If you’re male and have a health question, this is the place to find an answer. This ambitious, 500-page book from the American Medical Association is a thorough guide for keeping a man’s body healthy, making sense of his system, and understanding specific health concerns. Part 1, “The Healthy Man,” gives a quick overview of diet, exercise, weight management, alcohol, drugs, tobacco, and safety in 40 pages, including information you think you should know but maybe don’t, like how to read a food label, manage medications, and check for home safety hazards. Part 2, “Staying Healthy,” goes into more detail about diet, exercise, and weight management, and introduces preventive healthcare (e.g., medical screening tests and self-examinations), emotional health, and avoiding risky behavior and violence. Part 3, “The Reproductive System,” covers male sexuality, including reproductive disorders, STDs, birth control, and treatments for erectile dysfunction. Part 4, “Common Health Concerns,” comprising more than half the book, covers common male medical conditions and how to prevent and/or treat them. The writing is straightforward and serious (no wittiness or jokes), like a consultation with a trusted physician. The book covers so many topics that its treatment of any one condition is far from comprehensive, but it’s an excellent reference and a starting place for learning about your health issues. –Joan Price

Review
“Men are often reluctant to discuss issues that are important to their general health and well being. This one-of-a-kind guide provides helpful information in an easy-to-read format on major health concerns including diet and nutrition, exercise, sexuality, and emotional health. This guide should help men make better decisions about their health.” —Jeffrey P. Koplan, M.D., M.P.H., Director, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Caring for Patients at the End of Life: Facing an Uncertain Future Together
Author: Timothy E. Quill

Book Details
pages: 264 pages
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA, 1 edition (2001-03-19)
ISBN: 0195139402

Format: CHM
Size: 605 KB

Summary:
In Caring for Patients at the End of Life: Facing an Uncertain Future Together, Dr. Quill uses his wide range of clinical experience caring for severely ill patients and their families to illustrate the challenges and potential of end-of-life care. Section one utilizes the near death experiences of two patients to explore values underlying medical humanism, and then presents the case of “Diane” to explore the fundamental clinical commitments of partnership and non-abandonment. Section two explores, illustrates, and provides practical guidance for clinicians, patients, and families about critical communication issues including delivering bad news, discussing palliative care, and exploring the wish to die. In section three, difficult ethical and policy challenges inherent in hospice work, including the rule of double effect, terminal sedation, and physician-assisted suicide, are explored using a mix of real cases and an analysis of underlying clinical, ethical, and policy issues. In a final chapter, Dr. Quill discusses the tragic death of his brother which occurred as this book was being completed, and how his family made the most emotionally challenging decisions of their lives. Dr. Quill exposes readers to an internally consistent and practical way of thinking by simultaneously embracing the potential of palliative care, and also acknowledging that it has limitations. His philosophy of offering forthright discussions with patient and family, mutual decision-making, ensuring medical and palliative care expertise and of committing to see the dying process through to the patient’s death is vividly illustrated

Summary:

Since the publication of the first edition of this book in 1983, A Handbook for Medical Teachers has established itself as an ideal resource for new and established teachers who frequently still have little opportunities for education training. Its popularity relates to the successful combination of sound educational principles, a how-to-do-it approach and an entertaining easy-to-read style. It is supported by numerous illustrations, examples, and pertinent cartoons.

This fourth edition has been extensively revised to reflect the major changes that continue to occur in both undergraduate and postgraduate education.

Many academic staff are coming under external and internal review to demonstrate their teaching competence and the quality of their courses and assessments. This book gives valuable help and advice to those having to respond to such pressures.

The illustrations are by Zig Kapelis, formerly Senior Lecturer in Architecture at the University of Adelaide.

Summary:

The volume “Therapeutic Neovascularization: Quo Vadis?” picks up the current refinements in fundamental concept of neovascularization, which in the future might pave the way towards a new era of therapeutic applications.

It meets an at times urgent need for treatment of patients who otherwise are not suitable for the established routines of percutaneous and surgical revascularization. At present most of the clinical trials initiated to promote neovascularization of ischemic myocardial or peripheral muscle tissue have failed to provide significant improvement of prespecified endpoints. This collection of manuscripts is selected to provide the most recent developments improving the auspices of successful revascularization therapy. Therefore, it covers sections such as the clinical challenge, novel mechanical and molecular concepts and cell therapy as an option, each composed of chapters written by experts in their fields.

This collection of current and future concepts of neovascularization offers fascinating insights into refining a powerful therapeutic tool which has not yet had the chance to live up to the expectations and needs of the medical community. Indeed, the scientific modifications of a fundamentally sound concept will enable its applicability in the not so distant future. The condensed collection of current views on neovascularization is intended to speed up this process.
