ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1572309792

Presented in a large-size format for ease of photocopying and use, the book contains everything needed to implement the program, including numerous case examples and troubleshooting tips and over 40 reproducible session outlines, client handouts, and assessment tools.
Summary: A helpful book for both patients and professionals
Rating: 5
“You’ll just have to learn to live with it.” That’s what many patients hear when there is nothing else that can be medically done to alleviate their pain. But how is a patient supposed to learn to “live with it?” Where this statement leaves off, Dr. Thorn’s book begins. Dr. Thorn’s book illustrates how a therapist can help patients with pain to better cope with their suffering, and to go on to live fulfilling lives. This book is aptly named, for it truly does take the reader on a step-by-step journey through the therapeutic process.
Cognitive Therapy for Chronic Pain is not a comprehensive chronic pain workbook, nor was it intended to be. It does not cover such issues as medications for pain, nor does it cover breathing techniques for pain or insomnia control. Rather, it takes one critically important aspect of pain disorders, how patients come to think about their pain, and deals with the therapeutic process more thoroughly than any other book currently available.
Cognitive Therapy for Chronic Pain book is a monumental work on the topic of how pain and suffering are influenced, for better or for worse, by a patient’s belief system. Beyond this, this book does an extraordinary job of taking current scientific theory and research about the nature of pain, and distilling from that concrete advice for both clinicians and their patients. This book leaves the reader with the awareness that Dr. Thorn is a master at simplifying complex ideas, and explaining them in a way that even a discouraged patient can understand and benefit from.
Unlike some books, which are scientifically sound but which offer little that is clinically usable, Dr. Thorn’s book is eminently practical. Cognitive Therapy for Chronic Pain walks the reader through the types of the beliefs that influence pain, how to assess them, therapeutic strategies, and homework assignment for the patients. This book even takes the additional step of identifying aspects of these assignments that patients are likely to have difficulty with, and strategies for helping patients overcome these difficulties.
Cognitive Therapy for Chronic Pain is organized with sections on theoretical matters, assessment devices with their scoring keys, and therapeutic strategies with actual homework forms. Additionally, there are also sample dialogs illustrating how to present this information, and how the patient might respond.
Dr. Thorn’s approach is at the same time sympathetic to the plight of patients with pain, while still offering hope. While never judgmental, she still challenges patients to identify ineffective coping strategies, and to learn better ones. Most health psychologists will have a chronic pain workbook on their shelf. Cognitive Therapy for Chronic Pain is the next step beyond such a workbook, and will be an indispensable addition to even a senior pain professional’s library.
Although this book is written as a guide for clinicians who treat pain, this book can also be a useful self-help guide for a motivated patient with pain.

Product Description:
This popular text helps students and clinicians build essential skills common to all family interventions. The entire process of systemic therapy is richly illustrated with chapter-length case examples. Rather than advocating one best approach, the author shows that there are multiple ways of working, and provides reflection questions and exercises that encourage readers to develop their own clinical style.
Summary: Very helpful book.
Rating: 5
I am a new therapist practicing family therapy in a public agency. I found this book to be very useful and informative. The author uses the right mix of theory and practice to help you sort out what style or model of therapy works the best for you. As I read it I underlined a lot of parts that I will be referring back to as I continue my journey as a family therapist.

A valuable series drawing from the knowledge of physicians at the world-famous Mayo Clinic continues with a comprehensive resource on chronic pain control, discussing lifestyle changes that can ease the pain, presenting techniques for coping with it, and more. Original.
Summary: Cool Alternature Therapies
Rating: 5
You’d think the Mayo Clinic would be hardline Western medicine. But this book rocks. There are alternative treatments and everything.
Summary: Managing Pain Before It Manages You
Rating: 5
This is THE chronic pain management book according to my doctor, and I’m a believer. I lead a more active and productive life because of his work.
What you may not “like” about this book is the emphasis on the patient’s responsibility. Once a proper diagnosis is reached, the PATIENT must do things to get better.
* Stopping what is was that caused the pain to become chronic,
* Coping with overweight,
* Dealing with uncontrolled anger, depression.
* Using the mind to relax.
* Relieving stress (and the destructive hormones it releases) to loosen up the painful area.
* Getting more sleep. Setting attainable goals.
* Assessing one’s personal spiritual life (not religious, but spiritual — there’s a huge difference).
Among themselves, the Mayo Clinic pain specialitsts have different philosophies and treatments. All are covered evenly in this book.
Summary: A LAUNDRY LIST OF PAIN TREATMENTS BUT NO EVALUATION OF THEIR EFFECTIVENESS
Rating: 1
This book was really boring to read for me. It spent a lot of time trying to define what pain was and all, and then it went to this big list of alternative treatments - they just listed all the possible treatments, but they didn’t evaluate them further, they didn’t show how effective each treatment was, you were like supposed to guess one - try it and if it helped you great and if not then try another one. - then the whole premise is to block out the pain mentally, but the problem with pain is there is usually a reason, and just because you haven’t found the reason doesn’t mean there isn’t a problem. I like the idea of refusing to acknowledge it and let it dominate your life and conversation - giving it more power than it needs, but the book doesn’ do a good job dealing with that either. it just plain lacks significan’t detail. honestly all this book is - is an outline of their 16 day program. They don’t give any more details of the topics covered in the program, and this is just a summary of what they do. But what are you paying this money for the book for - the brochure of the program tells you as much as this book does, and in fact when I checked out the program they told me more information just at my 30 minute meeting with them than they covered in this whole book. The book was fairly worthless and not worth the money. The ideas are good, but there’s no information to back it up. If you want more you have to enroll in their program. The book is not worth the money. I wish they would have done a better job and given the book more details, but then if they did that you wouldn’t need to pay the big bucks to enroll in their program. I feel pretty ripped off that I bought this book but the laundry list was actually helpful because I could then research each pain treatment so even though I don’t think it’s a great book - it actually helped me some.
Summary: Too General and Extremely Topical
Rating: 1
This book reminds me of many magazine covers: it promises a lot more information than it delivers. There is very little of any specific help here. Worse, it sounds like it is written by someone who has no real idea what it is like to live with debilitating chronic pain. Run 5K??!! How about, I can’t walk around the block? There is no help offered for people with pain that is more than moderate in nature. Topics that should receive some real attention are skimmed over in a matter of a couple of pages or even a few paragraphs. I had expected better from a Mayo Clinic publication.
Summary: Dogeared My Copy
Rating: 5
As stated in the credits on the first page, this book provides “reliable, practical information on managing chronic pain.” What it doesn’t say is just how invaluable this book can be for all of us who have suffered. Until I read this book, I had not realized that I had been living with pain since before entering grade school - and this book gave me the insight and tools to face it and deal with it constructively. I bought it at the recommendation of one of my physical therapists to help with my recently diagnosed fibromyalgia, but found a wealth of information that has helped me recognize and acknowledge emotional and behavioral stages of pain that I have been cycling through, unrecognized, for decades. I had just written off my symptoms as part of being bipolar, as being something I just had to put up with. Through physical therapy and reading this book, I now see how I have become physically, emotionally, and behaviorally misaligned and crippled as the direct result of pain. This book, an easy read, almost every page post-it tagged, has drawn the interest of everyone I’ve shown it to or discussed it with. It explains chronic pain - how to understand it, recognize it, treat it, and manage it. It has chapters that include evaluations of standard and alternative therapies and their documented effectiveness or lack of, how to set goals, find the right doctor for your situation, deal with your emotions and behaviors, manage stress, get healthy through diet and exercise, how your pain affects those close to you, how to organize your day, and includes a personal planner, great additional resources, and more. REALLY packed with the latest tested research and developments in the area of chronic pain from one of the great medical clinics. I can’t rate this book highly enough. If you or someone you know is suffering in any way shape or form from any kind of chronic pain, this book is a lifesaver. Buy it, read it, pass it around, share it with your doctor.

Summary: Circumcision article
Rating: 1
Having recently assisted at the birth of my son and well informed in the most up-to-date research into the anatomy of the penis and the history and practice of circumcision in the U.S., I read with some surprise and no little chagrin the tendentious and rather uninformed presentation on the subject of circumcision. It is surprising that so little account is taken of penile anatomy or the rights of the subject (most often an infant) of this surgery. In the case of baby boys, no notice at all is taken of circumcision as the surgical removal of significant healthy genital tissue from healthy baby boys. A significant surgical procedure with no medical necessity…seems a bit odd to me. In any event, it certainly casts much doubt for me on the authority of the rest of the manual, which I surely hope stands on firmer scientific footing.
Summary: Excellent self-help and medical info large book
Rating: 5
I’ve read dozens of medical information books, this one is the best. 300 pages that cover most “conditions” with 1. Illustrations and information. 2. Self-Care 3. Medical care. I first saw it at my library and had to buy my own copy.

Mayo Clinic on High Blood Pressure

Number Of Pages: 180
Publication Date: 1999-03-15
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1893005011
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781893005013
Product Description:
The Mayo Clinic promotes lifestyle changes to reduce high blood pressure, helping readers make those changes by providing answers to questions on diet, exercise, and medication.
Summary: Well done introduction
Rating: 4
This book is a nice summary of the subject covering the technical background of high blood pressure as well as treatments-including diet and exercise and drug therapy. Although most of us have primary hypertension-caused by hereditary factors, some have secondary hypertension, ie as a symptom of underlying conditions. The book does name the two most common ones: renal artery stenosis (RAS), about 1/100 odds and pheochromocytoma, about 1/1000 odds. Those taking more than three meds to control high blood pressure should be evaluated for these conditions (though some say the odds are so low, the tests are not worth the cost).
Most useful is the obesity table and the relationship that to lose wt, your daily calorie intake should be no more than 10 times your weight in pounds or 22 times your weight in kilograms.
The book includes a well written overview of drug classes and how they are commonly used, which combinations are preferred. Nearly every commercial medication offered has clinical data showing that it saves lives under some circumstances. Those studies tend to encourage combinations of drugs-even more than does avoidance of unacceptable side effects. The drugs list seems current and up to date. But one should not rely on their brief summaries of side effects. Read your package inserts and research them on line to learn what side effects are potentially a problem with the drugs prescribed for you.
The book includes a few recipes and menus, but we seem to get into the same classical paradox. So much is written about healthy diet that its tough to weave a menu that truly sticks to the straight and narrow. We have the usual rabbit food-salads and veggies, served without salt or fat containing sauces blended with minor amounts of fish and chicken. They clearly do not believe in the low carb diet. And heavy fish eaters might want to worry about mercury.
Serious healthy eaters will want a more complete heart healthy cookbook, of which there are several.
This book is a nice introduction to the subject. It should help most patients who want to communicate better with their doctors and especially understand what it is they are trying to tell you. Index. List of resources and their web addresses.
Summary: great book for the average person with high blood pressure
Rating: 5
As an RN I have referred many patients to this as well as other books published by the Mayo Clinic. The material is well written, understandable and offers valuable infomation on many topics surrounding high blood pressure, diet, medications, exercise, as well as alternative therapies.
Summary: Wonderful Information
Rating: 5
I stopped smoking 8 months ago, and once I stopped I gained over 20lbs. I went to the doctor for several checks ups in a 2 month period, each time my pressure was taken. Each time it was a little high. I was diagnoised with Hypertension a mild case. In my book any case is enough….I was scared.
I wrote to my email book group (RAWSistaz) and one of the members sent me this book. I read this book in 2 hours. The book is 172 pages chock full o information.
Each Chapter has bold lettering for clarity. The subtopics listed within the Chapters are easy to locate if your just browsing.
This book is for someone who has the disease and for those wanting to know if they are at risk. The Mayo clinic gives tips and suggestions that you can use each day to help you manage your blood pressure.
Also included in this wonderful book is the following: Daily menus, 6 step fitness plan, Better way to shop and cook, plus much much more. One of the best things about this book aside from the information you don’t need a PHD to understand it nor do you need to know medical jargon.
Along with Slim Down Sister, both these books will help me to live healthier, happier and longer.

An Introduction of the Sociology of Health and Illness
By Kevin White
Publisher: Sage Publications Ltd
Number Of Pages: 196
Publication Date: 2002-06-15
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0761963995
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780761963998
Product Description:
The main purpose of this book is to demonstrate that disease is socially produced and distributed. Becoming sick and unhealthy is not the result of individual misfortune or an accident of nature. It is a consequence of the social, political and economic organization of society.
In developing this thesis, the book systematically introduces students to the major sociological explanations of the role and functions of medical explanations of disease. For example, Marxists focus on the way the organization of production produces sickness and disease. Parsonian sociology demonstrates how medicine acts to control deviance. Foucauldian sociology indicates how medicine constructs categories of `normal’ behaviour and acts to enforce them. While, for feminists, medical knowledge is permeated with thinly disguised patriarchal assumptions about the nature and appropriate social roles for women.
The book situates the student securely in the literature and provides a guide to the strengths and weaknesses of the major sociological approaches. It draws out the essential features of the major sociological contributions and elucidates how an appreciation of the dynamics of class, gender, ethnicity and the sociology of knowledge challenges medical power.
Comprehensive, reliable and written with the needs of undergraduates firmly in mind, the book will be of interest to students of Medical Sociology and Medicine.

Illustrated throughout with vivid examples from dramatherapy sessions, An Introduction to Dramatherapy shows how drama can be used in an intentional and directional way to achieve constructive change with individuals or groups. In particular, the book highlights the power of drama as a therapeutic medium because of its foundations in metaphor, power which can be harnessed through the use of techniques such as role play, enactment, story-telling and the use of puppets and masks.
The book provides a welcome overview for readers who are new to the field and an excellent starting point for further study. (20070905)

Asperger Syndrome
By Ami Klin, Fred R. Volkmar, Sara S. Sparrow
Publisher: The Guilford Press
Number Of Pages: 489
Publication Date: 2000-02-18
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1572305347
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781572305342
Product Description:
Usually diagnosed in childhood, Asperger syndrome is a lifelong social disorder that bears many similarities to high-functioning autism. Individuals with the disorder are characterized by a lack of empathy, little ability to form friendships, one-sided conversations, clumsy movements, and intense absorption in special interests. While Asperger syndrome has received increasing attention from researchers, clinicians, educators, and parents in recent years, numerous central questions about the disorder remain unanswered. This groundbreaking volume brings together preeminent scholars and practitioners to offer a definitive statement of what is currently known about Asperger syndrome and to highlight promising leads in research and clinical practice. Diagnostic and conceptual issues are explored in depth, and the disorder’s assessment, treatment, and neurobiology are thoroughly reviewed. The book examines the effects of Asperger syndrome on an individual’s social, communication, and behavioral development, and identifies the challenges that these individuals face at home, in school and the workplace, and in other settings. The volume concludes with several parent essays that exemplify the trials and tribulations–as well as the joys and the victories–of life with a child with Asperger syndrome.
Summary: For Academics.
Rating: 5
This books is more of a research overview than anthing else, with a variety of papers written from several perspectives. A particular disappointment to me was that, rather than getting essays from the many talented Aspies out there, they got some from their parents to close the book out. It is probably more useful to psychiatrists, Occupational Therapists, and the specialist working on a Ph.D. in Special Ed than any parent or newly diagnosed Aspie.
If you are a parent, and interested in getting into your child’s mind, I would suggest reading Liane Holliday Wilson (Aspergers) or Temple Grandin (HFA) or Steven Shore (Aspergers). Szatmari’s book is also decent, but is more of a professional’s attempts to get into our heads, rather than truly being a first hand account.
There is also a great deal of information, both academic and first-hand accounts, by people on the internet. Viewer beware, however. There is a great amount of nonsense about chelation treatments and other such things that have never been scientifically proven to improve your child’s behavior or social skills.
For the latter, I suggest a book called “Incorporating Social Skills in the Classroom”, and also a book on NLD whose name I can’t currently remember but that you can find in my recently reviewed list.
Summary: Very good reference on the topic.
Rating: 4
I agree with both reviewers already listed. This book is NOT for the casual reader and most family/ friends will find it difficult, distracting and frustrating. For the newcommer to the field there are better books out there. However this is the best I’ve seen for someone alreadh familiar with the disorder who wants a good review of the state of the art in 1999-2000. For the serious student however, one would want to augment the text with more up to date journal materials as new information is available. It would be great to see a new addition of this book released.
Summary: Excellent source of material for researchers
Rating: 5
The collection of papers in this volume are really top class. All the academic authors (there are a few snippets from parents) are very well published. The erudition shows in the breadth and depth of coverage. In such a rapidly hanginf field this is as near as you can come to frozen slice of current thinking. Unlike many anthologies, wherein authors expound on a particular niche obsession, the bulk of articles here offer broad overviews of work. The diagnosis and symptomatology debate is well presented in a series of papers opening the book. Leaving aside the technical academic ares, most paretns will find teh sections on langauge and interventions informative but downheartening. What come across is that adoelscents AS are so heterogenous as a group that even assessing theor conversational deficits is several dozen research projects in itself. The one area of the book that I personally was a little weak on recommendations related to interventions. The emphasis here was on methodological concerns and in fact often meta-methodological concerns. It is eqaully clear that many researchers regard the possibility of remission of AS has highly improbable - to be polite about it. Be that as it may, I reflected to myself a number of times during the course of reading the book (and being part of team looking into interventions), that if a fraction of the effort expended was applied to intervention research would be make better strides? It’s a moot point, but if we lose hope we better close down science.
Summary: This one is demanding!
Rating: 4
On the jacket, Sally J Rogers, Ph D states, “………..Adults with AS and parents of children with AS will find it a veritable encyclopedia………….”. I certainly agree with this statement, but would add some qualifying remarks. It is undoubtedly intended as a detailed text for scholars and specialists in Psychiatry and Psychology who are fully versed in scientific investigatory techniques, and lay readers including even many with good levels of general education, will find reading it a daunting task. However, dogged persistence may well be very rewarding. For those general readers who wish to gain some insight into what has become known as Asperger Syndrome, I would recommend that they first read less demanding texts in order to obtain some general grounding in the subject - such as ‘Asperger’s Syndrome’ by Dr Tony Attwood.

Product Description:
Therapeutic options for patients with myeloma have radically changed over the past ten years. Beginning with the advances in therapy resulting from the use of high dose therapy and autologous bone marrow or stem cell transplant, we have more than doubled the median survival for patients as a whole, and have now a wealth of different biology based treatment approaches for our patients in all disease stages. The purpose of this book is to update the various treatment options for patients with myeloma, as well as to focus on the emerging and speculative aspects of myeloma therapy. This will require review of basic mechanisms of disease as well as further discussions on how these mechanisms can best be targeted. While there will be text covering most areas of myeloma therapy, the prime focus of the book will be the novel agents currently in testing as well as potential future novel targets and agents.

The Neuropsychology Handbook, 3rd Edition edited by Arthur M. Horton Jr., Danny Wedding (Springer Publishing Company) In the last decade, the number of books, courses, training opportunities, and journals dealing with clinical neuropsychology has greatly increased. Demand for a complete reference in the field is growing as practitioners in private practice, the court system, and the medical field continue to make discoveries and advance our knowledge of the brain system and how it affects our everyday lives. In order to address this urgent need, Drs. Horton and Wedding have edited this Third Edition of the classic Neuropsychology Handbook
. In its pages are reviews of all the major areas in which clinical neuropsychologists work:
* the foundations of clinical neuropsychology
* brain structure and function
* neurological disorders
* psychiatric disorders
* diagnostic decision-making
* symptom validity testing
* neuroimaging
* behavioral change following traumatic brain injury
* disability determination
* rehabilitation planning, and more
Very specialized areas of practice such as clinical neuropsychology with children, clinical neurotoxicology, and neuropsychological assessment in criminal law cases also receive chapters.
Great enthusiasm among professional psychologists in independent practice for the specialization of clinical neuropsychology can be seen in a number of events. In the last decade, a number of books dealing with clinical neuropsychology have been published for the graduate and professional markets, departments of psychology are developing courses and providing training experiences, and new journals have been established. There are also increasing numbers of requests from attorneys and judges for neuropsychologists to interact in the clini¬cal setting by quantifying the nature and extent of cortical damage in cases of automobile or industrial accident or neurotoxin exposure.
Indeed, there is considerable evidence to support the opinion that clinical neuropsychology is rapidly expanding as a professional prac¬tice area across the nation. While managed care has reduced reimbursement for psychological services in the last decade, there has still been significant growth in the need for clinical neuropsychological services. A salient fact concerning clinical neuropsychology is that it is perhaps the prime example of an area of professional specialization that was developed by practitioners. While many clinical neuropsychologists engage in full-or part-time independent practice, there has been con¬siderable evolution of the traditional independent practitioner role.
In order to address the urgent need for an authoritative reference work for the rapidly growing field, The Neuropsychology Handbook, Third Edition, has been published. The Handbook reviews the major areas in which clinical neuropsychologists work. Specific areas covered include the foundations of clinical neuropsychology, such as the neuropsychological basis of mental abilities, diagnostic decision making, and symptom validity testing. Specific chapters include nemoimaging, behavioral change following traumatic brain injury, and rehabilitation planning. A remaining section includes very specialized areas of practice chapters on clinical neuropsychology with children, clinical neurotoxicology, and neuropsychological assessment in sports. A concluding chapter on the future of clinical neuropsychology completes the Handbook.
The Neuropsychology Handbook, Third Edition, is intended for clini¬cal neuropsychologists in practice and others who utilize neuropsy¬chological data in their decision making. Also, other professionals who enter the clinical arena and rely on neuropsychological opinions, such as psychiatrists, neurologists, clinical psychologists, school psychologists, social workers, counselors and special educators, as well as other health care and educational professionals, will find the Handbook of considerable value. The hope and expectation is that the Handbook will make an important contribution to clinical neuropsychology and will thereby meet the challenge of alleviating human misery and promoting positive adaptation by brain-injured children and adults.

Publisher: Lippincott Williams&Wilkins
Number Of Pages: 384
Publication Date: 2007-07-01
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0781795435
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780781795432
Product Description:
Lippincott’s Illustrated Reviews: Immunology is a brand-new addition to the internationally best-selling Lippincott’s Illustrated Reviews Series. This volume offers a highly visual presentation of essential immunology material, with all the popular features of the series: over 300 full-color annotated illustrations, an outline format, chapter summaries, review questions, and case studies that link basic science to real-life clinical situations. Lippincott’s Illustrated Reviews: Immunology can be used as a review text for a short immunology course, or paired with Lippincott’s Illustrated Reviews: Microbiology for a combined microbiology/immunology course.
Summary: Excellent and fun introduction to Immunology
Rating: 5
Though I have had a module on Immunology as a part of Biochemistry in medical school, my essential knowledge of Immunology had all but flown out the window when I picked up this book. It was an excellent re-introduction to the subject.
The text was simple and clear. I whizzed through the entire book in a week and was able to retain a vast number of important concepts because of the book’s amusing and colourful diagrams. The accompanying explanations were lucid and easy to understand. The book makes very few assumptions about the reader’s prior experience with Immunology. Jargon, when used, is amply explained and illustrated. Though its labeled a review, I used it as a textbook. It’s a nice starting point for someone with little or no exposure to Immunology.
Thus, I would highly recommend Lippincott’s Illustrated Review in Immunology
a) as an introductory/basic text.
b) to anyone looking for a fun but good introduction to Immunology
c) to clinicians who want an essential grasp of the subject but have very little time or energy.
d) as a starting point for generating interesting ideas in interdisciplinary research involving Immunology for researchers whose primary field of research is not Immunology.
Summary: Great review of the basics
Rating: 4
I am a trained / board-certified pediatrican, and like most doctors have found that residency and practice have distanced me from the basics. I’ve enjoyed reviewing these “1st year” texts to help provide a more solid foundation for my clinical practice. Great review, very nice illustrations, succinct.
Summary: Good immuno REVIEW (not a text)
Rating: 4
Well written and with concise diagrams. Does a nice job of covering the pertinent material without going into so much detail you lose the forest for the trees. I’d have given it 5 stars if there were a comprehensive test at the end, but even as-is I’d buy it again.

More than 60 illustrations, including 24 in full color.
Review
“This book is a highly useful reference for neuropsychologists and their students interested in imaging research. The contributors provide succinct and easily understood summaries of acquisition techniques, methods of analysis, and clinical applications of fMRI, PET, and other imaging modalities.”–Paul Malloy, PhD, Butler Hospital and Brown University Medical School “In the past two decades, there has been a revolution in the ability of investigators to observe alterations of physiological functions as well as neurotransmitters and the deposition of abnormal products in specific anatomic sites of the brain. Now these functional imaging techniques are beginning to influence the clinical practice of neurology and psychiatry. This excellent volume contains comprehensive reviews of these advances, written by many of the leaders in this field. For clinicians who deal with brain disorders and for clinical investigators, this book should be essential reading.”–Kenneth M. Heilman, MD, Department of Neurology, University of Florida College of Medicine “This is one of the first texts to focus on clinical applications of functioning neuroimaging, not just basic research. The book provides an excellent review of PET, fMRI, MEG, and EEG techniques, and highlights their potential for furthering the diagnosis and treatment of neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders. The contributors are leaders in their respective areas of study, and together they offer an up-to-date review and integration of this burgeoning field. The quality of writing and depth of coverage make this text an ideal selection for graduate courses in cognitive neuroscience and clinical neuropsychology.”–Erin D. Bigler, PhD, Department of Psychology, Brigham Young University
“The editors and contributors have done an exemplary job in balancing two elements critical to any book focused on functional neuroimaging in clinical conditions. First, the book maintains a superb balance of technical detail and simple explanation. Indeed, the work is among the best I have read that consistently provides sufficient detail to describe highly technical elements of imaging, without overburdening the reader through the process. An important application of this is that the book will appeal to a broad readership, including individuals with solid backgrounds in one or more aspects of the imaging methodologies reviewed in the book, but also to individuals with solid backgrounds in one or more aspects of the imaging methodologies with less defined experience in functional neuroimaging….Second, the editors and contributors effectively communicate multiple themes throughout the book, including the basic technical underpinnings of functional imaging, methodological applications and limits of these approaches, as well as the outcomes that have informed us about specific clinical conditions….A separate strength of this book in comparison to others that have been written on the topic to date is the focus on clinical populations….This an excellent book that reviews the basics of signal generation, key elements of methodology, and outcomes from research in clinical populations. The focus on clinical populations provides new information about brain organization and function, and this is a unique aspect compared to other available texts. Given these strengths, I anticipate that both research- and clinically oriented neuropsychologists will very much appreciate this book as an opportunity to ’see the brain action.’”–Journal of Clinical and Experimental Neuropsychology “An excellent single resource for the current status of clinical functional neuroimaging….It demonstrates the great potential of functional neuroimaging as well as the numerous challenges faced by this young field. It would be an ideal text for a speciality graduate seminar as well as a useful desk reference….After you finish the book, you will have a historical and current perspective on functional neuroimaging and may even appreciate the evolution in brain-behavior research we are currently experiencing….Has a sense of optimism and provides clear direction for future research. It seems to capture the mood and energy of a changing field. The careful reader will be abundantly rewarded for digesting this volume.”–Archives of Clinical Neuropsychology “This volume does double duty as an introduction to the currently used major functioning imaging tools, and their use in evaluating selected clinical populations….This is a useful introduction to its field, suitable for residents and graduate students.”–Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease
“This book, written and edited by nationally recognized cognitive neuroscientists, is an outstanding review of the literature of functional imaging in neuropsychiatric disorders and is a welcome contribution to the field….This is a scholarly work, with pertinent and recent citations of the scientific literature at the end of each chapter. The index is especially helpful in a book covering a variety of disorders. This is an excellent book summarizing the field of functional brain imaging in neuropsychiatric disorders. If you are interested in keeping abreast of the scientific revolution in cognitive neuroscience, then this book is required reading.”–Doody’s Review Service

I use expressive arts with my own clients and found this book to be a very powerful resource. Each expressive arts therapies are explained and there are examples of each modality through different therapist working with patients or clients of their own. Very well-written and organized. I have several expressive arts books and have to say that this book is very good to a beginner who needs understanding of expressive therapies and for advance therapist who may need a reminder or simply need a new idea. This book is informative…and even gives major evaluations and assessments! Everything is defined for clear and complete comprehension. Great for a class!
