Summary: Helpful resource

My 83-year-old father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s four years ago. He lives 900 miles away, and this has been a helpful guide for us to refer to across the miles. I bought each of us a copy. He’s not comfortable with the Internet, so it’s been nice to have something we can both look at. He doesn’t read much any more but eagerly consumed this book.
Summary: Parkinson’s Disease: A Complete Guide for Patients and Families
Rating: 5
Just what I needed! I had planned to read and pass along to my brothers. I learned so much from it, I’m going to get them their own copy.
Summary: Took Two Times
Rating: 3
It took two times for Amazon to get me the book I ordered in "LARGE PRINT". I’m not sure what the problem was. I ended up buying a used book. The book was in new condition. Just frustrating to receive wrong items.
Summary: Excellent Guide
Rating: 5
I have Parkinson’s, and this is the most comprehensive, up-to-date book on the subject I’ve seen. If you are buying one book on this topic, this is the book to get.
Summary: Must have
Rating: 5
If you have PD or care for someone or know someone with it you will find this book helpful in any of those situations. I learned many things from this book. Including that some things my husband, who has early onset PD, was going through that turned out were symptoms and not just random events. I thank those that wrote this for helping me care for him and being informed. Also, they section on young onset PD really helped because i was beginning to feel he had intermediate PD when really it was signs and symptoms from his Y.O.P.D. It lifted a heavy weight knowing he wasn’t that far into the disease (intermediate stage). I was able to rely many things to his nuerologist that he was experiencing based upon my reading so he can get better care. Thank you.

Product Description
Traditionally the International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Related disorders (ICPD) is reflected in publishing its proceedings. This is to (1) sum up the current knowledge in this particular spectrum disorder and (2) to remind clinicians and basic researchers on the development and progress made overtime with respect to etiology, pathology, genetics, endogenous vulnerability factors, models, drug treatment strategies, e.g. levodopa, neuroprotective drugs, new developments in neurotherapeutics, neurosurgery, plasticity of nerve cell structures and clinical issues (e.g. staging, early diagnosis, differential diagnostic aspects, clinico-pathological correlations, new scales etc.). All these topics that have been brought forward at the 16. ICPD congress 2005, Berlin, are now available in a subsumed version in supplementum 70 of Journal Neural Transmission. This book gives a comprehensive overview on current clinical and basic research issues related to Parkinson’s disease and its related disorders and is suitable for neurologists, psychiatrists, neurosurgeons, basic researchers, geneticists and patients as well as their relatives.

The History of Modern Epilepsy: The Beginning, 1865-1914 (Contributions in Medical Studies)

Product Description:
Although the history of epilepsy, one of the most common serious neurological disorders, can easily be traced back to ancient times, the modern understanding of the disease only began in the middle of the 19th century. This history of the first fifty years of modern epileptology reflects the thinking, accomplishments, and failures of physicians between 1865 and 1914. This epoch presented a very bleak clinical picture: diagnosis was difficult and often arbitrary; treatment was poor and, at times, worse than the disease; and patients, who were usually viewed as having a progressive dementing condition, were shunned by society.
Summary: The History of Epilepsy Can Be Exciting
Rating: 5
I never thought the history of epilepsy could be exciting….but Dr. Friedlander’s well-written book brings a dynamic essence to a mysterious and poorly understood disease. His research is painstaking and thorough, yet his verbage is far from dry and academic. He weaves a true story into a telling masterpiece of medical history. A must-read for any history buff who wants to understand how society views itself as it struggles to bring to light with one of humankind’s great mysteries, that of epilepsy.

Product Description:
Medical visits are often less effective and satisfying than they would be if doctors and patients better understood the communication most needed for attainment of mutual health goals. The verbal and nonverbal exchanges that take place between doctor and patient affect both participants, and can result in a range of positive or negative psychological reactions-including comfort, alarm, irritation, or resolve. "Talk," on both verbal and non-verbal levels, is shown by extensive research to have far-reaching impact. This updated edition of a widely popular book helps us understand this vital issue, and facilitate communications that will mean more effective medical care and happier, healthier consumers. Roter and Hall set out specific principles and recommendations for improving doctor-patient relationships. They describe the process of communication, analyze social and psychological factors that color doctor-patient exchanges, and detail changes that can benefit both parties. Here are needed encouragement and principles of action vital to doctors and patients alike. far-reaching impact.

Product Description:
Bioethics has paid surprisingly little attention to the special problems faced by women and to feminist analyses of current health care issues other than reproduction. Feminism & Bioethics: Beyond Reproduction aims to counterbalance this one-sided approach. A breakthrough volume of original essays authored by leading figures in bioethics and feminist theory, it moves beyond reproduction and nursing, taking bioethics into new territory. The book starts with an investigation of the relationship between feminism and bioethics and introduces different approaches to the problem. Chapters stress the importance of liberal feminism which prefers feminist over feminine analysis, integrate the experience of women of color, draw from the women’s self-help movement, and apply feminist standpoint theory. In the second part of the book, contributors view various bioethical problems from a feminist perspective: euthanasia, AIDS, the definition of health, doctor-patient communication, the Human Genome Project, the conduct of biomedical research, and health care reform. They examine the pros and cons of the application of gender and feminism to bioethics. This provocative volume is bound to change and broaden the way bioethicists, students, patients, and the public consider bioethical issues.

Comprehensive Handbook of Iodine: Nutritional, Biochemical, Pathological and Therapeutic Aspects
By Victor R. Preedy
Publisher: Academic Press
Number Of Pages: 1328
Publication Date: 2009-01-29
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0123741351
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780123741356
Product Description:
Over two billion people worldwide are at risk for the spectrum of disorders known as "The Iodine Deficiency Disorders." 1-10% will suffer cretinism; 5-30% will have some sort of brain damage or neurological impairment and 30-70% will be hypothyroid.
The causes of iodine deficiencies can be considered from both simplistic and more complex perspectives: From the leaching of iodine from soil resulting in crops with low iodine content to malnutrition resulting in impaired iodine absorption. Poor dietary diversification and impoverished socio-economic development can also lead to iodine deficiencies.
Although it is possible to diagnose and treat deficiencies, there is still an ongoing dialogue regarding the detailed molecular pathology of iodine homeostatis, how hypothyroidism impacts the body tissues, and efficient diagnosis and treatment of the Iodine Deficiency Disorders.
This Handbook provides a resource of information on the various pathways and processes based on different countries or diseases. Because there is a constant flow of new information on iodine and related disorders, the goal of this Handbook is to provide a base of scientific information upon which additional knowledge can be applied.
Key Features:
*Provides important information on one of the most common micro-nutrient deficiencies in the world, the most important "single nutrient-multiple consequences" paradigm today
*Includes information on iodine-related diseases, including those that are common, preventable and treatable
*Provides insight from a broad perspective of viewpoints — from subcellular transports to economic impact

How many times have you told a student to do a combination and not known what the result of their actions will be.How many off us know what dammage we can do.This book covers max to minimum dammage, in a well illusrated and easy to follow book.
Summary: Could have been a lot better!
Rating: 3
The subject of vital/vulnerable points and how to strike them is a very serious matter and one that should never be taken lightly. I personally am very leery about teaching people about them and usually only give a generalized description of them. There are two books that attempt to tackle this subject, both of which I currently have in my own personal library. One of them is Brian Adam’s, "Deadly Karate Blows."
Now before I get started on writing the actual review of this book, I am going to take this opportunity to give you a bit of insight into my reviewing process. I will rarely if ever give a bad review. This isn’t meant to imply that I think that everything is good, it’s just that if I don’t care for a particular book or DVD that I have, I simply will not do a review on it. What I primarily look for in an instructional book or DVD is its ability to teach me solid relevant information on the particular topic being addressed, which should be the primary focus of the material being presented. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case.
Now depending upon your own personal knowledge on the subject, and your own personal perspective, you will either love this book or revile it. While I myself readily question some of the material presented in this book, I do find a lot of it to be very informative in both a positive and a negative way. Rather than dwelling on the negative aspects, I will instead focus on the positive aspects of this book.
The basic format for this book starts out with two to three photographs with captions and two subjects demonstrating a particular technique whose attack is focused on a particular vital/vulnerable point. This is followed by some pretty good illustrations and really basic descriptions of the various possible injuries that can accompany a blow to the particular vital/vulnerable point being discussed. Each section starts out with the weapon used, the target (vital/vulnerable point) attacked, and the possible medical implications of an effective attack. The only real detractor to this is that it should be updated to provide more current and relevant information.
One could easily argue that a lot of the information provided is sketchy at best and not very detailed at all. This is a legitimate point. However, and this is just my opinion, I think the author was just trying to give the reader an overview of the subject, rather than a detailed analysis.
During the introduction to this book, the author is adamant about making it clear that, "…I have just barely scratched the surface of a subject that will continue to regain its status in the martial arts." The author also makes it very clear that, "One must remember that whenever the human element is involved, there is no such thing as absolute perfection. This is why in many of the sections it is indicated that there is more than one possible result, because the blow may be slightly off target or because of other existing conditions which might be hindered by unforeseen circumstances."
Although this book is definitely not an "authoritative" piece, it still holds value especially when combined with another book called, "Gray’s Anatomy."
Summary: Good reference
Rating: 4
You need to know more about what you’re doing if you seriously plan on using anything you learn down at the dojo in self-defense situations. It’s also good to know what isn’t true, such as the drive the nose into the brain from a well placed palm heel strick nonsense. This is a pretty good, concise, clearly written place to get that kind of information. I’m not an MD, so I can’t vouch for the absolute accuracy of all information contained in the book. The things I’ve learned from other sources are supported here. It’s a good read too.
Summary: Pathetic
Rating: 1
This doesn’t have much deadly karate but it certainly does blow…
What a huge disappointment! This premise holds much promise but the breadth and depth of this particular rendering is very shallow indeed. It’s only 117 pages and mostly pictures. The illustrations unfortunately are marginally well done and the photos have very bad contrast so between these two shortcomings the techniques are not well illuminated. Since the text is not very descriptive either, the total package is very incomplete for the few applications they actually cover. There are hundreds of traditional karate techniques that are not covered at all.
I have no idea why the practitioners in the photos have their shirts off. It is not helpful in showing what they are doing technique-wise. Neither model has much physique to speak of so I can’t imagine they’re trying to show off what great shape they are in. You’d think a book about karate would at least show folks wearing traditional karate uniforms yet only one of the two has gi-style pants (with no obi) while the other wears half a tracksuit. Both wear shoes. Since they are not really doing karate techniques in every case, I guess this is irrelevant but I do find it annoying.
As mentioned previoiusly, there are a huge number of techniques not discussed at all (such as locks or chokes along with several types of strikes). Furthermore, many that are discussed have significant errors. For example, when it comes to an eye strike the author shows fingertip rakes across and into the eye describing the effects as a collapsed "bulb of the eye" or a lacerated eyelid. That’s okay so far as it goes, I suppose, but a "torn eyelid from the effect of a sharp finger nail piercing an eyelid that has blinked at the last instant before it has struck" is sheer nonsense and not truly a medical implication. I don’t remember reading the term "bulb of the eye" in any medical textbooks either, come to think of it.
In real life, the most common eye attack is a rake. The second most common is a gouge. The gouge is almost never successfully performed with the fingers. Instead, it is performed with the thumb while the fingers contour the side of the head, which is why that version is the most common bunkai. It works best when the opponent’s head is supported against the ground, a wall, or with your other hand. When you do that the eyeball is displaced and popped out rather than collapsed or crushed. The book not only does not talk about displacements at all, but it also focuses on ruptures, something that is virtually impossible to do with an unsupported finger jab as shown in the text.
I really don’t know why the set-ups for the various techniques were chosen in the way they were. For example, the groin strike shows the defender caught in a two handed choke with the attacker’s thumbs pressing into his throat before the counterattack. Get real! You’ll never be "caught" in a two handed front choke. Unless you are completely oblivious no one is going to walk up and choke you, at least not upright when you are both standing. Perhaps you’d slap the attacker’s hands aside and react with a groin kick when he tries to choke you but that’s about it. I’ve witnessed, interceded in, stopped, or prevented more than 300 real-life fights and I’ve never seen anyone trying this silliness on the street let alone successfully applying it. Chokes require significant disruption before you can successfully apply them. Oh, and the author doesn’t even describe the medical implications of chokes either… lame, lame, lame. Speaking of lame, the eight pages on "principles of first aid and pain reduction" appear to be a last minute filler. I was expecting first aid for each technique shown but it is just some general first aid 101 stuff.
All in all I’m hugely disappointed in this book. This is a great topic and I’d really like to see someone with a medical degree do it well. The execution in this book, unfortunately, isn’t at all what I was looking for. It is a pathetic, misguided attempt to cover an important topic.
Don’t waste your money.
Lawrence Kane
Author of Surviving Armed Assaults and Martial Arts Instruction; co-author of The Way of Kata, and The Way to Black Belt
Summary: Not a how-to book, but very useful knowledge nonetheless
Rating: 4
Although the title says "…Karate…", this book can be used by anyone involved in any striking art. This is not a how-to book, instead it gives a brief description of a move (to make sure the reader understands what’s happening) with one or two photos, then goes on to describe what is the likely outcome to the person getting hit. It’s a good book because it reminds you (especially if you’re relatively inexperienced) that your moves can paralyze or kill, which the law may not agree with in the realm of self-defense. It is a good book and I do recommend.
Summary: Authentic
Rating: 5
The author went to great lengths to analyze the effects of common karate blows. This has implications for appreciating "soft" forms of self defense as compared with those forms most ameniable to full contact with protection gear. The book in effect documents the effects "soft" (low inertia) blows can have on vital points. The forward to the book is well written also by a professional educator, enthusiast, and instructor (Chris Town.)

Chesley’s Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy, Third Edition
By Marshall D. Lindheimer MD FACP
Publisher: Academic Press
Number Of Pages: 450
Publication Date: 2009-05-15
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0123742137
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780123742131
Product Description:
Hypertensive disorders remain one the major causes of maternal and fetal morbidity and death. It is also a leading cause of preterm birth now known to be a risk factor in remote cardiovascular disease. Despite this the hypertensive disorders remain marginally studied and management is often controversial. Chesley’s Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy, remains one of the beacons to guide this field, recognized for its uniqueness and utility. The Third Edition continues this tradition, focusing on prediction, prevention, and management for clinicians, and is an essential reference text for clinical and basic investigators alike. Differing from other texts devoted to preeclampsia, it covers the whole gamut of high blood pressure, and not just preeclampsia.
NEW TO THE THIRD EDITION:
* New chapters focusing on recent discoveries in angiogenesis, auto-antibodies and other recent immunological findings, imaging in eclampsa, animal models - where considerable progress has emerged since the previous edition
* Extensive updates to chapters on epidemiology, etiological considerations, pathophysiology, prediction, prevention, and management
* Systematic reviews and metanalysis of trials regarding prediction and antihypertensive treatment
* Discussions on the emerging roles of metabolic syndrome and obesity and the increasing incidence of preeclampsia
* Epodemiological coverage of preeclampsia as a risk factor for future metabolic and cardiovascular disease that permits early intervention and life style changes
Summary: An outstanding reference book
Rating: 4
Chesley’s Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy is the seminal textbook on the subject. It is really strong on the epidemiology of the hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. It is a little weak on the basic science side, with chapters written by investigators highlighting their own research, not a broad enough scope of the field in my opinion. That being said, it is the best that is out there, and a "must have" for clinicians and researchers interested in hypertension in pregnancy in all of its forms.
Summary: methyldopa-pheochromocytoma-pregnacy
Rating: 4
As a cardiologist that has been involved recently in dealing with hypertension and pregnacy I found this book very useful, but with surprise I notice that in Chapter 19, Chronic Hypertension and Pregnacy by P. August and M. Lindheimer there isn’t any mention about the interference that can produce methyldopa in the laboratory diagnostic of pheocromocytoma.
Summary: PRACTICAL AND BASICAL

The Harvard Medical School Guide to Healthy Eating During Pregnancy (Harvard Medical School Guides)

The Harvard Medical School Guide to Healthy Eating During Pregnancy (Harvard Medical School Guides)
By W. Allan Walker, Courtney Humphries
Publisher: McGraw-Hill
Number Of Pages: 304
Publication Date: 2005-12-20
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0071443320
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780071443326
Product Description:
No strict diets, no scary guidelines–just the essential nutrition expectant moms need to start their babies on the road to lifelong health
All parents know that kids need nutritious foods as they grow. But new research confirms that what you eats during pregnancy can also profoundly affect the health of your baby when that baby becomes an adult–for better or for worse. Endorsed by the Harvard Medical School and written by one of the world’s leading experts in nutrition for pregnant women and babies, this guide offers more solid information and medically sound advice on prenatal nutrition than any other book on the market.
Summary: Same old "SAD" (Standard American Diet) Advice
Rating: 3
Yes, there are some good things in this book, you probably already know them.
Avoid refined grains during pregnancy
Avoid smoking during pregnancy
Avoid alcohol during pregnancy
The typical diet advice seems to be parroted everywhere including this book.
*Low fat diet
*Pasteurized dairy only
*Eat lots of grains
This is a diet designed to create weak and poorly nourished children. While it is better than eating junk food, it isn’t going to be nourishing.
The chapter about how prenatal nutrition is vital is definitely interesting, but the nutritional guidelines laid forth are not going to accomplish the best results. The author talks about mercury in fish being a concern and sites FDA evidence that 8 percent of women have high levels of mercury in their blood. But are we to believe this is from them eating pounds of tuna every week? Or is this from mercury laden drugs, pollution, food additives and fillings as the cause? Huge studies such as one recently published in Lancet, have shown that naturally occurring mercury in fish, even if it raises the mercury in the mother’s blood stream, shows NO DANGER for pregnancy.
People need healthy fats from whole foods to be healthy. Pregnant women get essential vitamins from healthy fats, that’s why even this book recommends fish, and eggs for pregnancy. But then it goes on to say that saturated fats are unhealthy, which doesn’t make sense.
Diets of indigenous groups across the planet, who had healthy babies, and uncomplicated births knew what to eat during pregnancy. Special foods included raw grassfed dairy, sea foods which included the organs, and fatty foods from the land and sea. Healthy people never had refined flour, or "organic" breakfast cereals or soy milk. By returning to a whole foods diet based upon generations of healthy people, we can reclaim our pregnancy health. Learn how to do it in Healing Our Children: Because Your New Baby Matters! Sacred Wisdom for Preconception, Pregnancy, Birth and Parenting (ages 0-6).
Summary: Very informative
Rating: 4
I found this book full with tips and information on what to expect through pregnancy. I think it’s worth the read to understand exactly why you need to eat healthy throug pregnancy.
Summary: Great Book
Rating: 5
I liked this book because it was the only book I could find with real information about artificial sweeteners. It seemed to be up to date and it gave the info understood from the most current research.
Summary: Good Source
Rating: 4
I read this book cover to cover and to be honest, I don’t think I learned anything new. In fact there is surprisingly little time devoted to actually how/what to eat! It seems like most of the book is devoted to the idea that how you eat during pregnancy will affect your child’s health later in life. So if you need motivation to reach for the veggies everyday, this would be a great book to read. But overall it’s the same tips about what to avoid, eat from the food pyramid, etc. Having said that, I gave it four stars because even though the information isn’t new, it feels good to get it from a reputable source since half the stuff you read, it’s hard to tell if you can trust it. Additionally, there are some wonderful, easy, healthy recipes at the end of the book!
Summary: The bottom line: Get ready for baby!
Rating: 5
Kudos to Dr. Walker on the second publication (although I wish I had this one first!) on health and wellness for mothers and their babies.
This ‘easy-to-ingest’ book is an excellent resource for information on what to eat, what to avoid, and even includes tips on exercise and creative recipes for snack and mealtimes.
Take care of yourself, and take care of your baby!

Product Description:
An innovative approach to lowering blood pressure that builds on the national bestseller The Relaxation Response
For the 100 million people worldwide dealing with high blood pressure, bestselling author Dr. Herbert Benson and cardiac wellness expert Aggie Casey have created a proven plan for lowering blood pressure. Based on the groundbreaking work done at the Mind/Body Medical Institute, the authors’ program goes beyond advice about nutrition and exercise to incorporate a proven stress-management program–including the relaxation response.
Summary: Book is informative
Rating: 4
This book is good but the only draw back is that there was nothing in there that I didnt know.
Summary: 3-Step Process to lowering your blood pressure
Rating: 4
Let me begin by stating that the amount of knowledge that you already have regarding high blood pressure will greatly affect how much you gain from reading this book. Over half of this book covers very basic information regarding blood pressure; For example, what is blood pressure, what is a normal blood pressure reading, the difference between high blood pressure and hypertension, the co-relation between sodium consumption and blood pressure, etc. If you don’t have some or any of the information regarding these topics, then you will surely gain alot of knowledge and will really enjoy reading this book. If you know most or all of these topics already, then you will gain nothing from over half of the book.
Now, the other half of the book centers around concrete examples on how you can lower your blood pressure, using a three step approach. The three-step approach, as you would imagine, is composed of stress management, diet, and exercise. I personally gained a world of knowledge on the stress management section, since I already had alot of the knowledge regarding how diet and exercise affect blood pressure.
Although this review might sound like I didn’t like this book, that is not the case. I simply had done alot of research on my own, and found alot of the information that I already knew in this book. However, I did encounter plenty of information that will help me to continue to keep my blood pressure at regular levels. I especially reccommend this book for anyone that has recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure, especially as an initial research tool.
Summary: Good Advice on Blood Pressure Control
Rating: 5
This is an easily read guide to most of the basics on controlling blood pressure. In addition it has 34 pages of interesting healthy recipes. I recommend this book.

Medical Terminology Demystified
By Dale Layman
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Professional
Number Of Pages: 400
Publication Date: 2005-11-17
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0071461043
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780071461047
Product Description:
There’s no easier, faster, or more practical way to learn the really tough subjects
Medical Terminology Demystified covers all the basic terms of disease and injury, abnormal anatomy and physiology, surgical techniques, drugs, and other therapies–in the context of real, practical health issues. This self-teaching guide comes complete with key points, background information, quizzes at the end of each chapter, and even a final exam.
This book is for people who want to get acquainted with the basic concepts of
medical terminology without having to take a formal course. It can also serve as
a supplemental text in a classroom, tutored, or home-schooling environment. It
should also be useful for career changers who need to refresh their knowledge
of the subject. I recommend that you start at the beginning of this book and go
straight through.
There are 5 icons (cartoon pictures) that repeatedly appear in the page margins
of every chapter. Each icon takes the form of a “Memory Pill”—a key fact for
you to write down and remember in a “Memory Pillbox” (handy numbered
grid) at chapter end. An Anatomy icon indicates a key fact about normal body
structure. Conversely, a Physiology icon labels an important fact about normal
body function. Knowing some of these key structure-function facts in the normal
body helps you to understand their associated disease and disorders within the
abnormal body.
The medical terminology of the book provides key facts tagged as Disease
icons and other facts as Treatment/Therapy icons. Finally, there are numerous
Background and History icons that identify critical people and historical
events behind the development of medical terminology. A special icon is that of
Hippocrates (pronounced as hih-PAHK-rah-tees). Hippocrates was an ancient
Greek physician who is considered the Father of Modern Medicine. For this reason,
MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY DEMYSTIFIED is subtitled as “A Visit with
Hippocrates.” The Ghost of Hippocrates is our narrator, who guides us along
throughout the book. He is occasionally assisted by both Professor Joe, the Talking
Skeleton (from ANATOMY DEMYSTIFIED and PHYSIOLOGY DEMYSTIFIED),
and by Baby Heinie (his mischievous little sidekick). The goal is to provide
some meaningful “edu-tainment”—“education” plus “entertainment”—for
the reader.

Product Description:
In the last 35 years, declining deaths from heart disease have translated into 13 million lives saved and extended. Medical treatments and lifestyle changes have dealt successfully with the serious heart problems of Vice President Richard Cheney, talk show host David Letterman, Disney-ABC CEO Michael Eisner, and countless other less famous people. In the past, those with serious heart disease would have died young, but today can live a long and active life. Few families have not benefited from improvements in the way we treat and prevent heart problems. Yet, we often hear that poor lifestyles and the limitations of modern medicine threaten our health and well-being. Although room for improvement always remains, this book demonstrates the contrary - that we have made and continue to make tremendous progress in dealing with heart disease.
Summary: Documented prognosis for future battle against heart disease

Product Description:
HIV/AIDS continues to be the pandemic of our times. It is estimated that 36 to 45 million people including 2-3 million children already are infected worldwide and an additional 4-7 million more are infected each year.
There has not been a comprehensive medically based AIDS prevention book published in the last five years. Since that time many new program interventions have been tried and much has been learned through evidence-based research. HIV Prevention will place special focus on the array of interventions that have been proven effective through rigorous study. If there is one theme that has been learned to date it is that there is no one-size-fits-all prevention approach that will work in all the geographic, demographic and socio-cultural environments impacted by the worldwide AIDS pandemic.
* Discusses all aspects of AIDS prevention, from epidemiology, molecular immunology and virology to the principles of broad-based public health prevention interventions.
* Special focus on the array of interventions that have been proven effective through rigorous study
* Identifies new trends in HIV/AID epidemiology and their impact on creating and implementing prevention interventions
* Incorporates virology, biology, infectious diseases, vaccinology, microbicides and research methodologies into AIDS prevention

Product Description:
Pediatric Psychopharmacology: Principles and Practice is an authoritative and comprehensive text on the use of medication in the treatment of children and adolescents with serious neuropsychiatric disorders. This benchmark volume consists of 56 chapters written by internationally recognized leaders, and is divided into four interrelated sections. The first, Biological Bases of Pediatric Psychopharmacology, reviews key principles of neurobiology and the major psychiatric illnesses of childhood from a perspective rooted in developmental psychopathology. The second, Somatic Interventions, presents the major classes of psychiatric drugs, as well as complementary and alternative somatic interventions, such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), and naturopathic approaches. The third and longest section, Assessment and Treatment, starts with clinical assessment, diagnostic evaluation, and comprehensive treatment planning, and goes on to cover the evidence-based analysis of drug treatments for the major disorders. Special populations (such as children with comorbid mental retardation, substance abuse or medical illness) are specifically discussed, and the coordination of their treatment with non-somatic therapies is explicitly addressed. The final section, Epidemiologic, Research, and Methodological Considerations, deals with broad population-relevant topics such as regulation and policy, pharmacoepidemiology, and the critical importance of sound ethical principles for clinical investigation. The book concludes with an appendix on generic and commercial drug name equivalencies, preparations, and available dosages.L This timely text is intended for child and adolescent psychiatrists, general and developmental pediatricians, family practitioners, general psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals who work with children and adolescents.
Summary: Worth it’s weight in Aripiprazole
Rating: 5
Just follow me for second here: Go back to the dawn of the Cenozoic Era, the Paleocene epoch, 65 million years ago, when the mammalian radiation happened. That was a big deal. And what was it all about? A couple small little animals changed made a major change in their life strategies (actually just the females of the species, the males remain reptilian), which was valuing quality over quantity. Instead of laying tons of eggs, let’s make less embryos. But nurture them. Nurture them with all our bodily resources. Let them lay parasitically within us while their brains and other organs mature. Think of it! The emergence of Parenting! Must have been a good idea, within just four million years, mammals radiated stunningly fast, filling the empty ecological niches left by dinosaurs, hoofed mammals achieving a glorious diversity (though still no larger than today’s dogs).
So what does that have to do with us? Glad you asked. Not too much until 57 million years ago when our family, the primates, was born. Let’s do this: Longer gestation, longer dependencies, bigger brains, better brains.
I’d love to linger on the details, but I have to get around to my point, and reviewing this wonderful, beautiful book. So let’s skip to the Pliocene, 5 million years ago, when hominids diverged from our cousins the chimpanzees and bonobos (oh those dirty, dirty bonobos). What made us unique at that point? Three things: 1) Bigger brains. 2) Even longer periods of dependency, with longer infancy, longer toddlerhood, longer latency. All necessary for brains that are too big to be fully developed at birth, with a wider capacity for learned behaviors relative to instinctual behaviors. This, more than ever, necessitates parenting, or at least some kind of nurturing from the older generation to the younger. Which then allows for a greater capacity for culture, shared communal behaviors and beliefs passed down through the generations. And probably helped contribute to uniqueness 3) tool use. Yes, I know other species use tools of a sort, but we’ve gotten more sophisticated than sticking pruned twigs into termite mounds.
So here we are, human beings. I will refrain from calling us the most evolved species on the planet, since technically everything alive today is equally evolved for its niche (my cat can jump, change directions in mid-air, catch a bird in his mouth. I can’t do that but I consistently beat him in backgammon). We are entitled to some species chauvinism, we certainly seem to have the most complex brains on the planet.
The things, then, that make us uniquely human, all converge in the modern medical sub-specialty of child and adolescent psychopharmacology. Using the most sophisticated tools our species have designed to date (psychoactive drugs), we help care for children, help cultivate the potential within the larger, more complex brains of the modern human children. Child Psychiatry is therefore both the leading edge, the ultimate extension of the trajectory of human evolution, as well as also being the most primitive, natural endeavor in medicine, motivated by the most instinctual elements of human character.
Having completed the transition to lower quantity, higher quality offspring, we have extended the dependency of children, and the need for nurturing to it’s extreme. So this is our duty, our obligation. Children are vulnerable, and therefore deserve the best efforts of the best among us to help protect and care for them.
This is why treating psychiatrically ill children is the single most intellectually challenging field in medicine. The most stamina-testing, the most ethically challenging, the most emotionally challenging. Children in crisis stir our paternal and/or maternal instincts, and working with them forces us to cultivate our own resilience and stability. There is no better or more important field in medicine right now. Oh sure, let the surgeons continue to preen about the hospital as if their butchery and carpentry skills gives them ownership of the entire field of medicine. Let these barely sublimated sadists have their glory, they certainly seem to need it. Meanwhile, we know who the real brain surgeons are.
So, if we are going to do this, let’s do armed and equipped with the best, most accessible information possible. That is why I strongly and unreservedly give this textbook my highest possible recommendation (which, on Amazon, consists of 5 stars, the same recommendation I gave to Blueberry poptarts… Oh well). Children are not just little adults. They have different brains. Different tracts have been myelinated, different nuclei have relatively different densities of receptors, the ratio of cytochrome P450 enzymes differ. Drugs, even when dosage is adjusted for size and metabolism, can have different side effect profiles for children then adults. For mostly obvious ethical and practical reasons, drugs cannot be tested on children as easily and systematically as in adult trials. So we should be very careful when medicating children. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do it. When diagnoses are made thoughtfully and accurately, medications can be tremendously helpful for children. It can give children their lives back. Some children, able to get their symptoms manageable, find their families interacting different, teachers interact with them different, and their self-confidence can begin to restore itself.
This is a great book, and as of this moment in time, I would say it is the single best comprehensive resource for doctors who are prescribing psychiatric medications to children or adolescents. I’d tell you more about the book but I’m already closing in on 1000 words just trying to convey my passion for the topic. But you get contributions from the best in the field, you have sections devoted to the biological bases of pediatric illness, different diagnoses and different somatic interventions, discussions on other somatic interventions such as complementary and alternative medicines and ECT, and plenty of chapters on assessment and treatment. There is a section on epidemiological, research, and methodological considerations and appendices with quick prescribing information "at a glance." It is a thorough text, worth the price. Even has decent discussions of special populations such as substance abusers, medically ill children, psychopharm during pregnancy, and individuals with MR. Trust me. If you are planning to do a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry, or if you are in one of the all too numerous underserved areas where non-specialists find themselves prescribing psychoactive medications to children, you owe it to yourself and to the patients and families you treat to have a copy of this book.
