The cover of Windows XP All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies boasts that it’s “nine books in one. That’s a stretch–it’s really a book about Microsoft Windows XP for novices, with supplementary information about America Online and MSN–but cover claims aside, this book represents a good value for someone new to computing. Woody Leonhard–a respected Windows authority who writes with enough humor to keep things light but not so much as to obscure the facts–begins with how to use a mouse and works all the way through installing printers and setting up a little network in a home or small office. Granted, if you’ve found this page on the Internet you probably don’t need Leonhard’s “how-to-click tutorial, but you may be shopping for someone unfamiliar with Windows. This book is good for such people.
While the nine separate indexes (one at the end of each included “book) will annoy you–the unified one at the back of this book is much easier to find and use–Leonhard’s style will compensate. He’s very good at explaining how to do what Windows XP was meant to do, up to a certain level. Want to add a music file to a Windows Media Player playlist? There’s a procedure for that. Want to cancel AOL because you can’t stand it? He explains how. He does not, however, provide detail on more complicated jobs like setting up a cable modem or dealing with the specific security risk posed by Universal Plug and Play. Overall, this is a nicely written, friendly book that covers Windows XP well, but to a limited depth. –David Wall

Topics covered: Microsoft Windows XP for home users, particularly novices. Windows XP fundamentals (like windows and the mouse pointer), customization, Internet tools (including Outlook Express and Internet Explorer), America Online (AOL), Microsoft Network (MSN), printers, small networks, and Internet connectivity are all addressed. –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Ferdinand van der Heijden, Robert Duin, Dick de Ridder, David M. J. Tax , “Classification, Parameter Estimation and State Estimation: An Engineering Approach Using MATLAB”
    Wiley (November 19, 2004) | ISBN: 0470090138 | 440 pages | PDF | 6 Mb

Classification, Parameter Estimation and State Estimation is a practical guide for data analysts and designers of measurement systems and postgraduates students that are interested in advanced measurement systems using MATLAB. ‘Prtools’ is a powerful MATLAB toolbox for pattern recognition and is written and owned by one of the co-authors, B. Duin of the Delft University of Technology.

After an introductory chapter, the book provides the theoretical construction for classification, estimation and state estimation. The book also deals with the skills required to bring the theoretical concepts to practical systems, and how to evaluate these systems. Together with the many examples in the chapters, the book is accompanied by a MATLAB toolbox for pattern recognition and classification. The appendix provides the necessary documentation for this toolbox as well as an overview of the most useful functions from these toolboxes. With its integrated and unified approach to classification, parameter estimation and state estimation, this book is a suitable practical supplement in existing university courses in pattern classification, optimal estimation and data analysis.

    Bernard Carr, Universe or Multiverse?
    Cambridge University Press | ISBN 0521848411 | 2007 | PDF | 1 MB | 519 pages

Recent developments in cosmology and particle physics, such as the string landscape picture, have led to the remarkable realization that our universe - rather than being unique - could be just one of many universes. The multiverse proposal helps to explain the origin of the universe and some of its observational features. Since the physical constants can be different in other universes, the fine-tunings which appear necessary for the emergence of life may also be explained.

Nevertheless, many physicists remain uncomfortable with the multiverse proposal, since it is highly speculative and perhaps untestable. In this volume, a number of active and eminent researchers in the field - mainly cosmologists and particle physicists but also some philosophers - address these issues and describe recent developments. The articles represent the full spectrum of views, providing for the first time an overview of the subject.

Addressing an important aspect of social communication for people with Asperger Syndrome, who use direct, precise language and ‘take things literally’, this dictionary of idiomatic expressions aims to dispel any confusion that arises from the misinterpretation of language. This book provides explanations of over 5,000 idiomatic expressions plus a guide to their politeness level. Each expression is accompanied by a clear explanation of its meaning and when and how it might be used. The expressions are taken from American and British English, with some Australian expressions included as well. Although the book is primarily intended for people with Asperger Syndrome, it will be useful for anyone who finds problems understanding idiomatic and colloquial English.

William Connell, Society and Individual in Renaissance Florence
    University of California Press | ISBN 0520232542 | 2002 | PDF | 2 MB | 470 pages

Renaissance Florence has often been described as the birthplace of modern individualism, as reflected in the individual genius of its great artists, scholars, and statesmen. The historical research of recent decades has instead shown that Florentines during the Renaissance remained enmeshed in relationships of family, neighborhood, guild, patronage, and religion that, from a twenty-first-century perspective, greatly limited the scope of individual thought and action. The sixteen essays in this volume expand the groundbreaking work of Gene Brucker, the historian in recent decades who has been most responsible for the discovery and exploration of these pre-modern qualities of the Florentine Renaissance.

Exploring new approaches to the social world of Florentines during this fascinating era, the essays are arranged in three groups. The first deals with the exceptionally resilient and homogenous Florentine merchant elite, the true protagonist of much of Florentine history. The second considers Florentine religion and Florence’s turbulent relations with the Church. The last group of essays looks at criminals, expatriates, and other outsiders to Florentine society.

Alan Burns, Andy Wellings, “Concurrent and Real-Time Programming in Ada”
    Cambridge University Press; 3Rev Ed edition (July 16, 2007) | ISBN: 0521866979 | 476 pages | PDF | 1,6 mb

Ada is the only ISO-standard, object-oriented, concurrent, real-time programming language. It is intended for use in large, long-lived applications where reliability and efficiency are essential, particularly real-time and embedded systems. In this book, Alan Burns and Andy Wellings give a thorough, self-contained account of how the Ada tasking model can be used to construct a wide range of concurrent and real-time systems. This is the only book that focuses on an in-depth discussion of the Ada tasking model. Following on from the authors’ earlier title Concurrency in Ada, this book brings the discussion up to date to include the new Ada 2005 language and the recent advances in real-time programming techniques. It will be of value to software professionals and advanced students of programming alike: indeed every Ada programmer will find it essential reading and a primary reference work that will sit alongside the language reference manual.

Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky
    Bantam Classics (October 15, 1996) | 576 pages | ISBN: 9780553211757 | PDF | 2.14 mb

Crime and Punishment is quite possibly the most widely read 19th century Russian novel in the English-speaking world, and while I might say it’s a tad overrated (for reasons discussed below), there are many good reasons for its exalted status. In case you’re not familiar with the story, it begins with the decision of an impoverished student, Raskolnikov, to rob and kill a pawnbroker, having justified his decision with the argument that her death will do the world more good than harm, both because she cheats her clients and because the money from the robbery will give him the start he needs to become a great man and ultimately benefit humanity. The action of the novel is confined to the day of the murder and a few days following it, during which time, in addition to dealing with a murder investigation led by a clever and intriguing detective who suspects him, Raskolnikov spends time with his mother and sister, who have just come to visit, and with the tragic Marmeladov family, consisting of a drunken father, a consumptive mother, three young children, and an eighteen-year old girl who is forced into prostitution in order to support the family.

Chris, Ph.D. Kurz , “Imagine Homeopathy: A Book of Experiments, Images, and Metaphors ”
    Thieme Medical Publishers (October 2005) | ISBN: 1588903311 | 312 pages | PDF | 4,4 Mb

Since I was intrigued by the title and have been on to homeopathy for over a year, I decided to add this book to my homeopathy library (currently about 20 books and growing -) . Already from the start I could see that this book was going to be different than the others. What’s different is that Chris Kurz explains exactly those topics that are difficult to understand in other books in a way that makes intuitive sense to me. He uses images, analogies and even little experiments to get you thinking along the right lines. This approach seemed to work great for me, since even such heavy concepts as “miasms” and “homeoprophylaxis” (homeopathic vaccination) were explained using a metaphor that makes intuitive sense and got me to understand what’s really behind those concepts.

This book is not a self-help book, there are already oodles of those out on the market. This one is about the “how” and “why” of homeopathy. I can recommend this book fullheartedly to anyone who wants to understand homeopathy on a profound level and is not afraid to use his imagination to get there.

Anthony L. Andrady, “Plastics and the Environment”
    Wiley-Interscience (February 20, 2003) | ISBN: 0471095206 | 792 pages | PDF | 6 Mb

Plastics offer a variety of environmental benefits. However, their production, applications, and disposal present many environmental concerns. Plastics and the Environment provides state-of-the-art technical and research information on the complex relationship between the plastic and polymer industry and the environment, focusing on the sustainability, environmental impact, and costbenefit tradeoffs associated with different technologies.

Bringing together the field’s leading researchers, Anthony Andrady’s innovative collection not only covers how plastics affect the environment, but also how environmental factors affect plastics. The relative benefits of recycling, resource recovery, and energy recovery are also discussed in detail. The first of the book’s four sections represents a basic introduction to the key subject matter of plastics and the environment; the second explores several pertinent applications of plastics with environmental implications–packaging, paints and coatings, textiles, and agricultural film use. The third section discusses the behavior of plastics in some of the environments in which they are typically used, such as the outdoors, in biotic environments, or in fires. The final section consists of chapters on recycling and thermal treatment of plastics waste. Chapters include:
    Commodity Polymers
    Plastics in Transportation
    Biodegradation of Common Polymers
    Thermal Treatment of Polymer Waste
    Incineration of Plastics
The contributors also focus on the effectiveness of recent technologies in mitigating environmental impacts, particularly those for managing plastics in the solid waste stream. Plastic and design engineers, polymer chemists, material scientists, and ecologists will find Plastics and the Environment to be a vital resource to this critical industry.
