Forensic Chemistry of Substance Misuse: A Guide to Drug Control
By Leslie A. King
Publisher: Royal Society of Chemistry
Number Of Pages: 250
Publication Date: 2009-05-19
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0854041788
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780854041787
Product Description:
This book provides a chemical background to the domestic and international legal controls on drugs of abuse and related substances and includes coverage of ‘designer drugs’ and generic/analogue controls from the US, UK, and New Zealand perspectives.
General chapters cover the recent history of the drug classification debate and a proposal for consolidating a wide range of legal controls on chemical substances. An account is provided of the Early Warning System on ‘New Psychoactive Substances’ in operation in the European Union. Technical and subsidiary material is placed in 20 Appendices, which list controlled substances and cover topics such as: precursor chemicals, related legislation, sentencing guidelines and detailed chemical/pharmacological profiles of the most commonly-abused drugs. There is a glossary and a bibliography, while extensive footnotes support the text and provide references to selected publications and Internet sources.
The book contains a number of unique features, not found in any other single publication:
For the forensic scientist, the book contains a complete list of all drug substances controlled by International law. It explains the chemical-structural definitions and the significance to the legislation of terms such as salt, base, stereoisomer, ester, ether, derivative, homologue and isotope.
For the more general reader, there is an account of the history of domestic, European and International drugs control, the long debate about drug classification, the role of risk assessment and how the legal control of a wide range of harmful chemical substances might be consolidated.
For the criminal lawyer, the book provides a useful adjunct to standard works on case and statute law.

Publisher: Wiley
Number Of Pages: 262
Publication Date: 2007-06-11
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 047005817X
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780470058176
Product Description:
As a result of the expansion in the area of pharmaceutical medicine there is an ever-increasing need for educational resources. The Dictionary of Clinical Trials, Second Edition comprehensively explains the 3000 words and short phrases commonly used when designing, running, analysing and reporting clinical trials.
This book is a quick, pocket reference tool to understand the common and less well-used terms within the discipline of clinical trials, and provides an alternative to the textbooks available. Terms are heavily cross-referenced, which helps the reader to understand how terms fit into the broad picture of clinical trials.
Wide ranging, brief, pragmatic explanations of clinical trial terminology
Scope includes medical, statistical, epidemiological, ethical, regulatory and data management terminology
Thoroughly revised and expanded - increase of 280 terms from First Edition, reference to Cochrane included
From the reviews of the First Edition:
"This invaluable text explains the majority of clinical trial terms, in alphabetical order, that are likely to be found in clinical trial protocols, reports, regulatory guidelines, and published manuscripts… Fully comprehensive - provides definitions of clinical trial terms in one complete volume… Includes extensive use of graphs throughout." LA DOC STI
"…covers a range of subject matter, with emphasis on medical, statistical, epidemiological and ethical terms… a useful adjunct to standard clinical trial texts… a reference source to keep within easy reach." TALANTA
The Dictionary of Clinical Trials, Second Edition is a ‘must-have’ for all pharmaceutical companies who conduct a lot of clinical trials, in all or one therapeutic area. The book is also of interest for public health and health science workers, and for contract research organisations and departments of medicine, where medics are involved with clinical trials.
Summary: Skimpy, minimalist definitions and overpriced
Rating: 1
This is the sort of book that one might expect to receive as a "freebee" from a drug company representative. For $…, it is very overpriced. Considering that for around the same amount of money, one can buy a very thorough medical dictionary, this "book" falls short. Save your money and apply it towards a "real" text.
Summary: I use this every day !
Rating: 5
As a newcomer to the pharmaceutical industry, this book has helped me to understand the jargon that is everyday language for clinical research associates. Explanations are presented simply

Publisher: Springer
Number Of Pages: 602
Publication Date: 2009-07-21
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1441901302
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781441901309
Product Description:
The goal of our efforts in compiling Pharmaceutical Perspectives of Cancer Therapeutic is to produce a comprehensive yet easy-to-follow review of the principles and current approaches in this ever-growing field. With today’s broad research perspective and technology expertise, the knowledge in the field of cancer research and drug development has become a challenge not only for students who are eager to learn, but also for seasoned professionals who are willing to update. The complexity of cancer demands a comprehensive and integrated understanding from both cancer biology and pharmaceuticaldosage forms and drug delivery in order to warrant a successful therapeutic regimen. However, no book to date combinestogether these two aspects, namely the cancer research and the drug design and delivery from an integrated perspective of cancer treatment. Hence, a book that merges the knowledge from these two aspects is greatly desired.
For the purpose of bridging basic research and clinical application, pharmaceutical drug development processes and regulatory issues, drug design and delivery, laboratory and translational experimentation, marketing and postmarketing surveillance,we have invited international experts with a multi-disciplinary background, including scientists and clinicians from both academia and industries in theirrespective fields to contribute to this book. We intend to convey both an introductory understanding and the latest development in the field so that this book can be useful for both novice students and practicing scientists. With a comprehensive and integrated view of cancer therapeutics, we hope that this book will stimulate a deeper understanding and promote interaction in this integrated field for people with diverse expertise and backgrounds who are working on cancer therapeutics.
We have organized this book to cover a wide variety of topics including strategies to suppress tumor angiogenesis and metastasis, overcome multi-drug resistance in cancer, target telomerase and apoptosis pathways;therapeutic approaches to employ monoclonal antibody and cancer vaccines;introduction of new concepts such as cancer stem cells and new technologies such as nanobiotechnology, RNA interference, microRNA, and cancer cell gene profiling. The use of synthetic carriers, such as lipids, polymers and peptides for delivery and targeting of small molecules, proteins and nucleic acids to cancer cells or specific organs in vivo, as well as targeted delivery of macromolecular drugs to cancer cells, are described in detail. In addition, the utilization of imaging in cancer therapeutics, development and utilization of HIF-1 knockout animal models in cancer study, as well as the principles of developing anticancer drugs and designing clinical trials, are also discussed. In summary, this book provides an in-depth review of various aspects of anticancer strategies and drug delivery approaches from different perspectives, including detailed discussion of several clinical trial cases. The book has a wider and more involved focus on cancer therapy with a good balance on diversity. It integrates cancer therapy approaches (both biological- and small compound molecule-based therapy) with drug delivery. By reading this book, not only bench scientists can have an insight for what physicians desire for their clinical use towards cancer treatment, but also physicians will better understand how the approach and drug are developed and therefore will apply the drug more efficiently and accurately in patients. Moreover, this book summarizes current progress and state-of-the-art of cancer therapeutics, while focusing on the novel ideas that are being explored to overcome the existing challenges. We hope that this book will be served as both a refresher and ready-reference, as well as an educational tool, to both new entrants and seasoned researchers.

This book explores the history of pharmacy in France and its relationship to the discipline of chemistry as it emerged at the beginning of the nineteenth century. It argues that an appreciation of the history of pharmacy is essential to a full understanding of the constitution of modern science, in particular the discipline of chemistry. As such, it provides a novel interpretation of the chemical revolution (c. 1770 - 1789) that will, no doubt, generate much debate on the place of the chemical arts in this story, a question that has hitherto lacked sufficient scholarly reflection. Furthermore, the book situates this analysis within the broader context of the French Revolution, from duansci.com arguing that an intimate and direct link can be drawn between the political upheavals and our vision of the chemical revolution. The story of the chemical revolution has usually been told by focusing on the small group of French chemists who championed Lavoisier’s oxygen theory, or else his opponents. Such a perspective emphasises competing theories and interpretations of critical experiments, but neglects the challenging issue of who could be understood as practising chemistry in the eighteenth century. In contrast, this study traces the tradition of pharmacy as a professional pursuit that relied on chemical techniques to prepare medicines, and shows how one of the central elements of the chemical revolution was the more or less conscious disassociation of the new chemistry from this ancient chemical art.

By Paolo Zatta
Publisher: World Scientific Publishing Company
Number Of Pages: 336
Publication Date: 2008-10-15
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 9812778934
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9789812778932
Product Description:
Metallothioneins (MTs) represent a large family of proteins characterized by high heavy metal content (mainly CuII and ZnII) and by an unusual cysteine abundance. They have a powerful protective function in all animal tissues, due most likely to their properties as free radical scavengers protecting against oxidative damage. Moreover, the presence and overexpression of MTs in various pathological conditions, such as metal dyshomeostasis, cell proliferation, neurological disorders, and chemotherapy and radiotherapy resistance, could be used as an important prognostic marker, as a histopathological diagnostic tool, and to follow specific pharmacological treatments.
This important book explores the role of MTs in the field of neurological disorders (brain inflammation, Alzheimer’s and prion diseases, autism, ALS, etc.), cardiology (cardiomyopathy, atherosclerosis), and oncology (melanoma, prostate and breast cancer), through authoritative contributions and a description of basic biochemical information and paradigmatic pathological events.
Contents: Metallothionein in Neurological Disorders; Metallothionein in Oncology; Metallothionein in Cardiopathy; Metallothionein in Hepatology.

Product Description:
The challenges facing large pharmaceutical companies are stark: sales are slowing and research and development costs are rising. There’s an overwhelming need to reduce development costs by as much as 30-40 per cent, whilst at the same time significantly shortening development cycle times. Pharmaceutical spend on outsourcing faces double-digit growth for the next three to five years and yet, if outsourcing is to meet these challenges, new models of collaborative and cooperative working are needed now. "Outsourcing Clinical Development" offers a guide to these new models and to future clinical outsourcing strategy. There is advice at a strategic level on the basis for an outsourcing strategy and how to work with CROs (clinical research outsourcers); geographical issues, such as low-cost environments. There’s also a detailed guide to selecting candidates, and managing the proposal, negotiation and contract process successfully; as well as reviewing the performance of your outsourcing and developing a strategic relationship in the longer term. The pharmaceutical outsourcing function is as complex and as influential a process as the clinical trials themselves. "Outsourcing Clinical Development", with a powerful mix of perceptive insight from leading lights in the industry, advice on long-term strategic direction and tools for immediate help is a must-have read for pharmaceutical companies and the CROs that support them.

Forecasting for the Pharmaceutical Industry: Models for New Product And In-market Forecasting And How to Use Them
By Arthur G., Ph.D. Cook
Publisher: Gower Publishing Company
Number Of Pages: 141
Publication Date: 2006-11-18
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0566086751
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780566086755
Product Description:
In virtually every decision, a pharmaceutical executive considers some type of forecast. This process of predicting the future is crucial to many aspects of the company - from next month’s production schedule, to market estimates for drugs in the next decade. The pharmaceutical forecaster needs to strike a delicate balance between over-engineering the forecast - including rafts of data and complex ‘black box’ equations that few stakeholders understand and even fewer buy into - and an overly simplistic approach that relies too heavily on anecdotal information and opinion. Art Cook’s highly pragmatic guide explains the basis of a successful balanced forecast for products in development as well as currently marketed products. The author explores the pharmaceutical forecasting process; the varied tools and methods for new product and in-market forecasting; how they can be used to communicate market dynamics to the various stakeholders; and the strengths and weaknesses of different forecast approaches. The text is liberally illustrated with tables, diagrams and examples. The final extended case study provides the reader with an opportunity to test out their knowledge. "Forecasting for the Pharmaceutical Industry" is a definitive guide for forecasters as well as the multitude of decision makers and executives who rely on forecasts in their decision making.
Summary: Too simple
Rating: 2
If you do not know anything about forecasting techniques this is your book. The author give us a big picture about the main steps in the pharmaceutical industry forecasting. How ever if you already took an econometrics course or a business forecasting course this book it is not going to help you.
Summary: Nicely covers the broad areas of forecasting
Rating: 3
Nicely covers the broad areas of forecasting, and thats just what it does. It does not get in to the details. So if you are someone who wants to brush your knowledge then this is for you, but if you are looking to learn new methods then maybe you may want to look at some other options.

ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1603272666

Product Description:
Chemokines are a superfamily of low molecular weight cytokines that were initially described based on their ability to induce the directed migration of leukocytes to sites of inflammation or injury. In humans, there are approximately 45 chemokines that bind to 19 G-protein-coupled receptors. In addition to mediating cellular migration, chemokines have now been shown to affect many cellular functions including survival, adhesion, invasion, proliferation, and to regulate circulating chemokine levels. Although chemokine receptors were first described on leukocytes, it is now appreciated that chemokine receptors are also expressed by many other cells including endothelial and epithelial cells.
Since the first description of chemokine receptors on malignant cells in 2001, an extensive literature has developed describing the expression and function of chemokine receptors in many malignancies. These studies support the initial hypothesis that malignant cells use chemokine receptors to migrate to distant sites of ligand expression and that expression of certain receptors is associated with a poor prognosis. It has also become apparent that malignancies of different tissues may use a diverse profile of chemokine receptors and that the same receptor may mediate metastasis to different sites in tumors of different histological origins. Receptor function may also maintain survival and expansion of the primary tumor.

Introduction:
Herbs and spices play a pivotal role in the day-to-day life of mankind as important
flavouring agents in foods, beverages and pharmaceuticals and also as ingredients in
perfumes and cosmetics. The manufacturers of foods, beverages, cosmetics and
pharmaceuticals are responding to the growing wave of consumer resistance and
legislative limitations set for products containing chemical additives. Spices as sources
of natural colours and flavours present welcome opportunities in the international
market. The nutritional, antioxidant, antimicrobial and medicinal properties of spices
also have widespread applications.

Book Description:
This work brigdges the compartmentalized undergraduate organic and biochemistry and biology subjects to the pharmacology and the clinical areas a modern pharmacy practice requires. The changes and constantly increasing responsibilities of today’s pharmacist have dictated a restructuring of the pharmacy curriculum, including individual course content. This book reflects and addresses these developments. This is a well-written work that covers most major areas of pharmaceutical research. The text is presented in a logical and concise fashion being divided into chapters based upon therapeutic topic. This makes the work very useful for teaching a course in medicinal chemistry since therapeutic areas can be separately covered without having to make use of the entire book which overall contains a tremendous amount of information. This book is a significant contribution to understanding what medicinal chemistry is and how this science is used to develop new therapeutic agents.

Summary: minimal coverage of medicinal chemistry

Anyone wishing a more comprehensive treatment should utilize Foye’s Medicinal Chemistry or Goodman and Gillmans work.
Summary: Almost Perfect!
Rating: 4
This book is very good introduction in the major aspects of the chemistry of the drugs. It explains with good schemes the reactions of drugs and others important mechanisms. But in my opinion it is necessary a chapter to explains the analytical methods that are being used nowadays in this field like HPLC,NMR,Mass spectroscopy and so on, for searching the drugs process thru the living system.

Recent progress in high-throughput screening, combinatorial chemistry and molecular biology has radically changed the approach to drug discovery in the pharmaceutical industry. New challenges in synthesis result in new analytical methods. At present, typically 100,000 to one million molecules have to be tested within a short period and, therefore, highly effective screening methods are necessary for today’s researchers - preparing and characterizing one compound after another belongs to the past. Intelligent, computer-based search agents are needed and "virtual screening" provides solutions to many problems. Such screening comprises innovative computational techniques designed to turn raw data into valuable chemical information and to assist in extracting the relevant molecular features.
This handbook is unique in bringing together the various efforts in the field of virtual screening to provide the necessary methodological framework for more effective research. Leading experts give a thorough introduction to the state of the art along with a critical assessment of both successful applications and drawbacks. The information collated here will be indispensable for experienced scientists, as well as novices, working in medicinal chemistry and related disciplines

This classic of clandestine chemistry is back in all its glory in a 7th edition. Virtually every possible way to make meth is covered in detail, with some emphasis given to the popular methods starting with decongestant pills. Hardware store sources of many of the required chemicals are detailed along with low profile methods of obtaining other needed ingredients. I also include an update sheet with the book to keep it up to date in this rapidy changing field.
Summary: "The Secrets of How To Kill Yourself"
Rating: 1
Maybe some day the author of this book will hit rock bottom and find himself ripping out his decaying teeth with a pair of channel locks in the back shed of his trailer and realize how he has completely wasted his life and many of the other lives that this sham of a book has come in contact with.
Summary: Interesting for the curious, but way too advanced for anyone without chemist experience
Rating: 3
I just got the book because I was curious about how it was made (I’m curious about a lot of things that I would never actually make). The new TV series ‘Breaking Bad’ is what piqued my curiosity (a great show, by the way).
Now, just to give you an idea what you’d be getting here if you order this book, let me give you some info on me… I have an IQ of 130, and graduated with a 4.0 from college many years ago (electronics major), and currently work in computer security for a extremely large international company. I aced college-prep chemistry in high school, but did not take any in college.
I could follow enough of this book to satisfy my general curiosity, but there’s no way I could actually make the stuff from reading this book alone (even if I’d wanted). It would definitely take some college level chemistry to follow the book well enough to actually make the stuff without killing yourself. (There are some safety things not mentioned in this book, that are assumed anyone with college chemistry should know… thangs that could literally kill you if you don’t know).
Thus my 3 star averaged rating….
It is ‘great’ if you have a chemistry background… ‘good’ if you are very smart and just curious (but no chemistry background)…. and ‘poor’ if you are a layperson thinking this book will help you cook up something illegal.
Summary: very professional, easy to follow
Rating: 5
If you dont have at least a year of organic chem to your name, or are looking for a quick recipe, dont buy this book. It wont be of any use to you. As for myself, I am a chemistry major and am currently in the midst of my third year of organic chemistry. I find this book easy to follow, all of the procedures in this book that I have preformed worked nicely, and produced product of the highest quality. There are a few unforeseen events that will occur in the labwork, but are easily sidestepped by a good chemist. Most, or all of the lab equipment can be purchased on ebay for very reasonable prices; he also shows you how to manufacture all of your starting materials that would otherwise be almost impossible to purchase. Fester also shows you how to remove from you dope-the pollutants that ruin the finer aspects of methamphetamine. If you dont want to spend months going through the journal of the american chemical society, you should buy this book, which is basically a compilation and expansion of these journals. I highly recommend this book to the experienced dope cook that wants to feel what it’s like to pump out his first 400 gram batch of high quality drugs
Summary: Great info
Rating: 5
This book is full of great info if you want to spend large amounts of time in prison and ruin peoples lives with addictive poison.
Summary: DISAPPOINTED
Rating: 1
I was a bit disappointed with the content of this manual. I thought that it would have given me instructions and recipes in layman terms. These book is designed only chemist, and the trained professional chemist at that.
I work for a drug rehab center in the Virgin Islands and I want my patients to actually see what caustic items go into their systems when they use this stuff

For nearly 20 years now I have been training champions, the champions of the field of clandestine chemistry. This book is their training ground.
I cover virtually every possible method of making that "food of the God’s" - meth along with how to make it from commonplace materials. I also give coverage of the history of this field, so that newcomers can quickly feel like old pros.
Beyond that, I also supply news inserts with the books so that the latest patents don’t leave you in the dust in this rapidly evolving field. This is the place to get up to speed and up to date in this hot area of study.

Summary: Needs more work
Rating: 2
I think the book lacked proper illustrations. In one instance the author refers to a black and white sketch when he says "Making a claisen adapter, as shown in figure 5, is self explanatory". It looks like there is a cork on one end but what material is the rest made of? When working with chemicals, the material your equiptment is made of can be crucial or lifesaving. The author often gets sidetracked with different versions of a recipe. Maybe a different edition would be better?
Summary: Can’t Find Book Read This
Rating: 5
This is a great book that is a little inaccessible to newby chemists, but it’s about as simple as the process can be explained. And if you can’t understand it you’re liable to blow yourself up so I would try something else, theoretically speaking. Since Amazon wont sell this I would direct all interested parties to the Loompanics Unlimited catalog. That’s a great catalog in general, and it sells the most updated edition of this book plus others by the author. It also has several other great books. Cheers.

while the info is really in this book, it is very hard to read an I feel could be written in more of a layman’s term.
Summary: Study hard…
Rating: 5
Finally a resource for the "cooks" out there who know absolutely nothing about what they are doing and end up blowing up their house, or worse yet, their children. "Joe Blow" next door decides he’s gonna make some meth and then the cash will roll in, ignoring the fact that the chemicals he’s bringing into the neighborhood could very well kill. Maybe, just maybe, this book can cut the casualties of production.

Product Description:
Today’s health care professionals are increasingly confronted with patients who are using herbal supplements to treat various conditions. Providing an authoritative introduction to botanical medicine for these professionals, this book combines the various scientific fields of herbal medicine, phytomedicine, and pharmacognosy with the modern clinical trials that support the rationale for using plant products in health care. This third edition features new information on herb-drug interactions as well as on diabetes, migraine headaches and the common cold, and flu. With updated references, the text presents the latest organic chemical reporting, including nomenclature, and plant taxonomy.
Summary: A "must" for all herbal remedies reference collections.
Rating: 5
Tyler’s Herbs of Choice provides an important treatise on the therapeutic use of phytomedicinals (herbal remedies) and provide important information on the most effective herbs, what they do, how they work. This is not for the casual reader: technical medical descriptions of common conditions and treatments cover details doctors will need to know and provide explanations of how the herbs interact with the body, and what constitutes acceptable levels of dosage.
Summary: An old school viewpoint?
Rating: 3
Written by two pharmacognosists at Perdue University, this book is an update to the original volume in 1994, describing the safe use of the most widely available medicinal herbs. They address recent developments in the use of herbal medicines in a manner that is easy to read and without unnecessary jargon. They include some updated references for most plants, encompassing the clinical literature, known chemical constituents, and the history of their use. Introductory essays describe the basic principles of herbal medicine and problems that the regulatory authorities have had in attempting to deal with these products, especially since the passage of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). The chapters are arranged by general therapeutic indication and discuss the herbs used to treat various ailments and their reported efficacy based on clinical or preclinical results.
One obvious distinction of the book is the clear message that classical pharmacognosy is the only valid scientific viewpoint. There is still in this updated edition, the strong notion that there is a magic bullet within each plant that we only need identify and standardize. But this is seldom as straightforward as it may appear. For example, in the basic principles section there is praise of standardized preparations of hypericum, yet no acknowledgment that standardization based on hypericin is probably not useful, since it is no longer believed to be essential for the antidepressant activity of St. John’s Wort. Standardization and pharmacology of the currently favored constituent, hyperforin, was not mentioned. Publication in a scientific journal does not make a particular finding (e.g. hypericin inhibition of MAO) a "fact." Subsequent studies showed no MAO inhibition with pure hypericin. Conclusions and extrapolations drawn from results of in vitro studies are based on the conventional wisdom, which is often incorrect. While proposing a mechanism of action is a worthy goal, it must be remembered that true drug mechanisms (even the synthetic ones) are still beyond our medical understanding in most cases, particularly for psychotherapeutic medications. For example, while SSRI’s are known to act by blocking reuptake of serotonin, the connection between serotonin uptake and antidepressant action still remote.
Also mentioned as "pseudoscience" is the notion that whole herbs are more effective than their isolated active constituents. The basic principles section states that for every example in support of this statement that there is at least one denying it. While a 50:50 ratio hardly seems in itself a reasonable criterion for pseudoscience, I think one would be hard pressed to give one example of constituents being more effective than the whole herb for every example of the inverse. While I completely agree that hyperbole and sometimes outright fabrication are seen in the marketing of herbals, we shouldn’t be too quick to categorically discount what herbal practitioners have been saying for so long, but rather to weight them with the same standards as ideas that the "scientists" have generated.
Summary: Wait for the paperback or use the older version
Rating: 3
I have been waiting for an update of this classic book. However, for most health care professionals or herb users, I don’t feel the $40 price tag makes this book worth it. Wait for the paperback of this updated version or get the paperback 1994 version.

Derek T. O’Hagan and a team of expert vaccinologists and pharmacologists thoroughly describe the preparation, characterization, and evaluation of a wide range of alternative vaccine adjuvants for use in preclinical studies. Each chapter carefully reviews a single adjuvant, and suggests why a specific adjuvant might be preferred for a given antigen, depending on what type of immune response is desired. Alternate adjuvant choices are also presented so that researchers can choose those most efficacious for their specific purpose. Comprehensive and highly practical, Vaccine Adjuvants: Preparation Methods and Research Protocols provides an effective guide to making and using vaccine adjuvants. By closely following directions from the book, today’s researchers will be able optimally to induce specific immune responses against different types of antigens and to selectively manipulate the immune response in a favorable way.

Inside Dope: How Drugs Are the Biggest Threat to Sports, Why You Should Care, and What Can Be Done About Them
By Richard W. Pound
Publisher: Wiley
Number Of Pages: 248
Publication Date: 2006-09-29

ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780470837337
Product Description:
An IOC insider speaks out on creating a drug-free sports culture
With doping charges leveled at athletes in baseball, cycling, and in the Olympics, cheating has, to many onlookers, become the norm in pro sports. With implications far beyond the sports arena, Inside Dope examines the genesis of doping in sports as well as in the world of doctors and trainers; drug testing and the battle to stay ahead of users; drug companies and big business; and the role of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) as watchdog. Written by a former Olympian, an IOC official, and a passionate advocate of fair play in sports, this eye-opening book takes a candid look at testing standards and the future of doping and sports and the larger issue of how doping affects the public perception of athletes.
Summary: Bad
Rating: 1
Little insight, boring writing and a lack of any intelligible point. Save your money on this overpriced collection of paper.
Summary: Inside Dope: Not even close
Rating: 1
If you are interested in the wide-spread doping in professional (and amateur?) cycling, Pound’s book doesn’t even come close to an account that will inform, save for one point. Pound raises, albeit indirectly, the question for all professional atheletes: if one is to perform in order to win, and winning is the only consideration, then one has to chose to dope or run clean. Pound spends about 80% of the book sidestepping that issue while pontificating and lecturing from psuedo-case studies that are not really relevant to the cycling issues. The remaining 20% of the book was a lecture from an all-knowing elder who has never participated in cycling or running at a high level of competition: don’t do this, don’t do this, etc. I was interested in what Pound had to say at the beginning, but by the end I felt this book was a waste of time and money. I think Pound should stick to the WADA issues that could actually improve testing and oversight of all sport, specifically cycling.

LSD, my problem child

LSD, my problem child
By Albert Hofmann
Publisher: McGraw-Hill
Number Of Pages: 209
Publication Date: 1980
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0070293252
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780070293250
Product Description:
This is the story of LSD told by a concerned yet hopeful father, organic chemist Albert Hofmann. He traces LSD’s path from a promising psychiatric research medicine to a recreational drug sparking hysteria and prohibition.
We follow Dr. Hofmann’s trek across Mexico to discover sacred plants related to LSD, and listen in as he corresponds with other notable figures about his remarkable discovery.
Underlying it all is Dr. Hofmann’s powerful conclusion that mystical experience may be our planet’s best hope for survival. Whether induced by LSD, meditation, or arising spontaneously, such experiences help us to comprehend "the wonder, the mystery of the divine‹in the microcosm of the atom, in the macrocosm of the spiral nebula, in the seeds of plants, in the body and soul of people."
More than sixty years after the birth of Albert Hofmann’s problem child, his vision of its true potential is more relevant, and more needed, than ever.
Summary: Enlightening but not Riveting
Rating: 3
While this book does share some of the background on the development of LSD and investigations into other natural physchedelics by Hofmann et.al., the book is as eloquent as you would expect a translated book originally written by a German chemist. Hofmann also shares his and many other peoples’ personal trials with LSD, and delves into the spiritual mysticism of the drug. I would recommend it for the more science-minded individuals.
Summary: a third way through book. fascinating. RIP Albert
Rating: 5
Clears up a lot of the misconceptions. Got book through drug legalization lobby I give money to. What a Brilliant guy!!
Summary: The Ultimate Perscription
Rating: 5
There are a few books in the world that are touchstones for our psyches. This is one of them. It should be read by all young people coming of age, regardless of their position on the use of mind altering substances. It should be re-read every 10 years or so as they mature and their world view evolves. For those experienced with exploring internal frontiers it should be checked in with every 10 years or so as well. In just 209 pages of straight forward text some of the fundamental first principles of reality, and our relationship to it, are spilled out onto us without the need for preaching, screeching, moralizing, or deciphering obscure philosophical and scientific texts.
It should be read by every political leader in the world, and you won’t find too many people who’d disagree with that!
Summary: Who Better?
Rating: 5
I first read this book when it was first published, maybe 25 years ago. The book still holds up well all these years later, as it is a calm, rational history from the Center of the Cyclone (if I might borrow the title from Dr. John Lilly). Clearly, Dr. Hoffman was no stranger to realms of what many these days call entheogens, often experimenting himself with other "new" substances he discovered in other organic plants that found their way to him as a result of his monumental inadvertant destiny in "discovering" LSD. While some of the other substances he writes on were very new at the time, and therefore might read a little dated, on the whole, there is no one better qualified or in a better position to tackle such a significant topic.
Summary: problem children can do great things
Rating: 5
an elegant and substantive discourse on the curious ways in which science has coalesced with spirituality through the last several decades. This man’s mind is truly unique and his monumental discoveries, combined with his spectacular longevity and health, command respect.
Publish a great book and give all the proceeds to a worthwhile cause: you cannot go wrong here.

Product Description:
Over the past few years, the focus in interventional cardiology research has centered on reducing restenosis with the use of antiproliferative pharmacological agents. The use of these drugs, hitherto, has failed, most probably because of low active drug levels at the target site. This problem led to the development of local drug delivery using stents, since they can serve as a reservoir for local drug administration and are in immediate contract with the coronary artery wall, thus ensuring maximum delivery of the pharmacological agent. Drug-eluting stents provide an entirely new spectrum of potential therapies for restenosis. Handbook of Drug-Eluting Stents, under the editorial direction of Patrick Serruys, one of the world’s leading interventional cardiologists, and Tony Gershlick, a pioneer in the field of drug-eluting stents, provides the reader with up-to-date information on which stents and pharmacological agents in use or about to be launched, the kinetics of the drugs involved, and what the future may hold.
