyze, and share spreadsheet information. Excel 2003 takes advantage of the latest technologies such as XML and Microsoft SharePoint to extend desktop productivity and workspace collaboration over an intranet or the Internet. This book covers these changes, as well as smart tags, which are far more flexible in Excel 2003, and several statistical functions that have been improved to make data analysis easier. Show Me's visual format highlights these usability features for new or upgrading users, especially those upgrading from Office 97 or Office 2000. Though Excel 2003 has the fewest changes of all the Office applications, new and upgrading users will need a resource to quickly get them working with the software. This book's succinct yet complete coverage does just that! Additional features of this book include a "Troubleshooting Guide" to help solve common problems and a "Project Guide" with a listing of real-world projects by feature, as well as a "MOS Exam Guide" with a complete listing of MOS objectives and page numbers to locate the objectives. This feature gives the series a definite advantage over competing visual titles.

Nino Luraghi, "The Historian's Craft in the Age of Herodotus"
Oxford University Press | ISBN 0199215111 | 2007 | PDF | 2 MB | 273 pages
| “ | This is not only a book on Herodotus, but also a study of the origins of Greek historiography. Rather than investigate what made Herodotus a unique figure in the history of historiography, most of the essays collected here focus on attitudes which Herodotus shared with his contemporaries, historians and others, and on aspects which make him a typical product of his time. This emphasis confronted us with a further choice. Herodotus’Histories are an account of past events and foreign lands and habits, and at the same time a critical enquiry, which may as such profitably be compared with the enquiries which were being carried out in Greece in the same period and in the most diferent fields by philosophers, scientists, and other ‘intellectuals’. | ” |

Springer (2005-11-07) | ISBN 1402032072 | 388 Pages | PDF | 5.3 Mb
Testing of Integrated Circuits is important to ensure the production of fault-free chips. However, testing is becoming cumbersome and expensive due to the increasing complexity of these ICs. Technology development has made it possible to produce chips where a complete system, with an enormous transistor count, operating at a high clock frequency, is placed on a single die - SOC (System-on-Chip). The device size miniaturization leads to new fault types, the increasing clock frequencies enforces testing for timing faults, and the increasing transistor count results in a higher number of possible fault sites. Testing must handle all these new challenges in an efficient manner having a global system perspective.

The geometric orientation of Art Deco and its brilliant hard colors make this style perfect for the medium of stained glass. This collection contains 91 newly rendered, yet authentic, Art Deco patterns, which constitute a rich source of ideas for stained glass workers. The designs represent the major Art Deco motifs and sub-styles - abstract patterns in bold straight-line and curved motifs; representations of men and women in characteristic 1920's garb; geometrically stylized birds, trees and animals; and the flowing forms of flowers and plants that are a holdover from the Art Nouveau period.

The recent expansion of aikido on a world-wide scale is nothing less than phenomel. McGraw-Hill Machining and Metalworking Handbook (McGraw-Hill Handbooks)
Denis Cormier | Publisher: McGraw-Hill Professional | Pages:1006 | 2005-09-23 | ISBN:0071457879 | OCRed PDF|17mb
The Handbook is ideal for a machinist, mechanical engineer or anyone else who makes a living in metalworking. It concisely spans the field. Straightforwardly written. Many topics are explained. From common sheet metal practices to the latest machine tools. Technology also figures prominently elsewhere in the book. There is a chapter on computer aided design and manufacturing. It explains the essence of software packages in this arena. With tables of CAD providers, and vendors who offer extensive component libraries. While you could certainly use a CAD package to design your own custom parts, it may be more cost effective to see if an existing library has what you need. Another chapter covers solid freeform production. Using methods like electron beam melting or selective laser sintering. Or 3D printing, where a solid part is catalysed out of a special liquid. All this might sound exotic to some of you. But it's worthwhile to keep informed of such techniques.

Darwin, His Daughter, and Human Evolution
Riverhead Trade | November 5, 2002 | English | ISBN:1573229555 | 446 pages | PDF | 3.4 MB
In this intimate portrait of the great naturalist as devoted family man, Keynes describes how Charles Darwin's "life and his science were all of a piece." The great-great-grandson of the scientist, Keynes uses published documents as well as family papers and artifacts to show how Darwin's thinking on evolution was influenced by his deep attachment to his wife and children. In particular, his anguish over his 10-year-old daughter Annie's death sharpened his conviction that the operation of natural laws had nothing to do with divine intervention or morality. Keynes, also a descendant of economist John Maynard Keynes, shows that much of Darwin's intellectual struggle in writing On the Origin of Species and The Descent of Man arose from his efforts to understand the role of suffering and death in the natural order of the world. Early in his career, Darwin saw the indifference of natural law as an answer to the era's religious doubts about how a benevolent god could permit human misery; cruelty and pain, he argued, should not be seen as moral issues, but as inevitable outcomes of nature. After Annie's death, however, Darwin's views darkened, and in a private letter he railed against the "clumsy, wasteful, bl***ering low and horridly cruel works of nature!" Though Keynes doesn't break new ground about Darwin's life and work, he produces a moving tribute to a thinker who, despite intimate acquaintance with the pain inflicted by the "war of nature," could still marvel that, from this ruthless struggle, "endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved." Photos not seen by PW. (Jan.)Forecast: General readers attracted by the book's warm, sentimental cover won't be disappointed by Keynes's equally accessible prose.

Medicine, Magic and Religion

One of the most fascinating men of his generation, W.H.R. Rivers was a British doctor and psychiatrist as well as a leading ethnologist. Immortalized as the hero of Pat Barker's award-winning Regeneration trilogy, Rivers was the clinician who, in the First World War, cared for the poet Siegfried Sassoon and other infantry officers injured on the western front. His researches into the borders of psychiatry, medicine and religion made him a prominent member of the British intelligentsia of the time, a friend of H.G. Wells, George Bernard Shaw and Bertrand Russell. Part of his appeal lay in an extraordinary intellect, mixed with a very real interest in his fellow man. Medicine, Magic and Religion is a prime example of this. A social institution, it is one of Rivers' finest works. In it, Rivers introduced the then revolutionary idea that indigenous practices are indeed rational, when viewed in terms of religious beliefs.

Genome: The Autobiography of a Species in 23 Chapters (P.S.)
Harper Perennial | 0060894083 | Edition -2006-06-01 | PDF | 368 pages | 1.57 MB | Rapidshare & Megaupload
The genome's been mapped. But what does it mean? Arguably the most significant scientific discovery of the new century, the mapping of the twenty-three pairs of chromosomes that make up the human genome raises almost as many questions as it answers. Questions that will profoundly impact the way we think about disease, about longevity, and about free will. Questions that will affect the rest of your life.
Genome offers extraordinary insight into the ramifications of this incredible breakthrough. By picking one newly discovered gene from each pair of chromosomes and telling its story, Matt Ridley recounts the history of our species and its ancestors from the dawn of life to the brink of future medicine. From Huntington's disease to cancer, from the applications of gene therapy to the horrors of eugenics, Matt Ridley probes the scientific, philosophical, and moral issues arising as a result of the mapping of the genome. It will help you understand what this scientific milestone means for you, for your children, and for humankind.

Excellent beginners book into the fun of electronic lab Yannis Tsividis gives us a great beginners book into electronics. I found the instruction very concise and though it seems basic to the casual eye, is extremely helpful in learning from the beginning...where anyone should start, right? I learned about nor gates which was extremely fun and interesting, including trying to create my own schematic of a closed circuit relay. Once you can master the basics you are ready to go on to more advanced electronics, which can include building your very own radio!
