FROM THE PREFACEThis book addresses problems and solutions of formulation and preformulation with which I have concerned myself for 34 years. When I was employed in the pharmaceutical industry I worked at functions, in the 1960’s, which were the precursors of preformulation, and my early publications dealt with such matters. In the following decades advances have been made in methodology and the realm of preformulation has grown. Theory and the way in which problems are viewed have also undergone change. The text deals with the pharmaceutical aspects of preformulation, not the synthetic nor the analytical aspects. It takes its vantage point at the point in time when the pharmaceutical preformulator first obtains a sample of the drug substance, and it explores the physical, chemical and technological aspects that are needed for a full exploration of the potential advantages and disadvantages of the drug substance. It is only through the understanding of underlying principles that adequate exploration can be carried out.

Electrochemical Detection in HPLC: Analysis of Drugs and Poisons is the first monograph devoted to the application of this mode of analysis to the assay of exogenous compounds such as drugs in biological fluids and associated areas.

The introductory chapters provide information on basic electrochemistry and HPLC-ED, and on trouble-shooting. The specialized area of thiol analysis is also discussed in detail. Salient practical details of published applications of the technique in analytical toxicology and related areas are provided in a standard format. Alternative techniques are suggested throughout. The emphasis is on the analysis of exogenous compounds, although catecholamines and other endogenous species are discussed in so far as they may be used as drugs.

The practical nature of this book will make it useful to professionals working in the field. It will also be of benefit to analysts wishing to use HPLC-ED in the analysis of biological samples for analytes not specifically covered in the volume.

Drugs: From Discovery to Approval, 2nd edition

Drugs: From Discovery to Approval
By Rick Ng

Publisher: Wiley-Blackwell
Number Of Pages: 466
Publication Date: 2008-12-03
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 047019510X
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780470195109
Binding: Hardcover

The new edition of this best-selling book continues to offer a user-friendly, step-by-step introduction to all the key processes involved in bringing a drug to the market, including the performance of pre-clinical studies, the conduct of human clinical trials, regulatory controls, and even the manufacturing processes for pharmaceutical products. Concise and easy to read, the book quickly introduces basic concepts, then moves on to discuss target selection and the drug discovery process for both small and large molecular drugs. The new edition features many key enhancements, including Key Points, Chapter Summary, and Review Questions in each chapter, Answers to Review Questions provided in a book-end appendix, and one or two carefully selected “mini” case studies in each chapter.

Summary: Good book to discover the world of drug discovery
Rating: 3

If you are not a specialist in the field of drug discovery but need nevertheless to have a comprehensive knowledge of the process that starts at the discovery of a potential new drug and ends at the registration of the drug with a regulatory agency, this book is for you. The book is full of flowcharts and illustrations that help you to understand the process. It’s certainly not a book for specialists, but can be really helpful for lawyers, contracts officers and everyone who works in the drug discovery industry.

Summary: A simple, yet comprehensive introduction
Rating: 3

It’s tough to learn quickly about the complexities of pharma R&D. This is a useful guide for those new to the industry and fills in the gaps for those more experienced. Like all books of its type, it will age quite rapidly in an sector undergoing rapid scientific and organizational change.

Summary: An easy way to understand a complex process
Rating: 5

I work in an organization that supports advanced gene therapy research that may lead to new therapies for chronic and life threatening diseases, but I am not a scientist. As a communicator, I needed to understand the long and arduous journey from discovery to pre-clinical research, to FDA-approved clinical manufacturing, and to human clinical trials. This book was excellent in helping me understand both the research and the regulatory environment.

The author says it best in the introduction, “The intention of this book is to provide an overview about how a drug is discovered, the amount of and types of laboratory tests that are performed, and the conduct of clinical trials before a drug is ready to registered for human use.” The author also fully explains the role of regulatory authorities in these processes.

The book includes chapters on:
Drug discovery
Drug development and preclinical studies
Clinical trials
Good Manufacturing Practice

You’ll also learn about things like toxicology studies, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacokinetics, and Investigational New Drug applications. Although the book contains some technical discussions and exhibits, the author has a logical and easy-to-understand way of presenting the information.

If, like me, you need to get a better understanding of process of getting basic drug research to the market, this book is for you.

Summary: Broad coverage with little in-depth detail
Rating: 3

This book is written to cover a broad range of topics related to the drug discovery and approval process. Since so many topics are covered, there is very little in-depth coverage on any particular topic. It’s suitable people who don’t have any serious scientific training or experience in the industry. If you are looking for a high-level overview, this is a good book. If you would like more detailed information about any specific topic, you should probably look elsewhere. Some of the explaintions are over simplied in order for the average reader to understand. Much of the material covered in the book can be found in much greater detail by visiting the fda site or googling for the code of federal regulations. But if you do not what the FDA is or what CFR stands for, this book is probably right for you.

Summary: Good overview of the drug development and regulatory process
Rating: 5

This is a very clear and concise review of the drug development process as well as the regulatory issues. It is well organized and well written. It is not a “behind the scenes” nitty-gritty book, but will help anyone who wants to understand the process.

After the discovery of endogenous NO formation in the late ’80s and the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, many researchers and physicians again became interested in the NO/sGC interaction and cGMP-dependent signaling. This book is an enthusiastic celebration of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) and amply illustrates the importance of this field of science to patients and the way in which the field has evolved. It is exclusively devoted to this exciting and important signaling molecule, addressing all recent advances in understanding guanylate cyclase regulation, NO/sGC interactions, cGMP effector mechanisms and their pathophysiological and pharmacological implications. Particular attention will also be given to clinical applications of the novel cGMP-elevating drugs which are on the horizon, thus spanning the continuum from basic science to clinic.

Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Second Edition

ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0849318734

Binding: Hardcover

Since the publication of the first edition of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology over a decade ago, a not-so-subtle shift in the meaning of the term “biotechnology” has occurred. It has come to mean something very specific, namely the development of drug substances with large protein and polypeptide molecules. These substances can be used as drugs in their own right but may also be used to manipulate cellular DNA in order to produce a required molecule that is believed to have desirable properties in the treatment of a disease. Accordingly, the second edition of this popular text reflects that change of definition by including new material that explores the development of these protein-based therapeutic substances. See what’s new in the Second Edition: · Expanded coverage of the formulation of proteins · Additional information on proteins used as drug delivery systems · Detailed discussion of interactions between proteins and phospholipids · Increased information on proteomics and gene therapy · Exploration of pulmonary administration and oral delivery of proteins · A broad review of vaccines · Discussion of genetic engineering and genomics · Challenges and issues involved in the development and the production of a drug

A Field Guide to Medicinal Plants: Eastern and Central North America (Peterson Field Guide Series, 40)
By Steven Foster, James A. Duke

Publisher: Houghton Mifflin (T)
Number Of Pages: 384
Publication Date: 1990-06
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0395353092
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780395353097
Binding: Hardcover

The first comprehensive pocket-size guide to medicinal plants shows how to identify 500 of these plants.

Summary: Good, but NOT a Great Book
Rating: 3

Depending upon how seriously you are studying plants - this book is a bit too generic. The pictures are pretty but not enough detail. Mostly hand drawn and one plant looks just like another with no real info for determining differences. Bottom line, if you’re not sure about a plant, leave it alone.

That said, this is an excellent book for the very beginner in herbal studies. Establish a solid library before delving into this world. You will be amazed at what cures are living in your own backyard!

Summary: Very nice.
Rating: 5

This is excellent reading at home and on the go. You’ll want to buy two of these just so you have one at home, and one you can really rough handle on the road. ) If you’re into medicinal herbs or you just love knowing what’s what out in the wild, this guide is number one! A MUST! You need it now.

Summary: Most Interesting Book You’ll Ever Find!!
Rating: 5

This book was so fabulous, in fact, I give it more than five stars, I give it twenty! It is because of this book that I now want to be an ethnobotanical chemisist. This book has such pep and drive, just the Introduction and Preface make you want to go outside start a weed garden, picket the FDA, and go to college for seven years to get your degree in botanical chemistry. You don’t believe me, but I’m serious. READ THIS BOOK! If not the whole book, at least the Introduction and Preface. It’ll give you SO much energy.

Summary: An outstanding field guide with uses, drawings and photos
Rating: 5

This is one of the better field guides available for identifying and determining the usefulness of many medicinal plants found commonly in the Eastern and Central US. This guide is recommended for beginners and experienced medicinal plant enthusiasts alike. A must have book for the novice in this field.

Today, more than 75 percent of pharmaceutical drug trials in the United States are being conducted in the private sector. Once the sole province of academic researchers, these important studies are now being outsourced to non-academic physicians.

According to Jill A. Fisher, this major change in the way medical research is performed is the outcome of two problems in U.S. health care: decreasing revenue for physicians and decreasing access to treatment for patients. As physicians report diminishing income due to restrictive relationships with insurers, increasing malpractice insurance premiums, and inflated overhead costs to operate private practices, they are attracted to pharmaceutical contract research for its lucrative return. Clinical trials also provide limited medical access to individuals who have no or inadequate health insurance because they offer “free” doctors’ visits, diagnostic tests, and medications to participants. Focusing on the professional roles of those involved, as well as key research practices, Fisher assesses the risks and advantages for physicians and patients alike when pharmaceutical drug studies are used as an alternative to standard medical care.

The vast progress made in the investigation of biomolecules using NMR has only recently been rewarded with the Nobel Prize for Kurt W?h. Edited by a former coworker of W?h, this book presents the theoretical background on NMR of biomolecules, plus the use of NMR techniques in determining the structures of proteins and nucleic acids.

BioNMR spectroscopy offers a universal tool for examining the binding of an active substance to its target protein. Its use thereby benefits the rational development of drugs. This interaction can now be investigated in a hitherto unparalleled precision and displayed in 3D—an important prerequisite for the targeted development of new active substances. The latest methods for characterizing substance-receptor complexes are demonstrated backed by many case studies from pharmaceutical research. Thus it comes as no surprise that a large number of the authors are working for leading pharmaceutical companies.

With its successful mixture of basic information and application strategies, coupled with many real-life examples, this is an invaluable guide for both NMR spectroscopists and pharmaceutical researchers.

A crucial issue for antiviral therapy is the fact that all antiviral substances rapidly select for resistance; thus, monitoring and overcoming resistance has become a most important clinical paradigm of antiviral therapy. This calls for cautious use of antiviral drugs and implementation of combination therapies. In parallel, efforts in drug discovery have to be continued to develop compounds with novel mode-of-action and activity against resistant strains. This book reviews the current status of antiviral therapy, from the roads to development of new compounds to their clinical use and cost effectiveness. Individual chapters address in more detail all available drug classes and outline new approaches currently under development.

There can be few pharmaceutical companies over the last 15 years that have not undergone the maelstrom of take-overs, mergers, downsizing, centres of excellence or product rationalisation. All these events can, and frequently do, result in product or products being transferred between manufacturing sites. At best it will be a product or product type that the receiving site is familiar with, or at worst, one with which they are totally unfamiliar.
The challenges to effect technology transfer in a timely fashion, within budget and achieving savings that have probably been pre-commirted, at the requisite quality are approximately the same for each aspect.
This guide provides a “ready reckoner” of the issues to be considered to achieve these
objectives, ensuring that the regulatory issues from both a licensing and inspection
perspective are addressed, and maintaining the organisation’s integrity for its products
and with its shareholders.
In considering the technology transfer process reference is made to the situation
within the European union (EU) in the main; however, where useful guides or
proposals are available from other regulatory authorities, notably the FDA, these have
been included for completeness.

Life Saving Drugs: The Elusive Magic Bullet (RSC Paperbacks)

Life Saving Drugs: The Elusive Magic Bullet (RSC Paperbacks)
By John Mann

Publisher: Royal Society of Chemistry
Number Of Pages: 245
Publication Date: 2004-11-19
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0854046348
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780854046348
Binding: Paperback

In 1900 only a handful of drugs (morphine, quinine, aspirin etc) had genuine efficacy and recovery from infections was haphazard. Now there are literally thousands of drugs and life-threatening infections have been either overcome or much diminished.

Life-saving Drugs: the Elusive Magic Bullet describes the discovery and development of antibacterial, anti-viral and anti-cancer drugs. The book highlights the colourful characters behind the inventions and the huge improvements in quality of life and life-expectancy that these drugs have produced.

Emphasis is given to the new drugs that have emerged as a result of knowledge of the human genome, and the ways in which the newer drugs are being designed to tackle disease, particularly cancer, at the genetic level. Chemical structures are provided for all of the key drugs and the book is well illustrated.

Life-saving Drugs: the Elusive Magic Bullet can be read as a history of drug development during the past 100 years by those with only a passing knowledge of chemistry. For anyone entering the medical profession, pharmacy, or nursing, it will provide a superb basic knowledge of all drugs they are ever likely to meet, including their modes of action. For the chemist or medicinal chemist, it will provide the fundamental knowledge of life-saving drugs that they all should know. And for the non-scientist who wants to know about ’super-bugs’, SARS, Ebola, and all of the wonderful advances in treating cancer, it is illuminating and easy to read.

Lithium, the treatment of choice for mania since its usefulness was first reported, has been shown to have varied effects on multiple biological systems, including electrolyte flux and neurochemistry. Recent advances in cellular and molecular biology promise to provide clinicians with a better understanding of the etiology of bipolar disorder and new options for treatment. Bipolar Medications: Mechanisms of Action presents the treatment and prophylaxis of bipolar disorder. More than 40 investigators share research and insight into the neurobiological mechanisms that help to explain the powerful effects of new antibipolar drugs. This comprehensive text -Examines valproic acid, lamotrigine, inositol monophosphatase inhibitors, and protein kinase C inhibitors that have the potential to revolutionize clinical practice and provide new hypotheses on the etiology of bipolar disorder -Presents the current understanding of the cellular mechanisms of action of mood-stabilizing agents -Discusses the emergence of valproate as a powerful lithium alternative and examines the preliminary indications that lamotrigine will be an effective option -Examines the issue of withdrawal rebound, which can make lithium ineffective or even counterproductive, and reviews inositol monophosphatase inhibitors that mimic lithium action in patients -Compares lithium, carbamazepine, and valproate and their differential mechanisms, which could form the basis of a “rational polypharmacy” of manic depressive illness -Examines behavioral models important in the screening of new antibipolar compounds and the effects of antibipolar compounds on immediate early genes Complete with extensive references, tables, and figures, this text is essential reading for any clinician who treats patients with bipolar disorder. It thoroughly documents the latest in psychopharmacology, as well as projecting future advances in the treatment of bipolar disorder.

Cocaine Cowboys 2 - Hustlin’ With The Godmother

Publisher: Magnolia
Number Of Pages:
Publication Date:
ISBN-10 / ASIN: B00180R03Q

Binding: DVD

Charles Cosby’s life is changed forever when he writes a fan letter to the “Cocaine Godmother” Griselda Blanco, who is serving time in a federal prison. Six months later, Cosby is a multi-millionaire, Blanco’s lover, and the head of her $40 million a year cocaine business. Also known as “The Black Widow” for her propensity to permanently dispose of her men when she’s done with them, Blanco stops at nothing to ensure that Charles is faithful. Cosby soon learns he’s in way over his head.

Summary: Cocaine Cowboys 2
Rating: 4

Fascinating detail of the Godmother’s criminal and personal actions throughout the 80’s and 90’s. The only thing missing was a live shot of her after her deportation from the US. Would love to see how she’s living now. Exceptional footage of Dade County during the days of the Cocaine Cowboys - wonderful documentary.

Summary: Better than the first
Rating: 5

A Great true story. I have watched this movie over and over. Everyone who watches it has their eyes glued to the screen. It’s the only sequel I saw that you didn’t have to see the first one to follow part 2.The godmother is the real scarface. I liked how the movie showed her dangerous cut throat side. As well as her softer side, how she loved her children and charles cosby. This is the best documentary I have ever seen. I liked the music in the movie especially the theme song real scarface by ncredable. I hope they make a video for it that would be cool! I found the whole song at myspace.com/ncredable

Summary: Gripping Animation re-enactments make it more visually understandable = LIFE is STRANGER than FICTION.
Rating: 4

It contains a lot of strange and riveting revelations. For example, it showed how the actions of the two secretaries helped Charles Cosby escape prosecution for drug trafficking. It’s like the stuff from a Best Selling Novel. I could never have thought of it!

There must be some exaggeration of course. It’s because most of the movie was based on interviews with drug dealers. There’s no way to verify most of their claims. However, that does not reduce the entertaining value of the film.

This is the first documentation I watched that used animation for scenes that are difficult to be re-enacted. That helped tremendously.

No wonder some people want to sell drugs. They can become millionaire in a very short time. LIFE is indeed STRANGER than FICTION.

Summary: DEEP!
Rating: 4

This time we got to know the “godmother” up close and personal, if hollywood slept on the first installment i guranntee they’ll jump on this one(if the bootleggers dont beat’um to the punch) But solid story line front to back. I must say “godmother” was indeed a very complex individual

Summary: Cocaine Cowboys 2
Rating: 4

I enjoyed the movie alot. If you were a fan of the first movie you would like it very much. I thought that they could have had more interveiws with different people to give it a different perspective, but the movie was still enjoyable and picked up well from where the first movie left off.

Medicinal Plants of the World: Chemical Constituents, Traditional and Modern Medicinal Uses (Medicinal Plants of the World (Humana)) (Medicinal Plants of the World (Humana))

Medicinal Plants of the World: Chemical Constituents, Traditional and Modern Medicinal Uses (Medicinal Plants of the World (Humana)) (Medicinal Plants of the World (Humana))
By Ivan A. Ross

Publisher: Humana Press
Number Of Pages: 415
Publication Date: 1999-01-15
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0896035425
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780896035423
Binding: Hardcover

Comprehensive text on herbal medicine documents the medicinal value of 27 major plant species used around. For each plant is included: how it is used in different countries, traditional therapeutic applications, what is known in clinical trials, a color photo, the common name, and more. For researchers and clinicians.

Summary: Great book
Rating: 5

I have been using the two books by I.A. Ross in the library, and hopefully will buy my own copies soon. The organization of information is excellent. There is a similarly titled book by van Wyk and Michael Wink, which I bought sometime ago before I discovered the books by Ross. The book by Wyk and Wink, with its misleading title,is quite inferior to the books by Ivan Ross. My main grouse with the Wyk and Wink book was its over-representation of European plants, considering the relative small size of Europe and the small number of people there who rely on herbal medicines, compared to the hundreds of millions of people who depend on medicinal plants in Africa, Asia and South America. In any case, most of the “medicinal plants of the world” are in those continents. The second reviewer should be quite pleased with th book by Wyk and Wink, with its near-equation of “world” with Europe-North America. One distinguishing feature of these excellent books by Ross is its information on the traditional medicinal preparations of these plants. This is information you rarely come across in the so-called Encyclopedias of Herbs published to profit from what the publishers obviously treat as a fad. The choice of plants by Ivan Ross is quite consistent because they are mostly plants used by millions for whom herbal therapy is not just ‘alternative therapy’. The scientific information collected in these books make these books invaluable reference books for a wide range of professionals

Summary: A very interesting book for the scientist or layperson.
Rating: 4

As a layperson interested in the value of medicinal plants, I found this book very interesting. Even though it is primarily a book geared toward the scientific community, I found the traditional uses and pharmacological activities interesting enough to cause me to research these plants further. I like the fact that many of the plants discussed are common food plants and I was not aware of the medicinal values of them. I would recommend that anyone, either scientist or layperson, interested in furthering their knowledge in this area purchase this book. I would think that any scientist interested in this field would certainly want this book as an addition to their reference library.

Summary: Very disappointing
Rating: 2

As someone working actively in the field of phytotherapies, I was extremely disappointed when this bbok landed on my desk by our research library - a waste of budget to say the least. The depth of each plant reviewed is on the whole well done, however, Europe as a land mass let alone a group of exciting people, does not appear to exist for this FDA author. The introductory preface clearly identifies that the author is not in tune with real global herbal medicine. Only 27 plants are reviewed, and the choice is bizzare and incoherent. Don’t bother with it - there are far better books available!
