Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: Basic Science and Clinical Practice

Publisher: Humana Press
Number Of Pages: 418
Publication Date: 2009-03-13

Product Description:

Post-traumatic stress disorder is a psychiatric illness that can occur in anyone who has experienced a life-threatening or violent event. The trauma can be due to war, terrorism, torture, natural disasters, violence, or rape. In PTSD the brain areas that are likely to be affected are the hippocampus (memory), amygdala (fear association), the prefrontal cortex (cognitive processing), and the ascending reticular activating system (arousal). The chemical of interest is norepinephrine, which is released during a stressful event and is part of the fight-or-flight response meant to mobilize the body to action. The objective of this title is to outline the neurobiology of post-traumatic stress disorder and provide treatment strategies for clinicians. The chapter material from this book has evolved from a seminar on PTSD held recently under the auspices of the VA Boston Healthcare System, Boston University Medical Center and Harvard Medical School. We propose a book that will focus on the epidemiology, neurobiology, MRI studies, animal models, arousal and sleep issues, clinical trials, and treatment strategies for clinicians. Treatment will cover such topics as guidelines for treating posttraumatic stress disorder, PTSD and the use of mental health services, cognitive intervention therapy, and large scale clinical trials in PTSD. This collection will be a vital source of information to clinicians and neuroscientists.

Organized to approach patient problems the way you do, this best-selling text guides you through the evaluation of neurologic symptoms, helps you select the most appropriate tests and interpret the findings, and assists you in effectively managing the underlying causes. Its practical approach makes it an ideal reference for clinical practice.

Review:

Good general neuro reference

This is a good general neurology reference text, much like Adams and Victor. However, it is much easier to read than that other book. It is best suited for neuro residents. Goetz is a movement disorder specialist from Rush med in Chicago. His CD-ROM is an added bonus, especially all the videos, however it had some bugs. I’m not sure if this book is as complete as Adams and Victor, but I think it is a far better buy than NICP. Highly recommended.

Review:

if you study?

if you study Neurology, i wish you can this book. this book help me many problem for Neurology… and can use CD-ROM title!

Review:

OK, but the accompanying CD needs improvement

I bought this with excitement- the CD companion was a good selling point. However, I was unable to figure out a way to do a text search of the CD to match a topic of interest. Despite the fact it was published in 1999, many of the chapters appear dated. A web site, like that in the competing volume Neurology in Clinical Practice, would be helpful.

Review:

Simply superb and a model of its kind!

An absolutely exemplary textbook of its kind. It is as good a text on this subject for those with a post-graduate interest in this subject as you will find. The style of the written text skillfully balances the need for clarity with detail. Similarly the layout of the text in terms of presenting symptoms, lesional localisation, as well as broader aetiological categories is also attractive. I had previously been a reader of Victor & Adams but this is vastly superior in almost every way (clarity, academic depth, readability, up-to-dateness). It is simply a pleasure to read. The fact that it comes with a CD-ROM helping to illustrate certain points is just icing on the cake. If only all textbooks were as good as this.

Review:

Average Book, OK for undergraduates.

Recently I had opportunity to go through this book. It is a good attempt to build up clinical correlationship. For postgraduate students of Internal medicine as well as of neurology, more details are needed. Quality of Videos in CD is average. One would be happier if full text is voiced (audio/sound)in CD. I think if these things are taken care of, next edition will be more useful.

Product Description:

This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date review of epidemiological and experimental (chamber) studies relating tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure to the induction and exacerbation of asthma in children and adults. Particular attention is given to separating out the roles of maternal smoking in pregnancy and post-natal ETS exposure on the induction of asthma. It is at a level equivalent to that in peer-reviewed academic publications. Previous reviews by the California EPA and by Strachan and Cook reach different views as to whether ETS exposure induces asthma or not. The book is aimed at clarifying the situation by more detailed and more up-to-date investigations.

Motivational Interviewing in Health Care: Helping Patients Change Behavior (Applications of Motivational Interviewin)
By Stephen Rollnick, William R. Miller, Christopher C. Butler

Publisher: The Guilford Press
Number Of Pages: 210
Publication Date: 2007-11-07
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1593856121
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781593856120

Product Description:

Much of health care today involves helping patients manage conditions whose outcomes can be greatly influenced by lifestyle or behavior change. Written specifically for health care professionals, this concise book presents powerful tools to enhance communication with patients and guide them in making choices to improve their health, from weight loss, exercise, and smoking cessation, to medication adherence and safer sex practices. Engaging dialogues and vignettes bring to life the core skills of motivational interviewing (MI) and show how to incorporate this brief evidence-based approach into any health care setting. Appendices include MI training resources and publications on specific medical conditions.

Summary: Great Book, makes a lot of sense
Rating: 5

I have really enjoyed this book. The foundation of the book encompasses two obvious principles that come together in a way that gives easy guidelines for assisting people with change. The first principle is that people who are not changing are stuck in ambiguity, where they are in a balancing act between reasons to change, and reasons to stay the same. The second principle is that people believe what they hear themselves say. So, if you approach a change by only giving the positive reasons that they should change (you should eat fewer simple carbohydrates because it will help your blood sugar stabilize), the person will voice back the balancing view point (but sugary stuff tastes really good!). Now that they have voiced the negative, the pull of not wanting to change has been stuck in their brain even more. This book gives definite strategies on how to get out of this cycle. It really has helped motivate some of my patients- and even my children on occasion! Buy the book to find out how!

Summary: Fast delivery and accurate description of book.
Rating: 4

The delivery was quick, nicely packaged and the book was in the condition it said it would be in…

Summary: Very helpful
Rating: 4

I enjoyed reading this book and learning about motivational interviewing. I was able to integrate some of the techniques into my weightloss counseling position. It is pretty magical when done right. I am going to take a class to further my skills which can best be done with practice and many more examples. However, I was still pleased with this book.

Summary: This Book Delivers The Goods Well
Rating: 5

Motivational Interviewing in Health Care By Rollnick, Miller and Butler

As an experienced neurologist (read ‘old’)I have spent decades and read many books about interviewing: neurological, psychiatric, difficult, challenging, etc., etc. In serial publications over 20 years or more, Dr. Miller and others have refined the process of how to converse to effectively motivate patients to do what (you think) they should do.

Doctors know that figuring out what a patient needs is only the beginning of the overall process. Selling the patient is important in medicine if optimum results are to be attained. This book is a communication guide. This book shows you how to convince the patient he needs and really wants to buy your product for his own good.

In an intelligent and logically organized fashion, this thin book (2-3 hours max to get through, but then more time later to restudy and refine technique) provides a matrix from which to work to induce your patient to internalize wanting and needing to do what he should do for optimal health. It shows physicians or counselors how to begin therapy after making a diagnosis and reinforces a teamlike approach where resistance or escapism can often show up.

If you recall the book The House of God, one of the first rules proferred was that the patient is always the one with the problem. This book guides the doctor to show the patient why he needs to take on his problem and be motivated to handle his part optimally for his own good.

As I improve my use of these straightforward techniques, I am considering jettisoning the ballpeen hammer I used to use for the same purpose. There is nothing earth shattering here. I have and likely we all have used these techniques at times, but this book puts it together as I suspect few of us have done as concisely independently.

I recommend this book strongly, and I would not buy any of the preceding ones (not that I have read them all, but it seems this book must be the denoument). This would be excellent reading in medical school and any time after. There is nothing this old dog likes better than learning and improving efficiency. Counseling is a big part of our job and one cannot help but improve technique and outcomes with these insights. My patients will fare better because I read this book and, well, what else is there?

Summary: Improving Communications in the Health Care encounter
Rating: 5

Most patients feel rushed and not heard in their encounters with health care providers. This clearly written “how to” book provides principles and examples of conversation that can improve the quality of communication around life style change between provider and patient. Listening rather than telling, and guiding rather than directing or preaching are difficult skills for health providers. Giving the patient “a voice and a choice” in making changes in their unhealthy behaviors is essential to successful outcomes. This practical guide to health behavior change has made a difference in my practice when patients give me permimssion to discuss their drinking, smoking, drug use, over eating, fitness and seat belt use with them.

Statistical Modeling for Biomedical Researchers: A Simple Introduction to the Analysis of Complex Data, 2nd Edition
by: William D. Dupont

Statistical Modeling for Biomedical Researchers: A Simple Introduction to the Analysis of Complex Data
By William D. Dupont

Publisher: Cambridge University Press
Number Of Pages: 542
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0521849527
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780521849524

Product Description:

For biomedical researchers, the new edition of this standard text guides readers in the selection and use of advanced statistical methods and the presentation of results to clinical colleagues. It assumes no knowledge of mathematics beyond high school level and is accessible to anyone with an introductory background in statistics. The Stata statistical software package is used to perform the analyses, in this edition employing the intuitive version 10.
Topics covered include linear, logistic and Poisson regression, survival analysis, fixed-effects analysis of variance, and repeated-measure analysis of variance. Restricted cubic splines are used to model non-linear relationships. Each method is introduced in its simplest form and then extended to cover more complex situations. An appendix will help the reader select the most appropriate statistical methods for their data. The text makes extensive use of real data sets available online through Vanderbilt University.

Summary: Good guide
Rating: 4

If you are working with Stata this book will be a good help to understand the basic concepts of the multivarite analysis.

Summary: Accessible Intermediate Text
Rating: 4

Dupont’s “Statistical Modeling for Biomedical Researchers” is an accessible, straightforward, easy-to-read text for students and/or researchers w/ some elementary background in biostatistics. As previous reviewers have indicated, this is largely a problem-based text, so for those of you who seek a detailed theoretical explanation of the tools presented therein, you may want to look elsewhere. A major advantage, however, is Dupont’s presentation of how to run the respective analyses using the statistical software package, Stata, although it should be noted that the syntax presented is for version 7 of Stata — not version 8. Parenthetically, all of the code — w/ the exception of the graphing commands — are essentially the same between versions. In short, this text is a good introduction to some of the techniques typically not discussed in an elementary biostatistics course, although the book is best characterized as an invaluable adjunct to more theoretical, comprehensive biostatistics textbooks.

Summary: Very useful during statistics class
Rating: 4

I used this book as the text for a biostatistics class that used STATA as the statistitical package. I found the organization, problems, and the STATA output the book provides, all very helpful. In addition, as I moved systematically through the book, the tips regarding using the STATA features were key to my learning many of the practical aspects of the STATA program.

Summary: Useful in conjuction with the manuals
Rating: 5

As a non-statistician with some stat background, I find Dupont book a delightful book. It is packed with interesting and useful information. It starts at t-test and ends with GEE models, covering Cox model with time covariates along the way. But as the author noted, the book assumes some statistical knowledge and access to STATA maual. One minor note: While the book introduction asserts that it only assumes “high school mathematics” knowldege, the high school the author attended must be very different than the one I went to.

Summary: Buy this book if you like problem based learning
Rating: 4

I have had the pleasure of using this book during a biostatistics level two course this year. The book is structured to assist in the course work in statistics using STATA. It is user friendly and gives mathematical explanations when appropriate but without losing the reader with too many equations. The book’s approach uses problem based learning along with explanatory text which I found essential in learning to navigate STATA along with learning and understanding logistic regression, poisson regression etc. The best aspect of the book is the STATA output to assist with the problem solving. The book is a very good choice as an interactive tool for understanding advanced statistics using STATA.

Product Description:

What marks the beginning of a terminal illness? Will I have to change my doctor when I go into a hospice? What kind of information will a hospice need when I contact them? How can children become involved when a patient is in the hospice program? Is hospice care different for people with HIV/AIDS than for people with cancer or other terminal conditions? Answers to these questions and more are provided by this helpful resource. Written in question-and-answer format, the book explains what hospice/palliative care is, describes the services offered to both patient and family, admission requirements, Medicare coverage, reimbursement issues, resources available to both patient and family, and how to locate hospices in different parts of the United States. Special sections are devoted to AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, Advance Directives, the physician’s role, and euthanasia. In addition to providing a resource to patients and their families, the basic knowledge will be helpful to nursing students, medical students and interns, and social workers working with terminally ill patients–in short, anyone seeking to help terminally ill patients and their families make informed decisions during a time of trauma and crisis.

Hippocrates Assailed

Hippocrates Assailed
By Gerhard Falk

Publisher: University Press of America
Number Of Pages: 400
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0761814337
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780761814337

Product Description:

Hippocrates Assailed discusses the numerous changes in the American Health Care Delivery System during the past twenty years. Gerhard Falk points out that the changes resulting from the vast technological improvements in medicine, surgery, nursing, and dentistry have increased the gap between patient expectations and the availability of health care. He explores the patients-rights movement, the role of government, and the financial issues in connection with the insurance industry. Falk focuses on the introduction of the Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) as an instrument of health care rationing to constrain the rising cost of medical care. He also addresses the failure of many HMOs to adequately protect and treat patients as they carefully manage profits and interfere with physician autonomy. Falk’s broad examination not only discusses modern medical institutions, but also deals with the place of exercise, hospitalization, psychiatric institutions, and the nursing home, in American society.

Summary: A vital review of the current state of our health delivery
Rating: 5

The book has been published. It is truly encyclopedic in its coverage of everything from medicine including medical education to surgery, nursing, pharmacy, psychotherapy, dentistry, execise and nutrition as well as hospitals, mental hospitals and nursing homes. Very important is a thoroughgoing analysis of the HMO and insurance company entrance into the lives of physicians and their patients. There is also a good deal of discussion of the role of government in health care. This is a must for everyone interested in this topic, whether professional, patient, medical student or political activist.
