With a highly applied and computational focus, this book combines the important underlying theory with examples from electrical engineering, computer science, physics, biology and economics. An expanded list of computer codes in an appendix and more computer-solvable exercises in the text reflect Strang?s interest in computational linear algebra. Many exercises appear in the sections and in the chapter reviews. Exercises are simple but instructive.
About the Author
Gilbert Strang is Professor of Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an Honorary Fellow of Balliol College. He was an undergraduate at MIT and a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. His doctorate was from UCLA and since then he has taught at MIT. He has been a Sloan Fellow and a Fairchild Scholar and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Professor Strang has published a monograph with George Fix, "An Analysis of the Finite Element Method", and has authored six widely used textbooks. He served as President of SIAM during 1999 and 2000 and he is Chair of the U.S. National Committee on Mathematics for 2003-2004. Read more...

Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach introduces basic ideas in artificial intelligence from the perspective of building intelligent agents, which the authors define as "anything that can be viewed as perceiving its environment through sensors and acting upon the environment through effectors." This textbook is up-to-date and is organized using the latest principles of good textbook design. It includes historical notes at the end of every chapter, exercises, margin notes, a bibliography, and a competent index. Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach covers a wide array of material, including first-order logic, game playing, knowledge representation, planning, and reinforcement learning.

The most comprehensive book on AI, Jan 31 2004
By D Ray (Toronto)
Artificial Intelligence: A modern approach is definitely the most comprehensive book on AI I have come across. The latest edition covers everything from KR and Machine Learning to Robotics and Statistical learning, and has new chapters on Constraint Satisfaction Problems and Planning.
Artificial Intelligence has diverse branches and it's hard to see the correlations between them. This book manages to take a very innovative "agent" approach and tries to show some parallels between very disparate methods.
In my opinion, each branch of AI has made great progress by itself but more work needs to be done in trying to combine the different approaches together and create more comprehensive systems. The book does Read more...

Great handy pocket guide, Jan 24 2003
We had one - but lost it - and went out and bought the same again. Need I say more? Small (maybe too small for some users), nice simple layout, every kind of conversion we need. Includes several odd measurements as well as UK/US standards + metrics.

One of the most widely used teaching theory books. Recommended for all TEFL/TESL teachers.
This third edition has been completely rewritten and updated to combine the best of traditional approaches with the latest developments in language teaching theory and methodology.
The Third Edition of this "classic" text incorporates a broader and more detailed analysis of issues relevant to language teachers. "The Practice of English Language Teaching" is full of practical suggestions and samples from actual teaching materials.
*Includes new examples from published coursebooks and reference materials
*'Follow-up Tasks' to practise the ideas presented in each chapter
*Suggestions for further reading, and a detailed bibliography
Theoretical insights into teaching English as a second language developed in recent years are brought together in a broad methodological approach called the balanced activities approach. The book aims at providing a theoretical background to the approach as well as detailing practical instructional techniques. The first of the three parts of the book, on theory, outlines the concerns of applied linguistics that have influenced English teaching, including (1) language learning motivation and success factors; (2) the knowledge and skills of a native speaker; (3) the content and varieties of language instruction; and (4) the connections between language learning and language teaching. The second part, on practice, focuses on specific techniques and ma Read more...

Compressed Image File Formats is an appealingly compact and useful guide to some of today's most popular file formats used for image data. For any programmer who needs to know how images are stored, this concise reference can serve as a really invaluable resource.
Besides full coverage of the popular BMP, GIF, and PNG file formats, the book zeroes in on the JPEG standard, perhaps today's most popular (and most complicated) image format. In a series of short chapters, the book looks at JPEG in detail, from basic file organization (its format and marker fields), file compression techniques (like Huffman coding and DCT), and how to decode (read) and encode (write) JPEG images. By condensing hundreds of pages of specifications and documentation from the voluminous JPEG standard into this short volume, the author has created a worthwhile summary of key JPEG features and compression techniques useful to any graphics programmer.
The book also includes C++ code for a simple JPEG encoder (on the accompanying CD-ROM). This example can get you started compressing images using the JPEG format. In addition, the book discusses techniques for creating and decoding progressive JPEGs (used for downloading images in stages, in progressively finer resolutions, over the Internet).
Whether you are a programmer faced with decoding or encoding image data, or an interested Webmaster who wants to know the pros and cons of today's image file formats, Compressed Image File Formats Read more...

The Princeton Review doesn't try to teach students everything there is to know about biology -- only what they'll need to know to score higher on the GRE Biology. There's a big difference.
In Cracking the GRE Biology, TPR will teach test-takers how to think like the test-makers. This is accomplished by teaching students how to: Know what types of questions to expect Improve scores by studying the topics most likely to appear on the test Sharpen skills in TPR's biology lab Get ahead with Word Watch, TPR's list of terms that frequently appear on the test
*This book includes a full-length simulated GRE Biology test. All of The Princeton Review's sample test questions are like the ones test-takers will see on the actual GRE Biology test, and every solution is fully explained. Contents Include:
- Part I: Introduction
- Part II: Cell and Molecular Biology Remember Organic Chemistry? The Eukaryotic Cell Cellular Energetics DNA, RNA, Transcription, and Translation Cell Division: Mitosis and Meiosis Fertilization and Development Microorganisms: Bacteria, Fungi, and Viruses
- Part III: Human Physiology The Circulatory System The Digestive System The Excretory System The Endocrine System The Musculoskeletal System The Nervous System The Respiratory System

Note: This seems to be a draft version, because pdf-file has 490 pages, but book has 761 pages.
Progressive in content and form, this practical text successfully bridges the gap between the circuit perspective and system perspective of digital integrated circuit design. Beginning with solid discussions on the operation of electronic devices and and in-depth analysis of the nucleus of digital design, the text maintains a consistent, logical flow of subject matter throughout, addressing today's most significant and compelling industry topics: the impact of interconnect, design for low power, issues in timing and clocking, design methodologies, and the tremendous effect of design automation on the digital design perspective.
From the Back Cover
Since the publication of the first edition of this book in 1996, CMOS manufacturing technology has continued its breathtaking pace, scaling to ever-smaller dimensions. Minimum feature sizes are now reaching the 100-rim realm. Circuits are becoming more complex, challenging the productivity of the designer, while the plunge into the deep-submicron space causes devices to behave differently and brings to the forefront a number of new issues that impact the reliability, cost, performance, power dissipation, and reliability of the digital IC. This updated text reflects the ongoing (r)evolution in the world of digital integrated circuit design, caused by this move into the deep-submicron realm. This means increased importance of deep- Read more...
