Scholarly publishing is changing and the changes will have an impact on all members of the academic community and on how they will go about creating and maintaining scholarship. Scholarly Publishing: The Electronic Frontier examines the critical issues facing universities, academics, libraries, and scholarly presses in the turbulent time when publishing is likely moving from a print to an electronic paradigm. The essays by all of the major participants in this "electronic revolution" explore the technical, social, and organizational impact of computer-mediated communication. They examine both ends of the continuum and everything in between -- from how the system might be completely overhauled to a gradual retrenching where much remains the same but paper is no longer the communication medium. Some of the subjects, implicit in the various possible futures for scholarly publishing and covered here, include the role of the library with respect to electronic publications, protection of intellectual and economic property, and plagiarism. Intelligent Systems and Signal Processing in Power Engineering

Abhisek Ukil, "Intelligent Systems and Signal Processing in Power Engineering (Power Systems)"
Publisher: Springer | Pages: 372 | 2007-11-16 | ISBN: 3540731695 | PDF | 9 MB
Power engineering has become a multidisciplinary field ranging from linear algebra, electronics, signal processing to artificial intelligence including recent trends like bio-inspired computation, lateral computing and so on. In this book, Ukil builds the bridge between these inter-disciplinary power engineering practices. The book looks into two major fields used in modern power systems: intelligent systems and the signal processing.
The intelligent systems section comprises of fuzzy logic, neural network and support vector machine. The author looks at relevant theories on the topics without assuming much particular background. Following the theoretical basics, he studies their applications in various problems in power engineering, like, load forecasting, phase balancing, or disturbance analysis. These application studies are of two types: full application studies explained like in-depth case-studies, and semi-developed application ideas with scope for further extension. This is followed by pointers to further research information.
In the second part, the book leads into the signal processing from the basics of the system theory, followed by fundamentals of different signal processing transforms with examples. A section follows about the sampling technique and the digital filters which are the ultimate processing tools. The theoretical basics are substantiated by some of the applications in power engineering, both in-depth and semi-developed as before. This also ends up with pointers to further research information.
'Intelligent Systems and Signal Processing in Power Engineering' is helpful for students, researchers and engineers, trying to solve power engineering problems using intelligent systems and signal processing, or seeking applications of intelligent systems and signal processing in power engineering.

Stochastic Modeling of Manufacturing Systems: Advances in Design, Performance Evaluation, and Control Issues

Stochastic Modeling of Manufacturing Systems
Springer | 2005-09-06 | ISBN: 3540265791 | 363 pages | PDF | 3,7 MB
Manufacturing systems rarely perform exactly as expected and predicted. Unexpected events, such as order changes, equipment failures and product defects, affect the performance of the system and complicate decision-making. This volume is devoted to the development of analytical methods aiming at responding to variability in a way that limits its corrupting effects on system performance.
The book includes fifteen novel chapters that mostly focus on the development and analysis of performance evaluation models of manufacturing systems using decomposition-based methods, Markovian and queuing analysis, simulation, and inventory control approaches. They are organized into four distinct sections to reflect their shared viewpoints: factory design, unreliable production lines, queuing network models, production planning and assembly.

Design Data for Plastics Engineers
# Author: Keith O'Brian Natti Rao
# Format:PDF 7.3MB
# Page Count: 208 pages
# Publisher: Hanser Publishers (May 1998)
# ISBN-10: 3446210105
# ISBN-13: 978-3446210103
Mechanical, thermal and rheological properties of polymers form the basic group of property values required for designing polymer machinery. In addition, knowledge of the properties of the resin such as stock temperature of the melt is necessary for optimizing the process. Furthermore, while designing a plastic part, performance properties of the resin depending on the application are to be considered, examples of which are flammability, weather resistance and optical properties, to quote a few. Hence, a variety of property values is needed to accomplish machine design, part design and process optimization.
Comprehensive as well as specific overviews of polymer property data exist in the literature. Also the data banks of resin manufacturers offer quick information on thermophysical properties of polymers. But there are few books dealing with both resin and machine design data based on modern findings.
The intent of this book is first of all to create an easy to use quick reference work covering basic design data on resin, machine, part and process, and secondly, to show as to how this data can be applied to solve practical problems. With this aim in mind numerous examples are given to illustrate the use of this data. The calculations involved in these examples can be easily handled with the help of handheld calculators.
Chapters 1 to 5 deal with the description of physical properties - mechanical, thermal, rheological, electrical and optical - of polymers and principles of their measurement. In Chapter 6 the effect of external influences on the performance of polymers is treated.
