Throughout the biological world, bacteria thrive predominantly in surface attached, matrix enclosed, multicellular communities or biofilms, as opposed to isolated planktonic cells. This choice of lifestyle is not trivial, as it involves major shifts in the use of genetic information and cellular energy, and has profound consequences for bacterial physiology and survival. Growth within a biofilm can thwart immune function and antibiotic therapy and thereby complicate the treatment of infectious diseases, especially chronic and foreign device-associated infections. Modern studies of many important biofilms have advanced well beyond the descriptive stage, and have begun to provide molecular details of the structural, biochemical and genetic processes that drive biofilm formation and its dispersion. There is much diversity in the details of biofilm development among various species, but there are also commonalities. In most species, environmental and nutritional conditions greatly influence biofilm development. Similar kinds of adhesive molecules often promote biofilm formation in diverse species. Signaling and regulatory processes that drive biofilm development are often conserved, especially among related bacteria. Knowledge of such processes holds great promise for efforts to control biofilm growth and combat biofilm-associated infections.

Physical laws are for the most part expressed in terms of differential equations, and natural classes of these are in the form of conservation laws or of problems of the calculus of variations for an action functional. These problems can generally be posed as Hamiltonian systems, whether dynamical systems on finite dimensional phase space as in classical mechanics, or partial differential equations (PDE) which are naturally of infinitely many degrees of freedom. This volume is the collected and extended notes from the lectures on Hamiltonian dynamical systems and their applications that were given at the NATO Advanced Study Institute in Montreal in 2007. Many aspects of the modern theory of the subject were covered at this event, including low dimensional problems as well as the theory of Hamiltonian systems in infinite dimensional phase space; these are described in depth in this volume. Applications are also presented to several important areas of research, including problems in classical mechanics, continuum mechanics, and partial differential equations. These lecture notes cover many areas of recent mathematical progress in this field, including the new choreographies of many body orbits, the development of rigorous averaging methods which give hope for realistic long time stability results, the development of KAM theory for partial differential equations in one and in higher dimensions, and the new developments in the long outstanding problem of Arnold diffusion. It also includes other contributions to celestial mechanics, to control theory, to partial differential equations of fluid dynamics, and to the theory of adiabatic invariants. In particular the last several years has seen major progress on the problems of KAM theory and Arnold diffusion; accordingly, this volume includes lectures on recent developments of KAM theory in infinite dimensional phase space, and descriptions of Arnold diffusion using variational methods as well as geometrical approaches to the gap problem. The subjects in question involve by necessity some of the most technical aspects of analysis coming from a number of diverse fields. Before the present volume, there has not been one text nor one course of study in which advanced students or experienced researchers from other areas can obtain an overview and background to enter this research area. This volume offers this, in an unparalleled series of extended lectures encompassing this wide spectrum of topics in PDE and dynamical systems.

From Health and medicine are among the most common subjects leading patrons to the library. Organized by body system, this four-volume encyclopedia provides basic overviews of the human body and the diseases and conditions that may affect its function. Volume 1 covers the ears, nose, mouth, and throat; the eyes; the integumentary system; the nervous system; the musculoskeletal system; and pain and pain management. Volume 2 is the cardiovascular system, the blood and lymph, the pulmonary system, the immune system and allergies, infectious diseases, and cancer. The gastrointestinal system, the endocrine system, the urinary system, the reproductive system, and psychiatric disorders and psychological conditions comprise volume 3, and volume 4 has sections for topics such as preventive and alternative medicine, drugs, nutrition, and emergency first aid. Appendixes offer information about vital signs, advance directives, and medical specialties as well as a glossary of medical terms and abbreviations, a time line of modern medicine, and concise, notable biographies. Each volume has its own index, and there is a cumulative index in volume 4. Within the volumes, each section begins with diagrams and an overview of the anatomy and physiology of the organ system. Alphabetical entries covering individual topics follow. Entries for diseases and conditions include causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment options, prognosis, risk factors, and preventive measures. Those for surgical procedures cover an explanation of the procedure, risks and complications, outlook, and lifestyle modifications. Entries about drugs discuss the type of medication, how it works, common uses, and risks and side effects. Those for diagnostic tests cover the reasons for the test, preparations, how the test is done, recovery, and risks and complications. All entries have cross-references to related material within the same section. The entries in the emergency-first-aid section contain instructional material, but users will need to take a class to perform most of these techniques effectively. The information about what to tell a dispatcher when calling 911, how to protect oneself, and what not to do at an accident scene is very useful. This encyclopedia is a good choice for libraries that do not own the more comprehensive Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine (3d ed., 2006). The organization may be confusing for users accustomed to the traditional alphabetical format, but the index will help them locate the material that they need. Bibel, Barbara

From Library Journal In this collection of short articles, Noll (psychology, Allentown Coll.; The Jung Cult: Origins of Charismatic Movement) explores the history, etiology, biology, and treatment of psychotic disorders. The encyclopedia's positive features include excellent references for further reading at the end of each article, a good bibliography, appendixes listing the North American and European diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia, and sources of further information on schizophrenia. But by Noll's admission, the emphasis here is almost exclusively on schizophrenia, with bipolar disorder and other psychoses receiving scant coverage. While the little snippets on such topics as "Utica Cribs" and "Vampirism, Clinical" are interesting, it is hard to imagine the reference search that would lead to them. In general, this seems like the sort of book that would be handiest in the practitioner or scholar's office. For larger academic collections.DMary Ann Hughes, Neill P.L., Pullman, WA

--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From Schizophrenia has plagued, mystified, and baffled the human race for centuries. At various times it was attributed to cosmic forces overtaking one's soul or being possessed by Satan. Finally, through the study of psychiatry in the nineteenth century, schizophrenia was identified and recognized as an illness. Recent DNA research has recognized a genetic link to mental illness, but the specific cause of schizophrenia still remains to be identified.
The latest edition of the Encyclopedia of Schizophrenia and Other Psychotic Disorders has been revised and expanded to reflect the latest (post-1999) scientific and scholarly research. Biologically related schizophrenic disorders, genetics, antipsychotic drug treatments, and pathophysiology are a few of the topics explored in the more than 600 entries. Among the new entries are Brief psychotic disorder, Electronarcosis therapy, Glutamate hypothesis, and Substance-induced psychotic disorder. In addition, author Noll has taken advantage of new scholarship on the history of psychiatry "to place the science of schizophrenia into its historical context" and revise entries such as Dementia praecox. Many entries discussed separately in previous volumes have been combined in this volume to provide clearer, more thorough explanations. Appendixes list diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia and information for pertinent organizations.
As with both previous editions, as well as other volumes in the Facts On File Library of Health and Living, the language is clear, making this volume equally suitable for use by patients, scholars, and general readers. A solid addition for health collections. Ann Cohen

We are witnessing the important developments of complex dynamic systems which include the areas of telecommunications, manufacturing, transportation or power networks, and the rapidly emerging research area seeking to understand and analyze biological systems using the tools of systems theory. In addition, countries' economies are increasingly dependent in the ongoing globalization of economic exchanges. This is in large part made possible by the massive development of information technologies, and the ubiquity of communication systems which permit the existence of global marketplaces.
ANALYSIS, CONTROL AND OPTIMIZATION OF COMPLEX DYNAMIC SYSTEMS gathers in a single volume a spectrum of complex dynamic systems related papers written by experts in their fields, and strongly representative of current research trends. Complex systems present important challenges, in great part due to their sheer size which makes it difficult to grasp their dynamic behavior, optimize their operations, or study their reliability. Yet, we live in a world where, due to increasing inter-dependencies and networking of systems, complexity has become the norm. With this in mind, the volume comprises two parts. The first part is dedicated to a spectrum of complex problems of decision and control encountered in the area of production and inventory systems. The second part is dedicated to large scale or multi-agent system problems occurring in other areas of engineering such as telecommunication and electric power networks, as well as more generic context.

An exciting new development has taken place in the digital era that has captured the imagination and talent of researchers around the globe -
wavelet image compression . This technology has deep roots in theories of vision, and promises performance improvements over all other compression methods, such as those based on Fourier transforms, vectors quantizers, fractals, neural nets, and many others. It is this revolutionary new technology that is presented in
Wavelet Image and Video Compression , in a form that is accessible to the largest audience possible.
Wavelet Image and Video Compression is divided into four parts. Part I,
Background Material , introduces the basic mathematical structures that underly image compression algorithms with the intention of providing an easy introduction to the mathematical concepts that are prerequisites for the remainder of the book. It explains such topics as change of bases, scalar and vector quantization, bit allocation and rate-distortion theory, entropy coding, the discrete-cosine transform, wavelet filters and other related topics. Part II,
Still Image Coding , presents a spectrum of wavelet still image coding techniques. Part III,
Special Topics in Still Image Coding , provides a variety of example coding schemes with a special flavor in either approach or application domain. Part IV,
Video Coding , examines wavelet and pyramidal coding techniques for video data.
Wavelet Image and Video Compression serves as an excellent reference and may be used as a text for advanced courses covering the subject.

This extraordinary handbook was inspired by the distinctive concerns of anthropologists and others who film people in the field. The authors cover the practical, technical, and theoretical aspects of filming, from fundraising to exhibition, in lucid and complete detail--information never before assembled in one place. The first section discusses filmmaking styles and the assumptions that frequently hide unacknowledged behind them, as well as the practical and ethical issues involved in moving from fieldwork to filmmaking. The second section concisely and clearly explains the technical aspects, including how to select and use equipment, how to shoot film and video, and the reasons for choosing one or the other, and how to record sound. Finally, the third section outlines the entire process of filmmaking: preproduction, production, postproduction, and distribution. Filled with useful illustrations and covering documentary and ethnographic filmmaking of all kinds,
Cross-Cultural Filmmaking will be as essential to the anthropologist or independent documentarian on location as to the student in the classroom.

The volume develops a thorough theory of singular fibers of generic differentiable maps. This is the first work that establishes the foundational framework of the global study of singular differentiable maps of negative codimension from the viewpoint of differential topology. The book contains not only a general theory, but also some explicit examples together with a number of very concrete applications.
This is a very interesting subject in differential topology, since it shows a beautiful interplay between the usual theory of singularities of differentiable maps and the geometric topology of manifolds.

In this volume readers will find for the first time a detailed account of the theory of symplectic reduction by stages, along with numerous illustrations of the theory. Special emphasis is given to group extensions, including a detailed discussion of the Euclidean group, the oscillator group, the Bott-Virasoro group and other groups of matrices. Ample background theory on symplectic reduction and cotangent bundle reduction in particular is provided. Novel features of the book are the inclusion of a systematic treatment of the cotangent bundle case, including the identification of cocycles with magnetic terms, as well as the general theory of singular reduction by stages.
