Thierry Van de Velde “Value-Added Services for Next Generation Networks "
AUERBACH | 2007-12-13 | ISBN:0849373182 | 176 pages | PDF | 1,9 Mb
In the NGN world, no truer words are spoken than "the future is now." And the competition in the information networking arena will only intensify in the next 5-10 years. Choosing the correct NGN-VAS strategy now will set your company apart. Value Added Services for Next Generation Networks examines the quest for the real added value in modern communication systems. The author covers more than just the technology itself, but also examines how it is being used and how it could be used to gain a strategic advantage. The book starts with a SOTW analysis for PSTN/GSM operators and new entrants and the threats they will undoubtedly face. The author examines the fundamentals of genuine communication services and the service providers' starting position, then takes you on a tour through the landscape of NGN standards, contrasting the 3GPP IMS architecture with that of IETF, UMA, and OMA. He discusses practical ways to build an NGN SDP and the essential business aspects involved in this enterprise. The book highlights how, technically, the NGN can be interconnected, or glued, to the existing GSM/PSTN infrastructure, justifying the choice of protocols and network architecture. It also describes general concepts, architectural requirements, and technologies in modern VAS platform and new VAS for the NGN in terms of network implementation, end user experience, business scope, and cost/revenue projections. But is NGN just a game of investments in equipment, of CAPEX and OPEX savings? Is the so-called triple play just a matter of marketing, partnerships, and mergers? How will the market play out? Where will the NGN and VAS ultimately go? And more importantly, what is your NGN-VAS strategy? By addressing these questions and more, this book prepares you for success in the emerging telecommunications environment.

Genetic Democracy: Philosophical Perspectives
Genetic Democracy: Philosophical Perspectives
ISBN: 1402062052 | 160 pages | PDF | 972 KB
GENETIC DEMOCRACY involves an in-depth analysis of the ethical, social and philosophical issues related to modern genetic research and gene technology. The aim of the book is to introduce systematic research on the social and ethical impacts of the use and development of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) as well as the acquisition, use and storage of human genetic information (HGI). The book contributes into enhancing public discussion and reaching fair and democratic decision-making practices in GMO and HGI use and development both on local and global level.
There are currently few European texts which address the issues involved in a theoretical and systematical manner. GENETIC DEMOCRACY have been written from the viewpoint of social and political philosophy rather than that of traditional bioethics. There is a clear need for a throughout and authoritative philosophical and ethical analysis of the issues involved in genetic research and gene technology. The book will appeal to philosophers, social scientists, genetics professionals, policy makers, academics, industrial organisations and human rights organisations as well as university students and legal scholars. The book will have a broad appeal across Europe, Asia and America since many states are currently considering policy responses to many of the practices discussed in the books (e.g., human biobanks).

Tony Thorne “Dictionary of Contemporary Slang "
A & C Black Publishers Ltd | 2006-12-20 | ISBN:0713675292 | 512 pages | PDF | 5,2 Mb
This book is absolutely the best about "slang" that I have ever seen. Every "slang" word that I can think of is in here. If you need books for an interesting read or to help with teaching English then this is one of those you must have.
Slang derives much of its power from the fact that it is clandestine, forbidden or generally disapproved of. So what happens once it is accepted, even in some cases embraced and promoted by ‘mainstream’ society? Not long ago the Oxford English Dictionary characterised slang as ‘low and disreputable’; in the late 1970s the pioneering sociolinguist Michael Halliday used the phrase
‘anti-language’ in his study of the speech of criminals and marginals. For him, theirs was an interestingly ‘pathological’ form of language. The first description now sounds quaintly outmoded, while the second could be applied to street gangs – today’s posses, massives or sets – and their secret codes. Both, however, involve Value judgements which are essentially social and not linguistic.
Attitudes to the use of language have changed profoundly over the last three decades, and the perceived boundaries between ‘standard’ and ‘unorthodox’ are becoming increasingly ‘fuzzy’.
Today, tabloid newspapers in the UK such as the Sun, the Star and the Sport regularly use slang in headlines and articles, while the quality press use slang sparingly – usually for special effect –
but the assumption remains that readers have a working knowledge of common slang terms.

Barry M. Farber "How to Learn Any Language: Quickly, Easily, Inexpensively, Enjoyably and on Your Own"
Citadel (2001-04-01) | ISBN 0806512717 | 184 Pages | PDF | ~1 Mb
This book belongs to a category of books that that tell you things that, if you thought about it for a few minutes, you could have figured out yourself. A type of book that is very popular in America. Much of the book chronicles Mr. Farber's exploits in learning to speak different languages. Some will find this interesting and inspiring. For others (judging by some posts here) it may seem like too much of an ego trip. I enjoyed it, but I was already doing virtually everything he talks about when it comes to learning languages.
This may be the most frequently told joke in the world – it’s repeated every day in almost every language:
“What do you call a person who speaks two languages?”
“Bilingual.”
“What do you call a person who speaks three languages?”
“Trilingual.”
“What do you call a person who speaks four languages?”
“Quadrilingual.”
“What do you call a person who speaks only one language?”
“An American!”
With your help this book can wipe that smile off the world’s face.
The reason Americans have been such notoriously poor language learners up to now is twofold:
1. We’ve never really had to learn other peoples’ languages before, and
2. Almost all foreign language instruction available to the average American has been until now (one hates to be cruel) worthless. “I took two years of high school French and four more years in college and I couldn’t even order orange juice in Marseilles” is more than a self effacing exaggeration. It’s a fact, a shameful, culturally impoverishing, economically dangerous, self defeating fact!
Modern commerce and communications have erased reason 1.
You and the method laid out in this book, working together, will erase reason 2.
It started for me when I learned that the Norwegian word for “squirrel” was acorn. It may have been spelled ekorn, but it was pronounced acorn. Then I learned that “Mickey Mouse” in Swedish is Mussie Pig. Again, the Swedish spelling varied, but so

Hughes-Warringt “Fifty Key Thinkers on History, 2nd edition "
Routledge | 2007-12-14 | ISBN: 0415366518 | PDF | 442 pages | 2,4 Mb
Fifty Key Thinkers on History is a superb guide to historiography through the ages. The cross-section of debates and thinkers covered is unique in its breadth, taking in figures from ancient China, Greece and Rome, through the Middle Ages, to contemporary Europe, America, Africa and Australia; from Bede to Braudel; Marx to Michelet; Ranke to Rowbotham; Foucault to Fukuyama. Each clear and concise essay offers biographical information, a summary and discussion of the subjects approach to history and how others have engaged with it, a list of their major works and a guide to diverse resources for further study, including books, articles, films and websites.
As with other works in Routledge’s Fifty Key series, each entry includes a short essay outlining biographical information and the key ideas of the thinker in focus. Each essay, I hope, will give you a taste of the thinker’s interests and approach to the past and how others (myself included) have engaged with it. That I say ‘taste’ accords with my belief that this book offers points of departure, not points of arrival. Having read what I have to say, I hope that you will explore
discussions on and by these thinkers in more depth for yourself. I have included details of each writer’s major works and further resources. I call the latter further ‘resources’ rather than ‘reading’ because they include audiovisual as well as printed materials.
These reflections, and my selection, are unlikely to satisfy either diehard defenders or bitter critics of canons, and I expect that people will ask me, ‘Why didn’t you include so-and-so?’ for the rest of my life. If this work encourages more people to engage with historiography, however, then it will have been worth it.

Stephen T. Beckett, "The Science of Chocolate"
Royal Society of Chemistry | ISBN:0854049703 | 2nd edition | PDF | 234 pages | 6Mb
The second edition of this international best seller has been fully revised and updated describing the complete chocolate making process, from the growing of the beans to the sale in the shops. The reader will discover how confectionery is made and how basic science plays a vital role. There is discussion of the monitoring and controlling of the production process, and the importance of the packaging. A series of experiments, which can be adapted to suit students, are included to demonstrate the physical, chemical or mathematical principles involved. This book is ideal for those studying food sciences, working in the confectionery industry or just with a general interest in chocolate!
As a result of this I received letters from both pupils and teachers requesting more information or new experiments to try. Subsequently I was contacted by Chris Butlin, who was then
developing a food option for the Salters’ Physics Advanced Level course. This resulted in some of the science of chocolate being included in this option. The numerous talks given by my colleagues
and myself to junior schools, societies and universities also convinced me that there was a genuine interest in this topic and that people were not just coming for the free samples.
When, therefore, the Royal Society of Chemistry asked me if I would write a full book on this topic, aimed at schools and universities, I agreed to do so, without realising the amount of
work involved. It was very gratifying, however, to learn in 2006 that the sales were such that a second edition of the book was required. Several people had commented that they wished to know more about the health and nutrition aspects of chocolate and, as a lot of research has recently been carried out in the area, this seemed the ideal subject for a new chapter. In addition, in 2005 New Scientist published a book entitled Does Anything Eat Wasps? in
which the question was asked about how are bubbles put into Aeros. Possible solutions are given here as part of a second new chapter.
Having graduated in physics, the book is naturally biased in this direction, although I have tried to include a substantial amount of chemistry and even some mathematics in the project work

Roger L. Huard “Plato's Political Philosophy: The Cave "
Algora Publishing | 2006-11-01 | ISBN: 0875865305 | PDF | 196 pages | 1,2 Mb
Roger Huard invites readers to explore Plato s myth of the Cave, which is central to his magnum opus on political philosophy, The Republic. Using The Cave as a key, Huard debunks conventional interpretations of to Plato s political thought (conservative and progressive interpretations alike), and unfolds Plato's notions about the structure of the world, his ideas about justice and human well being, challenging many of our conceptions of the cosmos and political beliefs.
The primary goal of this exploration is to arrive at an understanding of Plato s political ideas -- an understanding that is not saddled with the misconceptions that plague contemporary interpretations of his thinking, conservative and progressive alike. The author argues further that this re-examination provides a way to look at the human condition that is significantly different from most available perspectives on the matter and that, by virtue of this difference, challenges both our conceptions of the cosmos and many of our deeply held political beliefs.
The author provides a reinterpretation of the cave myth that discusses specifically the structure of knowledge that is imbedded in the myth as well as the concept of philosophy and the philosopher that it details especially in terms of the relationship of the philosopher to the greater social order.
An examination follows of the structure of the world that Plato s myth rests upon. This is important because this structure is fundamentally different from current scientific and religious conceptions of the cosmos. It is also significant because Plato s notions about the structure of the world are linked to his ideas about justice and human well being, a link that is forged (albeit implicitly) in his Myth of the Cave.
The author then proceeds to a discussion of four topics that separate contemporary political thinking from Plato s:
freedom,
equality,
truth, and
art
A two-part examination of these topics demonstrates, first, that Plato s thoughts on these matters are not as we conventionally think them to be; and second, turns a critical gaze on how contemporary political thought may be mistaken about its own ideas concerning freedom, equality, truth and art. A key feature in this re-examination is the differing conceptions we have from Plato s on the private and public realms and how these realms are connected to our ideas about economics and politics.
The book concludes with a discussion on the importance of Plato s political philosophy and how it is linked at a fundamental level to some of our cherished political beliefs about justice, human well-being and community.

Stephen Denning “The Secret Language of Leadership: How Leaders Inspire Action Through Narrative"
Jossey-Bass | 2007-10-12 | ISBN:0787987891 | PDF | 304 pages | 1,4 Mb
The book introduces the concept of narrative intelligence—an ability to understand and act and react agilely in the quicksilver world of interacting narratives. It shows why this is key to the central task of leadership, what its dimensions are, and how you can measure it. The book’s lucid explanations, vivid examples and practical tips are essential reading for CEOs, managers, change agents, marketers, salespersons, brand managers, politicians, teachers, parents—anyone who is setting out to the change the world.
The World Bank is an international lending organization located in Washington, D.C., and aimed at relieving global poverty. For several decades, I had held a number of positions and functions, including programming and budgeting, the West Africa riverblindness program, population, health and nutrition programs, and the quality control of operations. In the early 1990s, I had been director of the Southern Africa Department, where I had overseen the work of several hundred people working in ten countries. Now, as director of the Africa Region, I was responsible for the operations of more than a thousand staff working in forty-three countries. After that much experience as an executive, I believed that I understood management, although I was about to discover that I had much to learn about leadership.
Large organizations may look stable, but appearances are deceptive. In the past year, the president had unexpectedly died. Last month, my boss had decided to retire. Now someone else had just been named to my post.

Irene Oh “The Rights of God: Islam, Human Rights, and Comparative Ethics "
Georgetown University Press | 2007-11-15 | ISBN:1589011848 | 158 pages | PDF | 1,2 Mb
Promoting Islam as a defender of human rights is fraught with difficulties. Many advocates of human rights readily point out the numerous examples of humanitarian failures carried out in the name of Islam: the Taliban in Afghanistan, female genital mutilation in Africa, the penal
code in Saudi Arabia, genocide in Darfur, and the September 11 attacks in the United States. As a result, human rights proponents are often tempted to blame Islam, if not religion generally, for human rights violations.
The avoidance of Islam and religion in human rights dialogue presents a serious problem for the advancement of universal human rights, however.
Separating religious belief from human rights requires that we undertake the impossible task of distinguishing an important source of our ethical values from ethical norms themselves. For many people, the validity of human rights stems from a foundational belief in God and the
dignity that God imparts to every human being. Although the foundations of human rights may be debated, human rights scholars cannot easily dismiss the potential that foundational beliefs, including Islam, hold in advancing human rights agendas. After all, approximately one billion
inhabitants of this earth identify themselves as Muslim. To ignore the values of Islam would be to deny the voices of one-fifth of the world’s population in determining what should be “universal” human rights.

In the eye-blink that has elapsed since the turn of the millennium, the lives of those of us who work with information have been utterly transformed. Pretty well all we need to know is on the web; if not today, then tomorrow. It’s where we learn and play, shop and do business, keep up with old friends and meet new ones. What makes it possible for us to find the stuff we need to know? Search engines.
Search engines - “web dragons” - are the portals through which we access society’s treasure trove of information. How do they stack up against librarians, the gatekeepers over centuries past? What role will libraries play in a world whose information is ruled by the web? How is the web organized? Who controls its contents, and how do they do it? How do search engines work? How can web visibility be exploited by those who want to sell us their wares? What’s coming tomorrow, and can we influence it? We are witnessing the dawn of a new era, starting right now - and this book shows you what it will look like and how it will change your world.
Do you use search engines every day? Are you a developer or a librarian, helping others with their information needs? A researcher or journalist for whom the web has changed the very way you work? An online marketer or site designer, whose career exists because of the web? Whoever you are: if you care about information, this book will open your eyes - and make you blink.

Book Publisher: Grand Central Publishing (01 February, 1991)
ISBN: 0446392308
Book author: John E. Sarno
Amazon Rating: 4.5
Book Description:
Healing Back Pain promises permanent elimination of back pain without drugs, surgery, or exercise. It should have been titled Understanding TMS Pain, because it discusses one particular cause of back pain–Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS)–and isn’t really a program for self-treatment, with only five pages of action plan (and many more pages telling why conventional methods don’t work). According to John E. Sarno, M.D., TMS is the major cause of pain in the back, neck, shoulders, buttocks, and limbs–and it is caused not by structural abnormalities but by the mind’s effort to repress emotions. He’s not saying that your pain is all in your head; rather, he’s saying that the battle going on in your mind results in a real physical disorder that may affect muscles, nerves, tendons, or ligaments. An injury may have triggered the disorder, but is not the cause of the amount or intensity of the resulting pain. According to Sarno, the mind tricks you into not facing repressed emotion by making you focus on pain in the body. When this realization sinks in (”and it must sink in, for mere intellectual appreciation of the process is not enough”), the trick doesn’t work any more, and there’s no need for the pain. (Healing Back Pain should not be used for self-diagnosis. Always consult a physician for chronic or acute back pain.) –Joan Price

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act (officially titled the Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Protection Act of 2002), signed into law on 30 July 2002 by President Bush, is considered the most significant change to federal securities laws in the United States since the New Deal. It came in the wake of a series of corporate financial scandals, including those affecting Enron, Arthur Andersen, and WorldCom. The law is named after Senator Paul Sarbanes and Representative Michael G. Oxley. It was approved by the House by a vote of 423-3 and by the Senate 99-0.
This book illustrates the many Open Source cost-saving opportunities that public companies can explore in their IT enterprise to meet mandatory compliance requirements of the Sarbanes-Oxley act. This book will also demonstrate by example and technical reference both the infrastructure components for Open Source that can be made compliant, and the Open Source tools that can aid in the journey of compliance. Although many books and reference material have been authored on the financial and business side of Sox compliance, very little material is available that directly address the information technology considerations, even less so on how Open Source fits into that discussion.
The format of the book will begin each chapter with the IT business and executive considerations of Open Source and SOX compliance. The remaining chapter verbiage will include specific examinations of Open Source applications and tools which relate to the given subject matter, and last a bootable ?live? CD will have fully configured running demonstrations of Open Source tools as a valuable technical reference for implementation of the concepts provided in the book
* Only book that shows companies how to use Open Source tools to achieve SOX compliance, which dramatically lowers the cost of using proprietary, commercial applications.
* Only SOX book with a bootable-Linux CD containing countless applications, forms, and checklists to assist companies in achieving SOX compliance.
* Only SOX compliance book specifically detailing steps to achieve SOX compliance for IT Professionals.
