Software for complex problem solving can dazzle people with advanced features and alluring visuals, but when actually put to use it often disappoints and even frustrates users. This software rarely follows the user's own work methods, nor does it give people the degree of control and choice that they truly need. This book presents a groundbreaking approach to interaction design for complex problem solving applications. The author uses her vast field experience to present a new way of looking at the whole process, and treats complex problem solving software and web applications as a distinct class with its own set of usefulness demands and design criteria. This approach highlights integrated interactions rather than discrete actions, clearly defines what makes problem solving complex, and explores strategies for analyzing, modeling, and designing for exploratory inquiries. In depth case studies ranging from IT troubleshooting to marketing analysis to risk assessments in healthcare show exactly where and what goes wrong in real world activities and how to improve them. Presents a system and framework for analyzing complex work and takes the mystery out of eliciting patterns of work and their meanings. Offers new perspectives for support and new design strategies for building the right models into programs so that they effectively address users' dynamic work. Allows designers to turn findings into useful designs for problems that require users to create new knowledge but w Read more...

This volume, like so many in the Dummies series, does a good job of assuming that the reader is a raw beginner and meeting him/her at that level, leading them through the basic knowledge of the skill or topic in a laid-back, understandable way. This is especially helpful to those of us too old to have grown up with computers (I graduated high school in '84, just as the Apple 2E was coming out - what a machine! Dot Matrix term papers and endless games of "Pong")! Bravo to the authors and to the entire Dummies team. Highly recommended! Read more...

Integrated circuits are fundamental electronic components in biomedical, automotive and many other technical systems. A small, yet crucial part of a chip consists of analog circuitry. This part is still in large part designed by hand and therefore represents not only a bottleneck in the design flow, but also a permanent source of design errors responsible for re-designs, costly in terms of wasted test chips and in terms of lost time-to-market. Layout design is the step of the analog design flow with the least support by commercially available, computer-aided design tools. This book provides a survey of promising new approaches to automated, analog layout design, which have been described recently and are rapidly being adopted in industry. Read more...

I know close to nothing regarding digital photogrpahy and Photoshop in particular. I have been a film user for all my photographic life (since 1977), and I have always preferred the wet darkroom for black and white, and platinum/palladum printing. So when I decided to start learning Photoshop I bought several books, but they were all too advanced for me and they did not provide a foundation of knowledge and theory to help me understand how to begin. I came across Brad's book on Amazon and decided to purchase it because it seemed to be just what I needed. I was right. It is organized well and it is written in plain English. It flows logically from the Introduction to advanced techniques chapter. The book also gave me a good introduction to color management theory and practice -- something I never studied. I especially like the book's emphasis on developing a workflow in Chapter 3, and Brad is very generous in sharing his ideas and approach to a reliable image-editing workflow . The information in the chapter on workflow is provided in a clear step-by-step fashion. The Fourth chapter covers how to print images and it gives good information about color management and steps for printing a final image. The fifth chapter provides information about advanced techniques for blendiing layers, tonal adjustments, color correction, B and W image management, and filter effects. There are many photographs and images provided to illustrate the points emphasized in the book. This is a book you will Read more...

Applying AutoCAD 2010 has been updated to accompany the new version of the AutoCAD software, which includes some useful features for both 3D modeling and 2D documentation. Some of these features include: 3D Mesh Modeling --- A 3D mesh is a new type of object that can be reshaped by pushing or pulling on its surface. The object can be converted to a 3D solid. 2D Parametric Design --- Geometric constraints between 2D objects are now available, which means it is possible to force lines to be parallel or perpendicular to one another. Dimensional constraints allow control of a dimension based on a rule or a formula. In addition, the text reflects changes to the user interface, which has been redesigned to make some of the options more interactive and context-sensitive. The book retains its easy to follow step-by-step format. Read more...

Nowadays, intelligent techniques are more and more used in Computer Graphics in order to optimise the processing time, to find more accurate solutions for a lot of Computer Graphics problems, than with traditional methods, or simply to find solutions in problems where traditional methods fail. The purpose of this volume is to present current work of the Intelligent Computer Graphics community, a community growing up year after year. This volume is a kind of continuation of the previously published Springer volumes “Artificial Intelligence Techniques for Computer Graphics” (2008) and “Intelligent Computer Graphics 2009” (2009). This volume contains selected extended papers from the last 3IA Conference (3IA’2010), which has been held in Athens (Greece) in May 2010. This year papers are particularly exciting and concern areas like rendering, viewpoint quality, data visualisation, vision, computational aesthetics, scene understanding, intelligent lighting, declarative modelling, GIS, scene reconstruction and other important themes. "Instant Notes in Inorganic Chemistry" provides a concise yet comprehensive introduction to inorganic chemistry, providing easy access to the core information in the field. Inorganic chemistry can claim to be a peculiarly broad subject, dealing with the descriptive chemistry of all the elements, together with some general principles which provide a framework and enable the detailed facts to be seen in context. The early parts of the book cover background materials including atomic structure, bonding in molecules and solids, and general principles of reactivity. The later parts cover the descriptive chemistry of different areas of the periodic table. Part of the interest in inorganic chemistry lies in its relevance in the world outside the laboratory, including environmental, biological and industrial areas, so the book includes brief mentions of these aspects under individual elements, and also as separate topics in the final section. The text assumes a background roughly equivalent that of a university general chemistry course. The author has made the account as accessible as possible by keeping mathematics to a minimum. It also features multiple choice questions and answers to test understanding. If you are studying inorganic chemistry and need an easy to understand text "Instant Notes in Inorganic Chemistry" is the lifeline you need to help you understand the subject. Read more...
