Sisay Asefa "The Economics Of Sustainable Development"
W. E. Upjohn Institute | 2005-07-31 | ISBN: 0880993219 | 191 pages | PDF | 1,3 Mb
In this interesting, and accessible volume, a distinguished group of social scientists provides an economic perspective on critical issues that characterize the topic of sustainable development. In each case, they give hope that the challenges facing societies can be surmounted and millions can be lifted out of poverty by adopting policies that encourage the investment in human capital, democratic institutions, and improved market performance.
This book contains an introduction and six chapters that are based on presentations made at the fortieth annual Werner Sichel Economics Lecture- Seminar Series, hosted by the Department of Economics at Western Michigan University during the academic year 2003–2004. The series is made possible through the financial support of the W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research and Western Michigan University. It is named for Werner Sichel, who stepped down after spring semester 2005 following 45 years of teaching economics at Western Michigan University. A Fulbright Scholar, he is the author or editor of 18 works on economics used around the world, among them The State of Economic Science: Views of Six Nobel Laureates, which he edited and which was published by the W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research.
In directing the lecture series and in preparing this book, I have been most grateful to the chapter authors, without whose cooperation, of course, the publication of this book would not have been possible. I am also grateful to my colleagues in the Department of Economics at Western Michigan University for their cooperation in the organizing of the lecture series. In particular, I am thankful to the members of the economics department lectures committee
for the 2003–2004 academic year: Dr. Bassam Harik, Dr. Jon Neill, and Mr. George Erickcek of the W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research.
Finally, I am especially thankful to the W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research for its cosponsorship of the series and for its excellent editorial services during the publication of this book.
