The First Cold War: The Legacy of Woodrow Wilson in U.S.-Soviet Relations
Publisher: University of Missouri Press | ISBN: 082621388X | edition 2002 | PDF | 344 pages | 2,92 mb
In The First Cold War, Donald E. Davis and Eugene P. Trani review the Wilson administration's attitudes toward Russia before, during, and after the Bolshevik seizure of power. They argue that before the Russian Revolution, Woodrow Wilson had little understanding of Russia and made poor appointments that cost the United States Russian goodwill. Wilson later reversed those negative impressions by being the first to recognize Russia's Provisional Government, resulting in positive U.S.-Russian relations until Lenin gained power in 1917. Wilson at first seemed unsure whether to recognize or repudiate Lenin and the Bolsheviks. His vacillation finally ended in a firm repudiation when he opted for a diplomatic quarantine having almost all of the ingredients of the later Cold War. Davis and Trani argue that Wilson deserves mild criticism for his early indecision and inability to form a coherent policy toward what would become the Soviet Union.

Deconstructing the American Mosque: Space, Gender, and Aesthetics
Publisher: University of Texas Press | ISBN: 0292743440 | edition 2002 | PDF | 208 pages | 10,5 mb
"This text will be the classic work in the field. . . . It will be extremely useful for general Islamic studies, for studies of religion in America, and for the study of Islam in America." --Aminah Beverly McCloud, Associate Professor of Islamic Studies, DePaul University, Chicago From the avant-garde design of the Islamic Cultural Center in New York City to the simplicity of the Dar al-Islam Mosque in Abiquiu, New Mexico, the American mosque takes many forms of visual and architectural expression. The absence of a single, authoritative model and the plurality of design nuances reflect the heterogeneity of the American Muslim community itself, which embodies a whole spectrum of ethnic origins, traditions, and religious practices. In this book, Akel Ismail Kahera explores the history and theory of Muslim religious aesthetics in the United States since 1950.

Vietnam War (America at War) By Maurice Isserman, John S. Bowman
Publisher: Facts on File | ISBN: 0816049378 | edition 2003 | PDF | 192 pages | 3,4 mb
This riveting history includes a clear discussion of the roots of American involvement in Indochina in the days just after World War II and goes on to explore the varied and complex motives behind America's effort to halt the spread of communism in Asia. In clear, lucid prose, Maurice Isserman explores the critical questions surrounding the United States experience in Vietnam: What led President Lyndon Baines Johnson to commit combat troops in 1965? How was it possible for North Vietnamese to suffer a military defeat in the Tet Offensive in 1968 and yet achieve a political victory? What has America learned from the experience of fighting in Vietnam? The need for objective and accurate information about the Vietnam War has never been greater than it is today.

New York by Gas-Light and Other Urban Sketches
Publisher: University of California Press | ISBN: 0520067223 | edition 1990 | CHM | 251 pages | 2,36 mb
First published in 1850, New York by Gas-Light explores the seamy side of the newly emerging metropolis: "the festivities of prostitution, the orgies of pauperism, the haunts of theft and murder, the scenes of drunkenness and beastly debauch, and all the sad realities that go to make up the lower stratum--the underground story--of life in New York!" The author of this lively and fascinating little book, which both attracted and offended large numbers of readers in Victorian America, was George G. Foster, reporter for Horace Greeley's influential New York Tribune, social commentator, poet, and man about town. Foster drew on his daily and nightly rambles through the city's streets and among the characters of the urban demi-monde to produce a sensationalized but extraordinarily revealing portrait of New York at the moment it was emerging as a major metropolis. Reprinted here with sketches from two of Foster's other books, New York by Gas-Light will be welcomed by students of urban social history, popular culture, literature, and journalism.

The History of Iran
Publisher: Greenwood Press | ISBN: 0313307318 | edition 2000 | CHM | 320 pages | 1,05 mb
With almost three thousand years of history, Iran is home to one of the world's richest and most complex cultures. Yet to the average American the name Iran probably conjures up an image of a remote and upstart country inhabited by a people whose religious fanaticism is matched only by the intensity of their disdain for the United States and its values, who speak an obscure tongue called Farsi, and whose identity is not clearly distinguished from that of their Arab neighbors. This work offers an objective and engagingly written portrait of the Iranian people and their complex history from the perspective of one of the world's foremost experts on the country. It is ideal for student use and for the interested reader.

The Culture of Slander in Early Modern England
Publisher: Cambridge University Press | ISBN: 0521584086 | edition 1997 | CHM | 164 pages | 1,03 mb
Slander constitutes a central social, legal and literary concern of early modern England. M. Lindsay Kaplan reveals it to be an effective, if unstable, means of repudiating one's opposition, and shows how it was deployed by rulers and poets including Spenser, Jonson and Shakespeare. Her study challenges recent claims that the state controlled poets' criticisms by means of censorship, arguing instead that power relations between poets and the state are more accurately described in terms of the reversible charge of slander.

Publisher: Walter de Gruyter | ISBN: 9783110194999 | edition 2008 | PDF | 411 pages | 2,1 mb
Product Description:
The Book of Sirach raises many questions: philological, exegetical, literary, historical, theological. There were even confessional questions which divided the traditions of synagogues and churches. It is, therefore, a fascinating book, located on the edges of the canon. Does the book attempt to repair the harm done by the erosive criticism of Job and Qoheleth, or is it the work of a thoughtful interpreter who, in a time of change, seeks to bear the tradition towards the new situation emerging from the Hellenistic Diaspora? Is it a book which aims at the restoration of the true faith against the autonomous questing of human wisdom, or is it merely a sincere, if shrewd, experiment at dialogue between the legitimate reasoning of the world and the wisdom given in the Law? According to a well-tried methodology of juxtaposing the specialists of different schools, this volume presents an up to date consideration of historical, exegetical and theological research.

American Bomber Crewman 1941-45 Warrior 119
Osprey | 68 Pages | Gregory Fremont-Barnes | ISBN: 1846031257 | English | PDF | 2008 | 25MB
Gregory Fremont-Barnes examines the lives of the American Bomber Crewmen of the Eighth Air Force, "The Mighty Eighth", who crewed, maintained and repaired the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses and the B-24 Liberators that flew from the airfields of Norfolk and Suffolk and other counties of England. He highlights the physical and psychological strain placed on these brave men. Long bombing missions called for brute strength to control the aircraft and extraordinary endurance to fly for hours at 20,000 feet at temperatures below freezing in unheated, unpressurized cabins. Then there were Luftwaffe fighters and anti-aircraft fire to contend with and it required incredible skill and some luck to return from a mission unscathed. This book is a fitting tribute to these often uncelebrated heroes who took the war deep into the Third Reich, as well as a fascinating historical account of the experiences they went through.

Manfred Griehl - German Rocket Planes
Greenhill Books | 2000 | ISBN: 1853674044 | 74 pages | PDF | 82.12 MB
Luftwaffe at War 14
As the Allies intensified their bombing of the Third Reich and the Luftwaffe's conventional fighters seemed taxed to their very limit, the sudden appearance of rocket aircraft in May 1944 marked the advent of Germany's last hope. The first rocket planes were being tested by January 1944, and a handful of these advanced fighters would take to the sky, destined for a short but violent life in the face of Allied air superiority. This brilliant addition to the series presents extremely rare photos of Germany's rocket planes and vividly captures the wartime career of the Third Reich's secret weapons. Using images taken of aircraft under development and in the field, this comprehensive study examines the rocket planes appearance and markings and the pilots who flew and tested the aircraft. The book covers the Me 163B (Komet), Me 163BV1, Me 163AV4, as well as a number of key experimental planes.
96 b/w and 10 color photographs.

The number of hazardous waste sites across the United States has grown to approximately 217,000, with billions of cubic yards of soil, sediment, and groundwater plumes requiring remediation. Sites contaminated with recalcitrant contaminants or with complex hydrogeological features have proved to be a significant challenge to cleanup on every level—technologically, financially, legally, and sociopolitically. Like many federal agencies, the Navy is a responsible party with a large liability in hazardous waste sites.

The Origins of the Second World War
Publisher: Penguin Books Lt | ISBN: 014013672X | edition 1995 | RTF | 368 pages | 2,30 mb
One of the most popular and controversial historians of the twentieth century, who made his subject accessible to millions, A.J.P. Taylor caused a storm of outrage with this scandalous bestseller. Debunking what were accepted truths about the Second World War, he argued provocatively that Hitler did not set out to cause the war as part of an evil master plan, but blundered into it partly by accident, aided by the shortcomings of others. Fiercely attacked for vindicating Hitler, A.J.P. Taylor's stringent re-examination of the events preceding the Nazi invasion of Poland on 1st September 1939 opened up new debate, and is now recognized as a brilliant and classic piece of scholarly research. 'Highly original and penetrating...No one who has digested this enthralling work will ever be able to look at the period again in quite the same way' - "Sunday Telegraph".

Citizens More than Soldiers: The Kentucky Militia and Society in the Early Republic
Publisher: University of Nebraska Press | ISBN: 0803229704 | edition 2007 | PDF | 230 pages | 1,23 mb
Historians typically depict nineteenth-century militiamen as drunken buffoons who stumbled into crooked lines, poked each other with cornstalk weapons, and inevitably shot their commander in the backside with a rusty, antiquated musket. Citizens More than Soldiers demonstrates that, to the contrary, the militia remained an active civil institution in the early nineteenth century, affecting the era’s great social, political, and economic transitions. In fact, given their degree of community involvement, militiamen were more influential in Kentucky’s maturation than any other formal community organization...

This is the story of the Mosquito's design and development, its operational use, with both the RAF and USAAF, and of its production in the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia. Appendices list the many variants, production totals and nightfighter kills. This volume contains many rare and unpublished photographs.

Under such rubrics as commerce, labor, and status, Crook explains in minute detail the workings of law as it related to society and social relations. Beware, this is specialized Roman history. Long before Rwanda and Bosnia and the Holocaust, the first genocide of the twentieth century occurred in Turkish Armenia in 1915. The essays in this collection examine how Americans learned of this catastrophe and tried to help its victims. Knowledge and compassion, however, were not enough to stop the killings, and a terrible precedent was born in 1915. The Armenian genocide has haunted the U.S. and other Western countries throughout the twentieth century...

" I have not been in a battle; not near one, nor heard one from afar, nor seen the aftermath. I have questioned people who have been in battle - my father and father-in-law among them; have walked over battlefields, here in England, in Belgium, in France and in America; have often turned up small relics of the fighting - a slab of German 5.9 howitzer shell on the roadside by Polygon Wood at Ypres, a rusted anti-tank projectile in the orchard hedge at Gavrus in Normandy, left there in June 1944 by some highlander of the 2nd Argyll and Sutherlands; and have sometimes brought my more portable finds home with me (a Minie bullet from Shiloh and a shrapnel ball from Hill 60 lie among the cotton-reels in a painted papier-mache box on my drawing-room mantelpiece). I have read about battles, of course, have talked about battles, have been lectured about battles and, in the last four or five years, have watched battles in progress, or apparently in progress, on the television screen. I have seen a good deal of other, earlier battles of this century on newsreel, some of them convincingly authentic, as well as much dramatized feature film and countless static images of battle: photographs and paintings and sculpture of a varying degree of realism. But I have never been in a battle. And I grow increasingly convinced that I have very little idea of what a battle can be like..."

Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed
Publisher: Penguin | ISBN: 0143036556 | edition 2005 | PDF | 592 pages | 2,50 mb
Jared Diamond's Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed is the glass-half-empty follow-up to his Pulitzer Prize-winning Guns, Germs, and Steel. While Guns, Germs, and Steel explained the geographic and environmental reasons why some human populations have flourished, Collapse uses the same factors to examine why ancient societies, including the Anasazi of the American Southwest and the Viking colonies of Greenland, as well as modern ones such as Rwanda, have fallen apart. Not every collapse has an environmental origin, but an eco-meltdown is often the main catalyst, he argues, particularly when combined with society's response to (or disregard for) the coming disaster. Still, right from the outset of Collapse, the author makes clear that this is not a mere environmentalist's diatribe. He begins by setting the book's main question in the small communities of present-day Montana as they face a decline in living standards and a depletion of natural resources. Once-vital mines now leak toxins into the soil, while prion diseases infect some deer and elk and older hydroelectric dams have become decrepit. On all these issues, and particularly with the hot-button topic of logging and wildfires, Diamond writes with equanimity.

Jewish Literature in New Testament Times
Publisher: Vintage | ISBN: NA | edition 2007 | PDF | 82 pages | 1,14 mb
There was no nation in all of antiquity who had been so immersed in their national writings as the Jews were in their law. Not even the Greeks in the zenith of the Periclean Age could come close. Some may have possessed a larger amount of text with vast literature, but the Jews were in love with their book and they were a people of that book. For the Jew, it was not merely a representation of a prized culture, but it was Torah… and Torah was, to him, the voice of almighty God. Its instruction was to be obeyed without question, and followed to the very letter. The moral law impacted every thought, the civil law influenced every judicial system within Judaism, and the ceremonial law affected every lifestyle from the home to the Temple.

Fascism and Genocide in Inter-War Europe (Routledge Studies in Modern History)
Publisher: Routledge | ISBN: 041533960X | edition 2008 | PDF | 414 pages | 1,26 mb
Drawing on the latest research into the ideological dynamics of fascism, Aristotle A. Kallis’ fascinating new book is a major contribution to the understanding of the Holocaust, and the mass murder and genocide committed by Fascist regimes in the twentieth century.
Locating the Holocaust within an historical context , Kallis views the Nazi regime’s crimes against humanity as a specific product of the inter-war European climate of culture and politics. Refuting Daniel Goldhagen’s theory that the Holocaust came about because of a unique form of 'eliminationist' 'anti-semitism' in the German identity, Kallis asks crucial questions about the complex and problematic relationship between fascism, anti-semitism, race and inter-war eliminationism. For those studying the Holocaust, fascism or German history, Fascism and Genocide in Inter-War Europe will open eyes and minds to the theories of reasoning behind probably the most horrific event of the twentieth century.

High Priest of New Testament Times
Publisher: Vintage | ISBN: 0802837174 | edition 2007 | PDF | 53 pages | 1,30 mb
As in ancient times, the high priest was the head of the priesthood. After the time of Herod the Great the high priest was no longer the political leader of the people. However, he did remain president of the Sanhedrin. This function, and the fact that the high priest was always chosen from one of the leading aristocratic families in Jerusalem, meant that he still had some influence in the political sphere. As had been customary from Persian times, the high priest was nominated by the foreign power in control, in this period the Romans. The most well-known high priest in the time of Jesus was Joseph surnamed Caiaphas, who held this office from about 18 to 37 A.D.

Shahar uses the records of their inquisition as a basis for an examination of the Waldensian sect's attitude towards its women members, and their role within the sect, comparing their lives with women in the Catholic church and in other sects. She finds that in a persecuted voluntary group such as the Waldensians, gender was largely immaterial, subordinate to the fervent religious commitment of the members...

This is an interpretation of the Hsin Hsin Ming. The Hsin Hsin Ming (Shinjinmei in Japanese) is a verse attributed to the Third Chinese Chan (Zen) Patriarch Seng-ts’an (known as Sosan in Japan). Written in the 6th century, it is considered the first clear and comprehensive statement of Zen. The Hsin Hsin Ming has been much beloved by Zen practitioners for over a thousand years. It is still studied today in Western Zen circles. Its core is nonduality and I find it is as relevant today as it was then.

Publisher: Cambridge University Press | ISBN: 0521534844 | edition 2004 | PDF | 478 pages | 2,16 mb
'This is a most enjoyable book. The author's intentions are clearly set out in the preface where they state their aim to provide a general account of modern Chilean history and they have done so most successfully. The overriding tone of the book is one of immense affection and respect for Chile and its people, and there is an overwhelming sense that the authors enjoyed writing this book very much. Such sentiments are communicated to the wide range of readers to whom this book will appeal ... a rich history of Chilean political, economic and cultural life which is in no way diminished by being a 'basic narrative' rather than a complex interweaving of theory and empiricism which can frequently cloud an appreciation of history.' Historical GIS: Technologies, Methodologies, and Scholarship (Cambridge Studies in Historical Geography)
Publisher: Cambridge University Press | ISBN: 0521671701 | edition 2008 | PDF | 240 pages | 3,46 mb
Historical GIS is an emerging field that uses Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to research the geographies of the past. Ian Gregory and Paul Ell present the first study comprehensively to define this emerging field, exploring all aspects of using GIS in historical research. A GIS is a form of database in which every item of data is linked to a spatial location. This technology offers unparalleled opportunities to add insight and rejuvenate historical research through the ability to identify and use the geographical characteristics of data. Historical GIS introduces the basic concepts and tools underpinning GIS technology, describing and critically assessing the visualisation, analytical and e-science methodologies that it enables and examining key scholarship where GIS has been used to enhance research debates. The result is a clear agenda charting how GIS will develop as one of the most important approaches to scholarship in historical geography...

His sharp and elegant studies of such aspects of popular culture as striptease, wrestling, toys, tourist guides, etc., were produced at a time when most of the contributors to this volume were still at school. Criminality and Narrative in Eighteenth-Century England: Beyond the Law
Publisher: The Johns Hopkins University Press | ISBN: 0801866081 | edition 2001 | PDF | 296 pages | 1,07 mb
Stories of transgression--Gilgamesh, Prometheus, Oedipus, Eve -- may be integral to every culture's narrative imaginings of its own origins, but such stories assumed different meanings with the burgeoning interest in modern histories of crime and punishment in the later decades of the seventeenth century. In Criminality and Narrative in Eighteenth-Century England, Hal Gladfelder shows how the trial report, providence book, criminal biography, and gallows speech came into new commercial prominence and brought into focus what was most disturbing, and most exciting, about contemporary experience. These narratives of violence, theft, disruptive sexuality, and rebellion compelled their readers to sort through fragmentary or contested evidence, anticipating the openness to discordant meanings and discrepant points of view which characterizes the later fictions of Defoe and Fielding.

Confronting the Coffee Crisis explores small-scale farming, the political economy of the global coffee industry, and initiatives that claim to promote more sustainable rural development in coffee-producing communities. Contributors review the historical, political, economic, and agroecological processes within today's coffee industry and analyze the severely depressed export market that faces small-scale growers in Mexico and Central America.

Reassembling the Social: An Introduction to Actor-Network-Theory (Clarendon Lectures in Management Studies)
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA | ISBN: 0199256047 | edition 2005 | PDF | 312 pages | 1,2 mb
Reassembling the Social is a fundamental challenge from one of the world's leading social theorists to how we understand society and the 'social'. Bruno Latour's contention is that the word 'social' as used by Social Scientists has become laden with assumptions to the point where it has become a misnomer. When the adjective is applied to a phenomenon, it is used to indicate a stabilized state of affairs, a bundle of ties that in due course may be used to account for another phenomenon. Latour also finds the word used as if it described a type of material, in a comparable way to an adjective such as 'wooden' or 'steely'. Rather than simply indicating what is already assembled together, it is now used in a way that makes assumptions about the nature of what is assembled. It has become a word that designates two distinct things: a process of assembling: and a type of material, distinct from others.

June 23, 1777—Trois-Ilets, Martinico.
I am fourteen today and unmarried still. Without a dowry, what hope is there? Mother says the wind takes hope and dashes it into the sky, just as the big wind took our house, picked it up and dashed it, leaving nothing but debts in its place.
Oh, what a black mood has possessed me. Is not the celebration of one's birthday supposed to bring one joy? After dinner, after eating too many doughnut fritters with guava jelly, I took my leave and climbed up to my special place in the kapok tree. It was cool in the shade of the leaves. I could hear Grandmother Sannois and Mother arguing in the front parlor, the slaves chanting as they pushed the cane stalks through the rollers in the crushing hut, a chicken scratching in the honeysuckle bushes. I felt strange up there—peering out at my world, enveloped in gloom on my happy day...

Oxford University Press | 2005-11-10 | ISBN: 019926449X | 1018 pages | PDF | 5,7 MB
The Roman empire tends to be seen as a whole whereas the early middle ages tends to be seen as a collection of regional histories, roughly corresponding to the land-areas of modern nation states. As a result, early medieval history is much more fragmented, and there have been few convincing syntheses of socio-economic change in the post-Roman world since the 1930s. In recent decades, the rise of early medieval archaeology has also transformed our source-base...

This long awaited title is a natural successor to the author's successful volume on fighters. The design and development of the British bomber since World War II is covered in similar depth and again the emphasis is placed on the tender design competitions between projects from different companies. Extensive reference has been made to recently- declassified archives in national and industry collections, which allows many little known projects to be brought together within a full narrative of bomber development. The design backgrounds to the V-Bomber program, Canberra, Buccaneer, Avro 730, TSR.2, Harrier, Jaguar and Tornado are revealed in more detail than has probably ever been published, but attention is also given to anti-submarine types and stillborn programs such as the RAF's first requirement for a low level bomber and the AFVG. The book includes many previously unpublished illustrations plus specially commissioned renditions of might-have-been types in contemporary markings. Keith Woodcock's cover painting shows how the Avro 698 might have looked in service had it not been turned into the famous Vulcan.

Tony Buttler - British Secret Projects : Jet Fighters Since 1950
Midland | 2000 | ISBN: 1857800958 | 178 pages | PDF | 51.76 MB
A large number of fighter projects have been drawn by British companies over the last fifty years, but very few have turned into hardware, and very little has been published about these fascinating "might-have-beens." This book makes extensive use of previously unpublished, primary-source material-much recently declassified. It gives an insight into a secret world where the public has had little idea of what was going on, while at the same time presenting a coherent nationwide picture of fighter development and evolution. Particular emphasis is placed on tender design competitions and some of the events that led to certain aircraft either being canceled or produced. Some of the many and varied types included are the Hawker P.1103/P.1136/P.1121 series, and the Fairey "Delta III". The book includes many illustrations, plus specially commissioned renditions of "might-have-been" types in contemporary markings. For military history enthusiasts.

Church History in an Age of Uncertainty: Historiographical Patterns in the United States, 1906 - 1990
Publisher: Southern Illinois University Press | ISBN: 0809316218 | edition 1991 | CHM | 296 pages | 1,15 mb
Essential to Catholic, Protestant, and even secular scholars of American religious history this is the first historiographical analysis of the work of Henry K. Rowe, James H. Nichols, Leonard J. Trinterud, H. Shelton Smith, John T. McNeill, Herbert W. Schneider, Robert T. Handy, John T. Ellis, and Jaroslav Pelikan.
Aware that every generation rewrites history, Bowden bases his investigation of major twentieth-century church historians on two questions: Why are young historians dissatisfied with earlier treatments? What leads them to believe their version is better?...

Н. Непомнящий: Военные загадки Третьего рейха
Russian | ISBN: 5783811238 | 2002 | 462 Pages | PDF | 1,6 MB

Charles L. Scrivner, «TBM/TBF Avenger in Action - Aircraft No. 82»
Squadron/Signal Publications | ISBN: 0897471970 | 1987 | PDF | 50 pages | 8.1 MB
Only six TBF's actually entered front-line, combat service in time for the critical Battle of Midway on June 4, 1942. These planes, attached to VT-8, flew up to Midway Island itself three days before. Commanded by Lieutenant Langdon K. Fieberling, none of the TBF pilots had ever been in combat, and only a few had ever flown out of sight of land before. (Most of this squadron, the famed Torpedo Squadron Eight, flew the outmoded Douglas Devastators from the carrier Hornet.) But both new and old were nearly wiped out.
Lieutenant Fieberling's six TBFs reached the Japanese fleet at 7:10 AM, dropped to low altitude and bore on toward the carriers. Zeros swarmed around the vulnerable torpedo planes. Two TBFs were destroyed in the first attack, followed by three more. Realizing that he could not reach the carriers, Ensign Albert K. Earnest loosed his torpedo at a cruiser, then broke away with two Zeros after him. Earnest flew his shot-up TBF back to Midway, navigating "by guess and by God." Earnest's was the only TBF to return, with nothing but the trim tab for longitudinal control, with one wheel and the torpedo bay doors hanging open. Radioman 3rd Class Harrier H. Ferrier was injured and Seaman 1st Class Jay D. Manning, who was operating the .50 caliber machine gun turret, was killed during the attack.

Timon of Athens is a bitterly intriguing study of a fabulously rich man who wastes his wealth on his friends, and, when he is finally impoverished, learns to despise humanity with a hatred that drives him to his grave. The play's response to matters topical in Jacobean London sharpens its thrust as satire. Yet the setting in ancient Athens allows it to read as a timeless fable, deeply relevant to a modern society that sees itself as pursuing material prosperity to the point of self-destruction...

The Autobiography of Joseph Stalin: A Novel
Publisher: Da Capo Press | ISBN: 0306809974 | edition 2000 | HTML+PDF | 272 pages | 18 mb
Chilling and mesmerizing, Louries novel traces the Russian dictators life from childhood to the apex of his career, exploring the diabolical nuances of Stalins psychology. The USSR dictator narrates, in a grim and relentless voice, often referring to himself in the third person (Stalin needs peace for terror). His first words, Leon Trotsky is trying to kill me, reveal the fury and incipient dementia of his reaction to the news that his nemesis Trotsky, whom he has driven into exile in Mexico, is writing a biography of his former revolutionist comrade. Indignantly comparing Trotskys libelous biography to his own egotistical version, and ostensibly refuting Trotskys account, Stalin reveals the origins of his criminal mind and the extent to which he has indulged his murderous instincts. From the beatings he suffered at his fathers hands, Stalin learned the perverse power and effectiveness of psychological detachment and physical cruelty. From Darwin he ecstatically gleans that there is no God, therefore no judgment from above...

Hitler's Priestess: Savitri Devi, the Hindu-Aryan Myth, and Neo-Nazism
Publisher: NYU Press | ISBN: 0814731112 | edition 2000 | PDF | 280 pages | 1 mb
The whole terrible Nazi experience had many oddities, and this relatively unknown woman is one of them. Born in France in 1905 as Maximiani Portas, she became a strong admirer of Hitler in the 1920s, moved to India in 1932 because of its caste system, and took a Hindu name. After the war she traveled through a devastated Europe and was a vocal apologist of the Nazis, their horrific atrocities notwithstanding. Her early writings were republished by far-right-wing publishers, and she gained new fans in the 1970s as neo-Nazism spread. Devi died in 1982, but the author writes that her combination of Hindu religion and Nordic racial ideology became "a bridge between neo-Nazism and the New Age" movements. (For more on this subject, see also Goodrick-Clarke's The Occult Roots of Nazism: Secret Aryan Cults and Their Influence on Nazi Ideology, New York Univ., 1992). This work will be useful for understanding the ideological background of the neo-Nazis. Suitable, but not essential, for all academic and large public libraries...

Oxford University Press | 1988 | ISBN: 0195038630 | siPDF | 904 pages | 18.3 MB
Winner of the 1989 Pulitzer Prize for History
Filled with fresh interpretations and information, puncturing old myths and challenging new ones, Battle Cry of Freedom will unquestionably become the standard one-volume history of the Civil War.
James McPherson's fast-paced narrative fully integrates the political, social, and military events that crowded the two decades from the outbreak of one war in Mexico to the ending of another at Appomattox. Packed with drama and analytical insight, the book vividly recounts the momentous episodes that preceded the Civil War--the Dred Scott decision, the Lincoln-Douglas debates, John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry--and then moves into a masterful chronicle of the war itself--the battles, the strategic maneuvering on both sides, the politics, and the personalities. Particularly notable are McPherson's new views on such matters as the slavery expansion issue in the 1850s, the origins of the Republican Party, the causes of secession, internal dissent and anti-war opposition in the North and the South, and the reasons for the Union's victory.
This authoritative volume makes sense of that vast and confusing "second American Revolution" we call the Civil War, a war that transformed a nation and expanded our heritage of liberty.

Y.Gordon - Soviet/Russian Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
Midland | 2005 | ISBN: 1857801938 | 131 pages | PDF | 107.99 MB
Red Star vol.20
While Soviet combat aircraft have received extensive coverage, the many UAVs developed in the Soviet Union and, more recently, Russia remain unsung. Nevertheless, this is a subject deserving attention. The first Soviet UAV to find large-scale use was the La-17 developed by the Lavochkin OKB, a fighter maker of World War II fame; it came in both target drone and reconnaissance versions. The Tupolev OKB, best known for its heavy bombers and commercial aircraft, also had a line of UAVs of varying size. The first of these was the Tu-123 Yastreb which started life as a heavy cruise missile but evolved into a supersonic unmanned spyplane; the book also describes the Tu-141 Strizh (Swift), which again came in reconnaissance and target versions, the Tu-243 Reys (Flight) and the latest Tu-300 recce/strike UAV. The Yakovlev OKB's unmanned aircraft are also covered, including the Pchela (Bee) surveillance UAV which has seen operational use in the Chechen wars; mention is also made of UAVs and drones developed by such companies as Strela and the Moscow Aviation Institute. The book is richly illustrated with black-and-white and color photos, including until-now unpublished ones, and line drawings.

The Roman Imperial Army: Of the First and Second Centuries A.D.
Publisher: University of Oklahoma Press | ISBN: 0806130008 | edition 1998 | CHM | 343 pages | 4,61 mb
Webster's book is considered a leading source on the topic, and it should be noted that it is not for beginners. That said, it ought also be noted that it is not for the advanced student, either: those of us who have studied the Roman army in some detail will not find many new takes on the sources we have, except for a very interesting discussion of the Etruscan influence on Roman warfare, which I personally enjoyed a lot. As it stands, this book is a definite middle ground: excellent in its own right, but not adequately targeted to either audience. For a student of the Classics who has some background with Roman history this book will indeed be invaluable, but for graduate students and professionals it does not contribute anything radically new, no matter how elegant and stimulating as Webster's treatment may be.

The Age of Milton: An Encyclopedia of Major 17th-Century British and American Authors
Publisher: Greenwood Press | ISBN: 0313310084 | edition 2004 | PDF | 416 pages | 1,22 mb
This encyclopedia provides 79 entries detailing the works and lives of innovators of the intellectually fervent late Renaissance-early Enlightenment period. Authors is defined broadly to include composers and scientists as well as diarists, novelists, playwrights, poets, essayists, and philosophers. Though most are British or American, some European writers and artists "who significantly influenced British and American literary culture" are included. Alphabetical entries average three to five pages, with longer ones devoted to major figures like Thomas Hobbes, John Milton, and William Shakespeare. Each entry is consistently divided into "Biography," "Major Works and Themes," "Critical Reception" (including both contemporary and later reactions over the centuries), and "Bibliography." Most bibliographies are about half a page long and are subdivided into "Works by" and "Studies of" sections. Cross-references are included...

Encyclopedia of Twentieth-Century African History
Publisher: Routledge | ISBN: 0415234794 | edition 2002 | PDF | 656 pages | 3,71 mb
The focus of this dictionary-style work is the past century of African history, covering decades of tremendous change, including resistance to colonial rule and the reestablishment of African independence. Global forces that had an impact on the continent are also considered. An article, for example, on the cold war details the effect of the conflict between the U.S and USSR on Africa. Although the emphasis is clearly the twentieth century, entries place their topics in context: the long article on Christianity considers the churches established in Egypt in the first centuries after Christ as well as the nineteenth-century missionary movements before considering modern developments. Articles on Islam, Arabic language, and slavery are similarly contextual. The scope includes North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.

Polish Aces of World War 2 (Aircraft of the Aces 021)
Osprey Publishing | ISBN: 1855327260 | July 24, 1998 | PDF | 96 pages | 12.90 MB
Pilots of the Polish Air Force saw action from the first day of World War 2 until the final victory in Europe. Flying hopelessly outmoded P.11 fighters in defence of their country in September 1939, a handful of aviators inflicted serious losses on the Luftwaffe before being overwhelmed. The survivors escaped to then neutral Hungary and Romania, before being ordered to France by the new C-in-C of exiled Polish Armed Forces, General Sikorski. With the invasion of Western Europe in May 1940, the surviving pilots were once more thrust into desperate action in newly-formed Polish units.

Understanding Terrorist Innovation
Publisher: Routledge | ISBN: 0415423511 | edition 2007 | PDF | 204 pages | 1,13 mb
This book explores the innovations and advances in terrorist tactics and technologies to help fill the gap in the contemporary terrorism literature by developing an empirical theory of terrorist innovation. The key question concerns the global historical trends in terrorist innovation, as well as the critical factors responsible for the differences in practices among terrorist organizations. The first part of the book provides an overview of the tactics and technology used by terrorists in the last century and identifies the key trends for the future. The second part compares four differing terrorist organizations with the aim of identifying key factors in producing innovative tactics and weaponry. The volume provides a historical explanation of the trends in terrorist innovation and also has policy relevance, as the ability to identify signature characteristics of innovation-prone terrorist organizations is a critical element in predictive threat assessment. "Understanding Terrorist Innovation" will be of great interest to students of terrorism studies, security studies and political science in general.

Tony Judt, "Postwar: A History of Europe Since 1945"
Penguin Press | 2005 | ISBN: 1594200653 | siPDF | 896 pages | 18.5 MB
A magnificent history of postwar Europe, East and West, by arguably the subject's most esteemed historian.
Tony Judt's Postwar makes one lament the overuse of the word "groundbreaking." It is an unprecedented accomplishment: the first truly European history of contemporary Europe, from Lisbon to Leningrad, based on research in six languages, covering thirty-four countries across sixty years in a single integrated narrative, using a great deal of material from newly available sources. Tony Judt has drawn on forty years of reading and writing about modern Europe to create a fully rounded, deep account of the continent's recent past. The book integrates international relations, domestic politics, ideas, social change, economic development, and culture--high and low--into a single grand narrative. Every country has its chance to play the lead, and although the big themes are superbly handled--including the cold war, the love/hate relationship with America, cultural and economic malaise and rebirth, and the myth and reality of unification--none of them is allowed to overshadow the rich pageant that is the whole. Vividly and clearly written for the general reader; witty, opinionated, and full of fresh and surprising stories and asides; visually rich and rewarding, with useful and provocative maps, photos, and cartoons throughout, Postwar is a movable feast for lovers of history and lovers of Europe alike.

Great American Lawyers: An Encyclopedia (2 Volumes)
Publisher: ABC-Clio | ISBN: 1576072029 | edition 2001 | PDF | 820 pages | 3,68 mb
Vile (political science, Middle Tennessee State Univ.) here offers lively profiles of 110 prominent trial lawyers, both living and dead. Contributed by political scientists, historians, and attorneys, the well-written profiles are three to nine pages in length and detail the upbringing of the attorneys, how they entered the law, and their significant cases. In addition, Vile adds colorful vignettes, as when Houston criminal attorney Percy Foreman is reported to have observed, "My fee is my client's punishment." The essays, which are accompanied by photographs, place the attorneys in historical context and offer suggestions for further reading. Sidebars describe less famous practitioners with the same flair. The book's appendixes list the lawyers by year of birth, nation or state of birth, law school, and place of practice and list questions about the lawyers' careers. Entertaining and informative, this work is recommended for public and academic libraries. Harry Charles, Attorney at Law, St. Louis...

War in the Hellenistic World: A Social and Cultural History
Publisher: Wiley-Blackwell | ISBN: 0631226079 | edition 2005 | PDF | 336 pages | 2,41 mb
In the 300 years between the conquest of Alexander the Great and the battle at Actium, continual warfare had a dramatic effect on Hellenistic society and culture. Exploiting the abundant primary sources available, this book examines the many different ways in which war shaped the Hellenistic world. The volume shows how war was intimately connected with economic, social and political life, looking at the connections between war and religion, the ideology of Hellenistic monarchy, the rule of elites, and technological change. At the same time, the book continually draws attention to the experience of war, both from the battlefield perspective of professional soldiers, and from that of its victims – non-combatants, women and children.

Jack the Ripper: An Encyclopedia
Publisher: ABC-Clio Inc | ISBN: 1576074145 | edition 2001 | PDF | 304 pages | 2,5 mb
Over 100 years ago, a serial killer murdered a number of prostitutes in the East End of London. He was the first serial killer to terrorize a large city—at a time when literacy was rising and the power of the newspaper press was enormous. “Jack the Ripper” was the popular name that originated from letters sent to the press by somebody purporting to be the killer.
The gruesome murders immediately entered the popular consciousness, and interest in them remains high even today. Despite, or because of, the lack of agreement among scholars about many aspects of the murders (we do not even know how many victims he claimed), Jack the Ripper has spawned a vast number of books and films. But we are no closer to knowing his identity...

It was a move he never regretted, and the riveting experiences he chronicles in War Pilot provide ample reason why. From the first primitive Sikorsky and the sophisticated choppers of Vietnam to flying medevac choppers and saving countless soldiers from certain death in Korea, Kirkland’s firsthand accounts of pilots under fire provide a gripping portrait of not just one American hero, but the many courageous others with whom he flew. . . .

The 250 years covered by Silver, Trade, and War marked the era of commercial capitalism, that bridge between late medieval and modern times. Spain, peripheral to western Europe in 1500, produced American treasure in silver, which Spanish convoys bore from Portobelo and Veracruz on the Carribbean coast across the Atlantic to Spain in exchange for European goods shipped from Sevilla (later, Cadiz)...

Osprey Publishing | ISBN: 1855326965 | June 5, 1998 | PDF | 96 pages | 60.41 MB
When the Luftwaffe entered the war, its nightfighter force was virtually non-existent thanks to its leader, Reichmarschall Hermann Göring, boasting that bombs would never fall on Germany. By mide-1940 his folly was evident; the first nightfighter wing was hastily formed with Bf 110s. As arguably the most consistently effective arm of the wartime Luftwaffe, the Nachtjagd took a steady toll of Allied aircraft - the vast majority of them RAF bombers - throughout most of World War 2. Fighting a tough enemy, as well as a lower priority in aircraft and personnel procurement than it merited, the force never shrank from its task.

Aztec Deities - e-Artbook
Publisher: The Count of Fate & Convergence | ISBN: 188284777 | edition 2002 | PDF | 41 pages | 2,07 mb
Why did I do the Aztec Deities Series when obviously I could never present a true appreciation of the majesty of this time in history? I didn’t research the mythology on the God Tonatiuh, which translates as “He Who Makes the Day” and use this as a basis for the painting. I let my imagination take hold and this guided me to represent the gods.

Robert Stern, «SB2C Helldiver in action - Aircraft No. 54»
Squadron/Signal Publications | ISBN: 0897471288 | 1982 | PDF | 50 pages | 12.4 MB
The Helldiver was developed to replace the Douglas SBD Dauntless; it was a much larger aircraft able to operate from the latest aircraft carriers of the time and carry a considerable array of armament and featured an internal bomb bay that reduced drag when carrying heavy ordnance. Saddled with demanding requirements set forth by both the U.S. Marines and United States Army Air Forces, the manufacturer incorporated features of a "multi-role" aircraft into the design.

R. S. G. Mackay, «Lancaster in Action - Aircraft No. 52»
Squadron/Signal Publications | ISBN: 089747130X | 1982 | PDF | 50 pages | 10.4 MB
In 1936 the Air Ministry published specifications calling for a twin-engine bomber to be powered by Rolls Royce engines. A. V. Roe & Company took up the challenge.
In 1940 the Avro Lancaster came from the development of the Avro Manchester, powered by two Rolls Royce Vulture Engines. The Manchester's engines were not sufficient enough and were underpowered and were replaced the two Vulture engines with four with Merlin engines. Roy Chadwick, the designer, then tested this magnificent plane which was renamed the Lancaster. It was great to handle and could reach high speeds depending on how much bomb load it carried. It could carry heavy bomb loads over high distances. Its maximum speed was 287 mph (462 km) and had a range of 1,660 miles (2,670 km).
