Jewish Thought: An Introduction

An Introduction

Tina Beattie, Peter Beyer, Oliver Leaman “Jewish Thought: An Introduction"
Routledge | 2006-10 | ISBN: 0203087186 | 201 pages | PDF | 1,1 MB

This is a fresh and contemporary introduction to the Jewish faith, its philosophies and worldviews. Written by a leading figure in the field, it explores debates which have preoccupied Jewish thinkers over the centuries and examines their continuing influence in contemporary Judaism.
Jewish Thought surveys the central controversies in Judaism, including the protracted arguments within the religion itself. Topics range from the relations between Judaism and other religions, such as Islam and Christianity, to contemporary issues such as sex and gender and modernity. Central themes such as authority and obedience, the relations between Jewish and Greek thought, and the position and status of the State of Israel are also considered. The debates are further illuminated by reference to the Bible, as a profoundly realistic text in describing the long interaction between the Jews, their ancestors and God, as well as discussions about major thinkers, and passages from the ancient texts: the Mishnah, Talmud and Midrash.

Drop Dead Gorgeous - Linda Howard

Drop Dead Gorgeous - Linda Howard

Although someone is trying to kill fitness salon owner and former cheerleader Blair Mallory yet again, she retains her winning comedic voice in Howard's follow up to 2005's To Die For. Southern belle Blair remains perfectly matched with police Lieutenant Wyatt Bloodsworth, who has given her one month to execute their wedding, or else he's taking them to Vegas. Things take a turn when a crazed driver nearly runs Blair down in the mall parking lot; it's not long before Blair starts receiving strange phone calls and spots a car tailing her, but the normally astute Wyatt doesn't put two and two together. Though the danger is real-and escalates violently-this is no heart-thumping suspense novel, but instead an old-fashioned clash of the sexes: Blair's high-maintenance style versus Wyatt's alpha male tendencies. Funny and sexy throughout, Howard's latest is marred only by Wyatt's shoddy policework, a convenient misstep that propels the plot but rings false. Regardless, fans of this couple will delight in their rematch, and Howard's recently revealed comedic talents are sure to secure her new readers.

Choice can be daunting or desirable, marvellous or muddling. What helps a confusing plethora of options to become a wealth of exciting opportunities is clear information upon which to base your choices. At present the job market is relatively buoyant and there are plenty of pathways from which to choose. Education and training and training options are perhaps the most extensive they have ever been. All this is, of course, good news, but it does mean that anyone entering the employment market at whatever level must undertake considerable research. It is also true that having plenty to choose from does not mean that every choice is easy. Much of the job market, for example work in the media, is fiercely competitive.

Hope: How Triumphant Leaders Create the Future

How Triumphant Leaders Create the Future

Hardcover: 272 pages
Publisher: Jossey-Bass (June 12, 2006)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0787981265
ISBN-13: 978-0787981266

From Publishers Weekly
Leaders personify hope," Razeghi claims, not by trusting in luck but by demonstrating their preparedness to seize opportunities for success even when faced with setbacks. His exploration of the power of positive thinking strives for universality, touching base with spiritual leaders like Deepak Chopra and businessmen like Charles Schwab, as well as drawing upon some of his own personal experiences as a management consultant and, at one point, an attempt at inspirational poetry. Razeghi has a friendly, engaging manner, and some of his stories, such as one about the experiences of an astronaut who remained calm enough to put out a fire on a space station, can be inspiring. However, his mixture of psychology, cognitive science and self-help advice turns out to be a superficial rehash of well-worn advice. The methods of "belief management" he discusses, such as creating personal mantras and motivational narratives, are old hat. Buzzwords abound: improvising through uncertainty becomes "wayfinding," for example, while the contemplation of one's own mortality is reduced to "flatlining." Anyone who has already given serious consideration to personal and professional motivation is sure to find most of this material too familiar to be truly revealing. (July)
