Bond markets differ in one fundamental aspect from standard stock markets. While the latter are built up to a finite number of trade assets, the underlying basis of a bond market is the entire term structure of interest rates: an infinite-dimensional variable which is not directly observable. On the empirical side, this necessitates curve-fitting methods for the daily estimation of the term structure. Pricing models, on the other hand, are usually built upon stochastic factors representing the term structure in a finite-dimensional state space. Written for readers with knowledge in mathematical finance (in particular interest rate theory) and elementary stochastic analysis, this research monograph has threefold aims: to bring together estimation methods and factor models for interest rates, to provide appropriate consistency conditions and to explore some important examples.

S-PLUS is a powerful environment for the statistical and graphical analysis of data. It provides the tools to implement many statistical ideas which have been made possible by the widespread availability of workstations having good graphics and computational capabilities. This book is a guide to using S-PLUS to perform statistical analyses and provides both an introduction to the use of S-PLUS and a course in modern statistical methods. S-PLUS is available for both Windows and UNIX workstations, and both versions are covered in depth. The aim of the book is to show how to use S-PLUS as a powerful and graphical data analysis system. Readers are assumed to have a basic grounding in statistics, and so the book in intended for would-be users of S-PLUS and both students and researchers using statistics. Throughout, the emphasis is on presenting practical problems and full analyses of real data sets. Many of the methods discussed are state-of-the-art approaches to topics such as linear, nonlinear, and smooth regression models, tree-based methods, multivariate analysis and pattern recognition, survival analysis, time series and spatial statistics. Throughout, modern techniques such as robust methods, non-parametric smoothing, and bootstrapping are used where appropriate. This third edition is intended for users of S-PLUS 4.5, 5.0, 2000 or later, although S-PLUS 3.3/4 are also considered. The major change from the second edition is coverage of the current versions of S-PLUS. The material has been extensively rewritten using new examples and the latest computationally intensive methods. The companion volume on S Programming will provide an in-depth guide for those writing software in the S language. The authors have written several software libraries that enhance S-PLUS; these and all the datasets used are available on the Internet in versions for Windows and UNIX. There are extensive on-line complements covering advanced material, user-contributed extensions, further exercises, and new features of S-PLUS as they are introduced. Dr. Venables is now Statistician with CSRIO in Queensland, having been at the Department of Statistics, University of Adelaide, for many years previously. He has given many short courses on S-PLUS in Australia, Europe, and the USA. Professor Ripley holds the Chair of Applied Statistics at the University of Oxford, and is the author of four other books on spatial statistics, simulation, pattern recognition, and neural networks.

UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System) is the third generation telecommunications system based on WCDMA. WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) is the radio interface for UMTS. WCDMA is characterised by use of a wider band than CDMA. It has additional advantages of high transfer rate, and increased system capacity and communication quality by statistical multiplexing, etc. WCDMA efficiently utilises the radio spectrum to provide a maximum data rate of 2 Mbit/s.
UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System) will offer a consistent set of services to mobile computer and phone users no matter where they are located in the world. Based on the GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) communication standard, UMTS, endorsed by major standards bodies and manufacturers, is the planned standard for mobile users around the world by 2002.
Today's cellular telephone systems are mainly circuit-switched, with connections always dependent on circuit availability. Packet-switched connection, using the Internet Protocol (IP), means that a virtual connection is always available to any other end point in the network. It will also make it possible to provide new services, such as alternative billing methods (pay-per-bit, pay-per-session, flat rate, asymmetric bandwidth, and others). The higher bandwidth of UMTS also promises new services, such as video conferencing and promises to realise the Virtual Home Environment (VHE) in which a roaming user can have the same services to which the user is accustomed when at home or in the office, through a combination of transparent terrestrial and satellite connections.
- Provides an introduction to cellular networks and digital communications
- Covers the air interface, radio access network and core network
- Explains the Release '99 specifications clearly and effectively
- Discusses UMTS services and future services beyond 3G
- Features numerous problems and solutions in order to aid understanding
Ideal for Academics and students on telecommunications, electronics and computer science courses, research and development engineers working in mobile/wireless communications and Cellular operators and technical consultants.

Theory and Applications of OFDM and CDMA is an ideal foundation textbook for those seeking a sound knowledge of this fast-developing field of wideband communications. The advanced transmission techniques of OFDM, applied in wireless LANs and in digital and video broadcasting, and CDMA, the foundation of 3G mobile communications, have been part of almost every communication system that has been designed in recent years, with both offering a high degree of flexibility in adjusting the system to the requirements of the application and to the impairments caused by the transmission channel.
Starting from the basics of digital transmission theory, the reader gains a comprehensive overview of the underlying ideas of these techniques and their strengths and weaknesses under various conditions. In this context, the specific requirements of the mobile radio channel and their relevance for the design of digital transmission systems are discussed and related to the items of channel coding and modulation.
- Clear explanation of the basics of digital communications, mobile radio channels, coding and modulation, OFDM as a multicarrier system and CDMA as an application of spread spectrum techniques
- Discusses the most important mobile radio and digital broadcasting systems that use OFDM and CDMA, and explains in detail the underlying ideas for the choice of system parameters
- Progresses from the fundamentals of wideband communication through to modern applications
- Includes a Companion Website featuring a solutions manual, electronic versions of the figures and other useful resources
This volume will be an invaluable resource to advanced undergraduate students and first/second year postgraduates of electrical and engineering and telecommunications. Introduced in 1995, Boundaries and Boundary Violations in Psychoanalysis was lauded by the psychoanalytic community for its balanced, clear perspective professional boundary issues. It has since become the definitive text on the subject, and it is used in psychoanalytic seminars and courses all over the world. In this acclaimed volume, authors Glen O. Gabbard, M.D., and Eva P. Lester, M.D., shed light on the many controversies surrounding boundary issues and equip readers with strategies for recognizing and dealing with boundary problems on the part of both clinicians and patients. Using history, theory, case examples, and practical approaches, Drs. Gabbard and Lester help clinicians: Understand the history of boundary violations in psychoanalysis and see how transgressions spark and evolve within the vulnerable framework of psychoanalysis. Gain a psychoanalytic understanding of sexual and nonsexual boundary violations by both clients and their doctors, with many detailed case examples that illuminate the dynamics of these transgressions. Develop knowledge and awareness of posttermination boundaries and the role of boundaries in psychoanalytic supervision. Learn practical institutional responses to serious violations, including preventive techniques, assessment and rehabilitation approaches, and transference/countertransference management approaches. With information geared toward both clinicians and institutions, Boundaries and Boundary Violations in Psychoanalysis is an invaluable resource for understanding and treating those who have transgressed professional boundaries. More broadly, it will help all clinicians develop an awareness of emerging problems in the psychoanalytic relationship in time to take steps to avoid serious transgressions.

This refreshing new work is a practical overview of religious and spiritual issues in psychiatric assessment and treatment. 11 distinguished contributors assert that everyone has a worldview and that these religious and spiritual variables can be collaborative partners of science, bringing critical insight to assessment and healing to treatment. Unlike other works in this field, which focus primarily on spiritual experience, this clearly written volume focuses on the cognitive aspects of belief and how personal worldview affects the behavior of both patient and clinician. Informative case vignettes and discussions illustrate how assessment, formulation, and treatment principles can be incorporated within different worldviews, including practical clinical information on major faith traditions and on atheist and agnostic worldviews.

- Author(s): Victor Jeleniewski Seidler
- ISBN: 9780415370738
- Publisher: Routledge
- Edition: 1
- Date: 22 Dec 2005
- Pages: 212
Critically exploring the ways in which men and masculinities are commonly theorized, this multidisciplinary text opens up discussions on such relationships, and shows that, as with feminisms, there is a diversity of theoretical traditions. It draws on a variety of examples, and explores new directions in the complexities of diverse male identities and emotional lives across different histories, cultures and traditions.
Transforming Masculinities explores new ways of thinking men's power and the tensions men often feel in relation to prevailing cultural masculinities. Questioning the idea that masculinities can be understood exclusively as relationships of power, this book explores how men's power has to be understood in relation to specific cultures and traditions and how transformations in gender relations across generations mean we have to think in new ways about men, masculinities, cultures, bodies, sexualities and emotional life. Challenging the universal applicability of Western modelsof hegemonic masculinity Seidler suggests that we need to think differently about diverse cultural masculinities and recognize that men have to engage critically with their own cultural traditions to create more equal and loving relationships.
Written in a practical, versatile manner by an established author in this field, it points to new directions in thinking, and makes essential reading for advanced undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers in the fields of sociology, gender studies, politics, philosophy and psychology.

- Author(s): Judith Butler
- ISBN: 9780415969239
- Publisher: Routledge
- Edition: 1
- Date: 27 Aug 2004
- Pages: 288
Undoing Gender constitutes Judith Butler's recent reflections on gender and sexuality, focusing on new kinship, psychoanalysis and the incest taboo, transgender, intersex, diagnostic categories, social violence, and the tasks of social transformation. In terms that draw from feminist and queer theory, Butler considers the norms that govern--and fail to govern--gender and sexuality as they relate to the constraints on recognizable personhood. The book constitutes a reconsideration of her earlier view on gender performativity from
Gender Trouble . In this work, the critique of gender norms is clearly situated within the framework of human persistence and survival. And to "do" one's gender in certain ways sometimes implies "undoing" dominant notions of personhood. She writes about the "New Gender Politics" that has emerged in recent years, a combination of movements concerned with transgender, transsexuality, intersex, and their complex relations to feminist and queer theory.
