Note: This seems to be a draft version, because pdf-file has 490 pages, but book has 761 pages.
Progressive in content and form, this practical text successfully bridges the gap between the circuit perspective and system perspective of digital integrated circuit design. Beginning with solid discussions on the operation of electronic devices and and in-depth analysis of the nucleus of digital design, the text maintains a consistent, logical flow of subject matter throughout, addressing today's most significant and compelling industry topics: the impact of interconnect, design for low power, issues in timing and clocking, design methodologies, and the tremendous effect of design automation on the digital design perspective.

Since the publication of the first edition of this book in 1996, CMOS manufacturing technology has continued its breathtaking pace, scaling to ever-smaller dimensions. Minimum feature sizes are now reaching the 100-rim realm. Circuits are becoming more complex, challenging the productivity of the designer, while the plunge into the deep-submicron space causes devices to behave differently and brings to the forefront a number of new issues that impact the reliability, cost, performance, power dissipation, and reliability of the digital IC. This updated text reflects the ongoing (r)evolution in the world of digital integrated circuit design, caused by this move into the deep-submicron realm. This means increased importance of deep- Read more...

Ted Van Sickle spent over fifteen years at Motorola as a microcontroller specialist. He now consults and teaches classes on software design and programming for microcontroller systems. He holds a MSEE from the University of Michigan.
Introduces microcontrollers and describes their programming environment, offering tips on coding for microcontrollers
Describes techniques to get maximum performance from your code
Discusses the differences between 8-bit and larger microcontrollers, giving application examples and providing details on using different compilers
Review
"The book covers the essentials of C, programming actual microcontrollers, and discusses real world examples as well as theoretical models."
--Embedded Systems Programming Product News
"A must-read for engineers trying to get a handle on software issues . . . I get a constant stream of queries for introductory texts to the embedded-systems world. This is the book. It should be required reading even in computer curriculum, where embedded systems get virtually no mention."
--EDN
Summary: Title Should Be: Programming Motorola Microcontrollers
Rating: 2
This book is written by a retired Motorola guy and it shows. Van Sickle all but ignores other processors and all of his examples are based on Motorola controllers and C compilers. He's also a bit out of date in many areas.
Much of the book is centered around older (non-flash) Motorola parts. He mentions some of the newer ones here and there, but Read more...

The authors use their decades of experience and draw upon real-world examples to demonstrate that the application of their techniques provides a basis for equipment management, uptime maximization, and reduced maintenance costs. The text explores reliability assessment techniques such as Failure Mode, Effect Analysis, and Fault Tree Analysis of commonly encountered rotating machinery. These are all highly effective techniques that the engineer can apply to maximize uptime and thereby maximize production and profitability.
* Provides the tools to drastically improve machinery productivity and performance
* Bridges the gap between the theory of "reliability engineering" and the practical day-to-day measures that lead to machinery uptime
* Authoritative reference for maximizing the uptime of process equipment

Digital Control of Electrical Drives offers insight into electric drives and their usage in motion control environment. It provides links among electrical machine and control theory, practical hardware aspects, programming issues, and application-specific problems. The book prepares the reader to understand the key elements of motion control systems, analyze and design discrete-time speed and position controllers, set adjustable feedback parameters, and evaluate closed-loop performances. Basic engineering principles are used to derive the controller structure in an intuitive manner, so that designs are easy to comprehend, modify, and extend.
Digital Control of Electrical Drives helps the reader acquire practical skills in designing discrete-time speed and position controllers. Each chapter is followed by a set of MatlabR and SimulinkR tools which help readers master the phases of design, tuning, simulation, and evaluation of discrete time controllers, and foresee the effects of control solution on the overall motion control system. Readers will also understand the present performance limits of digital motion controllers.

From the Back Cover
Digital control systems are becoming increasingly prevalent and important within industry. In recent years significant progress has been made in their analysis and design - particularly within the areas of microprocessors and digital signal processors. The traditional approach to teaching digital control assumes an understanding of analog control theory; Digital Control, however, teaches the fundamentals of the topics, assuming no prior knowledge of control engineering. Organised into five sections, it discusses modelling, signal processing and identification of plants from measurements, as well as the transfer function approach to, and state space techniques for, control design.
* Teaches the fundamentals of digital control, enabling the student to exploit the complete potential of digital systems.
* Presents a number of control techniques including proportional-integral-derivative (PID), pole placement, internal model, minimum variance, model predictive and linear quadratic Gaussian control and their extensions.
* Provides an extensive introduction to digital signal processing, an essential component to the understanding and implementation of digital controllers; and to the identification of plant models, an important topic in this information era.
* Includes examples, problems and solutions as well as accompanying MatLAB code.
Digital Control offers an advanced and self-contained textbook to senior undergraduates and postgraduates in chemical Read more...

To the student
English Grammar in Use Supplementary Exercises is for intermediate and advanced students who want extra practice in grammar, without help from a teacher.
There arc 200 exercises in this new edition. Each exercise relates to a unit or units in English Grammar in Use new edition 2004, with the unit number(s) at the top of the page. All the answers arc given in the Key (pages 121-136). Some exercises ask you to use your own ideas. For these, you can check the Example answers in the Key. You can use this book if you don't have English Grammar in Use, but for an explanation of the grammar points, you need to check in English Grammar in Use.
The grammar points covered in the book are not in order of difficulty, so you can go straight to the parts where you need the most practice. Where there arc several exercises on one grammar point, however, the easier ones come first. It's a good idea to do each exercise, check your answers and then go on to the next one.
Many of the exercises are in the form of emails, letters, conversations or short articles. You can use these as models for writing or speaking practice.
To the teacher
English Grammar in Use Supplementary Exercises offers extra practice of most of the grammar points covered in English Grammar in Use new edition 2004. Much of the language is contextualised within dialogues, emails, letters, articles etc., encouraging students to consider meaning as well as form. The book can be used as self-study Read more...
