As industries worldwide move toward consolidation, niche companies need to take advantage of strategies that are forward-thinking and anticipate new trends. Beating the Global Consolidation Endgame identifies nine key strategies that niche companies must master in order to outperform their markets and gain the largest benefits from consolidation. It draws from a landmark study conducted by global management consulting firm A.T. Kearney of more than 600,000 small to mid-sized niche companies over a 15-year period.
A.T. Kearney thought leaders Dr. Fritz Kroeger, Dr. Andrej Vizjak, and Michael Moriarty reveal nine successful Endgame niche strategies while explaining how these strategies are most viable at certain points during consolidation. In order to time the strategies accurately, all decision makers must know what stage of industry consolidation they're in, along with the implications of each stage. This ensures a company's survival and success against global consolidators.
Taking you through the Merger Endgame Theory lifecycle, the authors show you how to develop stable niche strategies by:
Determining your industry's Endgame position and expected evolution of consolidation in coming years
Identifying industry sectors with comparable models to illuminate strategic success factors for your sector
Knowing the strengths and weaknesses of Endgame consolidation winners and losers
Spotting potential market splits and new configurations for the value-creation chain

In Investing from the Top Down, Anthony Crescenzi, esteemed financial author and chief bond strategist for Miller Tabak and Co., explains how to develop new, highly effective investment strategies by taking a macro view of the factors shaping industries and markets. Emphasizing the importance of economic and market cycles (as opposed to a bottom-up approach, which places valuation ahead of the big picture) top-down investing is better suited for today's global economy and will likely become the dominant strategy in the future.
Crescenzi provides more than fifty tools for analyzing domestic and international trends and indicators, such as GDP growth rates, inflation, interest and exchange rates, and energy prices. He then explains how to narrow your search down to region, total sales, price levels, competition, and entry/exit from market to make astute buying and selling decisions. Crescenzi explains why “thematic” investing is the ideal approach for:
Taking full advantage of exchange traded funds (ETFs)
Using the policies of central banks to steer your investments
Designing diversification best suited for the long term
Using sector selection to insulate your portfolio from risk
Maximizing profits when market sentiment spikes or plummets
Investing from the Top Down covers every major financial instrument and investment choice, from bonds, treasuries, and currencies to real estate, private equity, and emerging markets. Crescenzi concludes with an extensive list of Read more...

The key challenges facing China in the next two decades derive from the ongoing process of urbanization. China`s urbanization rate in 2005 was about 43%. Over the next 10-15 years, China s urbanization rate is expected to rise to well over 50% adding an additional 200 million mainly rural migrants to the current urban population of 560 million. How China copes with such a large migration flow will strongly influence rural-urban inequality, the pace at which urban centers expand their economic performance, and the urban environment. The growing population will necessitate a big push strategy to maintain high rate of investment in housing and the urban physical infrastructure and urban services. To finance such expansion will require a significant strengthening and diversification of China s financial system. Growing cities will greatly increase consumption of energy and water. Containing this without at the same time constraining the economic performance of cities or the improvement in the standards of living will call for enlightened policies, strategies, careful urban planning, and significant technological advances. China Urbanizes: Consequences, Strategies, and Policies identifies the key developments to watch and discusses the policies that would affect the course as well as the fruitfulness of change. International migration has become a central element of international relations and global integration due to its rapidly increasing economic, social, and cultural impact in both source and destination countries. This book provides new evidence on the impact of migration and remittances on several development indicators, including innovative thinking about the nexus between migration and birth rates. In addition, the book identifies the effect of host country policies on migration flows, examines the determinants of return and repeat migration, and explores the degree of success of return migrants upon return to their country of origin. Now fully revised and updated, The Beginner's Guide to Financial Spread Betting provides an essential grounding in the basic principles of spread betting. Spread betting was once the domain of institutional investors, city traders and high rollers. Not anymore. You would now be hard-pressed to find any other form of trading that allows such a scale of return and has such wide appeal. The popularity of spread betting has increased massively over the last few years, with thousands of new traders entering the market every month. And, whilst the basic principles of spread betting are simple, there is jargon to overcome and some important lessons to be learnt if the novice trader is going to make the most of the opportunities available. However, these huge opportunities do carry some risk and this book describes how it is vital that traders manage those risks and understand how to minimise them wherever possible. Read more...

Corporate actions have been sidelined for too long and deserve to be treated with more respect. No type of investment security can be fully understood without knowledge of its corporate actions. They have implications for the sustainability of an investment's performance but repeatedly more beguiling investment preoccupations put them into the shade. Together with bank clearing and exchange settlement systems, the administration of corporate actions is one of the key co-operative functions tying our highly competitive global finance industry together. In the financial markets of the developed world the efficiency and 'risklessness' of corporate actions processing is entirely taken for granted. Yet the volume of complex corporate actions and a common sense estimate of the likelihood of mistakes occurring suggest that industry practitioners and investing clients may be deluding themselves. If knowledge of corporate actions brings us to fully understand the securities they relate to, some familiarity with corporate actions processing is important in gaining an insight into the workings of the securities industry as a system. With the exceptions of accountancy and financial regulation, no other activity involves as many kinds of investment industry participant as corporate actions processing. Read more...

Challenge the normally accepted limits of "what is possible" in business. Entrepreneurship is usually associated with individuals and small companies. Yet it is the successful entrepreneurs who develop businesses into large corporations - their spirit, leadership and determination lead to great things. In this book John Forbat, serial entreupreneuer, covers: characteristics you will need to succeed; issues that start-ups face; The TASK principle and the 4 T's; management and company politics; spotting unrecognised markets; convincing people that the "cure for which there is no ill" does have an ill; the importance of R and D and how it doesn't have to cost thousands; how necessity can be a real mother of invention; and much more! Also included are case studies which provide fascinating insights into how the author: operated a company on two continents (without capital!); turned a company facing insolvency into a takeover target; and managed to turn a good business plan and a relatively small amount of credit into a company with profits of $200,000 p.a. The down to earth ideas and experiences related in this book make it essential reading for all budding entrepreneurs and those already in business. Read more...

This exciting volume presents cutting-edge developments in high frequency financial econometrics, spanning a diverse range of topics: market microstructure, tick-by-tick data, bond and foreign exchange markets and large dimensional volatility modelling. The chapters on market microstructure deal with liquidity, asymmetries of information, and limit order aggressiveness in pure limit order book markets. The chapters on tick-by-tick data present statistical techniques for the analysis of the discrete nature of price movements, the intraday seasonal patterns of financial durations, and the joint probability law of prices, volume and durations. Bond markets are brought into focus through the analysis of macroeconomic announcements in the future bond market as a function of the business cycle. Exchange markets are examined from two perspectives: the study of the impact of information arrival on exchange rate volatility and the uncovering of chartist patterns in the euro/dollar exchange rate. Last, dynamic modelling of large dimensional covariance matrices is also presented. Shedding light on some of the most relevant open questions in the analysis of high frequency data, this volume will be of interest to graduate students, researchers and industry professionals. Prepublication Praise:
"The authors have shaped the field of high-frequency data in finance; the text provides an excellent summary of their pioneering work."
--PAUL EMBRECHTS, Professor of Mathematics, ETH Zurich
"An Introduction to High-Frequency Finance by the research team from Olsen and Associates is an amazing presentation of their work over the last decade and a half examining high-frequency, primarily currency, data. The volume includes details of data handling, filtering methods, scaling procedures, volatility models, automatic market making and trading rules that for many years were proprietary information. I highly recommend the book for anyone using tick data."
--ROBERT ENGLE, Department of Finance, Stern School, NYU and Department of Economics, University of California, San Diego
"At long last, the study of financial prices is moving beyond convenient oversimplifications. For providing much of the best data and an indispensable bridge between the financial and academic communities, this flowering is deeply indebted to the group led by Dr. Richard Olsen.
This group and its alumni have also analyzed their own data. That work, which I often quote, has now been collected and extended in a book. I shall wear it out by constant use and it is a delight to recommend it to the emerging rational finance community."

While many of us will recognize a good, well-thought-out marketing campaign when we see one, the single, basic truth about world-class marketing campaign development is that it is easy to say, but hard to do. It is hard to do because we all like to take short-cuts. I hear the lament all too often: "I'm over-worked don't have the time to think strategically" or "Planning is overrated. I just need to get these projects done." As a result, we take short-cuts like "ready, fire, aim." Lack of planning is the slippery slope that leads to wasteful marketing. Then one day we get the call from the corner office to come and explain why our marketing efforts did not produce the desired results.
Luckily, architecting world-class campaigns is achievable for any marketing team. Successful marketing requires following a disciplined, systematic approach Read more...

There is a group of men, who, for over 200 years, have been controlling the destiny of the United States. In 1910, they secretly met on a small island off the coast of Georgia. Their plan: to formulate a program to destroy the financial structure of America. To do that, they pushed Woodrow Wilson into the presidency; and in 1913, Wilson signed into law, the Federal Reserve Act and the Federal Income Tax. In 1921, these international bankers established the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). The U.S. Government took advantage of the CFR’s experience in finance and foreign affairs, and one of their study groups, the Advisory Committee on Post-War Foreign Policy, became part of the State Department in 1941. The secret goal of this study group was to condition the Congress, and the people of this country to accept the establishment of the United Nations (UN). The UN, initiated in 1945, does not seek to promote world peace and cooperation– it was the first step towards a one-world government, which is now referred to as the New World Order. The CFR is a subsidiary of the Round Table Organization, a group of British elitists controlled by the most powerful family in the world– the Rothschilds, who, through an organization known as the Illuminati, have been controlling world events since 1776, and are now poised for the establishment of a one-world government- with them in control. It contains a conceptual discussion of the challenges, both methodological and practical, implementing GIS applications for assessing economic and planning activities in peripheral regions including developing countries.
The book examines how spatial clustering concepts, spatial models, and related visualization techniques (GIS) can be applied to the case of economic development in rural environments. It discusses methodological issues including data and analysis issues. It also examines the differential growth patterns of counties within city-systems of the Western United States from the date of county formation until the late 20th century, using an historical GIS and historical US Census data. Aid for Trade (AfT) has become a major item in the international trade and development discourse. This is in response to concerns expressed by developing countries in the aftermath of the formation of the WTO over their capacities to implement the WTO agreements and undertake necessary adjustments to benefit from emerging trade opportunities. The transformation of that concern into the aid for trade initiative became salient during the course of the Doha round of multilateral trade negotiations over adjustment and competitiveness challenges facing developing countries, arising from, inter alia, preference erosion, textile quota elimination, implementing existing and future WTO Agreements, as well as their inherent lack of supply capacity and trade-related infrastructure deficits and deficiencies. Subsequently the Sixth WTO Ministerial Declaration endorsed the concept of aid for trade and mandated the establishment of a Task Force to operationalize the concept and the Director General of the WTO to consult on financing for the initiative. The WTO Task Force was composed, met and issued a report with recommendations that was endorsed by WTO members. Various initiatives by UN agencies including UNCTAD and regional commissions have been implemented to sustain the momentum towards the operationalization and implementation of the aid for trade initiative. The UN system is supportive of the aid for trade initiative and its developmental goals, as committed in the 2005 World Summit O Read more...

The last few years have been a watershed for the commodities, cash and derivatives industry. New regulations and products have led to an explosion in the commodities markets, creating a new asset for investors that includes hedge funds as well as University endowments, and has resulted in a spectacular growth in spot and derivative trading.
This book covers hard and soft commodities (energy, agriculture and metals) and analyses:
Economic and geopolitical issues in commodities markets
Commodity price and volume risk
Stochastic modelling of commodity spot prices and forward curves
Real options valuation and hedging of physical assets in the energy industry
It is required reading for energy companies and utilities practitioners, commodity cash and derivatives traders in investment banks, the Agrifood business, Commodity Trading Advisors (CTAs) and Hedge Funds.
In Commodities and Commodity Derivatives, Helyette Geman shows her powerful command of the subject by combining a rigorous development of its mathematical modelling with a compact institutional presentation of the arcane characteristics of commodities that makes the complex analysis of commodities derivative securities accessible to both the academic and practitioner who wants a deep foundation and a breadth of different market applications. In Commodity Derivatives: Markets and Applications, Neil Schofield provides a complete and accessible reference for anyone working in, or studying commodity markets and their associated derivatives. Dealing primarily with over the counter structures, the book provides extensive coverage of both hard and soft commodities, including gold, crude oil, electricity, plastics, emissions and agriculturals.
Using structures unique to the individual market, each chapter includes an explanation of the commodity and an analysis of its physical market, discussion on the typical patterns of demand and supply and the main factors that will influence the price of the commodity, and the main products.
Each chapter focuses on how the products could be used along the physical supply chain and seeks to identify the main market risks and how they can be hedged. The book then brings into perspective how the structuring banks hedge their own resultant exposure and examines the attraction of OTC investment structures for the wholesale market.
Commodity Derivatives: Markets and Applications is essential reading for those wishing to learn about the main features of the commodity markets, the mechanics of derivatives, and how they are applied.
From the Inside Flap
"This is a timely book, written with great clarity, and full of valuable insights. It will be essential reading for experienced professionals and for newcomers to commodity derivatives alike."

'Weather Derivative Valuation draws on both finance and meteorology, with a healthy dose of mathematics and statistics, to provide the practitioner with a comprehensive guide to the various methods for pricing and hedging weather derivative contracts. While no perfect model may exist, Jewson and Brix give the reader the background necessary to make informed choices between competing techniques.' William Gebhardt, Merrill Lynch 'The weather derivatives market is exciting, dynamic and growing. This book is the most complete treatment I have seen of the many issues surrounding valuation of weather derivatives, starting from the basic principles, and then covering all the bases including meteorological data analysis, pricing, portfolio management, incorporation of forecasts and risk management. As a practitioner in the market, I found this book comprehensive and excellently written. Jewson and Brix have taken a complex subject and made it both interesting to read and easy to understand. I would have no hesitation in recommending it to others, both experts in the field and those approaching the subject for the first time.' Gear Lane, Centrica 'The book covers all of the latest topics in weather derivative pricing, valuation and risk management in a way that is rigorous, and yet also accessible to the non-mathematician. Highly recommended for all involved in weather derivatives, whether they are hedgers, traders, investors, marketers or risk managers.' Martin Jones, Chief Investmen Read more...

"Neoliberal economic policies and their imposition on developing countries by the IMF and the World Bank under the name of structural adjustment policies (SAPs) have long been targets of criticism by human rights advocates. Human Rights and Structural Adjustment not only brings together the rich theoretical arguments and empirical evidence but also provides comprehensive comparative analyses of the impact of SAPs on a variety of human rights. It speaks to all who are interested in human rights, democracy, development, poverty and political economy. As a corrective, it should be distributed to the executives of the two agencies and the US Treasury Department as a must reading."
Zehra F. Kabasakal Arat, Juanita and Jeff Leff Distinguished Professor, Purchase College, SUNY
"This book addresses a significant policy issue at a time when there is a growing consensus on the importance of human rights based approaches to development. The analysis shows that World Bank and IMF structural adjustment programmes have actually had adverse effects on a range of human rights practices in aid recipient states; effects which may well undermine the attempt to establish the social and political institutions necessary for good governance. Scholars and practitioners in the fields of development, democracy and human rights should take heed of the robust findings presented in this book and use its important lessons for the future."

Product Description
This book analyzes the political obstacles to the adoption of classic strategies of economic recovery and development, as well as the economic consequences of democratic political reforms. The case studies demonstrate that both “rentierism” and the “democracy deficit” result from a means-end problem rather than an ideological problem. The contributors focus on the role of the challenged rulers of shaky states where economic devastation has been the consequence of civil strife, often aided and abetted by external influences. But, if there can be no successful rebuilding of devastated economies, without some significant regime change, we seem to be asking these governments to put themselves out of business.

The 2nd edition of this sucessful book has several new features. The calibration discussion of the basic LIBOR market model has been enriched considerably, with an analysis of the impact of the swaptions interpolation technique and of the exogenous instantaneous correlation on the calibration outputs. A discussion of historical estimation of the instantaneous correlation matrix and of rank reduction has been added, and a LIBOR-model consistent swaption-volatility interpolation technique has been introduced.
The old sections devoted to the smile issue in the LIBOR market model have been enlarged into a new chapter. New sections on local-volatility dynamics, and on stochastic volatility models have been added, with a thorough treatment of the recently developed uncertain-volatility approach. Examples of calibrations to real market data are now considered.
The fast-growing interest for hybrid products has led to a new chapter. A special focus here is devoted to the pricing of convertible bonds and inflation-linked derivatives.
Since Credit Derivatives are increasingly fundamental, and since in the reduced-form modeling framework much of the technique involved is analogous to interest-rate modeling, Credit Derivatives -- mostly Credit Default Swaps (CDS) and CDS Options - are discussed, building on the basic short rate-models and market models introduced earlier for the default-free market. This groundbreaking book introduces the application of statistical methodologies to e-Commerce data
With the expanding presence of technology in today's economic market, the use of the Internet for buying, selling, and investing is growing more popular and public in nature. Statistical Methods in e-Commerce Research is the first book of its kind to focus on the statistical models and methods that are essential in order to analyze information from electronic-commerce (e-Commerce) transactions, identify the challenges that arise with new e-Commerce data structures, and discover new knowledge about consumer activity.
This collection gathers over thirty researchers and practitioners from the fields of statistics, computer science, information systems, and marketing to discuss the growing use of statistical methods in e-Commerce research. From privacy protection to economic impact, the book first identifies the many obstacles that are encountered while collecting, cleaning, exploring, and analyzing e-Commerce data. Solutions to these problems are then suggested using established and newly developed statistical and data mining methods. Finally, a look into the future of this evolving area of study is provided through an in-depth discussion of the emerging methods for conducting e-Commerce research.

Apart from standard actuarial theory, Modern Actuarial Risk Theory contains methods that are relevant for actuarial practice, for instance the rating of automobile insurance policies, premium principles and IBNR models, as well as generalized linear models with an eye on actuarial applications. Furthermore extensive introductions are given to credibility theory and ordering of risks. The book reflects the state of the art in actuarial risk theory. In addition to some chapters which are compatible with official material of actuarial education in North-America, Europe and other parts of the world, the book contains important material on topics that are relevant for recent insurance and actuarial developments including determining solvency measures, fair-value computations, reserving, ranking of risks, modelling dependencies and the use of generalized linear models. Basic ideas on risk measures in the framework of insurance premiums are also considered. The numerous exercises contained in Modern Actuarial Risk Theory, together with the hints for solving the more difficult ones and the numerical answers to many others, make the book useful as a textbook. Some important practical paradigms in insurance are presented in a way that is appealing to actuaries in their daily business. The mathematical background assumed is on a level such as acquired in the first stage of a bachelors program in quantitative economics or mathematical statistics. Read more...
