Digital Control of Electrical Drives offers insight into electric drives and their usage in motion control environment. It provides links among electrical machine and control theory, practical hardware aspects, programming issues, and application-specific problems. The book prepares the reader to understand the key elements of motion control systems, analyze and design discrete-time speed and position controllers, set adjustable feedback parameters, and evaluate closed-loop performances. Basic engineering principles are used to derive the controller structure in an intuitive manner, so that designs are easy to comprehend, modify, and extend. Digital Control of Electrical Drives helps the reader acquire practical skills in designing discrete-time speed and position controllers. Each chapter is followed by a set of MatlabR and SimulinkR tools which help readers master the phases of design, tuning, simulation, and evaluation of discrete time controllers, and foresee the effects of control solution on the overall motion control system. Readers will also understand the present performance limits of digital motion controllers. Contents Preface 1 Speed Control 1.1 Basic structure of the speed-controlled system Problems 2 Basic Structure of the Speed Controller 2.1 Proportional control action 2.1.1 Open-loop and closed-loop transfer functions 2.1.2 Load rejection of the proportional speed controller 2.1.3 Proportional speed controller with variable reference 2. From the Back Cover Digital control systems are becoming increasingly prevalent and important within industry. In recent years significant progress has been made in their analysis and design - particularly within the areas of microprocessors and digital signal processors. The traditional approach to teaching digital control assumes an understanding of analog control theory; Digital Control, however, teaches the fundamentals of the topics, assuming no prior knowledge of control engineering. Organised into five sections, it discusses modelling, signal processing and identification of plants from measurements, as well as the transfer function approach to, and state space techniques for, control design. * Teaches the fundamentals of digital control, enabling the student to exploit the complete potential of digital systems. * Presents a number of control techniques including proportional-integral-derivative (PID), pole placement, internal model, minimum variance, model predictive and linear quadratic Gaussian control and their extensions. * Provides an extensive introduction to digital signal processing, an essential component to the understanding and implementation of digital controllers; and to the identification of plant models, an important topic in this information era. * Includes examples, problems and solutions as well as accompanying MatLAB code. Digital Control offers an advanced and self-contained textbook to senior undergraduates and postgraduates in chemical Read more...

Relativistic cosmology has in recent years become one of the most active and exciting branches of research, often considered to be today where particle physics was forty years ago, with major discoveries just waiting to happen. Consequently the part most affected by this second edition is the last part on cosmology. But there are additions, improvements, and new exercises throughout. _ The book's basic purpose is unchanged. It is to make relativity come alive conceptually, and to display the grand theoretical edifice that it is, with consequences in many branches of physics. The emphasis is on the foundations, on the logical subtleties, and on presenting the necessary mathematics - including differential geometry and tensors - but always as late and in as palatable a form as possible. Aided by over 300 exercises, the book seeks to promote an in-depth understanding, and the confidence to tackle any basic problem in relativity. An introductory guide to global magnetic field properties, Earth Magnetism addresses, in non-technical prose, many of the frequently asked questions about Earth's magnetic field. Magnetism surrounds and penetrates our Earth in ways basic science courses can rarely address. It affects navigation, communication, and even the growth of crystals. As we observe and experience an 11-year solar maximum, we may witness spectacular satellite-destroying solar storms as they interact with our magnetic field. Written by an acknowledged expert in the field, this book will enrich courses in earth science, atmospheric science, geology, meteorology, geomagnetism, and geophysics. Contains nearly 200 original illustrations and eight pages of full-color plates. * Largely mathematics-free and with a wide breadth of material suitable for general readers * Integrates material from geomagnetism, paleomagnetism, and solar-terrestrial space physics. * Features nearly 200 original illustrations and 4 pages of colour plates From the Reviews "This layman's non-technical description of the Earth's magnetic field is long overdue. Dr. Campbell has done an excellent job of not only describing the scientific nature of this area of science, but also puts the understanding at the level of the majority of the public." --Joe Hirman, Chief Forecaster, Space Environment Forecast Center, NOAA "This book is written by a world-renowned scientist and provides a wealth of scientific information about magn Read more...

Review By Hanno Essen (Stockholm Sweden) This material of this book was successfully used in a course of special relativity for advanced undergraduates at the University of Stockholm by the late professor Bertel Laurent, one of Oskar Klein's best students. When he sadly passed away shortly before retirement the manuscript was transformed into a book by his enthusiastic friend Stig Flodmark. The book is unusual in that it does not discuss the historical, philosophical, and experimental background that most book dwell on a lot. Instead special relativity is clearly and simply presented with modern coordinate free (index free) notation as a correct and accepted theory of physics. I recommend it strongly as a concise, pedagogical, and compact course book with a modern point of view. Contents I PRINCIPLES. While most amateur astronomers know about the red shift, have a general idea of the way that the emission and absorption lines in stellar spectra provide an insight into the atomic processes of the star, it is unusual to find someone who has any kind of detailed knowledge. The reason isnt lack on interest far from it but is because all the books currently available are pitched at professional astronomers and degree students, and are to say the least, difficult to read. This is the first non-technical book on this subject, written specifically for practical amateur astronomers. It includes all the science necessary for a qualitative understanding of stellar spectra, but avoids a mathematical treatment which would alienate many of its intended readers. Any amateur astronomer who carries out (or who is interested in) observational spectroscopy and who wants a non-technical account of the physical processes which determine the intensity and profile morphology of lines in stellar spectra will find this is the only book written specially for him. And of course, "armchair astronomers" who simply want to understand the physical processes which shape lines in stellar spectra will find this book equally fascinating. From the reviews: "If you ever wondered what the big deal is about spectroscopy or wished you understood it a little better, this books for you. Robinson takes a step-by-step approach to spectroscopy, each chapter building on the ones before it. The book is a wo Read more...
