When I purchased this book, I thought it would be an adaptation of branding techniques to the pharmaceutical products. In fact, it was different than I thought. The book illustrates very clearly and logically the dynamics of the pharmaceutical marketplace from three different perspectives; the ultimate consumer; patient, Doctors adoption of new drugs and the treatment attractiveness of the drug. Walking through the details would open to the reader a whole different perspective about the factors influencing the market shares. It acts as an eye opener, and evaluator, for a variety of marketing strategy that is properly targeted toward increasing market shares. Well, it all comes through explaining how dynamic modeling could be used to forecast new drug performance. For me, as a Market Researcher and Consultant, it would certainly help in providing better insights to our clients.

How does a drug know what to cure, and what to leave alone? In a book that complements his earlier Murder, Magic, and Medicine (1992), Mann tells the story of how drugs–from the earliest chemical preparations to today’s designer prodrugs and engineered viruses–have been developed to treat bacterial infections, viral infections, and cancer. Curing disease, Mann argues, would be relatively easy if it weren’t so necessary that the patient survive the treatment. Drugs that cure diseases but leave patients standing have come in leaps and bounds in recent years, but progress, while swift, can never be steady. Pathogens, for one thing, do not stand still; therefore, to take the obvious example, naive or lazy overuse of antibiotics accelerates the evolution of antibiotic-resistant strains. We are certainly no longer living in a society in which, in Bacon’s famous formulation, "you would call a physician, that is thought good for the cure of the disease you complain of but is unacquainted with your body … and so cure the disease and kill the patient." But neither have we quite mastered the art of making drugs that target and eradicate pathogens and malignancies with the niceness of a "magic bullet." It is a great reference book on applied statistical methods that all professionals working in this field should have on hand. It is by far the best book on stability theory, validations, process controls,(and applied statistics in general) that I have read.
