The ultimate aim of this resource is stated in an introductory essay written by contributor Gerald W. Fry: "It is our hope that this set will enhance both economic and geographic literacy critically needed in an increasingly interconnected world." The editors and contributors attempt to accomplish this by presenting a series of accessible articles that methodically analyze the economic structures and financial climates of 198 countries and territories.
Countries are arranged in alphabetical order within four regional volumes. The country entries have two goals: to present a clear picture of current economic conditions and to provide statistical data that will allow for comparative interpretations. Within entries, information is divided into 14 standardized subdivisions, among them a country overview; an overview of the economy; a section on politics, government, and taxation; and a section on infrastructure, power and communications. Subsequent sections treat economic sectors, agriculture, industry, services, international trade, money, poverty and wealth, working conditions, the country's history and economic development (in time-line format), and future trends. A fifteenth subdivision looks at the economies of any dependencies, colonies, or territories. A country-specific bibliography of print and electronic sources completes each entry.

Each alphabetical entry provides an overview and then covers topics such as "Company Finances," "Analysts' Opinions," "History," "Strategy," "Current Trends," and "Global Presence." Each article ends with a bibliography and, often, a Web-site address to access an annual report. "Fast Facts," a chronology, and sidebars are also incorporated into the four- to six-page entries. Many high-profile and youth-oriented companies are included: The Gap, Hard Rock Cafe, PEZ Candy, Victoria's Secret, Tommy Hilfiger, and Rollerblade. Lycos and AOL are profiled, but students may be disappointed not to find eBay or Amazon.com. Graphs, company logos, and occasional black-and-white photos of products or headquarters are provided. Volume one begins with a "Chronology of Key Business Events"; volume two ends with 35 "Industry Profiles," a "Directory of Specialized Business Web Sites," and a complete index. The first edition of this set was published in 2002. The format of the second edition is the same--more than 20 major topics subdivided, with the subsections having articles of two to six pages, most ending with a short bibliography and addresses or URLs of pertinent government agencies or private organizations. The introductory overview of the American legal system is still found in both volumes, but the index and glossary are still in volume 2 only.
It appears that 10 of the major topics were not revised but 2 new subjects were added--"Homeland Security" and "Tort and Personal Injury Actions." Two of the subtopics in the new tort chapter, "Assault" and "Battery," were not even in the index of the first edition. Some of the subtopics have additions or revisions, consistent with what has occurred in the last few years. "Business Law" has a new section on officer and director liability, and "Consumer Issues" has new sections on consumer-debt collection and identity theft. "Criminal Law" has added topics on DNA testing and sex offenders.
