Let me offer you five OCR-ed books on phrasal verbs and idioms: 1.“Making Headway - Phrasal Verbs and Idioms. Upper-Intermediate”. 2.“Making Headway - Phrasal Verbs and Idioms. Advanced”. 3.“Making Sense of Phrasal Verbs", By Martin Shovel. 4.“Idioms For Everyday Use”, by Milada Broukal. 5.“Speak English Like An American - Idioms and vocabulary”, by Amy Gillett. These OCR-ed versions had already been published in the correspondent separate topics. In those topics (which you can easily find on this site, using “Search” with key words), you may also find original PDF files, if they are still there, and audio files, if applicable. I’ve just decided to collect and publish these five books in one bundle to make sure you didn’t miss the links among the numerous comments in the original topics. These files had been prepared by me by OCR-ing and spell-checking the original scans. A “Table of contents” (TOC) had also been added to each file. I would like to thank the original posters for their scans, which made further improvement possible. The password to the archive is as usual: englishtips.org Enjoy! N.B.: The archive is prepared with WinRAR 3.70, - you might need the same version (or higher) in order to extract the files. Read more...

Standard English has evolved and developed in many ways over the past hundred years. From pronunciation to vocabulary to grammar, this concise survey clearly documents the recent history of Standard English. Drawing on large amounts of authentic corpus data, it shows how we can track ongoing changes to the language, and demonstrates each of the major developments that have taken place. As well as taking insights from a vast body of literature, Christian Mair presents the results of his own cutting-edge research, revealing some important changes which have not been previously documented. He concludes by exploring how social and cultural factors, such as the American influence on British English, have affected Standard English in recent times. Authoritative, informative and engaging, this book will be essential reading for anyone interested in language change in progress, particularly those working on English, and will be welcomed by students, researchers and language teachers alike. Over the years, pragmatics – the study of the use and meaning of utterances to their situations – has become a more and more important branch of linguistics, as the inadequacies of a purely formalist, abstract approach to the study of language have become more evident. This book presents a rhetorical model of pragmatics: that is, a model which studies linguistic communication in terms of communicative goals and principles of ‘good communicative behaviour’. In this respect, Geoffrey Leech argues for a rapprochement between linguistics and the traditional discipline of rhetoric. He does not reject the Chomskvan revolution of linguistics, but rather maintains that the language system in the abstract – i.e. the ‘grammar’ broadly in Chomsky’s sense – must be studied in relation to a fully developed theory of language use. There is therefore a division of labour between grammar and rhetoric, or (in the study of meaning) between semantics and pragmatics. The book’s main focus is thus on the development of a model of pragmatics within an overall functional model of language. In this it builds on the speech avct theory of Austin and Searle, and the theory of conversational implicature of Grice, but at the same time enlarges pragmatics to include politeness, irony, phatic communion, and other social principles of linguistic behaviour. The studies in this volume explore needs analysis in the public, vocational and academic sectors, in contexts ranging from service encounters in coffee shops to foreign language needs assessment in the U.S. military. In each chapter, the authors explicitly discuss the methodology they employed, and in some cases also offer research findings on that methodology. Several studies are task-based. Contributions include work on English and other languages in both second and foreign language settings, as well as a comprehensive overview of methodological issues in needs analysis by the editor. What Makes The Wizard of Oz Vocabulary Builder Superior to All Other Vocabulary Builders? 1. The vocabulary words appear in the context of a continuous story. You'll enjoy what you read and you'll remember what the words mean. (By the way, L. Frank Baum's original story was written for children and is rather tame. This version, written for teenagers and adults, is far more thrilling, scary, and intense.) 2. The definitions are user-friendly. Let's say, for example, that you don't know the meaning of the word "disdain." When you look it up in a dictionary, you find that it means "scorn; contempt." You don't know what those words mean either, so you look up "scorn," only to learn that it means "disdain; contempt." Then you look up "contempt." You guessed it: "disdain; scorn." The definitions in The Wizard of Oz Vocabulary Builder are very easy to understand; they never use words you don't know. 3. The illustrative sentences are a hoot. Author Phillips searched the globe looking for the world's best illustrative sentences. These sentences not only make the word in question unforgettable, but they entertain you (some of them are laugh-out-loud funny) or inform you (many teach you something interesting or even astonishing about history, politics, literature, science, music, or art!). 4. The Wizard of Oz Vocabulary Builder teaches vocabulary with a three-pronged approach. First, you read the word in context, in the story. Next, you read the word's definition. Fina Read more...

Oxford is one of the world’s great universities but this has not meant that it is exempt from pressures for change. On various fronts it has been required to meet the challenges that universities almost worldwide have to face. Given the retrenchment of public funding, especially to support undergraduate teaching, it has been required to augment its financial base, while at the same time deciding how to respond to pressure from successive governments determined to use higher education to achieve their own policy goals. While still consistently ranked as a world-class university, it has to decide how it is to acquire the funding to continue in this league, or whether this goal is worth pursuing. Oxford is a collegiate university, which means its colleges share with the University responsibility for the delivery of its central goals. Is this balance of authority shifting over time? If so, how is this to be accounted for, and what are the likely outcomes for the collegiate university? This book sets out to address these questions and arrives at an essentially positive conclusion. Oxford will continue to remain an effective collegiate university and, while its identity will change, its central character will persist. Read more...

Where do dialects differ from Standard English, and why are they so remarkably resilient? This new study argues that commonly used verbs that deviate from Standard English for the most part have a long pedigree. Analysing the language use of over 120 dialect speakers, Lieselotte Anderwald demonstrates that not only are speakers justified historically in using these verbs, systematically these non-standard forms actually make more sense. By constituting a simpler system, they are generally more economical than their Standard English counterparts. Drawing on data collected from the Freiburg English Dialect Corpus (FRED), this innovative and engaging study comes directly from the forefront of this field, and will be of great interest to students and researchers of English language and linguistics, morphology and syntax. The Language Hacking Guide explains exactly what you need to do to speak a language quickly. Rather than read through the guide to find out my one major ‘secret’, I can tell you right now. You need to speak the language from day one. No years of studying grammar, no expensive and complicated software, no “magic pill” to master a language while you sleep, you just need to speak it. Speak it regularly, speak it confidently, and speak it immediately. The more you speak, the quicker you will improve. Even though this may be obvious, how you actually speak a language that you have just started to learn seems almost impossible to many people. So they’ll wait until they are “ready”. That wait may be years, or they may simply never even try. But it’s not actually that hard! That’s what the Language Hacking Guide is about. NOTE: This edition of the Language Hacking Guide (English) has been translated into French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Polish, so if you speak one of these languages you can use the guide to practice your target language (all of the files in these six languages are included in this upload). British culture today is the product of a shifting combination of tradition and experimentation, national identity and regional and ethnic diversity. These distinctive tensions are expressed in a range of cultural arenas, such as art, sport, journalism, fashion, education, and race. This Companion addresses these and other major aspects of British culture, and offers a sophisticated understanding of what it means to study and think about the diverse cultural landscapes of contemporary Britain. Each contributor looks at the language through which culture is formed and expressed, the political and institutional trends that shape culture, and at the role of culture in daily life. This interesting and informative account of modern British culture embraces controversy and debate, and never loses sight of the fact that Britain and Britishness must always be understood in relation to the increasingly international context of globalisation. For years there has been insufficient provision of specific material for practice with sentences. We speak mostly in sentences, not in individual words or in unrelated verb-parts or in tricky linguistic tests. Our speech and writing are creative-the putting-together of words into sentences. And our linguistic comprehension is mostly of the meanings of sentences rather than individual words. In contemporary written and oral examinations in English more and more attention is being given to sentence-construc¬tion than to filling in blanks in sentences already constructed by the examiner. This book aims at filling a gap. It aims at giving plenty of practice in understanding, constructing, and using sentences, and in selecting sentences for certain circumstances. It is intended for students who have got beyond the elementary stage and are at intermediate and advanced levels. It is designed for use by students who are at the stages of the Cambridge Examinations for foreign learners of English, and the similar Pitman Institute Examinations, and the ARELS Oral Examinations. It should also be useful for Common¬wealth students studying for 'O' and 'A' levels of English. The book should be helpful both for classwork and, with a key, for students working on their own. A balance has been kept between dialogues, continuous passages, exercises of related sentences, and exercises of miscellaneous sentences. In only a very few sections, dealing with certain points, is the student aske Read more...

This introduction to the role of information structure in grammar discusses a wide range of phenomena on the syntax-information structure interface. It examines theories of information structure and considers their effectiveness in explaining whether and how information structure maps onto syntax in discourse. Professor Erteschik-Shir begins by discussing the basic notions and properties of information structure, such as topic and focus, and considers their properties from different theoretical perspectives. She covers definitions of topic and focus, architectures of grammar, information structure, word order, the interface between lexicon and information structure, and cognitive aspects of information structure. In her balanced and readable account, the author critically compares the effectiveness of different theoretical approaches and assesses the value of insights drawn from work in processing and on language acquisition, variation, and universals. This book will appeal to graduate students of syntax and semantics in departments of linguistics, philosophy, and cognitive science. Read more...

This book fills a longstanding need for a basic introduction to Cognitive Grammar that is current, authoritative, comprehensive, and approachable. It presents a synthesis that draws together and refines the descriptive and theoretical notions developed in this framework over the course of three decades. In a unified manner, it accommodates both the conceptual and the social-interactive basis of linguistic structure, as well as the need for both functional explanation and explicit structural description. Starting with the fundamentals, essential aspects of the theory are systematically laid out with concrete illustrations and careful discussion of their rationale. Among the topics surveyed are conceptual semantics, grammatical classes, grammatical constructions, the lexicon-grammar continuum characterized as assemblies of symbolic structures (form-meaning pairings), and the usage-based account of productivity, restrictions, and well-formedness. The theory's central claim - that grammar is inherently meaningful - is thereby shown to be viable. The framework is further elucidated through application to nominal structure, clause structure, and complex sentences. These are examined in broad perspective, with exemplification from English and numerous other languages. In line with the theory's general principles, they are discussed not only in terms of their structural characterization, but also their conceptual value and functional motivation. Other matters explored include disc Read more...

Kate Burridge follows the international success of Blooming English with another entertaining excursion into the ever-changing nature of the complex and captivating English language. If language is a glorious garden, filled with exotic hybrids as well as traditional heritage specimens, then weeds will also thrive on its fertile grounds. Linguistic weeds may be defined as pronunciations or constructions that are no longer used. For example, Burridge points out how "aint" or double negatives were at one time quite acceptable in everyday speaking and writing but are now classified as "weeds" that should no longer have a place in our vocabulary. And, as she so deftly accomplished in Blooming English, Burridge goes on here to further celebrate our capacity to play with language, and to examine the ways we use it: in slang and jargon, swearing, speaking the unspeakable, or concealing unpleasant or inconvenient facts. In this new volume she gives us another fun and informative work for enjoyable browsing; for discovering intriguing trivia about language, history, and social customs; and for employing as a peerless weapon in word games. Kate Burridge is the Chair of Linguistics at Monash University and a regular presenter of segments on the Australian Broadcast Company. Read more...
