This third volume of the best-selling GPU Gems series provides a snapshot of today's latest Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) programming techniques. The programmability of modern GPUs allows developers to not only distinguish themselves from one another but also to use this awesome processing power for non-graphics applications, such as physics simulation, financial analysis, and even virus detection-particularly with the CUDA architecture. Graphics remains the leading application for GPUs, and readers will find that the latest algorithms create ultra-realistic characters, better lighting, and post-rendering compositing effects.
Major topics include
* Geometry
* Light and Shadows
* Rendering
* Image Effects
* Physics Simulation
* GPU Computing
"The GPU Gems series features a collection of the most essential algorithms required by Next-Generation 3D Engines."

The "Handbook of Physics" is a complete desktop reference for scientists, engineers, and students. A veritable toolbox for everyday use in problem solving, homework, examinations, and practical applications of physics, it provides quick and easy access to a wealth of information including not only the fundamental formulas of physics but also a wide variety of experimental methods used in practice. Compiled by professional scientists, engineers, and lecturers who are experts in the day-to-day use of physics, the "Handbook" covers topics from classical mechanics to elementary particles, electric circuits to error analysis. The previous editions in German are renowned for their clarity and completeness. Each chapter contains: - all the important concepts, formulas, rules and theorems - numerous examples and practical applications - suggestions for problem solving, hints, and cross references - measurement techniques and important sources of errors - numerous tables of standard values and material properties Access to information is direct and swift through the user-friendly layout, structured table of contents, and extensive index. Like the companion "Handbook of Mathematics and Computational Science" compiled by Harris and Stocker, the "Handbook of Physics" is an invaluable tool for college and graduate students and researchers and practitioners in all fields of engineering and natural science.

Digital Design and Computer Architecture is designed for courses that combine digital logic design with computer organization/architecture or that teach these subjects as a two-course sequence. Digital Design and Computer Architecture begins with a modern approach by rigorously covering the fundamentals of digital logic design and then introducing Hardware Description Languages (HDLs). Featuring examples of the two most widely-used HDLs, VHDL and Verilog, the first half of the text prepares the reader for what follows in the second: the design of a MIPS Processor. By the end of Digital Design and Computer Architecture, readers will be able to build their own microprocessor and will have a top-to-bottom understanding of how it works--even if they have no formal background in design or architecture beyond an introductory class. David Harris and Sarah Harris combine an engaging and humorous writing style with an updated and hands-on approach to digital design.
* Unique presentation of digital logic design from the perspective of computer architecture using a real instruction set, MIPS.
* Side-by-side examples of the two most prominent Hardware Design Languages--VHDL and Verilog--illustrate and compare the ways the each can be used in the design of digital systems.
* Worked examples conclude each section to enhance the reader's understanding and retention of the material.
* Companion Web site includes links to CAD tools for FPGA design from Synplicity and Xilinx,

This book provides users and manufacturers of PID controllers, as well as educators, with a better understanding of PID control. This second edition takes stock of new developments in digital PID controllers. Modeling methods, implementation details, and problem-solving techniques are presented to help you improve loop performance and product quality.
The book examines the auto-tuning and adaptation features of several commercial controllers and it discusses measures for dealing with specific challenges such as reset windup, long process dead times, and oscillatory systems. Design methods and tuning rules that consider factors such as load disturbances, measurement noise, model uncertainty, and set point response are also recommended. Read more...

With a highly applied and computational focus, this book combines the important underlying theory with examples from electrical engineering, computer science, physics, biology and economics. An expanded list of computer codes in an appendix and more computer-solvable exercises in the text reflect Strang?s interest in computational linear algebra. Many exercises appear in the sections and in the chapter reviews. Exercises are simple but instructive.

The most comprehensive book on AI, Jan 31 2004
By D Ray (Toronto)
Artificial Intelligence: A modern approach is definitely the most comprehensive book on AI I have come across. The latest edition covers everything from KR and Machine Learning to Robotics and Statistical learning, and has new chapters on Constraint Satisfaction Problems and Planning.
Artificial Intelligence has diverse branches and it's hard to see the correlations between them. This book manages to take a very innovative "agent" approach and tries to show some parallels between very disparate methods.
In my opinion, each branch of AI has made great progress by itself but more work needs to be done in trying to combine the different approaches together and create more comprehensive systems. The book does Read more...

Compressed Image File Formats is an appealingly compact and useful guide to some of today's most popular file formats used for image data. For any programmer who needs to know how images are stored, this concise reference can serve as a really invaluable resource.
Besides full coverage of the popular BMP, GIF, and PNG file formats, the book zeroes in on the JPEG standard, perhaps today's most popular (and most complicated) image format. In a series of short chapters, the book looks at JPEG in detail, from basic file organization (its format and marker fields), file compression techniques (like Huffman coding and DCT), and how to decode (read) and encode (write) JPEG images. By condensing hundreds of pages of specifications and documentation from the voluminous JPEG standard into this short volume, the author has created a worthwhile summary of key JPEG features and compression techniques useful to any graphics programmer.
The book also includes C++ code for a simple JPEG encoder (on the accompanying CD-ROM). This example can get you started compressing images using the JPEG format. In addition, the book discusses techniques for creating and decoding progressive JPEGs (used for downloading images in stages, in progressively finer resolutions, over the Internet).
Whether you are a programmer faced with decoding or encoding image data, or an interested Webmaster who wants to know the pros and cons of today's image file formats, Compressed Image File Formats Read more...
