Accuracy in judging personality is important in clinical assessment, applied settings, and everyday life. Personality judgments are important in assessing job candidates, choosing friends, and determining who we can trust and rely on in our personal lives. Thus, the accuracy of those judgments is important to both individuals and organizations.

In examining personality judgment, this book takes a sweeping look at the field’s history, assumptions, and current research findings. The book explores the construct of traits within the person-situation debate, defends the human judge in the face of the fundamental attribution error, and discusses research on four categories of moderators in judgment: the good judge, the judgeable target, the trait being judged, and the information on which the judgment is based.
Spanning two decades of accuracy research, this book makes clear not only how personality judgment has come to its current standing but also where it may move in the future.

* * Covers 20 years worth of historical, current and future trends in personality judgment.
* * Includes discussions of debatable issues related to accuracy and error. The author is well known for his recently developed theoy of the process by which one person may render an accurate judgment of the personality traits of another.

Few months for the new financial year to begin and its time to make a run for your tax planning investments, isn’t it? Though the time constraint is quite evident, if you follow a few basic rules, you can do a lot more in this short time left. Firstly, lets try to streamline our focus on tax planning, may be seriously this time, and understand what are the pros and cons of each investment.
A common reasoning among investors is- why pay taxes when the same amount can be invested in tax saving instruments and can get returns on it too! Very true but before taking the plunge in investing, an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of various instruments (if not a through knowledge) is important. Involve your financial advisor as much as possible, his understanding of the tax instruments will help you in achieving your tax goal as well as help you reap benefits.
Beginning with mutual funds, over the years, it has gained a lot of popularity and to reap maximum benefits, Systematic Investment Planning (SIP) has become the new mantra and advised by most investment experts. In the flow of making maximum benefits, one either overlooks the crucial investment options or ends up making bad investment choices. For example, there are people who want to accrue good profits through investments but show an indifferent attitude to mediclaim or life insurance. And even if they have invested in these tools it is by and large to avail tax benefits and nothing else.

Provided you have some previous basic exposure to C and Unix, Beginning Linux Programming delivers an excellent overview of the world of Linux development with an appealing range of essential tools and APIs.

The standout feature of Beginning Linux Programming is its wide-ranging coverage of important topics in basic Unix programming. In a series of short chapters, the authors discuss the basics of writing Unix programs in C, with material on basic system calls, file I/O, interprocess communication (for getting programs to work together), and advanced topics such as socket programming and how to create Unix device drivers.

Parallel to this, the book introduces the toolkits and libraries for working with user interfaces, from simpler terminal mode applications to X and GTK+ for graphical user interfaces. While you won’t be an authority on X or GTK+ after reading this book, you will certainly be able to explore real Linux development on your own after the capable introductory guide provided here. (The book’s main example, a CD-ROM database, gets enhanced in subsequent chapters using new APIs and features as the book moves forward.) This text also serves as a valuable primer on languages and tools such as Tcl, Perl, and CGI. (There’s even a section that explains the basics of the Internet and HTML.)

More than ever, there is no shortage of specific information on Linux programming, but few titles provide such a wide-ranging tour of what you need to know to get serious with Linux development. In all, Beginning Linux Programming gives the reader an intelligent sampling of essential topics in today’s Linux. It’s a wise choice for aspiring Unix C developers or folks seeking to extend the range of their Linux knowledge. –Richard Dragan

Topics covered: Linux overview, compiling C programs, shell programming, pipes, script keywords and functions, Unix file I/O in C, Unix system functions, terminal interfaces (termios, keyboard input, the curses library), memory management, file locking, dbm databases, make and source control basics, man pages, debugging with gdb, processes and signals, POSIX threads and synchronization, IPC and pipes, semaphores, queues and shared memory, sockets, Tcl basics, X Windows and GTK+ for GNOME, Perl basics, HTML and CGI, writing Unix device drivers.

SOA is one of the latest technologies enterprises are using to tame their software costs - in development, deployment, and management. SOA makes integration easy, helping enterprises not only better utilize their existing investments in applications and infrastructure, but also open up new business opportunities. However, one of the big stumbling blocks in executing SOA is security. This book addresses Security in SOA with detailed examples illustrating the theory, industry standards and best practices.

It is true that security is important in any system. SOA brings in additional security concerns as well rising out of the very openness that makes it attractive. If we apply security principles blindly, we shut ourselves of the benefits of SOA. Therefore, we need to understand which security models and techniques are right for SOA. This book provides such an understanding.

Usually, security is seen as an esoteric topic that is better left to experts. While it is true that security requires expert attention, everybody, including software developers, designers, architects, IT administrators and managers need to do tasks that require very good understanding of security topics. Fortunately, traditional security techniques have been around long enough for people to understand and apply them in practice. This, however, is not the case with SOA Security.

Anyone seeking to implement SOA Security is today forced to dig through a maze of inter-dependent specifications and API docs that assume a lot of prior experience on the part of readers. Getting started on a project is hence proving to be a huge challenge to practitioners. This book seeks to change that. It provides bottom-up understanding of security techniques appropriate for use in SOA without assuming any prior familiarity with security topics on the part of the reader.

Unlike most other books about SOA that merely describe the standards, this book helps you get started immediately by walking you through sample code that illustrates how real life problems can be solved using the techniques and best practices described in standards. Whereas standards discuss all possible variations of each security technique, this book focusses on the 20% of variations that are used 80% of the time. This keeps the material covered in the book simple as well as self-sufficient for all readers except the most advanced.

The Encyclopedia of Children’s Health and Wellness

Hardcover: 682 pages
Publisher: Facts on File (September 2004)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0816048215
ISBN-13: 978-0816048212
This title in the Facts on File Library of Health and Living series has more than 600 entries covering pediatric health from the prenatal state through 18 years of age. From serious illnesses, such as Tay-Sachs disease, to simple problems, such as a nosebleed, the encyclopedia offers a discussion of the illness, then provides separate paragraphs on the cause, treatment, symptoms, and prevention for each problem discussed. Particularly helpful are the articles on common conditions such as ADHD, lice, and roseola. The articles are, on the whole, easy to understand and provide good basic information. There are numerous see references within the text that will direct the reader to the proper article to answer his or her questions. A table in the entry Immunization provides a time line showing when children should be vaccinated against common illnesses.

In addition to entries on diseases and conditions, there are brief articles on medical specialists, vaccinations, associations, even insects that can cause and spread disease. The book focuses on children in the U.S. almost exclusively, and several diseases that effect children in other parts of the world, such as Chagas disease and leishmaniasis, are not discussed. Given the recent spread of West Nile virus, monkeypox, and other illnesses to the U.S., perhaps prominent global children’s illnesses should be included in future editions.

An extensive appendix section in volume 2 offers addresses and URLs for support groups and patient-information groups, a list of camps for kids with cancer, toll-free hotlines for information, poison hotlines around the country, children’s hospitals, and a guide to handling health emergencies.

SQL Server Interview Questions
By Shiv Prasad Koirala

ISBN: 8183331033
Publisher: BPB Publications
Format: Paper Back

Description:
But there’s a second stronger reason for writing this book which stands taller than the readers demand and that is SQL Server itself. Almost 90 per cent projects in software industry need databases or persistent data in some or other form. When it comes to .NET persisting data SQL Server is the most preferred database to do it. There are projects which use Oracle, DB2 and other database product, but SQL Server still has the major market chunk when language is .NET and especially operating system is windows. I treat this great relationship between .NET, SQL Server and Windows OS as a family relationship. In my previous book we had only one chapter which was dedicated to SQL Server which is complete injustice to this beautiful product. So why an interview question book on SQL Server? If you look at any .NET interview conducted in your premises both parties (Employer and Candidate) pay no attention to SQL Server even though when it is such an important part of development project. They will go talking about stars (OOP, AOP, Design patterns, MVC patterns, Microsoft Application blocks, Project Management etc etc). I am not saying these things are not important but if you see in development or maintenance majority time you will be either in your IDE or in SQL Server. Secondly many candidates go really as heroes when answering questions of OOP, AOP, Design patterns, architecture, remoting and others but when it comes to simple basic question on SQL Server like SQL, indexes (Forget DBA level questions) they are completely out of track. Third very important thing IT is changing people expect more out of less. That means they expect a programmer should be architect, coder, tester and yes and yes a DBA also. There where times and it will still exist for mission critical data that there will be separate positions for DBA’s. But now many interviewers expect programmers to also do a job of DBA, Data warehousing etc. This is the major place where developers lack during facing these kinds of interview. So this book will make you walk through those surprising questions which can sprang from SQL Server aspect. I have tried to not go too deep as that will defeat the complete purpose of an “Interview Question” book. I think that an interview book should make you run through those surprising question and make you prepare in a small duration (probably with a night or so). I hope this book really point pitfalls which can come during SQL Server Interview’s. I hope this book takes you to a better height and gives you extra confidence boost during Interviews. SQL Server is the database flagship of Microsoft. It’s probably the only best database product when doing projects with windows and its rule the windows family like a king. “SQL Server 2005″, its recent release is packed with probably the best features like .NET integration, Data warehousing and mining concept which makes it one of the best product for both DBA’s and programmers. This book goes how to tackle interview questions related to this product and get you in to a decent position.

    current and concise

My LTC facility is utilizing this book as the fondation for our procedures book. The material is current, easy to read and concise. I wrote a “Procedure Manual” statement in the front on the policy book that states this book is our Procedure Manual. I had to update the Policy book and was able to get rid of a lot of outdated procedures thanks to this great book!

The Human Side of Medicine: Learning What It’s Like to be a Patient and What It’s Like to be a Physician

    Paperback: 256 pages
Publisher: Auburn House Paperback; 1 edition (April 2002)
    Language: English
    ISBN-10: 0865693196
    ISBN-13: 978-0865693197
    Book Description
At a time of great change in the technology and delivery of medical care, the timelessness and permanence of the non-technical aspects of medicine–the human side–are of profound value to patients and physicians alike. With more than 30 years of medical practice, teaching, advising, and mentoring medical students and undergraduates, Savett champions two premises: first, that the importance of physicians mastering the human side of medicine is as critical as learning its biology and technology; and second, that this can be taught. Attending to the human side refines diagnosis and treatment by recognizing the uniqueness of each patient’s experience, and it enriches the experience for all those in the caring professions. Physicians who have always put their patients’ interests first and never compromised their professional values have preserved their identity, vitality, and enthusiasm as caring doctors. This is a book about what keeps the practice of medicine stimulating: not fascinating cases, but fascinating people and relationships, the best reasons to enter medicine. Savett believes that learning about the human side of medicine will help to attract talented and compassionate people to a career in medicine and will provide a context for later learning in medical school, and that teaching the human side of medicine as a primary subject is critical to become a good doctor. The community of patients is the ultimate beneficiary. Essential reading for all students considering the profession of medicine as well as practicing physicians, nurses, and other medical personnel.

If you’re male and have a health question, this is the place to find an answer. This ambitious, 500-page book from the American Medical Association is a thorough guide for keeping a man’s body healthy, making sense of his system, and understanding specific health concerns. Part 1, “The Healthy Man,” gives a quick overview of diet, exercise, weight management, alcohol, drugs, tobacco, and safety in 40 pages, including information you think you should know but maybe don’t, like how to read a food label, manage medications, and check for home safety hazards. Part 2, “Staying Healthy,” goes into more detail about diet, exercise, and weight management, and introduces preventive healthcare (e.g., medical screening tests and self-examinations), emotional health, and avoiding risky behavior and violence. Part 3, “The Reproductive System,” covers male sexuality, including reproductive disorders, STDs, birth control, and treatments for erectile dysfunction. Part 4, “Common Health Concerns,” comprising more than half the book, covers common male medical conditions and how to prevent and/or treat them. The writing is straightforward and serious (no wittiness or jokes), like a consultation with a trusted physician. The book covers so many topics that its treatment of any one condition is far from comprehensive, but it’s an excellent reference and a starting place for learning about your health issues. –Joan Price

    Review
“Men are often reluctant to discuss issues that are important to their general health and well being. This one-of-a-kind guide provides helpful information in an easy-to-read format on major health concerns including diet and nutrition, exercise, sexuality, and emotional health. This guide should help men make better decisions about their health.” —Jeffrey P. Koplan, M.D., M.P.H., Director, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Caring for Patients at the End of Life: Facing an Uncertain Future Together
    Author: Timothy E. Quill

    Book Details
    pages: 264 pages
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA, 1 edition (2001-03-19)
    ISBN: 0195139402

    Format: CHM
    Size: 605 KB

    Summary:
In Caring for Patients at the End of Life: Facing an Uncertain Future Together, Dr. Quill uses his wide range of clinical experience caring for severely ill patients and their families to illustrate the challenges and potential of end-of-life care. Section one utilizes the near death experiences of two patients to explore values underlying medical humanism, and then presents the case of “Diane” to explore the fundamental clinical commitments of partnership and non-abandonment. Section two explores, illustrates, and provides practical guidance for clinicians, patients, and families about critical communication issues including delivering bad news, discussing palliative care, and exploring the wish to die. In section three, difficult ethical and policy challenges inherent in hospice work, including the rule of double effect, terminal sedation, and physician-assisted suicide, are explored using a mix of real cases and an analysis of underlying clinical, ethical, and policy issues. In a final chapter, Dr. Quill discusses the tragic death of his brother which occurred as this book was being completed, and how his family made the most emotionally challenging decisions of their lives. Dr. Quill exposes readers to an internally consistent and practical way of thinking by simultaneously embracing the potential of palliative care, and also acknowledging that it has limitations. His philosophy of offering forthright discussions with patient and family, mutual decision-making, ensuring medical and palliative care expertise and of committing to see the dying process through to the patient’s death is vividly illustrated

    Summary:

Since the publication of the first edition of this book in 1983, A Handbook for Medical Teachers has established itself as an ideal resource for new and established teachers who frequently still have little opportunities for education training. Its popularity relates to the successful combination of sound educational principles, a how-to-do-it approach and an entertaining easy-to-read style. It is supported by numerous illustrations, examples, and pertinent cartoons.

This fourth edition has been extensively revised to reflect the major changes that continue to occur in both undergraduate and postgraduate education.

Many academic staff are coming under external and internal review to demonstrate their teaching competence and the quality of their courses and assessments. This book gives valuable help and advice to those having to respond to such pressures.

The illustrations are by Zig Kapelis, formerly Senior Lecturer in Architecture at the University of Adelaide.

    Summary:

The volume “Therapeutic Neovascularization: Quo Vadis?” picks up the current refinements in fundamental concept of neovascularization, which in the future might pave the way towards a new era of therapeutic applications.

It meets an at times urgent need for treatment of patients who otherwise are not suitable for the established routines of percutaneous and surgical revascularization. At present most of the clinical trials initiated to promote neovascularization of ischemic myocardial or peripheral muscle tissue have failed to provide significant improvement of prespecified endpoints. This collection of manuscripts is selected to provide the most recent developments improving the auspices of successful revascularization therapy. Therefore, it covers sections such as the clinical challenge, novel mechanical and molecular concepts and cell therapy as an option, each composed of chapters written by experts in their fields.

This collection of current and future concepts of neovascularization offers fascinating insights into refining a powerful therapeutic tool which has not yet had the chance to live up to the expectations and needs of the medical community. Indeed, the scientific modifications of a fundamentally sound concept will enable its applicability in the not so distant future. The condensed collection of current views on neovascularization is intended to speed up this process.

The Ayurveda Encyclopedia: Natural Secrets to Healing, Prevention & Longevity
    Author: Swami Sada Shiva Tirtha

    Product Details
    pages: 686 pages
    Publisher: Sat Yuga Press
    ISBN: 0965804224
    Format: PDF

    Summary:
Discover the secrets of natural healing through stress-reduction techniques, personalized health programs, purposeful career, deepening spirituality, herbs, nutrition, aromas, yoga, meditation, music, colors, massage, and more. This is the most complete and in-depth book on Ayurveda with photographs of 85 major Ayurvedic herbs, and 89 photographs on Ayurvedic hatha yoga for general health, pregnancy, and seniors. This authoritative guide covers the whole field of Ayurveda in its 686 pages (8-1/2 x 11). There is a simple, yet detailed discussion of how Ayurveda works so anyone can understand this unique healing process. Maintaining its simple style, it thoroughly covers pathology and diagnosis techniques so the lay person can understand the cause and development of disorders, and so medical professionals can appreciate the medical insights offered through Ayurveda. The book appeals to lay persons, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other health practitioners.
Ayurveda means the “science of life”. It originated in India more than 5,000 years old and is believed to be the oldest healing science in existence, from which all other systems emerged. Pronounced “Aa-your-vay-da”, this ancient healing system has three main focuses: 1) Healing illness, 2) Prevention of disease and 3) Longevity or age reversal.
Laws of Nature and Spirituality In short, Ayurveda simply explains the laws of nature that cause health or disease. The first cause of illness is said to be the loss of faith in the Divine or experiencing a spiritual lacking. From here illness develops due to internal conditions (e.g., foods and liquids) or external conditions (e.g., seasons, lifestyle). The main factors that cause poor health (also described as imbalance) are 1) poor digestion and 2) Weak immune systems.
When food is not properly digested it sits in the body. Nutrients are not absorbed and the food decays and forms toxins. These toxins cause most diseases in the body. Therefore, it is important to have good digestion.
The immune system can become depleted by poor nutrition, overwork, drugs and other excesses. The finest essence of nutrition develops a life sap that protects the immune system, much like the sap of a tree heals the bruises in its bark. In addition to promoting physical health, it is the life sap that becomes transformed through meditation to produce mental peace and spiritual development. With all the immune disorders that are prevalent these days, it is even more important that persons develop their immune sap.
What Makes Ayurveda So Unique ? This spiritual science offers numerous unique benefits: It looks at people as individuals, not as a generic group. It heals from the root-cause of an illness, not merely treating the symptoms. Only natural therapies are offered. No side effects develop from the therapies. Therapies are inexpensive and effective.
How Does Ayurveda Work? Tridosha Theory:
The basic view of Ayurveda is that all of life (people, food, animals, nature, the universe, and diseases) are combinations of three energy-elements: air (called Vayu or Vata), fire (called Pitta), and water (called Kapha). When these elements are balanced, one is healthy. Illness is defined as an imbalance of these elements; all disorders excesses of one or more element.
People and the Elements: A person’s constitution (dosha) is predominantly one or more of these elements. Each element relates to certain body types, foods and health concerns. By nature, whatever a person’s constitution is, they have a tendency for it to become excessed. For example an air constitution person (Vayu dosha) is thin and bony. Physical symptoms of excess air include dry skin, cracking bones, gas and constipation. Mental symptoms of excess air include fear, worry, anxiety and nervousness. When an air constitution (Vayu dosha) person is balanced they are creative, adaptable and have no physical health concerns. Ayurveda notes that certain foods increase air and other foods reduce air. In general, excess air is reduced by eating cooked or steamed foods, and eating every three or four hours. Foods like carrots, rice and mung beans reduce excess air. Broccoli, baked beans and barley increase air (e.g., they cause gas). Excessive lifestyles also increases the air element.
Fire constitution people (Pitta dosha) tend towards excess heat. When healthy they are strong, make good leaders and are warm and goal oriented. When the Pitta dosha is imbalanced, mentally they become hot tempered, impatient, irritable. Physically they develop heat-related disorders such as acne, rashes, diarrhea, ulcers, toxic blood, liver, kidney, gall bladder, heart and spleen disorders.
Water constitutions (Kapha doshas) tend towards excess water. When healthy they are strong, muscular, calm and loyal. When water becomes excessed, they develop lethargy, and a hoarding or greedy nature. Physically they develop congestion, overweight, edema, heart and kidney problems, etc.
To review, health means balance. Each constitution has a natural tendency to become imbalanced or excessed. By eating foods and living a lifestyle that reduces the the excesses, one remains balanced. Balancing produces healing, prevention, and reverses the aging process. Many people have two or even all three elements in their constitution. In these cases, both elements tend toward excess. Thus foods and lifestyles that reduce both elements need to be followed.
What Therapies Does Ayurveda Offer? Using a holistic approach, Ayurveda offers therapies for each of the five senses because different people learn better through different senses. Therapies include; Taste: Herbs and nutrition. Touch:Massage (abhyanga), yoga, exercise. Smell: Aromatherapy. Sight: Color therapy. Hearing: Music therapy, mantra meditation, chanting. Spiritual therapies include meditation, living ethically, and working in a career that one loves or is purposeful.
Environmental factors are also considered from this holistic outlook. These therapies include house, apartment and office structure and astrological effects. These are sciences unto themselves. Vedic architecture (Vastu Shastra) and Chinese Feng Shui (pronounced fung shway) deal with the laws of nature that integrate the earth, the person and the planets and stars. The exterior and interior design of buildings can also enhance balance or cause imbalance. Vedic astrology (Jyotish) is the science of understanding the laws of nature of the planets and stars, and how they influence us.

    What Does Holistic Mean?
Holistic has two meanings. 1)It looks at the whole of one’s life. Health and disease are byproducts of all aspects of one’s life: nutrition, career, mental frame, family and social activities and spiritual life. If one area is weakened, all areas begin to suffer. If a person is unhappy at work, it will affect all other areas of life. 2)Holistic means holy. Ayurveda reminds us that to have and maintain true health, persons need to take some quiet time for spiritual development. The goal of life is Self-Realization. This is a state of unshakable Divine mental peace.

    Review:
A thoroughly ’user friendly’ instructional guide
Karl Holmquist is an experienced and professional chiropractor who has compiled an instruction manual on the chiropractic principle in correcting the spine in your own home. Profusely illustrated, comprehensive, practical, offering step-by-step lessons, making it a thoroughly ’user friendly’ instructional guide, the “Home Chiropractic Handbook” is ideal for the non-specialist general reader and will hold immense interest for anyone curious about the chiropractic approach to health and medicine. Also very highly recommended for personal and community library Alternative Medicine reference collections is Holmquist’s instructional DVD, Home Chiropractic .

    Review:
    What a Joke!!!
In most States a Chiropractor needs an undergraduate degree in Biology or some other science, then graduate studies at an accredited Chiropractic School. The idea that someone can make a specific adjustment at home is insane. Just wait for the first person who breaks a neck or ribs- Mr. Karl there is itchin’ for a lawsuit. What’s next “Do-it-yourself” gall bladder removal… we all have a knife and a needle and thread. How bout getting your stomach stapled… all you need is a knife and a stapler!!!

Alternative Health Care: Medicine, Miracle, or Mirage
    Author: Michael S. Goldstein

    Product Details

    Summary:
In November of 1998 The Journal of the American Medical Association devoted an entire issue to alternative medicine for the first time in its publishing history. According to survey results reported in the journal, 83 million Americans used some form of alternative medicine to preserve and maintain their health in 1997, a sharp increase from the 61 million who turned to alternative forms of care in 1990.
Michael S. Goldstein’s Alternative Health Care is the first comprehensive account of the growing presence of alternative medicine in American society. Beginning with the basic premises of alternative medicine, Goldstein’s book examines the clinical, economic, and political realities of the broad range of alternative care options and practices in the United States and explains why alternative medicine has become a viable choice for so many people who are ill or who seek to remain healthy.
Bringing history, policy, practice, personal experience, and in-depth sociological analysis together into one comprehensive volume, Goldstein—one of the first recipients of funding from the National Institute of Health for research on alternative medicine—also studies the complexities of the relationship between spirituality and alternative medicine and the changing role of alternative medicine in the larger context of American health care. Probing such issues as the corporatization of medicine, the role of alternative medicine in managed care, and the dynamic relationship between conventional and alternative treatments, Goldstein’s Alternative Health Care is more than the long-awaited introduction to the many forms of alternative medicine. It is also the measure of the implications of such care for practitioners, businesses, policymakers, and patients alike.
Alternative Health Care is the definitive guide for the millions of Americans interested in alternative medicine and treatment, American health care, the sociology of medicine, and American social issues.

    Book Description: )
This textbook is an introduction to Scientific Computing, in which several numerical methods for the computer solution of certain classes of mathematical problems are illustrated. The authors show how to compute the zeros or the integrals of continuous functions, solve linear systems, approximate functions by polynomials and construct accurate approximations for the solution of differential equations. To make the presentation concrete and appealing, the programming environment Matlab is adopted as a faithful companion. All the algorithms introduced throughout the book are shown, thus furnishing an immediate quantitative assessment of their theoretical properties such as stability, accuracy and complexity. The book also contains the solution to several problems raised through exercises and examples, often originating from specific applications. A specific section is devoted to subjects which were not addressed in the book and indicate the bibliographical references for a more comprehensive treatment of the material.

    Date: 2005-04-10 Rating: 4
Review: easy to understand and use algorithms
As you would expect from Springer, here is a technically very accurate book. It goes over the main concepts of numerical analysis, which the authors call “scientific computing”. Same thing, really. Unlike earlier years, where someone studying this field would have to write out her own Fortran code to apply the methods, we now have MATLAB. The authors chose this powerful package as one in which to explain and implement the algorithms.

These algorithms are essentially unchanged from what a book on the topic might have described, 20 years ago. Finding numerical integrals, roots of equations, solving linear systems of equations etc.

But using MATLAB helps streamline any coding. And you are encouraged to code, in the problems supplied by the book. There are even answers to some of these. So quite apart from understanding the concepts, a bonus is that you can become quite adept at fully using MATLAB’s abilities as a research tool.

Value Leadership The 7 Principles that Drive Corporate Value in Any Economy:

There is at least one truth in business: once a year, a consultant will draw a new road map to success. Now it’s the turn of Cohan (The Technology Leaders [1997]), who has developed a formula called Value Leadership, based on seven humane principles from treating people with respect to giving to the community. Eight companies meeting these criteria are used as examples, with specific deeds singled out: Goldman Sachs for its insistence on the importance of teamwork, starting with pre-MBA recruitment; Microsoft, for its struggle to control the spread of AIDS in Botswana (in tandem with Merck); and 3M, for devoting 15 percent to research and development. In arguing that all corporate good deeds and values are rewarded, Cohan links his research to financial performance.

    ASP in a Nutshell:

The second edition of ASP in a Nutshell gives developers of Microsoft Active Server Pages (ASP) a quick reference guide for looking up object usage on a dime. This guide is geared toward working ASP programmers who need to get their answers quickly, without wading through long examples. The book is organized into three parts: an introduction to ASP, a language reference, and appendices. This edition has been updated for IIS 5.0 and ASP 3.0 - respectively the latest flavors of Microsoft’s flagship Web server and scripting engines. The ASP introduction is very brief, but it adequately explains the basic concepts behind ASP and server-side scripting. The heart of the title is the language reference that covers the intrinsic ASP objects, plus ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) 2.6, Collaboration Data Objects, file access, and more. Each section is tagged with staggered page markers that usually make it unnecessary to resort to the book’s index to find a topic.

Emergency Medicine Clinics of North America

    The ECG in Emergency Medicine

    Volume 24, Issue 1, Pages 1-242 (February 2006)

Edited by Richard A. Harrigan, MD, William J. Brady and Theodore C. Chan

While working on this issue of the Emergency Medicine Clinics of North
America, we considered not only healthcare provider education, but the constraints
of rendering patient care in the emergency setting. We would like to
recognize all emergency health care providers for their dedicated work for
individuals in need. This work is performed at times under extreme circumstances
with minimal information and resource. And yet, the outcome is
most often positive. We should indeed all be proud of our profession.
We are happy to present a broad range of talented authors from across
the country, and we feel they have provided you with an excellent, in-depth
discussion of the ECG. It is our hope that you will enjoy this issue on The
ECG in Emergency Medicine, and that it will serve as informative reading to
you as well as a valued reference for the future.

on pain and pain management. Continued research efforts and focused
clinical application of these efforts are still required. Recognition by
providers of the ethnic, cultural, and gender differences in the expression,
reporting, and expectations for treatment of pain should also continue to be
a priority in changing attitudes toward pain and pain control. These goals
must be realistic within the chaotic and unpredictable environment that
defines emergency medicine. Practical and time-sensitive approaches to pain
and pain management will continue to be a challenge to enact and enforce in
    our EDs.
The consequences of ‘‘oligoanalgesia’’ in the ED are not insignificant. To
improve our treatment of pain in the ED, a fundamental change in attitude
toward pain and the control of pain is required. This is unlikely to occur
until pain is adequately addressed and treated appropriately as a true
emergency. This edition of Emergency Medicine Clinics of North America
hopes to reinforce the importance of pain education, management, and
treatment for our emergency medical patients.

    Medical Toxicology

    Volume 25, Issue 2, Pages 249-602 (May 2007)

Edited by Christopher P. Holstege, MD and Mark A. Kirk, MD

Medical toxicology is a field that has grown steadily in importance during
the past few decades, but its importance has never been greater than it is today.
More than 2 million toxic exposures are reported annually to the American
Academy of Poison Control Centers. Intentional, accidental, and
iatrogenic exposures are common despite public health and hospital-based
patient safety programs. Environmental exposures such as carbon monoxide
and abuse of both older (eg, ethanol) and newer (eg, ‘‘ecstasy’’) drugs continue
to account for many deaths that are never even reported to poison
control centers. Increased availability of herbal supplements without oversight
by the US Food and Drug Administration has resulted in increased
toxicities and drug interactions. Criminal poisonings associated with sexual
assaults have increased in recent years. Finally, there is greater concern than
ever before about attacks involving deadly chemicals by terrorists. The medical
specialty that serves as ‘‘first-responder’’ to any of these exposures and
scenarios is emergency medicine. Our society has never relied more heavily
on physicians in our specialty to be experts in medical toxicology.
In this issue of the Emergency Medicine Clinics of North America, Guest
Editors Holstege and Kirk have assembled an outstanding group of authors
to educate us on this vital aspect of our specialty. The first articles discuss
a general approach to patients with overdose as well as some special concerns
in pediatric patients; later articles delve into greater depth with regard
to specific toxins. The discussion is not just limited to common medications
but also deals with plants, herbal substances, caustics, and criminal poisonings.
The authors conclude with discussions pertaining to mass chemical
exposures and potential agents of terrorism. These vital topics are not only
relevant to individual emergency physicians but also to emergency medical
    systems.
This issue represents an important addition to the emergency medicine
literature. Experienced emergency physicians as well as emergency medicine
trainees will benefit tremendously from the expertise provided in the pages
that follow. The Guest Editors and authors are to be commended for providing
a single resource that covers a broad spectrum of toxicologic emergencies
in a succinct, clinically relevant, and cutting-edge manner.

    Volume 24, Issue 2, Pages 243-512 (May 2006)

Edited by Brendan Magauran, Joseph H. Kahn and Jonathan S. Olshaker

In this issue of Emergency Medicine Clinics, Guest Editors Drs. Kahn,
Magauran, and Olshaker have assembled an outstanding group of physicians
to educate and update us on the challenging topic of geriatric emergency
medicine. The editors and authors have addressed physiologic
changes, high-risk conditions, and atypical presentations associated with elderly
patients in the ED. This issue represents an important contribution to
education, and is certain to improve the care of our patients in the ED.

    Ethical Issues in Emergency Medicine

    Volume 24, Issue 3, Pages 513-814 (August 2006)

Edited by Raquel M. Schears and Catherine Anna Marco

In this issue of the Emergency Medicine Clinics of North America, Guest
Editors Raquel Shears and Catherine Marco have assembled an outstanding
team of authors to address many of these ethical issues in emergency medicine.
Topics include clinical, research, medico-legal, and systems-based issues.
The authors, almost all emergency physicians themselves, effectively
guide the reader through these challenges and provide some practical
solutions. The editors and authors are to be commended for providing this
valuable addition to the Emergency Medicine Clinics series.

    Emergency Medicine and Public Health

    Volume 24, Issue 4, Pages 815-1080 (November 2006)

Edited by Jon Mark Hirshon and David M. Morris

In this issue of the Emergency Medicine Clinics of North America, Drs.
Jon Mark Hirshon and David Morris use their combined training in emergency
medicine and public health to discuss this bridge. Various approaches
to public health care in the ED are described by the editors and authors. At
the same time, they are able to keep their focus on the concept that the ED is
not the primary care clinic and does not have unlimited resources. The final
article discusses future needs and trends in public health research.
The editors and authors are to be commended for creating this issue of
Clinics. It represents a valuable addition to the series and should be considered
must reading for anyone who desires to truly understand the incredible
importance and unrealized potential of EM in our society.

Whilst there are many books on knowledge management there are few aimed directly at HR practitioners and the critical role that they can play in building a knowledge-centric culture. This practical book draws on the author’s own experience, as well as that of leading-edge Human Resource and Knowledge Management practitioners (including Linda Holbeche, Elizabeth Lank, and David Snowden), each of whom recognise that building a knowledge-centric culture cannot be achieved through technology alone.

It covers areas such as: * Defining the key ingredients of a knowledge-centric culture * The changing structures, roles and responsibilities needed to create a knowledge-centric culture * HR’s unique contribution to building a knowledge-centric culture, together with practical steps for getting started on the KM journey and for keeping the momentum going * Tools and techniques for: opening up a dialogue about why knowledge management is crucial for business and personal success; knowledge mapping; encouraging and facilitating knowledge sharing, as well as ways of identifying key knowledge players * How to help your organisation reframe its assumptions about learning in the knowledge economy * How to ensure that your HR practices are knowledge aligned.

A card penetrates a ziploc bag, right before your eyes. In life and in magic, there exists a line where the possible meets the impossible. There’s a roadblock. A barrier. A limit. INDECENT crosses that line and never looks back. Here’s what your spectator sees: a card is selected from any deck. It’s a free choice - no force. Signed. The card is then lost in the deck, then shuffled. The cards are then dribbled on top of a sealed Ziploc bag. Slowly, the bag is lifted up from underneath the chaos of cards to show that one card is sealed INSIDE the bag - the spectator’s signed card…

When the spectator releases, red marks appear on your arm where they were squeezing. These marks of blood under the skin then slowly, visually, clearly re-arrange themselves into the shape of the spectator’s selection. Seeing is believing.

An Introduction to Language Processing with Perl and Prolog:

The areas of natural language processing and computational linguistics have continued to grow in recent years, driven by the demand to automatically process text and spoken data. With the processing power and techniques now available, research is scaling up from lab prototypes to real-world, proven applications. This book teaches the principles of natural language processing, first covering linguistics issues such as encoding, entropy, and annotation schemes; defining words, tokens and parts of speech; and morphology. It then details the language-processing functions involved, including part-of-speech tagging using rules and stochastic techniques; using Prolog to write phase-structure grammars; parsing techniques and syntactic formalisms; semantics, predicate logic and lexical semantics; and analysis of discourse, and applications in dialog systems. The key feature of the book is the author’s hands-on approach throughout, with extensive exercises, sample code in Prolog and Perl, and a detailed introduction to Prolog. The reader is supported with a companion website that contains teaching slides, programs, and additional material. The book is suitable for researchers and students of natural language processing and computational linguistics.

    K. Thomas Liaw, “Investment Banking and Investment Opportunities in China:
A Comprehensive Guide for Finance Professionals”
    Wiley (July 27, 2007) | ISBN:0470044683 | 576 pages | PDF | 1,4 Mb

China’s economy is rapidly expanding, developing a larger consumer class and opening up new and better moneymaking opportunities. It’s more important than ever that foreign investors, investment bankers, and finance professionals have a reliable guide to help them maneuver through the fast-changing Chinese economy. Investment Banking and Investment Opportunities in China is that comprehensive resource.

Due to the country’s low manufacturing costs, huge and rapidly expanding consumer base, and increasingly attractive opportunities in the financial services sector, China is a magnet for business interests worldwide. But China and its culture can be difficult for Western financial professionals to fully understand. Here, Dr. Liaw provides a comprehensive analysis of Chinese investment banking and investment opportunities for the professional development of financial services practitioners.
Divided into three distinct sections, the book covers all the vital information investors and bankers need to understand in order to profit in China:

Section One: A review of China’s financial markets and business environment, including the current economy, WTO membership issues, opportunities and challenges in Chinese investment, and regulatory issues
Section Two: A focus on investment banking in China covering privatization and market reforms, as well as the increased interest of large global banks in Chinese domestic financial firms
Section Three: Chinese investment opportunities, including growth and value investing, as well as financial instruments for foreign investors such as ADRs and ETFs

Investment Banking and Investment Opportunities in China is an ideal professional reference for investment banking professionals or investors looking for new foreign investment opportunities.

Youssef Cassis, “Capitals of Capital: A History of International Financial Centres, 1780-2005″
    Cambridge University Press; 1 edition (January 22, 2007) | ISBN:0521845351 | 400 pages | PDF | 1,5 Mb

International financial centres have come to represent a major economic stake. Yet no historical study has been devoted to them. Professor Cassis, a leading financial historian, attempts to fill this gap by providing a comparative history of the most important centres that constitute the capitals of capital - New York, London, Frankfurt, Paris, Zurich, Amsterdam, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore - from the beginning of the industrial age up to the present. The book has been conceived as a reflection on the dynamics of the rise and decline of international financial centres, setting them in their economic, political, social, and cultural context. While rooted in a strong and lively historical narrative, it draws on the concepts of financial economics in its analysis of events. It should widely appeal to business and finance professionals as well as to scholars and students in financial and economic history.

Peter J. Tanous, “Investment Gurus A Road Map to Wealth from the World’s Best Money Managers”
    Prentice Hall Press (January 15, 1999) | ISBN: 0735200696 | 432 pages | PDF | 1,3 Mb

Can a smart money manager working from the outside revive a bankrupt company with his clients’ massive capital and a sharp management agenda? Are “value” stocks better than “growth” stocks? Can anyone “beat the market”? Is volatility okay? What about the role of the Internet in trading? These and other questions vital to stock market investors are aired in this remarkable series of interviews with investment industry leaders by Tanous, whose firm, Lynx Investment Advisory, finds money managers for billion-dollar clients. The author brings out the financial background, strategy and tactics of such mutual-fund miracle men as Fidelity Magellan’s Peter Lynch (”what happens to the company… happens to the stock”); “momentum” trader Richard Driehaus (”look for earnings surprises”) and “Super Mario” Gabelli, who champions “intrinsic private market value.” Other big-name trader/managers also speak out freely here. In closing, the author constructs sample “portfolios” of guru-managed Mutual Funds for the reader’s consideration. $50,000 ad/promo; author tour.

    Jossey-Bass (October 27, 2006) | ISBN: 0787985740 | 224 pages | PDF | 1,1 Mb

This fascinating book demonstrates that to be a good communicator and therefore an effective manager, a person must have five qualities in order to be viewed as totally credible–competence, character, composure, sociability, and extroversion. While some executives seem to possess all these qualities and be born with savvy communication skills, Weiner shows how anyone can find ways to make measurable improvements in how they present themselves that will enhance their credibility.

If you put a string in the keyword field now you can type that keyword in the address bar and it will go to that bookmark. For example, if I have a bookmark for the firefox website, I might give it the keyword “ff”. Now, when I type “ff” in the address bar, it goes to the firefox site. I find it is often faster than going through your bookmarks to find it

Tip: Ctrl and a number key will go to the tab indicated by the number. (e.g. Ctrl+3 will go to the third tab from the left)

Tip: CTRL+F5 refreshes the page without accessign the file cache

    Firefox Mouse Tips

    Middle Click
    Note: Two-button mouse

For those without middle mouse buttons or mousewheels, ctrl-click will also open new tabs for links, bookmarks, bookmark folders, history items, and toolbar buttons.

Many Laptops mimic the MiddleClick/MouseWheelClick function if you click both right/left pads at the same time.

Clicking both mouse buttons at the same time also mimics the MiddleClick/MouseWheelClick function.

    Tabs

MiddleClick/MouseWheel Click on a Tab will close that Tab.

    Personal Toolbar

Middleclick/MouseWheelClick on a Bookmark on your Personal Toolbar will open it up in a New Tab

    Folders

MiddleClick/MouseWheel Click on a folder will open all the bookmarks in the folder in a new Tab(s)

    History

MiddleClick/MouseWheel Click on a History item will open the page in a new Tab.

    Back and Forward buttons

MiddleClick/MouseWheel Click on the Back and Forward buttons will open the last/next page in a new Tab.

    Home button

MiddleClick/MouseWheel Click on the Home button will open your homepage in a new Tab(s).

    Links

MiddleClick/MouseWheel Click on a link will open that link in a new tab.

    Throbber

MiddleClick/MouseWheel Click on the Throbber (the ’busy’ icon at the top-right) will open the Firefox homepage in a new Tab.

    Images

Middleclick/MouseWheelClick on “View Image” or “View Background Image” will open the image in a New Tab.

    Double Click
    Download Manager

DoubleClicking a file entry in the Downloads Manager will open/launch the file (provided you haven’t moved it yet)

    Tab Bar

Double Clicking empty space on the Tab Bar will open a ’New Tab’

    Right Click
    Customize Toolbar

You can adjust your toolbars to your liking. Right click on any toolbar, and select ’Customize’. While this dialogue is up, you can move buttons around on your toolbars by click-and-drag to the new location. The window that pops up when you do this is a holding area for unused icons. You can drag any item from it onto your toolbars to have it made available, and you can drag any icon from your toolbars onto this box to hide that icon completely.

Tip: Some toolbar items, such as the Location bar, will expand to take up all available space.

    Keyword Bookmark

Right clicking in a search box (such as the ’search mozillazine, powered by google’, on the left of this page) and selecting ’add a keyword for this search’ lets you make an interactive keyword bookmark.

    Here is how it works:

Give it a name, such as ’Mozillazine search’
now, assign a keyword to it, such as ’moz’
    click ’ok’

From now on, you can search mozillazine (or any other search box you used for this) from your address bar like this:

Enter ’moz search topic’ in your address bar and click Go!

    Drag’n Drop
    Moving bookmarks and folders

You can change a bookmark’s position in a folder or move it from one folder to another or move it to another position on the toolbar by highlighting it & clicking on it (WITHOUT LETTING GO) and dragging it to your desired position.

A folder can be moved the same way as above tip but u MUST hold down the SHIFT key while dragging.

    Icons

You can bookmark the current page by dragging the icon from the location bar to your Bookmarks folder. You can also drag it to the desktop to make an icon for that page.

Drag a text file, a link, a picture, etcetera… from your folders or your desktop to Firefox and it will open in Firefox!

    Links

“Click-and-drag” a bookmark to the main content windown (which is the biggest on the firefox userinterface),so you can open it in a new tab !

Dragging a link onto a new tab will open the link in the new tab.

    Downloading links

Drag any link to the Download Manager Window to add & download the link.

You can also directly download anything from a page by drag and dropping it onto the ’download’ icon in your toolbar (provided you put it there in ’right-click > customize’)

    Mouse and Keyboard
    Images

Holding down the Shift or Ctrl key when you RightClick to “View Image” or “View Background Image” will open the image in a New Tab or New Window.

    Selecting text

If you hold down the CTRL key and left click on part of a web page, that section of the page will be highlighted. If you right click on the selection and choose ’View selection source’, the source code for that part of the page will be displayed.

To quickly highlight text, especially long text fields. Left-click once in the window where you want the selection to start; and then shift-click in the spot where you want the selection to end (selection range). *this is a lot easier than click-selection-dragging, especially where there is a lot of text to highlight.
