This practical guide shows you how to make your Java web applications more responsive and dynamic by incorporating new Ajaxian features, including suggestion lists, drag-and-drop, and more. Java developers can choose between many different ways of incorporating Ajax, from building JavaScript into your applications "by hand" to using the new Google Web Toolkit (GWT). Ajax on Java starts with an introduction to Ajax, showing you how to write some basic applications that use client-side JavaScript to request information from a Java servlet and display it without doing a full page reload. It also presents several strategies for communicating between the client and the server, including sending raw data, and using XML or JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) for sending more complex collections of data. The book then branches out into different approaches for incorporating Ajax, which include: The Prototype and script.aculo.us Javascript libraries, the Dojo and Rico libraries, and DWR Integrating Ajax into Java ServerPages (JSP) applications Using Ajax with Struts Integrating Ajax into Java ServerFaces (JSF) applications Using Google's GWT, which offers a pure Java approach to developing web applications: your client-side components are written in Java, and compiled into HTML and JavaScript Ajax gives web developers the ability to build applications that are more interactive, more dynamic, more exciting and enjoyable for your users. If you're a Java developer and haven't tried Ajax, but would like to get started, this book is essential. Your users will be grateful.

If you want to learn Microsoft's new C# programming language quickly, you can perhaps do no better than C# Essentials, a compact and extremely intelligent guide. While most of today's programming books seem to be trying to outdo one another in sheer page count, this one bucks the trend with an extremely concise--yet entirely thorough--treatment of C#. This is an efficiently packed, language-based guide that's perfect for those with some previous object-oriented programming experience. It covers all C# language keywords, with particular attention to class design constructs. Short code excerpts, rather than full-length programs, are used to illustrate every feature of the language, from basic design types to data types, class design constructs (including all the details of inheritance), and the basics of the .NET Common Language Runtime (CLR). You'll learn how to model classes correctly using the most advanced features (such as reflection and attributes) that help make C# particularly powerful and elegant. Advanced topics include a guide to making Win32 API calls from within C#, new threading options, and how to interoperate with legacy DLLs and COM objects in C#. At just 200 pages, this text still manages to cover a lot of ground with the specifics of C#, and with many of the features that help give C# its personality as a programming language. Admirably concise, yet filled with expert knowledge for exploiting both basic and advanced features, this title earns high marks as a tutorial for learning Microsoft's latest programming language. It's sure to be a useful choice for any experienced programmer tackling C# for the first time. --Richard Dragan Topics covered: Introduction and tutorial for C# The Common Language Runtime (CLR) A minimal program in C# Identifiers and variables Inheritance Classes and interfaces Arrays Enums Delegates Events Exception handling Attributes Unsafe code Programming with the built-in .NET Framework classes Math and string classes Collections Support for regular expressions I/O and networking classes Threading .NET assemblies and deployment issues Reflection Interoperability with COM and .NET Overview of .NET packages for common programming tasks (including collections, Web services, XML, and Web-based applications) Essential .NET tools References to C# keywords References and format specifiers

SMS or Text is one of the most popular forms of messaging. Yet, despite its immense popularity, SMS has remained unexamined by science. Not only that, but the commercial organisations, who have been forced to offer SMS by a demanding public, have had very little idea why it has been successful. Indeed, they have, until very recently, planned to replace SMS with other messaging services such as MMS. This book is the first to bring together scientific studies into the values that texting provides, examining both cultural variation in countries as different as the Philippines and Germany, as well as the differences between SMS and other communications channels like Instant Messaging and the traditional letter. It presents usability and design research which explores how SMS will evolve and what is likely to be the pattern of person-to-person messaging in the future. In short, Inside Text is a fundamental resource for anyone interested in mobile communications at the start of the 21st Century The book will be of interest to anyone in the CHI, CSCW and mobile communications research areas, as well as sociologists, anthropologists, communications scientists and policy makers.

In test driven development, you first write an executable test of what your application code must do. Only then do you write the code itself and, with the test spurring you on, you improve your design. In acceptance test driven development (ATDD), you use the same technique to implement product features, benefiting from iterative development, rapid feedback cycles, and better-defined requirements. TDD and its supporting tools and techniques lead to better software faster. Test Driven brings under one cover practical TDD techniques distilled from several years of community experience. With examples in Java and the Java EE environment, it explores both the techniques and the mindset of TDD and ATDD. It uses carefully chosen examples to illustrate TDD tools and design patterns, not in the abstract but concretely in the context of the technologies you face at work. It is accessible to TDD beginners, and it offers effective and less well known techniques to older TDD hands. What's Inside Learn hands-on to test drive Java code How to avoid common TDD adoption pitfalls Acceptance test driven development and the Fit framework How to test Java EE components-Servlets, JSPs, and Spring Controllers Tough issues like multithreaded programs and data access code

This is the first volume of a large two-volume editorial project we wish to dedicate to the memory of the late Professor Ryszard S. Michalski who passed away in 2007. He was one of the fathers of machine learning, an exciting and relevant, both from the practical and theoretical points of view, area in modern computer science and information technology. His research career started in the mid-1960s in Poland, in the Institute of Automation, Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Poland. He left for the USA in 1970, and since then had worked there at various universities, notably, at the University of Illinois at Urbana ? Champaign and finally, until his untimely death, at George Mason University. We, the editors, had been lucky to be able to meet and collaborate with Ryszard for years, indeed some of us knew him when he was still in Poland. After he started working in the USA, he was a frequent visitor to Poland, taking part at many conferences until his death. We had also witnessed with a great personal pleasure honors and awards he had received over the years, notably when some years ago he was elected Foreign Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences among some top scientists and scholars from all over the world, including Nobel prize winners. Professor Michalski?s research results influenced very strongly the development of machine learning, data mining, and related areas. Also, he inspired many established and younger scholars and scientists all over the world. We feel very happy that so many top scientists from all over the world agreed to pay the last tribute to Professor Michalski by writing papers in their areas of research. These papers will constitute the most appropriate tribute to Professor Michalski, a devoted scholar and researcher. Moreover, we believe that they will inspire many newcomers and younger researchers in the area of broadly perceived machine learning, data analysis and data mining. The papers included in the two volumes, Machine Learning I and Machine Learning II, cover diverse topics, and various aspects of the fields involved. For convenience of the potential readers, we will now briefly summarize the contents of the particular chapters.

Business Intelligence (BI) software aims to bring together different pieces of a business into views that can make comprehending mountains of data easier. BI is everywhere. Applications that include reports, analytics, statistics, and historical and predictive modeling are all examples of BI applications. Currently, we are in the second generation of BI software, called BI 2.0. This generation is focused on writing BI software that is predictive, adaptive, simple, and interactive. As computers and software have evolved, more data can be presented to end users with increasingly visually rich techniques. Rich Internet Application (RIA) technologies such as Microsoft Silverlight can be used to transform traditional UIs filled with boring data into fully interactive analytical applications to deliver insight from large data sets quickly. Furthermore, RIA applications include 3D spatial design capabilities that allow for interesting layouts of aggregated data beyond a simple list or grid. BI 2.0 implemented via an RIA technology can truly bring out the power of BI and deliver it to an average user via the Web. Next-Generation Business Intelligence Software with Rich Internet Applications provides developers, designers, and architects a solid foundation of BI design and architecture concepts with Microsoft Silverlight. Research in computational intelligence is directed toward building thinking machines and improving our understanding of intelligence. As evident, the ultimate achievement in this field would be to mimic or exceed human cognitive capabilities including reasoning, recognition, creativity, emotions, understanding, learning and so on. In this book, the authors illustrate an hybrid computational intelligence framework and it applications for various problem solving tasks. Based on tree-structure based encoding and the specific function operators, the models can be flexibly constructed and evolved by using simple computational intelligence techniques. The main idea behind this model is the flexible neural tree, which is very adaptive, accurate and efficient. Based on the pre-defined instruction/operator sets, a flexible neural tree model can be created and evolved. This volume comprises of 6 chapters including an introductory chapter giving the fundamental definitions and the last Chapter provides some important research challenges. Academics, scientists as well as engineers engaged in research, development and application of computational intelligence techniques and data mining will find the comprehensive coverage of this book invaluable.

Shape interrogation is the process of extraction of information from a geometric model. It is a fundamental component of Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems. The authors focus on shape interrogation of geometric models bounded by free-form surfaces. Free-form surfaces, also called sculptured surfaces, are widely used in the bodies of ships, automobiles and aircraft, which have both functionality and attractive shape requirements. Many electronic devices as well as consumer products are designed with aesthetic shapes, which involve free-form surfaces. This book provides the mathematical fundamentals as well as algorithms for various shape interrogation methods. From the reviews: "This book provides the mathematical fundamentals as well as algorithms for various shape interrogation methods including nonlinear polynomial solvers, intersection problems, differential geometry of intersection curves, distance functions, curve and surface interrogation, umbilics and lines of curvature, geodesics, and offset curves and surfaces. [? ] It may well be one of the most important books of the 2002s that has been written on shape interrogation for graduate students in mathematics, engineering, computer science, focusing on geometrical modeling and solid modeling. The book will inform and enlighten professionals in industry and therefore remains essential reading for them too. Currently there are several excellent books in the area of geometric modeling and in the area of solid modeling. The major contribution of this book lies in its skilful manner of providing a bridge between these two areas that is guaranteed to make the target audience cry out aloud with delight."Current Engineering Practice 2002-2003, Vol. 45, Issue 3-4 "This book gives a detailed description of algorithms and computational methods for shape interrogation [? ] The book can be used in a course for advanced graduate students and also as a reference text for researchers and practitioners in CAD/CAM. [? ] is a very detailed and complete book on topics that are important in both the theory and the practice of geometric modeling."L. Henrique de Figueiredo, Mathematical Reviews 2003 a "... This book by Patrikalakis and Maekawa is the first thorough, long overdue, look at this crucial area. [? ] It will serve well any researcher, either in academia or industry, working in the area of freeform design or manufacturing. This work continues from the point where the traditional geometric design and solid modeling books stop. ... Shape interrogation and computational geometry of freeform shapes have been a part of the geometric design and manufacturing community for a long time. This book makes efforts and is likely to become the 'Bible' for this area. As a high-quality produced book, it is a must reference for any advanced researcher or developer who works with splines and freeform representations. If you consider yourself one, this book should probably be on your bookshelf."G. Elber, Computer-Aided Design 35 (2003) 1053

Programming Mobile Robots with Aria and Player provides a comprehensive guide to creating object-oriented C programs for robots using the Player and Aria APIs within a Linux environment. A basic knowledge of object-oriented techniques is assumed, but the text is written in a user-friendly style, and is equally suitable for researchers with previous experience of robot control, or for students completely new to the field. The book is fully supported throughout with examples, diagrams, sample programs, and configuration files. MobileRobot?s Pioneers are used as vehicles throughout the book, but most of the techniques and programs that are demonstrated for Player are directly applicable to the wide number of other makes and models that the API supports. In addition, the Aria section is also appropriate for other robots made by MobileRobots. The book discusses how to install the various pieces of software needed and also describes how to: ? configure robots; ? control robots remotely; ? program each individual sensor and actuator; and ? set up and control robots, in both the real world and in a simulated environment (either through Player?s Stage plug-in or Aria?s MobileSim simulator). Programming Mobile Robots with Aria and Player serves as a complete text for undergraduate and postgraduate robotics programming modules, and is also an invaluable reference source for students, teachers and researchers.

The book focuses on a recently emerging topic in security. Specifically, the book focuses on physical layer security. Whereas conventional security mechanisms involve cryptography that operates at higher layers of the protocol stack, the methods described in this book secure communications at the physical layer. The area of physical layer security is an emerging field of research that has seen an explosion of research in the past few years. This trend is only expected to continue as there is a growing need to secure wireless communications without conventional cryptographic network security protocols. The proposed book will consist of contributions from roughly a dozen of the leading research groups in this emerging area. For the first time, important results will be collected together. Important topics will include the secrecy rate of MIMO wireless systems, practical codes for the dissemination of secrets, and authentication of wireless transmitters using waveform-level properties.

The Palm Pre is the hottest new device on the block. It?s the cell phone?nay, personal digital everything?that all the cool kids want to get their hands on . . . but no one wants to use it more than developers! The Palm Pre is more than just a way-cool device, though: it is built on Palm?s brand-spanking-new webOS, an operating system that changes the game for developers. Building on standards-based web technologies, webOS allows us to create applications more quickly and easily than any other platform out there using the same technologies we know and love already. It turns out to be quite fun, too! In this book, you?ll learn all about the Palm Pre and webOS, their capabilities, and how to develop for them. You?ll learn to write applications that function entirely on the Pre itself, and you?ll also learn to write applications that ?live in the cloud? (i.e., keep you connected to the digital world around you). You?ll spend most of your time looking at Mojo, the framework API through which your code interfaces with the operating system. All of this will be presented within the context of six fully functional real-world applications that you can use on your own Pre! Once you?re done, you?ll be ready to write your own webOS applications for the Pre, get them into the app catalog (the online store where Pre applications are made available to Pre owners), and make tons of cash. Learn to program the Palm Pre by sticking to JavaScript. Write useful apps as well as games. Become productive using Mojo and upload new applications within a day. What you?ll learn All about the Palm Pre, its capabilities, webOS architecture, application structure, and development model (including tooling) The Mojo framework/API, what it offers, how it?s organized, and more How to interact with cloud-based services to provide a connected experience for Pre applications How to write on-device applications that store all their data locally (some will then sync to a server-side store when later connected) How to write games as well as useful apps Who is this book for? This book is for fairly experienced web developers looking to take their skills mobile and get a leg up on Palm Pre, webOS, and Mojo development.

Because they're so complicated, many books on relational databases are either burdensomely academic (Database Management Systems is the classic example of this mode--it's superb, but one practically needs a professor to help you decode it) or so practical-minded as to be overly simple. Designing Relational Database Systems has struck an attractive balance between the two extremes by providing enough theory to enable you to design your databases intelligently, while keeping in mind real-world business practices and the practical limitations of actual database management systems. Author Rebecca Riordan emphasizes Microsoft database products to a small degree, using Microsoft Access and the Jet engine in some of her examples. The Microsoft overtones aren't overpowering, by any means. Riordan is an excellent writer, communicating complex details about database design clearly, referring to reinforcements (in the form of arrow-linked tables or conceptual flow diagrams) with great effect. She also uses anecdotal information--stories about getting customers to explain exactly what they want from a database system, for example--to communicate lots of practical advice to the reader. This book would be better with more information on platform-independent user interface design--which is key in publicly accessible Web databases--but that's a minor fault. Read this book if you want to be a more capable database architect

Charles Edge, Zack Smith, and Beau Hunter provide detailed explanations of the technology required for large-scale Mac OS X deployments and show you how to integrate it with other operating systems and applications. Enterprise Mac Administrator's Guide addresses the growing size and spread of Mac OS X deployments in corporations and institutions worldwide. In some cases, this is due to the growth of traditional Mac environments, but for the most part it has to do with "switcher" campaigns, where Windows and/or Linux environments are migrating to Mac OS X. However, there is a steep culture shock with these types of migrations. The products that are used are different, the nomenclature is different, and most importantly the best practices for dealing with the operating system are different. Apple provides a number of tools to help automate and guide IT toward managing a large number of Mac OS X computers?it has since before Mac OS X was initially released. However, if you want to put together all of the pieces to tell a compelling story about how to run an IT department or a deployment of Macs, you need to compile information from a number of different sources. This book will provide explanations of the technology required. Provides complete solutions for the large- and medium-scale integration of directory services, imaging, and security Complete guide for integrating Macs and Mac OS X into mixed environments with confidence and no down time One-stop volume for IT professionals who need the technical details to get their job done as efficiently and effectively as possible What you'll learn Choose a directory services model that works for your organization and integrate it into your existing model Choose an imaging model and begin imaging workstations with or without third-party products Leverage scripting techniques to reduce labor for the IT department Provide network services (file sharing, mobile home folders, messaging, etc.) to the Mac OS X clients Mass-deploy the iPhone Who is this book for? "Brain-inspired information technology" is one of key concepts for the development of information technology in the next generation. Explosive progress of computer technology has been continuing based on a simple principle called "if-then rule". This means that the programmer of software have to direct every action of the computer programs in response to various inputs. There inherently is a limitation of complexity because we human have a limited capacity for managing complex systems. Actually, many bugs, mistakes of programming, exist in computer software, and it is quite difficult to extinguish them. The parts of computer programs where computer viruses attack are also a kind of programming mistakes, called security hole. Of course, human body or nervous system is not perfect. No creator or director, however, exists for us. The function of our brain is equipped by learning, self-organization, natural selection, and etc, resulting in adaptive and flexible information system. Brain-inspired information technology is aiming to realize such nature-made information processing system by using present computer system or specific hardware. To do so, researchers in various research fields are getting together to inspire each other and challenge cooperatively for the same goal.

Floating-point arithmetic is by far the most widely used way of implementing real-number arithmetic on modern computers. Although the basic principles of floating-point arithmetic can be explained in a short amount of time, making such an arithmetic reliable and portable, yet fast, is a very difficult task. From the 1960s to the early 1980s, many different arithmetics were developed, but their implementation varied widely from one machine to another, making it difficult for nonexperts to design, learn, and use the required algorithms. As a result, floating-point arithmetic is far from being exploited to its full potential. This handbook aims to provide a complete overview of modern floating-point arithmetic, including a detailed treatment of the newly revised (IEEE 754-2008) standard for floating-point arithmetic. Presented throughout are algorithms for implementing floating-point arithmetic as well as algorithms that use floating-point arithmetic. So that the techniques presented can be put directly into practice in actual coding or design, they are illustrated, whenever possible, by a corresponding program. Key topics and features include: * Presentation of the history and basic concepts of floating-point arithmetic and various aspects of the past and current standards * Development of smart and nontrivial algorithms, and algorithmic possibilities induced by the availability of a fused multiply-add (fma) instruction, e.g., correctly rounded software division and square roots * Implementation of floating-point arithmetic, either in software?on an integer processor?or hardware, and a discussion of issues related to compilers and languages * Coverage of several recent advances related to elementary functions: correct rounding of these functions and computation of very accurate approximations under constraints * Extensions of floating-point arithmetic such as certification, verification, and big precision Handbook of Floating-Point Arithmetic is designed for programmers of numerical applications, compiler designers, programmers of floating-point algorithms, designers of arithmetic operators, and more generally, students and researchers in numerical analysis who wish to better understand a tool used in their daily work and research.

Traditionally, evolutionary computing techniques have been applied in the area of data mining either to optimize the parameters of data mining algorithms or to discover knowledge or patterns in the data, i.e., to directly solve the target data mining problem. This book proposes a different goal for evolutionary algorithms in data mining: to automate the design of a data mining algorithm, rather than just optimize its parameters. The authors first offer introductory overviews on data mining, focusing on rule induction methods, and on evolutionary algorithms, focusing on genetic programming. They then examine the conventional use of evolutionary algorithms to discover classification rules or related types of knowledge structures in the data, before moving to the more ambitious objective of their research, the design of a new genetic programming system for automating the design of full rule induction algorithms. They analyze computational results from their automatically designed algorithms, which show that the machine-designed rule induction algorithms are competitive when compared with state-of-the-art human-designed algorithms. Finally the authors examine future research directions. This book will be useful for researchers and practitioners in the areas of data mining and evolutionary computation.
