Brendan January, "The Iranian Revolution (Pivotal Moments in History)"
Publisher: Twenty-First Century Books (CT) | 2007 | ISBN 0822575213 | PDF | 164 pages | 10.7 MB
In the Middle Eastern nation of Iran, discontent simmered for decades. The Iranian people despised their leader, Reza Shah, who catered to foreign businesses while ruling Iran as a dictator. In 1979 discontent boiled up into all-out revolution. Led by the charismatic Ayatollah Khomeini, the Iranian people seized control and created a new government based on the Islamic religion. The Iranian Revolution quickly became a showdown between the ideas and values of Islam and those of the West--particularly the United States. The most dramatic event in this showdown occurred in late 1979, when Iranian students captured a group of U.S. Embassy staff, holding them hostage for more than a year. During the following decades, the revolution recast the face of the Middle East: it set in motion a movement of Islamic fundamentalism--a movement that has taken center stage in world events in the twenty-first century. The Iranian Revolution is an ongoing story. However the story ends, the revolution is surely one of world history's most pivotal moments.

Jodi Campbell, "Monarchy, Political Culture And Drama in Seventeenth-century Madrid: Theater of Negotiation"
Publisher: Ashgate Publishing | 2006 | ISBN 0754654184 | PDF | 182 pages | 10.2 MB
In early modern Spain, theater reached the height of its popularity during the same decades in which Spanish monarchs were striving to consolidate their power. Jodi Campbell uses the dramatic production of seventeenth-century Madrid to understand how ordinary Spaniards perceived the political developments of this period. Through a study of thirty-three plays by four of the most popular playwrights of Madrid (Pedro Caldern de la Barca, Francisco de Rojas Zorrilla, Juan de Matos Fragoso, and Juan Bautista Diamante), Campbell analyzes portrayals of kingship during what is traditionally considered to be the age of absolutism and highlights the differences between the image of kingship cultivated by the monarchy and that presented on Spanish stages. A surprising number of plays performed and published in Madrid in the seventeenth century, Campbell shows, featured themes about kingship: debates over the qualities that make a good king, tests of a king's abilities, and stories about the conflicts that could arise between the personal interests of a king and the best interest of his subjects. Rather than supporting the absolutist and centralizing policies of the monarchy, popular theater is shown here to favor the idea of reciprocal obligations between subjects and monarch. This study contributes new evidence to the trend of recent scholarship that revises our views of early modern Spanish absolutism, arguing for the significance of the perspectives of ordinary people to the realm of politics.

Marjaana Niemi, "Public Health and Municipal Policy Making (Historical Urban Studies)"
Publisher: Ashgate Publishing | 2007 | ISBN 0754603342 | PDF | 243 pages | 11.7 MB
The power which medical knowledge has had in legitimising the rhetoric that surrounds municipal policy making is the focus of this study. Marjaana Niemi looks at two early twentieth-century public health campaigns concerned with infant welfare and the prevention of tuberculosis, which were aimed at improving health but which also served to regulate urban life and mediate social conflicts. Firstly, the book analyses the processes whereby different political aims became embedded in these 'apolitical' health campaigns, and, secondly, the role which the campaigns played in urban politics and governance. The political aims which public health campaigns advanced are explored by comparing health policies in Britain and Sweden. British and Swedish public health officials were part of one public health community, enjoying close links, attending the same conferences and contributing to the same journals. The problems they dealt with were often similar and in both countries health authorities claimed scientific grounds for their programmes. Yet the policies they pursued were often strikingly different. Through examination of two different national approaches, the book gives justice to the full complexity of the policy-making process and illuminates the wide range of factors that affected municipal policies.

Ross Macmillan, "The Structure of the Life Course: Standardized? Individualized? Differentiated? (Advances in Life Course Research)"
Publisher: JAI Press | 2005 | ISBN 0762311932 | PDF | 381 pages | 11.3 MB
Current debates in life course studies increasingly reference theories of individualization, standardization, and differentiation in the structure of the life course. This volume brings together leading scholars from a variety of fields to assess the theoretical underpinnings, the empirical evidence, and the implications of existing arguments. The contributions include comparative-historical work, demographic analysis, and detailed survey research. The topics covered include historical, cross-cultural, and racioethnic variation in the transition to adulthood, the school-to-work transition, educational careers, retirement, activity characteristics over the life span and the life course context of psychological well-being. The various contributions expand our understanding of the contemporary life course and its implications. The authors offer innovative theoretical and methodological approaches that demonstrate the utility of holistic approaches to conceptualizing the life course and understanding its implications for modern society.

Steven V. Tracy, "The Lettering of an Athenian Mason (Hesperia Supplement vol 15)"
Publisher: American School of Classical Studies | 1975 | ISBN 0876615159 | PDF | 197 pages | 25.5 MB
This book combines two functions, as a technical handbook for training epigraphists to recognize an individual mason's hands, and a social study of a skilled artisan in Hellenistic Athens (referred to as "B"), a native of Salamis who worked in Athens and at Delphi. The methodology developed by the author to isolate 28 out of hundreds of inscriptions as the work of "B" represents a major step forward in the assigning of fragments to individual masons, previously a very impressionistic exercise.

Alistair Black;Dave Muddiman;Helen Plant, "The Early Information Society"
Publisher: Ashgate Pub Co | 2007 | ISBN 0754642798 | PDF | 303 pages | 10.3 MB
Whether termed the 'network society', the 'knowledge society' or the 'information society', it is widely accepted that a new age has dawned, unveiled by powerful computer and communication technologies. Yet for millenia humans have been recording knowledge and culture, engaging in the dissemination and preservation of information. In "The Early Information Society", the authors argue for an earlier incarnation of the information age, focusing upon the period 1900-1960. In support of this they examine the history and traditions in Britain of two separate but related information-rich occupations - information management and information science - repositioning their origins before the age of the computer and identifying the forces driving their early development. "The Early Information Society" offers an historical account which questions the novelty of the current information society. It will be essential reading for students, researchers and practitioners in the library and information science field, and for sociologists and historians interested in the information society.

Information Feudalism: Who Owns the Knowledge Economy?
Publisher: Earthscan Ltd | ISBN: 1853839175 | edition 2002 | PDF | 272 pages | 12 mb
Economic scholars Drahos and Braithwaite painstakingly trace the history of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), the international accord that has become a standard for resolving disputes over intellectual property rights, whether over bootleg videocassettes or unlicensed use of patented pharmaceutical processes. As corporations increasingly recognize copyrightable or patentable knowledge as a source of profit, they've exerted political influence to ensure that the financial reins stay within their hands. The authors clearly show how lobbyists from the entertainment industry, for example, use their clout with Washington to exert pressure on foreign markets so the U.S. industry can reap the most from films and compact discs. But these government-sanctioned "patent regimes" have resulted in an economic imbalance, which Drahos and Braithwaite depict as a "threat to liberty," where developing countries cannot afford access to medicine and technology without resorting to piracy. The authors carefully explain how copying software or making cheaper versions of patented drugs became equated with plunder on the high seas.

Barbara J. Shapiro, "A Culture of Fact: England, 1550-1720"
Publisher: Cornell University Press | 2000 | ISBN 0801436869 | PDF | 284 pages | 12.7 MB
Barbara J. Shapiro traces the surprising genesis of the "fact," a modern concept that, she convincingly demonstrates, originated not in natural science but in legal discourse. She follows the concept's evolution and diffusion across a variety of disciplines in early modern England, examining how the emerging "culture of fact" shaped the epistemological assumptions of each intellectual enterprise. Drawing on an astonishing breadth of research, Shapiro probes the fact's changing identity from an alleged human action to a proven natural or human happening. The crucial first step in this transition occurred in the sixteenth century when English common law established a definition of fact which relied on eyewitnesses and testimony. The concept widened to cover natural as well as human events as a result of developments in news reportage and travel writing. Only then, Shapiro discovers, did scientific philosophy adopt the category "fact." With Francis Bacon advocating more stringent criteria, the witness became a vital component in scientific observation and experimentation. Shapiro also recounts how England's preoccupation with the fact influenced historiography, religion, and literature--which saw the creation of a fact-oriented fictional genre, the novel.

T. Leslie Shear Jr., "Kallias of Sphettos and the Revolt of Athens in 286 B.C. (Hesperia Supplement vol 17)"
Publisher: American School of Classical Studies | 1978 | ISBN 0876615175 | PDF | 130 pages | 16.7 MB
The long honorary decree for Kallias of Sphettos, found in the excavations of the Athenian Agora in 1971, is here published for the first time, illustrated with general and detailed photographs, with a translation and line-by-line commentary. The author has further explored the wealth of information to be gathered from the inscription, which adds greatly to our understanding of Athenian history between the battle of Ipsos in 301 and the battle of Kouroupedion in 286 B.C., the ensuing peace with Demetrios, and the acquisition of foreign aid for the nationalist regime. These discussions are followed by an appendix giving the Greek texts of the literary and epigraphic testimonia, and a chronological table, which provides a historical summary at a glance for this troubled period.

Alan Atkinson, "The Europeans in Australia (Vol 1)"
Publisher: OUP Australia and New Zealand | 1998 | ISBN 0195507088 | PDF | 448 pages | 15.4 MB
Among the ancient stories told by people of the Australian north coast is one of the Shark that left its ocean home to make its mark on the shore. The ocean-borne power of the first Europeans in Australia, in and after 1788, had some of the savage mystery of the Ancestral Shark. In this major new multi-volume history of Australia, the award-winning historian Alan Atkinson explores the imagery and technique of European power as it made its first impact on Australia. He urges that the Europeans were not simply conquerors motivated by brutal or short term colonizing imperatives. Their own culture was ancient and infinitely complex, thickly woven with ideas about spirituality, authority, self and land, all of which influenced the development of Australia. Among the European's art and weapons none was more remarkable than writing: pens, paper, printing presses and books. The Shark which came ashore in 1788 enforced its will mainly through the written word. And yet poorer Europeans, like the Aborigines, were still a people largely unfamiliar with literacy in their daily lives. Theirs was an oral world - a world of speaking and listening. The possession of land, the conflict with the Aborignes, were at issue, but so were the ancient habits of Europeans themselves. This first volume tells how homes were made and souls reshaped during the first 25 years of the Europeans in Australia.

Авторский коллектив под ред. М.Д. Борисюка - Изделия, разработанные ХКБМ. Танки и Бронетранспортёры / Vehicles Developed by the KMDB. Battle Tanks and Armoured Personnel Carriers
ХКБМ | 2002 | ISBN: N/A | Russian / English | 80 pages | PDF | 7.68 MB
The Kharkiv Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau (KMDB) is a state-owned enterprise, which is now Ukraine's leading design authority for armoured fighting vehicles and used to play a key role in the development of armoured tracked vehicles in the former Soviet Union.

Sekigahara 1600: The Final Struggle For Power
Publisher: Osprey Publishing | ISBN: 1855323958 | edition 1995 | PDF | 103 pages | 43,1 mb
Sekigahara was the most decisive battle in Japanese history. Fought against the ritualised and colourful backdrop of Samurai life, it was the culmination of a long-standing power struggle between Tokugawa Ieyasu and Hashiba Hideyoshi, two of the most powerful men in Japan. Armies of the two sides met on the plain of Sekigahara on 21 October 1600, in thick fog and deep mud. By the end of the day 40,000 heads had been taken and Ieyasu was master of Japan. Within three years the Emperor would grant him the title he sought – Shogun. This title describes the campaign leading up to this great battle and examines Sekigahara, including the forces and personalities of the two major sides and that of the turncoat Kobayakawa Hideaki.
