The 2002 World Market Forecasts for Imported Medicaments including Veterinary Medicaments
by: Philip M. Parker

This series was created for international firms who rely on foreign export markets for a
substantial portion of their business or who might be threatened by foreign trade competition.
The estimates given in this report were created using a methodology developed by and under the
direct supervision of Professor Philip M. Parker, the Eli Lilly Chaired Professor of Innovation,
Business and Society, at INSEAD. The methodology, relying on historical figures of economic
growth and trade flows, estimates the market shares of some 150 countries for over 500 industrial
or product categories. The figures should be seen as market estimates, as opposed to historical
records, as these are projected for the current year of trade.

Chromatography of Antibiotics (Journal of Chromatography Library)

Chromatography of Antibiotics (Journal of Chromatography Library)
By Gerald H. Wagman, Marvin Joseph Weinstein

Publisher: Elsevier Science Ltd
Number Of Pages: 247
Publication Date: 1973-10
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0444411062
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780444411068
CHROMATOGRAPHIC CLASSIFICATION OF ANTIBIOTICS
Over the years many investigators have devised numerous procedures for classification
and identification of antibiotics by use of chromatographic techniques. In earlier years,
these various chromatographc systems were quite usuable because of the relatively small
number of antibiotics compared to the present. With the thousands of antibiotics
currently known, systematic chromatographic classification of this large number of
compounds is extremely difficult. It is possible to group many of these substances, but in
order to identify very closely related antibiotics in a particular group the use of many
additional chromatographic systems may be required. This book is not written as a means
of systematic chromatography but hopefully as an aid in identifying very similar compounds
by use of specific chromatographic techniques. A number of methods proposed for
classification of antibiotics into groups and within groups will be reviewed for use in the
preliminary or presumptive identification of some of these compounds. More definitive
identification should be possible by selective use of the index comprising the body of the
book.
In 1959 Miyazaki et al. described a method of grouping antibiotics according to their
salting out chromatograms. The antibiotics were examined by means of ascending paper
chromatography. As solvents, distilled water and increasing concentrations of ammonium
chloride (0.5 to 20% and saturated solution) were used. Location of the antibiotic zones
were determined by bioautographic methods. Using this technique the antibiotics were
divided into four major groups. In group A the Rf values were not correlated with the
concentration of the ammonium chloride solution, identical values being found at all
concentrations and in distilled water. Group B consisted of the antibiotics which had an
Rf value of 0 in distilled water and increasing Rf values with increasing concentrations of
ammonium chloride. Group C displayed the highest Rf value in distilled water and lowered
values with increasing concentration of the ammonium chloride solution. G ~ o u pD
consisted of antibiotics which did not display any movement whatever in the solvent
from the starting point. This systematic method was extended by Uri’ who added two
additional groups. Group E consisted of antibiotics which had an Rf value of 0 in
distilled water and an initial increase with rising concentrations of ammonium chloride
with the maximum (Rf approximately 1) in 5% salt solution. Beyond this a decrease
occurred. This type of paper chromatogram was typical for the macrolides such as
oleandomycin, erythromycin, and carbomycin. Within the macrolide group further
differentiation was possible. An additional grouping, F, was made, which at that time
consisted of only one antibiotic, desertomycin. By connecting the Rf values using a
variety of concentrations of ammonium chloride solution paraboloid curves were obtained
which were different for different antibiotics.
Paris and Theallet3 were able to separate 23 antibiotics which were described in the
French Pharmacopia into seven groups utilizing paper and TLC as well as electrophoresis.
The groups were as follows: (1) penicillin and derivatives, (2) heterocyclic compounds
containing amino groups such as the aminoglycosides, (3) macrolides, (4) tetracyclines,
( 5 ) chloramphenicol and viomycin, (6) polypeptides, and (7) polyenes.
into five groups according to a chromatographic scheme.
Blinov and co-workers4 in 1969 were able t o separate over 300 antibacterial preparations
into five groups according to a chromatographic scheme.

Triumph of the Heart: The Story of Statins
by: Jie Jack Li

Triumph of the Heart: The Story of Statins
By Jie Jack Li

Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
Number Of Pages: 224
Publication Date: 2009-04-03
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0195323572
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780195323573

Product Description:

Over 25 million people in the U.S. alone have benefited from statins–such drugs as Lipitor, Zocor, Crestor, Pravachol, and other cholesterol-lowering medicines–in preventing stroke, heart attack, and other forms of coronary heart disease. But how did these remarkable, life-saving drugs come into being? In Triumph of the Heart, Dr. Jie Jack Li, a medicinal chemist and expert on drug discovery, tells for the first time the fascinating story of statins. Drawn from discussions with many scientists involved in the discovery and development of these drugs, the book illuminates the human side of science by revealing the role played by persistence, luck, and sudden insight that characterize major discoveries. For scientists in the drug industry, health care professionals, students of medicine, and all those intrigued by the basic human drive to explore and discover, Triumph of the Heart offers a compelling view of one of the most important drug discoveries of our time.

The Psilocybin Solution
by: Simon G. Powell

PROLOGUE: Who or What Killed Einstein? - In which the fierce and ultimately fatal face of
Nature is outlined. It appears that each of us, temporarily orchestrated out of physics, chemistry
and biology, be enmeshed within a relentlessly sophisticated evolutionary process, a process which,
for some reason, the Universe was always poised to sustain. Along with Mr Einstein (before Nature
consumed him), we bravely ask why the Universe should be endowed with such a remarkable
capacity? Why on Earth should Nature have facilitated the eventual emergence of consciousness?
What kind of a phenomenal tease is this? We rightly demand that Nature provide us with some
answers! The seed of a new idea is here planted - namely that altered states of consciousness
derived from wholly natural environmental resources can allow us to interface more intimately
with such a user-friendly reality process. In this way, we might really get some answers as to the
point of it all……

CHAPTER ONE: Consuming God’s Flesh - When you go down to the woods today be sure you
know your shamanic history. Introducing our main man Robert Gordon Wasson and his extensive
ethnobotanical research into the historical use of entheogenic fungi and how he eventually came to
unearth the extraordinary vision-inducing Mexican psilocybin mushroom in the 1950’s. This
adventurous man thus warms us up for the main features to come. Nature, by jove, turns out to be
wilder than we could possibly imagine, and, more importantly, inherently transcendental. The
natural alchemical substance psilocybin, an alkaloid still new to Western science, reveals itself as a
potential key to unlocking the mysteries of consciousness.

CHAPTER TWO: An Ancient Form of Communion - Details concerning the use of psilocybin
mushrooms by the once mighty Aztec and Mayan civilisations. The alluring conjecture that the
spiritual impulse originated from our ancestors’ ingestion of vision-inducing plants is also
introduced.

CHAPTER THREE: Psilocybin flows in and out of the Western Mind - The true story of how the
60’s got rolling on the back of an entheogenic mushroom.

CHAPTER FOUR: Investigating the Earth’s Alchemical Skin - We learn more about the shamanic
use of entheogenic plants as well as previewing the second wave of human-based psychedelic
science.

CHAPTER FIVE: The Mushroom and the Synapse - In which we delve into the neuronal
architecture of the brain so as to comprehend more fully the nature and potential dynamics of
consciousness. Meet the neuron, the synapse, the neurotransmitter, and the cunning route through
which psilocybin operates.

CHAPTER SIX: The Stuff of Consciousness - The mystery of the mutable human mind is cracked
open and served up on a plate of profound implications. We see how the symbolic visionary
dialogue induced by entheogenic agents represents the coalescence and integration of vast amounts
of information. The felt presence of the transcendental Other is then delineated in informational
terms.

CHAPTER SEVEN: A Universe of Information - The mind/body dualism of Descartes is laid to
rest, as information reveals itself as the fundamental stuff of Nature with consciousness itself
representing a particular pattern of information embodied within the neuronal substrate of the
brain. An attempt is then made to conquer an understanding of the essential nature of information.

CHAPTER EIGHT: Does the Universe Compute? - If the entire reality process can be understood
as a dynamic flow of information (consciousness included), then what on Earth governs the ongoing
evolution of such an informational system or computation as it must surely be? We boldly
investigate.

CHAPTER NINE: Wrestling with Reality - The mystery of our smart and obligingly intelligible
Universe is openly debated. Evolution by natural selection is re-interpreted as being the
manifestation of Natural Intelligence, a property of Nature which ensures that information is
continually integrated and organised. It thus emerges that a smart algorithmic code be inherent in
the very contextual fabric of Nature. Upon reflection, it would appear that we have never had it so
good, especially once we begin to apprehend our true situation at the hands of Natural Intelligence.

CHAPTER TEN: A Neo-Shamanic Climax - A casual word on the Omega Point and the surprise
lurking at the end of history. In particular, are we the means through which the transcendental
Other awakens?

EPILOGUE: Trick or Treat? - A practical guide to ascertaining the truth of my fantastic claims
for, Goddess knows, I could have been wrong all along.

Product Description:

The six reviews in this volume cover once again a most comprehensive range of topics. The anti-malarial activity of the 8-aminoquinolines is examined, with an eye to the development of a single, broad-spectrum drug. Chelation, important in removal of toxic metals from the body, is reviewed for tripositive elements. A new and promising approach to total parenteral nutrition is described. Our indebtedness to the plant origins of many modern drugs is noted in the context of new chemicals. Heterosteroids and receptor-specific opioid peptides constitute two further topics, each case highlighting the wide range of relevant biologically active compounds. Yet another volume challenging the staggering diversity of the field of medicinal chemistry.

Pharmacracy: Medicine and Politics in America

Pharmacracy: Medicine and Politics in America
By Thomas Szasz

Publisher: Praeger Trade
Number Of Pages: 240
Publication Date: 2001-07
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0275971961
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780275971960

Product Description:

In recent decades, American medicine has become increasingly politicized and politics has become increasingly medicalized. Behaviors previously seen as virtuous or wicked, wise or unwise are now dealt with as "healthy" or "sick"–unwanted behaviors to be controlled as if they were public health issues. The modern penchant for transforming human problems into "diseases" and judicial sanctions into "treatments," replacing the rule of law with the rule of medical discretion, leads to a type of government social critic Thomas Szasz calls "pharmacracy." This insidious political development is eroding our personal liberties while distorting our approach to both health care and politics.

Summary: Quack!
Rating: 1

Szasz and the reviewers fo this book have obviously never suffered from nor known anyone who suffers from a serious mental illness. Far from being just bad or unwanted behaviors or ‘fake diseases’, mental illness is a devastating disease that ruins lives and often kills its victims.
After years of denial and attemps to control my own behavior, my life spun out ot control and I went from a respected professional in my community to a manic-depressive psychotic, roaming the streets delusional, completely out of touch with reality. It took commitment to the state mental hospital to give me some insight into my problem.
Thanks to the drugs that Szasz and others find so questionable, I am now able to lead a normal, stable life. Without the progress made in pharmacology in the last thirty years many people like me would be confined to mental institutions for extended periods or permanently.
This book is nothing more than a rant by an elderly doctor who needs to catch up with the real world. There is much still to be learned about brain function and the mechanisms of these disorders, but the fact that we don’t have all the answers yet doesn’t mean that they aren’t out there. Or should I say in there?
Unless you don’t want to be pulled back into the ninteenth century, steer clear of this book. Szasz is quackers!

Summary: The Politics of Medicine
Rating: 5

This is a great book for laying to rest some orthodox but wrong ideas about our mental health. Szasz shows us that the orthodox way is not necessarily the right way. Certainly our own doctors are not going to blow the whistle on themselves, are they? This revolutionary psychiatrist shows us the real path to health, pointing us away from the wrong direction that the pharmaceutical companies have been leading us, and unfortunately, leading our doctors as well. It’s a case of the fox guarding the henhouse.
Do you care that a psychiatrist is a doctor who prescribes drugs to change people’s brains without ever actually examining those people’s brains? Do you worry that nobody knows exactly what the long-term effect of these drugs are that we are now being given for bi-polar disorder, for attention deficit disorder, for depression or for anxiety; or even if they are really doing us more harm than good? Do you know how doctors today are becoming more and more controlled and subverted by the pharmaceutical industry? Do you think that unwanted behavior and unwanted feelings like anxiety and depression are diseases that can be cured by drugs? If you do, you should read the latest book by this world renowned psychiatrist.
"Psychiatrists have a long history of systematically validating fake diseases as real diseases, and getting away with it," says Szasz. They can get away with it because it serves everybody: the family whose medical insurance will pay only for certain diagnoses and not for others; the government officials who can allocate more and more federal funds for their universities and laboratories; and the doctors who can service many more patients in the "service station" atmosphere that has us all believing that everything can be made right with the right pill. The only person whom fake diagnoses and powerful drugs are not serving is the health of the individual who is having his birthright sold for a pharmaceutical mess of pottage.
We are confusing, warns Szasz, bodily diseases which are physiochemical phenomena located in the body and understood by cellular pathology with unwanted personal habits or behaviors which are located in the social context of society and understood by the interconnecting relationships. We are confusing the mind with the brain. And finally, we are confusing medicine with politics and social agenda. In so doing we are becoming less and less the land of the free and the brave and more and more the land of the mentally ill and deluded. Szasz makes a good case for a new look at the insidious subversion of our medical care by the politics of pharmaceutical managed care.

Summary: this book could save your life
Rating: 5

Pharmacracy

Do you care that a psychiatrist is a doctor who prescribes drugs to change people’s brains without ever actually examining those people’s brains? Do you worry that nobody knows exactly what the long-term effect of these drugs are that we are now being given for bi-polar disorder, for attention deficit disorder, for depression or for anxiety; or even if they are really doing us more harm than good? Do you know how doctors today are becoming more and more controlled and subverted by the pharmaceutical industry? Are unwanted behavior and unwanted feelings like anxiety and depression diseases that can be cured by drugs? If you think they are, please run as fast as you can and get this book. It could save your life.

Summary: Thomas Szasz Does It Again
Rating: 5

Dr. Szasz, now 81 years old, has done it again: explained what’s going on in the minds of psychiatrists and their adulators from the Surgeon General on down. And why.

For example, he tells us how doctors are really paid and explains the corrupting effect of third party reimbursement by DRG (Diagnosis Related Groups)on the most important and the kindest thing any doctor can do: make an accurate diagnosis.

There are new insights, new quotes and the usual entertaining anecdotes and fastidious footnotes.

Psychiatric obscurantism is impacting every American every time he or she is misinformed: "Depression is a disease like diabetes - ask your Doctor about…." And that’s just TV.

What kills me is how the parrots of psychobaffle preen themselves on their courage at having broken through the mind body barrier - as if obliterating one of childhood’s most important lessons - that thinking doesn’t make it so - is an accomplishment to squawk over: "Look Mom, I can fly."

How dumb can we get? Read this book and find out. The bamboozlement of Mental Health already is to the 21st Century what the propaganda of Communism and National Socialism were to the 20th. Immunize yourself now.

Dr. Szasz has been one of the clearest thinkers and writers for 50 years and this book is another brilliant facet to the immense diamond which is his life’s work.

Review
Conceiving an up-to-date pharmaceutical biotechnology textbook that trains next-generation pharmacy students, as well as updating pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists … is a formidable challenge, and one which the editors … have accomplished to a high standard … . … [Many chapters] contain industrial case-studies of blockbuster drugs, thus giving this textbook an industrial scope that is difficult to find elsewhere. All the chapters are easy to read and well illustrated to aid understanding of the interdisciplinary content. Each chapter is authored by experts in the field and contains a good introductory section and an in-depth discussion of each topic.
- Drug Discovery Today, Vol. 8, No. 17, Sept. 2003

Publication Date: 1999-09

ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781559501828

Product Description:

For nearly 20 years now I have been training champions, the champions of the field of clandestine chemistry. This book is their training ground.

I cover virtually every possible method of making that "food of the God’s" - meth along with how to make it from commonplace materials. I also give coverage of the history of this field, so that newcomers can quickly feel like old pros.

Beyond that, I also supply news inserts with the books so that the latest patents don’t leave you in the dust in this rapidly evolving field. This is the place to get up to speed and up to date in this hot area of study.

Summary: Needs more work
Rating: 2

I think the book lacked proper illustrations. In one instance the author refers to a black and white sketch when he says "Making a claisen adapter, as shown in figure 5, is self explanatory". It looks like there is a cork on one end but what material is the rest made of? When working with chemicals, the material your equiptment is made of can be crucial or lifesaving. The author often gets sidetracked with different versions of a recipe. Maybe a different edition would be better?

Summary: Can’t Find Book Read This
Rating: 5

This is a great book that is a little inaccessible to newby chemists, but it’s about as simple as the process can be explained. And if you can’t understand it you’re liable to blow yourself up so I would try something else, theoretically speaking. Since Amazon wont sell this I would direct all interested parties to the Loompanics Unlimited catalog. That’s a great catalog in general, and it sells the most updated edition of this book plus others by the author. It also has several other great books. Cheers.

Summary: Secrets of Methamphetamine Manufacture: Including Recipes for Mda, Ecstasy, and Other Psychedelic Amphetamines
Rating: 3

while the info is really in this book, it is very hard to read an I feel could be written in more of a layman’s term.

Summary: Study hard…
Rating: 5

Finally a resource for the "cooks" out there who know absolutely nothing about what they are doing and end up blowing up their house, or worse yet, their children. "Joe Blow" next door decides he’s gonna make some meth and then the cash will roll in, ignoring the fact that the chemicals he’s bringing into the neighborhood could very well kill. Maybe, just maybe, this book can cut the casualties of production.

This is a wonderful compilation of valuable information by one the great american pioneers of our time! Uncle Fester is the reigning king of the underground enthusiast!

Title: Research Strategies for Assessing Adverse Events Associated with Vaccines
Authors: Kathleen R. Stratton, Cynthia J. Howe, Richard B. Johnston(eds.)
Publisher: National Academy Press
Date: 1994
Pages: 30

In sum, there was agreement that more consideration needs to be given
to the use and utility of case reports, including those submitted to passive
surveillance systems, that the role of clinical trials (including postmarketing
studies) is limited due to frequent lack of randomization and small sample
size, and that LLDBs show great but not unlimited promise. Vaccine safety
must be studied on an ongoing basis and with a variety of tools, including
basic research.

Magic Molecules: How Drugs Work
By Susan Aldridge

Publisher: Cambridge University Press
Number Of Pages: 284
Publication Date: 1998-09-28
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0521584140
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780521584142

Product Description:

We have all been drug users at one time or another. Drugs can be used as medicines, as food additives, for pleasure, and to protect our long-term health. With so many new drugs on the market and an ever-widening definition of what exactly makes a drug a drug, we should all be well informed about the drugs we use–how they work, their benefits, and their risks. This book is a unique guide for the general reader to the drugs of everyday life–from commonly prescribed medicines to recreational drugs (including illicit ones) and food supplements. The author examines how drugs interact with their targets in the body, where drugs come from, how they are developed, and what new kinds of drugs are on the horizon. She reviews all the major pharmaceutical medicines–painkillers, antibiotics, anti-cancer drugs, anti-depressants, heart drugs, tranquilizers, and hormones. Much more than a consumer handbook, this volume conveys the fascinating science behind drugs in an easily accessible way.

Amazon.com Review:

Almost all of us have used medical drugs at some point to help make us well, or at least to help us feel better while we endure our illnesses. Yet most of them are mysterious to us, even those that are thoroughly understood by scientists. Susan Aldridge wrote Magic Molecules: How Drugs Work as a guide for scientifically literate consumers to help us understand these chemicals and their effects on our bodies. Looking at painkillers, antibiotics, cancer therapies, "smart drugs," and many others, she uses clear, plain language and illustrations to describe the mechanisms of these medications.

But Magic Molecules is no encyclopedia. Aldridge includes fascinating discussions of related topics such as viral diseases, clinical trials, and the history of drug use, interwoven with her descriptions of the drugs we use each day. How does ibuprofen differ from aspirin? Why does chemotherapy make us sick? How come pregnant women have to be so careful with their medications? These questions and more are answered in this book that combines the usefulness of a reference text with the delightful charm of the best scientific works. –Rob Lightner

Summary: A review of Magic Molecules
Rating: 4

This book is to be commended for its, clarity of thought ,and flowing prose in its treatment of a subject both broad in scope ,and complex in nature. The Author is able to give the reader an accessible overview of the of the most common diseases affecting mankind, and the of the pharmacological approaches used to combat these illnesses in a manner that deftly maneuvers in level from the molecular to the practical. The only reason that I didn’t give this book 5 stars is because that I reserve such a rating in this genre for a masterpiece such as "Creating Mind:How the Brain Works"

Transporters as Targets for Drugs (Topics in Medicinal Chemistry)
By Susan Napier, Matilda Bingham

Publisher: Springer
Number Of Pages: 253
Publication Date: 2009-06-01
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 3540879110
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9783540879114

Product Description:

Transporters are proteins which span the plasma membrane and regulate the traffic of small molecules in and out of the cell. Transporters play a particularly important role in chemical signalling between neurons in the CNS, where they act to control the concentration of neurotransmitters in the synapse. The majority of transporters which are actively being pursued as targets for drug discovery are CNS located and this reflects the history of the field which began with the tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) over half a century ago. The use of transporter inhibition to regulate the synaptic concentrations of key neurotransmitters is an established approach in the discovery of psychiatric medications. This volume reviews advances in the field of transporters as targets for drug discovery in the last 10 years. The volume will be of interest to scientists engaged in drug research in the pharmaceutical industry, biotech and academia. Following an overview chapter, seven chapters written by leading experts in their area reflect a range of topics pertinent to the transporter field. General topics include recent advances in the structural biology of transporters and its impact on potential structure based drug design and the design of ligands for Positron Emission Tomography and the importance of molecular imaging in understanding early clinical data. Medicinal chemistry approaches are described outlining the discovery of selective serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine reuptake inhibitors, current efforts towards the discovery of mixed re-uptake inhibitors with varied ‘flavours’ of monoamine inhibition, advances in the development of inhibitors for the glycine transporter and the discovery of subtype selective EAAT inhibitors. In addition to being an interesting read, the reader will receive a critical overview of progress made in this rapidly developing field.

Binding: Hardcover

For almost a decade, quantitative NMR spectroscopy (qNMR) has been established as valuable tool in drug analysis. In all disciplines, i. e. drug identification, impurity profiling and assay, qNMR can be utilized.
Separation techniques such as high performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, super fluid chromatography and capillary electrophoresis techniques, govern the purity evaluation of drugs. However, these techniques are not always able to solve the analytical problems often resulting in insufficient methods. Nevertheless such methods find their way into international pharmacopoeias. Thus, the aim of the book is to describe the possibilities of qNMR in pharmaceutical analysis.
Beside the introduction to the physical fundamentals and techniques the principles of the application in drug analysis are described: quality evaluation of drugs, polymer characterization, natural products and corresponding reference compounds, metabolism, and solid phase NMR spectroscopy for the characterization drug substances, e.g. the water content, polymorphism, and drug formulations, e.g. tablets, powders. This part is accompanied by more special chapters dealing with representative examples. They give more detailed information by means of concrete examples.

combines theory, techniques, and concrete applicationsall of which closely resemble the laboratory experience
considers international pharmacopoeias, addressing the concern for licensing
features the work of academics and researchers, appealing to a broad readership

Product Description:

The need for a vaccine against HIV is obvious, but the development of an effective vaccine has met with frustrations. The HIV envelope glycoproteins, residing in the viral membrane, are the sole viral proteins exposed on the outside of virus particles and are therefore major targets for vaccine design. The first part of this thesis describes research aimed at understanding the folding and function of the HIV-1 envelope glycoproteins and their properties underlying the effective viral immune evasion. The second part of the thesis describes the design of modifications of the envelope glycoproteins that should improve their properties as vaccine antigens.

Proposed by Dr Mark Walport (Wellcome Trust) this Seminar examined the discovery, use and impact of platinum salts as chemotherapy agents for cancer. Organized with the assistance of Professor Paul Andrews (St George’s Hospital Medical School) and Dr Tony Woods (Wellcome Trust) and chaired by Professor Sir Kenneth Calman (Durham) the Seminar discussed the serendipitous emergence of platinum salts as widely used anticancer agents from a chance observation in a microbiology laboratory; through their use especially for the treatment of previously untreatable solid tumours such as those of the testes and ovary; and their significance in the development of antiemetic agents for chemotherapy patients. Participants included chemists, oncologists, and academic and industrial pharmacologists who devised, in particular, the 5HT3 receptor antagonists.

Participants included: Professor Kenneth Bagshawe, Dr Penelope Brock, Professor Hilary Calvert, Professor David Grahame-Smith, Professor Richard Gralla, Professor Kenneth Harrap, Dr James Hoeschele, Professor Ian Judson, Mr Wesley Miner, Professor Robert Naylor, Mrs Brenda Reynolds, Dr John Rudd, Dr Gareth Sanger, Dr David Tattersall, Professor Andrew Thomson, Professor Robert Williams and Dr Eve Wiltshaw.

The history of clinical pharmacology in the UK over the last half of the twentieth century is largely untold. Many important new drugs were developed and brought to market in the 1950s and 1960s ensuring the need for more systematic knowledge of drug effects in humans and also providing new career opportunities in teaching, research and practice. The 30th anniversary of the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology in 2004 and the 75th anniversary of the British Pharmacological Society in 2006 had prompted reflections from practicing clinical pharmacologists. It was timely, therefore, to bring together clinical pharmacologists and others who have shaped the discipline, to promote historical analysis and debate. Chaired by Professor Rod Flower, the meeting considered such questions as: What was/is clinical pharmacology? Which were the main centres of influence? Who and what were the main drivers? Who became clinical pharmacologists and why? What was the significance of specialized societies, meetings and journals?

Participants: Dr Stuart Anderson, Dr Jeffrey Aronson, Professor David Barnett, Dr Linda Beeley, Professor Sir James Black, Professor Morris Brown, Professor Mark Caulfield, Sir Iain Chalmers, Professor Donald Davies, Professor Robin Ferner, Dr Arthur Fowle, Professor Sir Charles George, Professor David Gordon, Professor David Grahame-Smith, Dr Andrew Herxheimer, Dr Kenneth Hunter, Professor Trevor Jones, Professor Desmond Laurence, Professor Denis McDevitt, Professor Walter Nimmo, Professor Michael Orme, Dr Anthony Peck, Professor Laurie Prescott, Professor Brian Prichard, Professor John Reid, Professor James Ritter, Professor Philip Routledge, Professor TilliTansey, Professor Geoffrey Tucker, Professor Patrick Vallance, Professor Duncan Vere, Professor Owen Wade, Professor David Webb and Professor Frank Woods.

Clinical pharmacology in the UK in the 1950s and 1960s was an exciting profession. Many important new drugs were developed and brought to market and a more systematic knowledge of drug effects in humans was needed, as well as ensuring the safety and efficacy of new and existing drugs, especially following the unexpected problems arising from the use of thalidomide. This Witness Seminar followed an earlier meeting on the history of the general development of clinical pharmacology and focuses on the development of clinical pharmacology in pharmaceutical companies and drug regulation. Professor Rod Flower chaired the meeting of clinical pharmacologists and others who shaped the discipline, which discussed the main centres of influence; the attraction to clinical pharmacologists of working in industry; whether the decline in the number of academic clinical pharmacologists was paralleled in drug companies; what drove drug regulation; and the relationships between companies and regulatory authorities.

Participants included Dr Jeffrey Aronson, Professor Nigel Baber, Sir Alasdair Breckenridge, Sir Iain Chalmers, Professor Joe Collier, Professor Donald Davies, Dr Peter Fletcher, Dr Arthur Fowle, Professor Sir Charles George, Professor David Grahame-Smith, Professor John Griffin, Dr Andrew Herxheimer, Professor Ray Hill, Dr Peter Lewis, Dr Tim Mant, Professor Denis McDevitt, Professor Michael Orme, Dr Anthony Peck, Professor Brian Prichard, Professor Sir Michael Rawlins, Professor John Reid, Professor Philip Routledge, Dr Julian Shelley, Dr Robert Smith, Professor Cameron Swift, Professor Tilli Tansey, Dr Duncan Vere, and the late Professor Owen Wade.

About the Book:
The present compendium on Advanced Practical Medicinal Chemistry is designed specifically to serve as a text-cum-reference book not only intended for the advanced undergraduate and graduate students of Pharmacy specializing in pharmaceutical chemistry but also for the bulk-drug industrial researchers and academics who work intimately with medicinal compounds. It mainly comprises of four comprehensive chapters. First chapter is entirely devoted to Safety in Chemical Laboratory, which is an absolute must for each medicinal chemist. Second chapter is on Drug Synthesis and concentrates on three vital aspects, namely : conceptualization of a synthesis, reaction variants, and stereochemistry. Third chapter exclusively deals with Performing the Reactions and entails the wide range of latest laboratory techniques used in a good chemical laboratory to facilitate synthesis of drugs.

Fourth chapter is particularly focused and earmarked to Synthesis of Medicinal Compounds, and essentially include various cardinal aspects, such as :types of chemical reactions, organic name reactions (ONRs), and selected medicinal compounds. A galaxy of eighty carefully chosen medicinal compounds have been presented in an original unique style comprising of: chemical structure, synonym (s)/chemical name(s) theory chemicals required procedure precautions recrystallization theoretical yield/practical yield physical parameters uses, and questions for viva-voce.

It is hoped that Advanced Practical Medicinal Chemistry would certainly help to bridge existing gap and fill up the long needed vacuum in the synthesis of drugs in pharmaceutical chemistry departments, academics and bulk-drug industries, and may provide the basis for meaningful productive group discussions of synthetic problems on a broader perspective.

Product Description:

Khat is a natural substance that, in the Middle East, is as ubiquitous as coffee in the West. It is hugely popular in some African and Arab populations. But critics contend that it is a seriously addictive stimulant that damages the cardiovascular system. In a groundbreaking study, the authors go behind the veil of the drug, questioning its availability and its affect on its Red Sea producers. Interwoven with case studies from Djibouti to Rome, The Khat Controversy goes deeper to explore contemporary issues relating to globalization, ethnicity and culture. The first study of this contested drug, Khat provides a concise introduction to the issues surrounding Khat usage and suggests how policymakers should address them.

Towards Drugs of the Future: Key Issues in Lead Finding and Lead Optimization - Volume 9 Solvay Pharmaceuticals Conferences
By C.G. Kruse

Publisher: IOS Press

Publication Date: 2009-01-15
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1586039490
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781586039493

Product Description:

The scope of this book is that the pharmaceutical industry must change the way it operates. The editors of this book feel that the current business model is economically unsustainable and incapable to meet expectations of modern society. The number of novel medications in the global industry pipeline is insufficient to suffice demand of the markets, the financial performance of several companies is declining, sales and marketing costs are rising, regulatory constraints are increasingly challenging and overall reputation of industry is tarnishing. Unmet medical needs must be better addressed and tangible benefits need to be exposed in order to be rewarded by healthcare payers. In addition, the focus is shifting from simple treatment of the ill to preventative measures and health management. This volume addresses newest development in synthetic and medicinal chemistry with the emphasis on global challenges. One of the goals is to ensure that new chemistry develops novel technologies in which system biology approach or target approach is computer simulated, testing is performed in silico on rat or human digital models and synthesis of molecules is restricted to intelligent synthesis of treatments based on simulations. Implementation of such new technologies requires the pharmaceutical industry to rethink and adopt the current business model in order to contribute value to the healthcare systems of the future.
