The creation of new business organizations for economic prosperity is the keystone of commercial development. The study of this process has occupied the minds of scholars for centuries and the need to move from theories of entrepreneurship to the actual 'doing' of entrepreneurship is intense. Theorizing about entrepreneurship has been done across many disciplines, but what can be taken from the existing traditions to contribute to our teaching and learning experiences?
Written for educators, researchers, and practitioners, Entrepreneurship: The Way Ahead offers insight and perspective on entrepreneurship from the foremost academic leaders in the field. Taking a contemporary approach to entrepreneurial processes, the book considers how the convergence of individual, opportunity and environment ultimately lead to success or failure, while illuminating the true relationship between entrepreneurship and technological and social issues. It also explores innovations and developments in entrepreneurship education and training, while evaluating existing literature and research.
Entrepreneurship: The Way Ahead represents some of the most advanced thinking in the field of entrepreneurship, providing an essential grounding of new theory for researchers and entrepreneurial managers alike.

This is the first of three volumes collecting the original and now classic works in topology written in the 50s 60s. The original methods and constructions from these works are properly documented for the first time in this book. No existing book covers the beautiful ensemble of methods created in topology starting from approximately 1950, that is, from Serre's celebrated Singular homologies of fibre spaces. This is the translation of the Russian edition published in 2005 with one entry (Milnor s lectures on the h-cobordism) omitted.

Standard probability theory has been an enormously successful contribution to modern science. However, from many perspectives it is too narrow as a general theory of uncertainty, particularly for issues involving subjective uncertainty. This first-of-its-kind book is primarily based on qualitative approaches to probabilistic-like uncertainty, and includes qualitative theories for the standard theory as well as several of its generalizations. One of these generalizations produces a belief function composed of two functions: a probability function that measures the probabilistic strength of an uncertain event, and another function that measures the amount of ambiguity or vagueness of the event. Another unique approach of the book is to change the event space from a boolean algebra, which is closely linked to classical propositional logic, to a different event algebra that is closely linked to a well-studied generalization of classical propositional logic known as intuitionistic logic. Together, these new qualitative theories succeed where the standard probability theory fails by accounting for a number of puzzling empirical findings in the psychology of human probability judgments and decision making.

From Publishers Weekly
Popular Zen philospher Watts, whose bestsellers on oriental mysticism helped create a counterculture, privately insisted that he was a rogue, a fake and entertainer. Without either glorifying or sensationalizing Watts, this superb, intimately detailed biography assesses the impact of a flawed guru, the shy English-born scholar who, by the "summer of love" in 1967, had become a flower child brimming with confidence and flowing hair. Heavy drinking fueled by a gnawing sense of loneliness, three marriages replete with sexual adventures, writing and lecturing to support his seven children marked the life of a very human sage who seems an odd mixture of wisdom and childishness. Watts sought to reawaken Christians to the "innerness" of their religion; he also believed that assimilating Asian wisdom could help Westerners heal their schizoid mentality. Furlong ( Merton: A Biography shows how his ideas evolved and suggests their relevance for a new generation of readers. Photos. (October

From Library Journal
This first biography of the British expatriate turned Sixties counterculture guru, philosophical entertainer, and Zen popularizer is highly entertaining. Drawing on extensive interviews with surviving family members and making balanced use of Watts's amusing but selectively incomplete autobiography, Furlong paints a compelling portrait of a complex, brilliant man who wandered through three marriages and several careers while maintaining a lifelong involvement with Asian spirituality. Included are accounts of Watts's early education, his rise to prominence as an author, his experiments with psychedelic drugs, and his end as an exhausted alcoholic. Furlong successfully re-creates a colorful slice of recent American popular history through the life history of one of its famous protagonists. Paul E. Lively political and public debates on war and morality have been a feature of the post-Cold War world. The Price of Peace argues that a re-examination of the just war tradition is therefore required. The authors suggest that despite fluctuations and transformations in international politics, the just war tradition continues to be relevant. However they argue that it needs to be reworked to respond to the new challenges to international security represented by the end of the Cold War and the impact of terrorism. With an interdisciplinary and transatlantic approach, this volume provides a dialogue between theological, political, military and public actors. By articulating what a reconstituted just war tradition might mean in practice, it also aims to assist policy-makers and citizens in dealing with the ethical dilemmas of war.

Many technical issues like speech recognition and signal processing have to be addressed for the design of speech communication systems. However, before designing a speech application starts, 3 key questions that have to be answered: who will use it, why and how often? Only if the designer is clear about these questions, he is able to provide a maximum of target group orientation.

This book gives focuses on these high-level questions and gives a criteria when and how to design speech systems. After an introduction, the state of the art in modern voice user interfaces is displayed. The following parts of the book evolve criteria for designing and evaluating successful voice user interfaces. In the last chapter, outlines and trends of this fast growing area are displayed.

For many consumers, taking one or more dietary supplements is a natural addition to a healthy lifestyle. The decision to take a dietary supplement may be based on the recommendation of a doctor, a dietitian, or a friend. Television, newspaper, magazine, or website stories, and persuasive marketing materials in the pharmacy or supermarket may sway buyers.

Information regarding dietary supplements abounds but can be misleading or contradictory. Understanding Dietary Supplements is a guide to making informed choices.

Included here, the full text of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994--the model for the FDA's regulation of dietary supplements--affords guidance to deciphering labels and determining value. Understanding Dietary Supplements is an easy-to-use guide to a much demanded but often misunderstood group of products.

  • Publisher: Cambridge University Press
  • Date: 23 Oct 2006

In this new introductory textbook to Kant's Critique of Pure Reason, Jill Vance Buroker explains the role of this first Critique in Kant's Critical project and offers a line-by-line reading of the major arguments in the text. She situates Kant's views in relation both to his predecessors and to contemporary debates, explaining his Critical philosophy as a response to the failure of rationalism and the challenge of skepticism. Paying special attention to Kant's notoriously difficult vocabulary, she explains the strengths and weaknesses of his arguments, while leaving the final assessment up to the reader. Intended to be read alongside the Critique (also published by Cambridge University Press as part of The Cambridge Edition of the Works of Immanuel Kant in Translation), this guide is accessible to readers with little background in the history of philosophy, but should also be a valuable resource for more advanced students.

Sometimes called "cozy murder mysteries," traditional British detective stories like this one are as compelling in audio form as on the page, especially when delivered in the proper English tones of actor Hugh Fraser. In this mystery, dentist Dr. Morley is found shot not long after Hercule Poirot himself has paid a visit. When Morley's last patient also turns up dead and the prime minister is shot at, Poirot tries to determine the connection between the good doctor and a possible government plot.
