Advances in Chemical Physics, The Role of Degenerate States in Chemistry
Publisher: Wiley-Interscience | ISBN: 0471438170 | edition 2002 | PDF | 813 pages | 14,9 mb
Few of us can any longer keep up with the flood of scientific literature, even in specialized subfields. Any attempt to do more and be broadly educated with respect to a large domain of science has the appearance of tilting at windmills. Yet the synthesis of ideas drawn from different subjects into new, powerful, general concepts is as valuable as ever, and the desire to remain educated persists in all scientists. This series, Advancesin Chemical Physics, is devoted to helping the reader obtain general information about a wide variety of topics in chemical physics, a field that we interpret very broadly. Our intent is to have experts present comprehensive analyses of subjects of interest and to encourage the expression of individual points of view. We hope that this approach to the presentation of an overview of a subject will both stimulate new research and serve as a personalized learning text for beginners in a field.

An Introduction to Systems Science
Publisher: World Scientific Publishing Company | ISBN: 981256702X | edition 2006 | PDF | 429 pages | 16,6 mb
This is the first book that renders a thorough discussion of systems science. It draws on material from an extensive collection of external sources, including several other books and a special library collection complete with videotape empirical evidence of applicability of the theory to a wide variety of circumstances. This is essential because systems science must be responsive to diverse human situations of the widest difficulty, and it must fill the void that the specific sciences cannot fill, because these sciences are insensitive to the necessities of reconciling disparate views of multiple observers, and incorporating local conditions in hypotheses that precede inductive explorations.

Encyclopedia of Sociology (5 Volume Set)
Publisher: Gacl | ISBN: 0028648536 | edition 2000 | PDF | 3516 pages | 12,8 mb
In his preface, editor-in-chief Borgatta also editor-in-chief of the first edition (LJ 7/92), a Dartmouth Medal winner offers two reasons for this revision: public interest and changes in some areas of sociology leading to the realization that "a substantial and thoughtful addition of titles would add breadth and depth to the Encyclopedia." The new encyclopedia presents essays written by scholars about a large number of topics within the broad field of sociology. It continues to be useful both for scholars and professionals investigating new areas of study and for students needing introductory overviews. Where the first edition contains 370 essays in four volumes, the second edition has expanded to five volumes with 60 new essays. New articles include "Censorship and the Regulation of Expression," "Futures Studies as Human and Social Activity," and "Internet." The new edition also revises and updates many of the original essays. For instance, "Feminist Theory" now discusses the 1990s, and its secondary bibliography includes texts published in 1995 and 1999. The second edition also reflects changes in our society and academics by incorporating some topics into different essays or changing the titles of certain articles. As with the first edition, the arrangement is alphabetical by topic. The signed essays provide a thorough and detailed overview of the subject. Secondary bibliographies and See also references occur at the end of each essay. This excellent new edition of an already highly regarded encyclopedia is highly recommended for all academic and larger public libraries.

Николай Якубович. Истребители Лавочкина. Сломавшие хребет Люфтваффе
Яуза/Эксмо | 2008 | ISBN: 5699272884 | Russian | 210*2 Pages | PDF | 106,8 MB

Dynamics of Crowd-Minds: Patterns of Irrationality in Emotions, Beliefs And Actions
Publisher: World Scientific Publishing Company | ISBN: 9812562869 | edition 2005 | PDF | 264 pages | 11,7 mb
A crowd-mind emerges when formation of a crowd causes fusion of individual minds into one collective mind. Members of the crowd lose their individuality. The deindividuation leads to derationalization: emotional, impulsive and irrational behavior, self-catalytic activities, memory impairment, perceptual distortion, hyper-responsiveness, and distortion of traditional forms and structures. This book presents unique results of computational studies on cognitive and affective space-time processes in large-scale collectives of abstract agents being far from mental equilibrium. Computational experiments demonstrate that the irrational and nonsensical behavior of individual entities of crowd-mind results in complex, rich and non-trivial spatio-temporal dynamics of the agent collectives. Mathematical methods employ theory and techniques of cellular-automata and lattice swarms, applied algebra, theory of finite automata and Markov chains, and elementary differential equations.

Rules of Play: Game Design Fundamentals
Publisher: The MIT Press | ISBN: 0262240459 | edition 2003 | CHM | 688 pages | 7,3 mb
As pop culture, games are as important as film or television--but game design has yet to develop a theoretical framework or critical vocabulary. In Rules of Play Katie Salen and Eric Zimmerman present a much-needed primer for this emerging field. They offer a unified model for looking at all kinds of games, from board games and sports to computer and video games. As active participants in game culture, the authors have written Rules of Play as a catalyst for innovation, filled with new concepts, strategies, and methodologies for creating and understanding games.. Building an aesthetics of interactive systems, Salen and Zimmerman define core concepts like "play," "design," and "interactivity." They look at games through a series of eighteen "game design schemas," or conceptual frameworks, including games as systems of emergence and information, as contexts for social play, as a storytelling medium, and as sites of cultural resistance. Written for game scholars, game developers, and interactive designers, Rules of Play is a textbook, reference book, and theoretical guide. It is the first comprehensive attempt to establish a solid theoretical framework for the emerging discipline of game design.

Why We Feel
Publisher: Basic Books | ISBN: 0738203165 | edition 2000 | PDF | 221 pages | 20,7 mb
How did feelings evolve? How do they develop within us? What is their function, their use to us? How does our nervous system implement them?
These four questions, posed in somewhat different form by the Nobel Prize-winning biologist Niko Tinbergen, propel psychologist Victor Johnston's well-crafted examination of human emotions. Drawing on recent advances in psychology, biology, and the cognitive sciences, he looks into such matters as the role of the emotions in psychological well-being ("the failure to develop an early emotional bond with a single caretaker leads to slow development, withdrawal, depression, and a variety of later developing social problems") and the adaptive advantages--or, at times, disadvantages--of such deep-seated inner feelings as envy and joy. Where earlier scientists were much given to exploring the emotions as responses to external stimuli, Johnston shows that "input from the external world is really not necessary for conscious experiences to occur," as experiments in dreams, sensory deprivation, and hallucinations have shown. Instead, he considers the rich inner world of the emotions as a problem of evolutionary theory, a matter of adaptation and response that favors the survival of genes. Johnston's overview of the science of emotions makes for consistently interesting reading, and it points the way to further research.

Digital Phoenix: Why the Information Economy Collapsed and How It Will Rise Again
Publisher: The MIT Press | ISBN: 0262511967 | edition 2006 | PDF | 375 pages | 10,3 mb
Abramson, a lawyer with a Ph.D. in computer science and an interest in microeconomics, has an explanation for the dot-com bubble's collapse based in classical economics: confused by network theorists, giddy investors assumed well-timed dot-com startups would reap monopoly profits from a geometrically expanding Web (hence the bubble), while, in fact, the Internet proved a hotbed of cutthroat price competition where profits are hard to come by (hence the collapse). With that out of the way, the bulk of Abramson's book is taken up with what he sees as the engine for new growth: intellectual property rights. Case studies include the Microsoft antitrust case, the rise of Linux as an open source alternative to Windows, and the recording industry's battle against free downloading channels like Napster. Abramson gives an intricate but lucid and engaging account of these controversies, illuminating the interplay of copyright and patent law, technology and marketing. He makes a case both for the government's role in policing abuses of intellectual property rights—Microsoft, he believes, is indeed a monopolist—and for a relaxed intellectual property regime that fosters competition and innovation.

Disordered Mind and Brain
Publisher: RCPsych Publications | ISBN: 190124265X | edition 2001 | PDF | 344 pages | 14,8 mb
Modern neuroscience has provided us with a foundation for understanding mental disorders in terms of brain dysfunction. Imaging techniques, such as PET and fMRI, have demonstrated graphically the correspondence between patterns of brain activity and patterns of mental activity. This book draws on evidence from neuroimaging studies, together with evidence from the fields of neuropsychology, cognitive psychology, electrophysiology, neurochemistry and pharmacology, to generate a coherent and plausible account of cerebral processes by which mental symptoms are generated. It is intended for psychiatrists and psychologists with an interest in the origins of the symptoms they observe and treat, as well as for neuroscience students and researchers interested in the relationship between findings from the laboratory and the mental disorders that occur in clinical practice. Indeed it is intended for anyone with a serious interest in how the mind works, and in how mental disorders arise.

Lectures on Symplectic Geometry (Lecture Notes in Mathematics)
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 3540421955 | edition 2001 | PDF | 229 pages | 11 mb
The goal of these notes is to provide a fast introduction to symplectic geometry for graduate students with some knowledge of differential geometry, de Rham theory and classical Lie groups. This text covers symplectomorphisms, local forms, contact manifold, compatible almost complex structures, Kaehler manifolds, hamiltonian mechanics, moments maps, symplectic reduction and symplectic toric manifolds. It contains guided problems, called homework, designed to complement the exposition or extend the reader's understanding. There are by now excellent references on symplectic geometry, a subset of which is in the bibliography of this book. However, the most efficient introduction to a subject is often a short elementary treatment, and these notes attempt to serve that purpose. This text provides a taste of areas of current research and will prepare the reader to explore recent papers and extensive books on symplectic geometry where the pace is much faster.

Mapping Hacks: Tips & Tools for Electronic Cartography
Publisher: O'Reilly Media | ISBN: 0596007035 | edition 2005 | CHM | 568 pages | 33,5 mb
Since the dawn of creation, man has designed maps to help identify the space that we occupy. From Lewis and Clark's pencil-sketched maps of mountain trails to Jacques Cousteau's sophisticated charts of the ocean floor, creating maps of the utmost precision has been a constant pursuit. So why should things change now?
Well, they shouldn't. The reality is that map creation, or "cartography," has only improved in its ease-of-use over time. In fact, with the recent explosion of inexpensive computing and the growing availability of public mapping data, mapmaking today extends all the way to the ordinary PC user.
Mapping Hacks, the latest page-turner from O'Reilly Press, tackles this notion head on. It's a collection of one hundred simple--and mostly free--techniques available to developers and power users who want draw digital maps or otherwise visualize geographic data. Authors Schuyler Erle, Rich Gibson, and Jo Walsh do more than just illuminate the basic concepts of location and cartography, they walk you through the process one step at a time.

I think the set overreaches in that it tries to cover too much material in three volumes. I think that compressive coverage of narrower focus would have been better than shorting really important political issues such as the potential for manipulation of the bacterial and viral genomes by governments to start pandemics in targeted racial or ethnic groups. There are some otherwise good science articles that fail to even hint at the still unknown the extent of the U.S. government's invasion into personal privacy. But I am most disappointed that the authors kept to the "official" historical line on the role of intelligence agencies in matters such as the Kennedy assassination. Other conspiracies, and the facts supporting them, are also ignored or glossed over in favor of science and technology articles that lose sight of the grander manipulation of intelligence by governments for political gain. While the book lists suspected terrorist organizations, the terrorist actions of the U.S. government and its sometimes allies are also ignored. Younger readers and the general public would be better served by a brighter light on the dirty corners into which secrets are sometimes swept.

Publisher: The Institution of Engineering and Technology | ISBN: 0852964447 | edition 2003 | CHM | 264 pages | 2,2 mb
This book examines the background to regulation and the work of the regulator. It discusses typical regulatory rules and the legal and administrative framework for regulation, and looks at regulatory strategies, market structures and approaches to price control. The book includes a number of case studies which show how regulators engage with such topical issues as interconnection and loop unbundling, and also features technical coverage of both numbering and number portability. Finally, it looks at new products and services such as virtual network operators, intelligent networks, radio spectrum and next generation networks, and considers the impact these might have on the future of regulation. Publication of this book is very timely since it includes coverage of the four new European Directives on Telecommunications Regulation (the Framework Directive, the Access and Interconnection Directive, the Authorisation Directive and the Universal Service Directive) due to come into force on 23 July 2003. A comprehensive, in-depth guide to the subject, this book will be a valuable resource for engineers and managers in the industry, as well as lawyers and economists needing an insight into current telecommunications regulation.

The Flying Saucers Are Real
Publisher: Cosimo Classics | ISBN: 1596050020 | edition 2004 | PDF | 207 pages | 15,1 mb
Donald Keyhoe was there first. He didn't invent the UFO phenomenon, but he became its first authoritative private spokesman. In 1949, TRUE magazine asked aviation writer and retired Marine Corps Major Donald Keyhoe to look into the flying saucer enigma, which had burst onto the scene just two years previously. With information from his friends in the military, Keyhoe concluded that the objects came from outer space and that the Air Force was covering up the story to prevent panic.
"The article caused a sensation and a year later Keyhoe expanded it into this landmark book, THE FLYING SAUCERS ARE REAL. In a personal, no-nonsense style, Keyhoe provides the details of his investigation: he talks with the witnesses, reviews the history of the phenomenon, and attempts to pry open the secrecy lid the Air Force had clamped down on the subject. Keyhoe would go on to write four more books on the subject and in 1957 he became director of the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena, without a doubt the most influential private UFO organization of all time. But it is this book, which sold a half-million copies, that inspired hundreds of people to take up the UFO cause and established the core elements of UFO mythology, which the government has attempted to counter--unsuccessfully, I might add--to this very day.

Modeling Phase Transitions in the Brain (Springer Series in Computational Neuroscience)
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 1441907955 | edition 2010 | PDF | 325 pages | 12,1 mb
The induction of unconsciousness using anesthetic agents demonstrates that the cerebral cortex can operate in two very different behavioral modes: alert and responsive vs. unaware and quiescent. But the states of wakefulness and sleep are not single-neuron properties---they emerge as bulk properties of cooperating populations of neurons, with the switchover between states being similar to the physical change of phase observed when water freezes or ice melts. Some brain-state transitions, such as sleep cycling, anesthetic induction, epileptic seizure, are obvious and detected readily with a few EEG electrodes; others, such as the emergence of gamma rhythms during cognition, or the ultra-slow BOLD rhythms of relaxed free-association, are much more subtle. The unifying theme of this book is the notion that all of these bulk changes in brain behavior can be treated as phase transitions between distinct brain states.

Publisher: William Morrow & Co | ISBN: 0688097197 | edition 1992 | PDF | 432 pages | 12,6 mb
While those individuals at risk or who already have heart disease would benefit greatly from this comprehensive volume, any person with an interest in learning about the heart and its connection to other systems in the body will find this book fascinating and highly informative. It is written at a fairly high educational level but incorporates medical terms with their definitions in such a way that it is very readable, both in format and content. Divided into six sections, this comprehensive work covers the heart and its function, discusses ways to lower one's risk of heart disease, and explains how diagnoses are made. It also includes an Encyclopedia of Common Heart Disorders that lists major cardiovascular disorders and treatments, and special sections on women, different ethnic and racial groups, and age groupings. Charts and tables abound, including ways to rate one's own heart risk and advice on changing to a healthier lifestyle. This book not only tells the reader what to change but also details how to do it. However, it skims over the emotional aspects of heart disease and should have done more with patients' rights and responsibilities. But in all other aspects, it is the most in-depth, comprehensive lay text this reviewer has ever seen.

Publisher: RAND Corporation | ISBN: 0833047345 | edition 2009 | PDF | 239 pages | 13,6 mb
Cyberspace, where information--and hence serious value--is stored and manipulated, is a tempting target. An attacker could be a person, group, or state and may disrupt or corrupt the systems from which cyberspace is built. When states are involved, it is tempting to compare fights to warfare, but there are important differences. The author addresses these differences and ways the United States protect itself in the face of attack.

E. (Earl) Ray Hutchison Encyclopedia of Urban Studies)
Sage Publications, Inc | 2009 | ISBN: 1412914329 | 1080 pages | PDF | 16 MB
The United Nations estimates that by 2030, more than two-thirds of the total world population will live in urban areas. Most of this increase will take place not in Europe or in the United States but in the megacities and newly emerging urban regions of what used to be called the developing world.
Urban studies is an expansive and growing field, covering many disciplines and professional fields, each with its own schedule of conferences, journals, and publication series. These two volumes address the specific theories, key studies, and important figures that have influenced not just the individual discipline but also the field of urban studies more generally. The Encyclopedia of Urban Studies is intended to present an overview of current work in the field and to serve as a guide for further reading in the field.

From the colonial wars before 1775 to our 1997 peacekeeper role in Bosnia, the work briefly explores the historical background of each war period, enabling the reader to place each of the more than 500 entries into their proper context.

The Cactus Family
Timber Press | 2001 | ISBN: 0881924989 | 776 pages | PDF | 149 Mb
The strange spiny spectacle of cactus plants comes under close and expert scrutiny in this study of great breadth and fascinating detail. Amateur growers and scholars alike will be able to delve into Anderson's treatise and come away with increased understanding of the nearly two thousand species comprising an extraordinary family of New World succulents. On a practical level, Anderson is an eminently inviting writer who delivers intriguing descriptions of the characteristics that set these plants apart. He also presents brief but brilliant surveys of ethnobotany and conservation issues. While more than 1,000 photographs overall illustrate the extraordinary diversity and beautiful flowers of cacti, the main section--an alphabetically arranged reference--will arguably rank as the definitive work readers will use to examine and identify cactus genera, species, and subspecies.

William E. Burns Witch Hunts in Europe and America: An Encyclopedia
Greenwood | 2003 | ISBN: 0313321426 | 400 pages | PDF | 26.7 MB
From the wicked witch of children's stories to Halloween and present-day Wiccan groups, witches and witchcraft still fascinate observers of Western culture. Witches were believed to affect climatological catastrophes, put spells on their neighbours and cavort with the devil. In early modern Europe and the Americas, witches and witch-hunting were an integral part of everyday life, touching major events such as the Reformation and the Scientific Revolution, as well as politics, law, medicine and culture. From early sorcery trials of the 14th century - associated primarily with French and Papal courts - to the witch executions of the late 18th century, this title's entries cover witch-hunting in individual countries; major witch trials from Chelmsford, England, to Salem, Massachusetts; and significant individuals from famous witches to the devout persecutors. Entries such as the evil eye, familiars, and witch-finders cover specific aspects of the witch-hunting process, while entries on writers and modern interpretations provide insight into the current thinking on early modern witch hunts.

Mark W Denny, Steve Gaines Encyclopedia of Tidepools and Rocky Shores (Encyclopedias of the Natural World)
University of California Press | 2007 | ISBN: 0520251180 | 735 pages | PDF | 37,8 MB
Tidepools and rocky shores are among the most physically stressful environments on earth. When the tide is high, waves can sweep over plants and animals at velocities as high as 60 miles per hour, while at low tide, the same organisms dry up and bake in the sun. Yet despite this seeming inhospitality, tidepools and rocky shores are exceptionally complex and biologically diverse. This comprehensive encyclopedia is an authoritative, one-stop reference for everyone interested in the biology and ecology of this fascinating and uniquely accessible environment. Conveniently arranged alphabetically, nearly 200 wide-ranging entries written in clear language by scientists from around the world provide a state-of-the-art picture of tidepools and rocky shore science. From Abalones, Barnacles, and Climate Change through Seagrasses, Tides, and Wind, the articles discuss the animals and plants that live in tidepools, the physics and chemistry of the rocky shore environment, the ecological principles that govern tidepools, and many other interdisciplinary topics.
