Spatial neglect is a disorder of space-related behaviour. It is characterized by failure to explore the side of space contralateral to a brain lesion, or to react or respond to stimuli or subjects located on this side. Research on spatial neglect and related disorders has developed rapidly in recent years. These advances have been made as a result of neuropsychological studies of patients with brain damage, behavioural studies of animal models, as well as through functional neurophysiological experiments and functional neuroimaging. The Cognitive and Neural Bases of Spatial Neglect provides an overview of this wide-ranging field of scientific endeavour, providing a cohesive synthesis of the most recent observations and results. As well as being a fascinating clinical phenomenon, the study of spatial neglect helps us to understand normal mechanisms of directing and maintaining spatial attention and is relevant to the contemporary search for the cerebral correlates of conscious experience, voluntary action and the nature of personal identity itself. The book is divided into seven sections covering the anatomical and neurophysiological bases of the disorder, frameworks of neglect, perceptual and motor factors, the relation to attention, the cognitive processes involved, and strategies for rehabilitation. Chapters have been written by a team of the leading international experts in this field. This will be essential reading for neuropsychologists, neurologists, neurophysiologists, cognitive neuroscientists and psychologists.

This Is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession [Audio Book ]

This Is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession
By Daniel J. Levitin
Publisher: Penguin Audio
Number Of Pages: 1
Publication Date: 2007-08-16

In this groundbreaking union of art and science, rocker-turned-neuroscientist Daniel J. Levitin explores the connection between music—its performance, its composition, how we listen to it, why we enjoy it—and the human brain. Drawing on the latest research and on musical examples ranging from Mozart to Duke Ellington to Van Halen, Levitin reveals:
• How composers produce some of the most pleasurable effects of listening to music by exploiting the way our brains make sense of the world
• Why we are so emotionally attached to the music we listened to as teenagers, whether it was Fleetwood Mac, U2, or Dr. Dre
• That practice, rather than talent, is the driving force behind musical expertise
• How those insidious little jingles (called earworms) get stuck in our heads
And, taking on prominent thinkers who argue that music is nothing more than an evolutionary accident, Levitin argues that music is fundamental to our species, perhaps even more so than language. This Is Your Brain on Music is an unprecedented, eye-opening investigation into an obsession at the heart of human nature.
Summary: Brilliant and Inspiring

Brilliant and inspiring. It gives a great understanding of music and how we perceive it. It is written in a very accessible language for those of us music enthusiasts with no knowledge of neuroscience.

This book is so highly reviewed I doubt the utility of typing one of my own but here goes.
I think Andrew Palmer (see his review, 1-star) said it best in one thought. He “found it to read like an extended Wikipedia entry”. The errors and glosses in Levitin’s book are too numerous for me to list here - read the 1-star entries and no doubt most of them can be had, if you really must know without reading the book yourself. For my own review of the book condensed into a single thought - it seems to me that the only research Dr. Levitin did for this book was to look back through his extensive personal experience and jot down his thoughts in some semblance of order. Ironically the truth of this critique is printed right on the back cover of the book: “Dr. Levitin is an unusually deft interpreter full of striking scientific trivia”. Put emphasis on the word trivia, maybe a dig for so much name-dropping and then you’ll have the heart of this book.
Since I am taking the time for a review I will discuss three classes of faults not specifically mentioned in the other reviews I read. The three classes are -> Editing Errors, Goofy Statements & Logical Errors.
On page 15 Dr. Levitin says, “Pitch is a purely psychological construct…”. Then on page 29, “Pitch is so important that the brain represents it directly…” and goes on to elaborate, “This direct mapping of pitch is so important, it bears repeating… if I put electrodes in your auditory cortex and play a pure tone in your ears at 440 Hz, there are neurons in your auditory cortex that will fire at precisely that frequency, causing the electrode to emit electrical activity at 440 Hz - for pitch, what goes into the ear comes out of the brain!” (exclamation in original) So is pitch a psychological construct or isn’t it? Clearly it’s not but then what was he talking about on page 15?
The book has its share of fatuous statements: On page 128, while discussing the synesthetic experience of babies, “Babies may see the number five as red, taste cheddar-cheeses in D-flat, and smell roses in triangles.” I’ll let that pass without direct comment - if it is not plainly silly to you my explanation will likely not reach you anyway.
On page 243, Dr. Levitin is hesitant to listen to music composed by the notorious anti-Semite Wagner, “I feel reluctant to give into the seduction of music created by so disturbed a mind and so dangerous (or impenetrably hard) a heart as his, for fear I might develop some of the same ugly thoughts”. Give me a break! Has it ever occurred to Dr. Levitin that Wagner’s music might have been the only sane part of his life? And besides, if mind control were really that easy we would all be Nazis already.
Dr. Levitin fails logic/coherency most obviously (and repeatedly) when promoting evolutionary adaptation in regards to music and/or to overturn Dr. Steven Pinker’s oft quoted assertion that `music is auditory cheesecake’.
On page 248, he defines evolutionary spandrels by example: “Birds evolved feathers to keep warm, but they coopted the feathers for another purpose - flying. This [meaning feathers] is a spandrel. Many spandrels are put to such good use it is hard to know after the fact whether they were adaptations or not”. For those not acquainted with evolutionary theory this might seem like a huh? criticism but my point is this: To say a spandrel is so well utilized that it has occluded its adaptive history is to admit that it is not a spandrel. Spandrels, by definition, show up as adaptive leftovers coopted into another use.
Dancing to music is a sign of sexual-fitness display for attracting mates and thus preferentially leaving progeny (page 253-4). Really? One would think that the fact that the man can’t hunt would be enough of a clue not to mate with him. or perhaps some dancers only get the girls who are too stupid to realize that they can’t hunt? That would explain allot of human history, right up to today! Hmmm. . . maybe Dr. Levitin is on to something?
Dr. David Huron (musicologist at Ohio state, page 265) also does not like Dr. Pinker’s “auditory cheesecake” argument. Cheesecake is not healthy and unhealthy things are non-adaptive in evolutionary terms. Dr. Levitin quotes Dr. Huron, `Heroin users tend to neglect their health and are known to have high mortality rates. Furthermore, heroin users make poor parents; they tend to neglect their offspring’.
Here we see the logical fallacy of False Analogy. Heroin use is not like music in the sense that Drs. Huron and Levitin think. You see, neither Dr. Huron nor Dr. Levitin have read Dr. Pinker’s criticism carefully enough to be able to counter it with logical consistency. Music, states Dr. Pinker, is a by-product of a very useful trait called language. Heroin, like music, is pleasurable in it’s own right but it suffers from not being able to piggy-back on something more useful and as such the unhealthy qualities of heroin use quickly consume the fun part. As a stand-alone pleasure heroin - like eating only cheesecake - will quickly kill you.
Aside from factual errors - alluded to here and mentioned ad nauseam in the other reviews - I found this book interesting and easy to read. And for the general public I think 3-stars is a good compromise. Especially since, if you look closely at the extensive bibliographic notes (on pages 277-306), you will find more than enough depth and details to set off in full pursuit of the science of music.
BTW - From what I can tell, his follow up book, The World in Six Songs, is trying to feed off the mojo created by this one. I think I will pass on the warmed over mojo.

Remember that the majority prefers mediocrity and that’s why a book like this becomes popular.
Summary: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Music & Your Brain
Rating: 3
and I mean EVERYTHING. The title pretty much says it all.
The book delves into studies done by the author and others on how the different aspects of music affect the various parts of the brain, and how the brain interprets the different qualities of music.
It is fairly complicated due to music’s many components - from rhythm to timbre - and musical terminology. But the good news is the reader does get enough information without getting trapped in the scientific data.
This would be much better as an audio book, due to the countless references to various songs and beats.
Summary: Can’t live without music
Rating: 5
This is a simple book on the basics of music. It is so much fun to read. Levitin has written it in a style that is easy to follow and he has written about what all of us experience in our lives at one time or another. I gifted a copy to my music teacher and I have one for myself. What an amazing book!
I got the copies brand new and in pristine condition being a paperback and all. As usual prompt delivery. Thanks Amazon.

Metabolic Syndrome and Psychiatric Illness: Interactions, Pathophysiology, Assessment & Treatment

Metabolic Syndrome and Psychiatric Illness: Interactions, Pathophysiology, Assessment & Treatment
By Scott D Mendelson
Publisher: Academic Press
Number Of Pages: 226
Publication Date: 2007-10-25
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0123742404
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780123742407
Binding: Paperback
Metabolic syndrome is a set of risk factors that includes: abdominal obesity, a decreased ability to process glucose (insulin resistance), dyslipidemia (unhealthy lipid levels), and hypertension. Patients who have this syndrome have been shown to be at an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease and/or type 2 diabetes. Metabolic syndrome is a common condition that goes by many names (dysmetabolic syndrome, syndrome X, insulin resistance syndrome, obesity syndrome, and Reaven’s syndrome).
This is the first book to fully explain the relationships between psychiatric illness, Metabolic Syndrome, diet, sleep, exercise, medications, and lifestyle choices. Metabolic Syndrome is a major risk factor in Major Depression, Alzheimer’s Disease, Sleep Disorders, Sexual Dysfunction, Fibromyalgia, and several other illnesses of psychiatric significance. Conversely, some psychiatric illnesses tend to predispose patients to Metabolic Syndrome. Of further interest is the fact that some of the medications used in the treatment of psychiatric illnesses have been found to cause or exacerbate Metabolic Syndrome.
The author here provides basic information about what genetic predispositions, medical conditions, and lifestyle choices make Metabolic Syndrome more likely to occur. Among the contributing factors that are discussed are genetics, habitual intake of high glycemic index carbohydrates, fructose, saturated fats, trans fatty acids, vitamins, micronutrients, obesity, smoking, and lack of exercise.
The author describes the actual mechanisms by which Metabolic Syndrome progresses and causes damage in the body, including the action of insulin and the pathophysiology of insulin resistance. Details are provided on what occurs in the liver, pancreas, muscle, fat cells, and immune system as Metabolic Syndrome progresses. New findings are presented on fat cells, including the fact that they are beginning to be considered as endocrine cells. There is a substantive discussion of leptin, which is one of the important adipocytokines. Also carbohydrate, ‘bad fats’, inflammation, oxidative damage, over-stimulation of the ‘fight or flight’ system, and high levels of the stress hormone cortisol can actually cause the manifestations of Metabolic Syndrome. These explanations set the stage for an explanation of the inter-relationships between Metabolic Syndrome, psychiatric illness, dementia and effects of not only diet and life choices, but also the effects of psychiatric medications.
Finally, there is an important and unique section on the relationship between Metabolic Syndrome and various psychiatric illnesses, and how they exacerbate each other. The significance of Metabolic Syndrome in Major Depression, Bipolar Affective Disorder, Schizophrenia, fibromyalgia and Polycystic Ovary Disease is vast and it is important to realise the effects of psychiatric medications on Metabolic Syndrome. The author discusses antidepressants, mood stabilizers and the new atypical antipsychotics. There are dramatic differences among medications in the way they affect Metabolic Syndrome and pharmaceutical companies will want to promote patient awareness with this book.
Unique features and benefits:
1. The book provides an understanding of Metabolic Syndrome which is a set of illnesses including, obesity, increased insulin levels, insulin resistance, Diabetes Mellitus, inflammation, cholesterol and how this syndrome is a major risk factor in depression, Alzheimer’s Disease, Sleep Disorders, Sexual Dysfunction, and other illnesses of psychiatric significance.
2. A specific emphasis will be detailed on the connection of Metabolic Syndrome with Psychiatric illnesses, such as Schizophrenia, Major Depression, Bipolar Affective Disorder, and Metabolic Syndrome and how they exacerbate each other
3. The actual mechanisms by which Metabolic Syndrome progresses and causes damage to the body.
4. The relationship between Major Depression, Heart Disease and Metabolic Syndrome.
5. The connection between sexual dysfunctions such as Erectile Dysfunction in men and fibromyalgia and Polycystic Ovarian Disease in women and Metabolic Syndrome will be discussed
6. A supplementary Primer will be included which discusses and critiques many current dietary supplements that are thought to be helpful for Metabolic Syndrome.
7. The roles of diet, genetics and supplements in managing Metabolic Syndrome will be discussed
8. The reader will develop an understanding of the onset and possible methods for managing and preventing the Syndrome
9. A conclusion on Metabolic Syndrome and what to do about it will be included.
Summary: Important info and remarkable insight
Rating: 5
There is increasing recognition of how significant metabolic syndrome is in the degradation of general human health, bringing a need for a solidly researched view of the topic.
So Scott Mendelson’s cogently written book is extremely timely. In language that is both erudite enough for professionals but clear enough for more general readers, he explores the roots of metabolic syndrome, its its causes and effects on the body and the up-to-now little explored area of metabolic syndrome’s effects on psychiatric illness. Dr. Mendelson’s book is an important contribution to the field, and just a plain good read.
Yeah, Scott is my brother, but that shouldn’t detract from my view that this book is a great one, an important addition to our knowledge of metabolic syndrome.

A practical primer on this rapidly growing field
Handbook of Neurofeedback is a comprehensive introduction to this rapidly growing field, offering practical information on the history of neurofeedback, theoretical concerns, and applications for a variety of disorders encountered by clinicians, including ADHD, depression, autism, aging, and traumatic brain injury. Using case studies and a minimum of technical language, the field’s pioneers and most experienced practitioners discuss emerging topics, general and specific treatment procedures, training approaches, and theories on the efficacy of neurofeedback.
Handbook of Neurofeedback includes historical notes and speculation of the future of neurofeedback from a neurotherapist who’s also an inventor/producer of neurofeedback equipment. There’s also a very detailed theory on neurofeedback, including speculation on how and why neurofeedback training results in the alleviation of symptoms in a wide range of disorders; a review of procedures, including the ROSHI approach and other means of modifying the EEG; and a look at emerging approaches, including coherence/phase training, inter-hemispheric training, and the combination of neurofeedback and computerized cognitive training.
Topics discussed in Handbook of Neurofeedback include:
implications of network models for neurofeedback
the transition from structural to functional models
client and therapist variables
treatment-specific variables
tomographic neurofeedback
applying audio-visual entrainment to neurofeedback
common patterns of coherence deviation
EEG patterns and the elderly
nutrition and cognitive health
ADHD definitions and treatment
attention disorders
autism disorders
the neurobiology of depression
QEEG-guided neurofeedback
and much more
Handbook of Neurofeedback is an essential professional resource for anyone practicing, or interested in practicing neurofeedback, including neurotherapists, neuropsychologists, professional counselors, neurologists, neuroscientists, clinical psychologists, and psychiatrists.
Summary: Handbook of Neuro feedback
Rating: 3
This is the only book I was able to find with a broad background of neurofeedback.
Yes it is interesting… but could have done with a few more things eg.
A list of practising Neuro feedback practitioners or organisations would have been useful. Otherwise readers don’t know who to contact.
A list of manufacturers of Neurofeedback equipment would have been useful. They are mentioned in the history… but that may or may not be sufficient to track them down.
The book comes across a little disjointed… which is probably the result of the collaboration with so many pHD’s… and the editor trying to put it together.
It would have been nice to compare or contrast the Neuro Electric Therapies (NET)… and compare them to Neuro feedback. Specifically Dr Meg Patterson (NET) and Dr Robert Beck (Biotuner).
The two therapies probably work together quite nicely… but there is no mention of such closely related complementary approaches.
It is really a shame that the book doesn’t include a contact e-mail for corrections, suggestions, etc…
The practical sections on treating things like autism and depression were quite interesting… as it is the practical applications that hod the greatest interest.
It wouild have been nice to extend this practical section to eating disorders, etc… as a few more examples would have been nice (that’s more of a request than a criticism).
It would be nice if this publication came out electronically… as the adoption and acceptance of neurofeedback requires people to be educated as to its usefulness: the book has priced itself out of the reach of the casual reader… and thus misses the opportunity to educate the average person.
The book seems to be mostly aimed at professionals with an interest in Neurofeedback… something that is not immediately obvious by reading it’s description.
This book has the potential to be even better.
I hope the editor will take the time to tweak the chapters in future editions… with an eye to adding a few more explanations so that more readers will understand.

In excess of 7 million people worldwide die of coronary heart disease each year. Only one-third of these heart attack victims recover completely. The remainder suffer the consequences of myocardial infarction and its ill fated remodeling process, resulting in chronic congestive heart failure. This malady alone is the leading cause of hospital admissions in the United States.
New breakthroughs in stem cell therapy and tissue engineering have promised to reverse this dismal outcome by cardiovascular repair. World authorities, including scientists and regulatory authorities, have joined in a collaborative effort to present for the reader the first collective review of stem cell therapy for the treatment of cardiovascular disease. These contributions in basic science, pre-clinical and clinical experience guided by the regulatory pathways, assure a rapid course of translational research and clinical trials.
The contents of this publication will become a prerequisite for those preparing to meet the challenges of this exciting and potentially rewarding field of stem cell research.

The Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity

The Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity
By George A. Bray
Publisher: Humana Press
Number Of Pages: 308
Publication Date: 2007-11-01
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1588298027
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781588298027
Binding: Hardcover
The Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity presents an up-to-date survey of the current scientific understanding of obesity and the metabolic syndrome, as well as an overview of the most significant changes to the field over the past 30 years. By first presenting a historical context for overweight, the book drives home the point that obesity is by no means simply a contemporary problem, and its continued existence means that we neither understand it, nor have developed effective therapies. The Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity is a comprehensive reference for the treatment of obesity in two parts. Part I, The Problem, examines the entire scope of the obesity epidemic, including epidemiology and history, costs of treatment, pathology, clinical types, age-related issues, and general health risks. Part II, The Solutions, describes several treatment options including diet, behavior modification, exercise, pharmacological treatment, and surgery. This volume is a thorough reference for obesity and the metabolic syndrome and offers an in-depth assessment of the problem and its myriad potential treatment options.

Traditionally, pathology residents have learned how to write autopsy reports by trial-and-error, with oral feedback from local mentors. Now, pathologists and pathologists in training throughout the English-speaking world have access to a manual that describes what should be in an autopsy report, how to organize the material, and what the purposes are. The book lists numerous bad habits to avoid, and offers examples of effective report construction. It covers not only how to describe diseases and injuries, but also how to formulate and write opinions. As a supplement, the book also contains recommendations on record retention schedules for medical examiners (not everything needs to be saved in perpetuity), and how to formulate opinions for death certificates. The book is aimed at pathologists in training, but will also be of benefit to seasoned pathologists who want to improve their reports.

Clinical Prediction Models: A Practical Approach to Development, Validation, and Updating (Statistics for Biology and Health)

Clinical Prediction Models: A Practical Approach to Development, Validation, and Updating (Statistics for Biology and Health)
By Ewout W. Steyerberg
Publisher: Springer
Number Of Pages: 500
Publication Date: 2008-10-20

ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780387772431
Binding: Hardcover
This book aims to provide insight and practical illustrations on how modern statistical concepts and regression methods can be applied in medical prediction problems, including diagnostic and prognostic outcomes. Many advances have been made in statistical approaches towards outcome prediction, but these innovations are insufficiently applied in medical research. Old-fashioned, data hungry methods are often used in data sets of limited size, validation of predictions is not done or only in a simplistic way, and updating of already available models is not considered. A sensible strategy is needed for model development, validation, and updating, such that prediction models can better support medical practice.
Clinical Prediction Models presents a practical checklist with seven steps that need to be considered for development of a valid prediction model. These include preliminary considerations such as dealing with missing values; coding of predictors; selection of main effects and interactions for a multivariable model; estimation of model parameters with shrinkage methods and incorporation of external data; evaluation of performance and clinical usefulness; internal validation; and presentation format. The steps are illustrated with many small case studies and R computer code, with data sets made available in the public domain [http://www.clinicalpredictionmodels.org/]. The book further focuses on generalizability of prediction models, including patterns of invalidity that may be encountered in new settings, approaches to modifying and extending a model, and comparisons of centers after case-mix adjustment by a prediction model.
The text is primarily intended for epidemiologists and applied biostatisticians. It can be used as a textbook for a graduate course on predictive modeling in diagnosis and prognosis. It is beneficial if readers are familiar with common statistical models in medicine: linear regression, logistic regression, and Cox regression. The book is practical in nature. But it also provides a philosophical perspective on data analysis in medicine that goes beyond predictive modeling. In this era of evidence-based medicine, randomized clinical trials are the basis for assessment of treatment efficacy. Prediction models are key to individualizing diagnostic and treatment decision-making.

In this unique issue, the content is devoted to the socioeconomics of healthcare. Healthcare economics provide the underpinning of urologic practice for today and tomorrow. All of our clinical endeavors are dependent on the economic realties of the twenty-first century. This issue elucidates some of the challenges that are facing patients, physicians, and society. There are two major sections, The Healthcare Landscape: The Big Picture and Urologic Practice: Current Issues and Future Prospects. In the first section, articles address the history and demographics of healthcare and following this, several authors provide different proposals for healthcare reform. These proposals are followed by more parochial urologic issues which include residency training, certification and recertification, urologic research, practice management, and the impact of medical malpractice.

Evidence Based Practice in School Mental Health (Oxford Workshop Series)

Though recent legislation embedded with the No Child Left Behind Act and the Individuals with Disabilities Improvement Act mandates the use of evidence in school-based practice to demonstrate positive outcomes for all students, school social workers - especially those long out of school - often lack the conceptual tools to locate, evaluate, and apply evidence in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of their work. The first of its kind tailored specifically to this audience, this SSAAA Workshop title guides school professionals in infusing research throughout their daily practice. It shows school service providers a pragmatic approach to informing every major practice decision with the appropriate research so that students receive the best possible services. This includes how to use research to make reliable and valid assessments, how to use research to choose the best intervention, and how to do research to evaluate progress. Raines goes beyond creating a catalog of interventions that will soon be outdated and provides school social workers with a detailed road map of the EBP process. Chapters detail the nuts and bolts of EBP, explaining how to ask a relevant, answerable question; where to search for evidence; how to appraise the literature and avoid the pitfalls of web based information; how to adapt and apply the evidence in a developmentally and culturally sensitive way; and how to evaluate the results. Detailed examples along the way, including sample spreadsheets practitioners can easily adapt to evaluate their students’ progress, bring accountability within reach for school professionals who struggle to find the time, resources, and support sufficient to apply the best evidence to their schools.
