John R. Vacca “Practical Internet Security”

Publisher: Springer | Number Of Pages: 536 | 1.45 MB | PDF | 2006-10-18 | ISBN: 038740533X

As organizations today are linking their systems across enterprise-wide networks and VPNs as well as increasing their exposure to customers, competitors, browsers and hackers on the Internet, it becomes increasingly imperative for Web professionals to be trained in techniques for effectively protecting their sites from internal and external threats. Each connection magnifies the vulnerability to attack. With the increased connectivity to the Internet and the wide availability of automated cracking tools, organizations can no longer simply rely on operating system security to protect their valuable corporate data. Furthermore, the exploding use of Web technologies for corporate intranets and Internet sites has escalated security risks to corporate data and information systems.

Wai M Tam, Francis C. M. Lau, Chi K Tse ” Digital Communications with Chaos: Multiple Access Techniques and Performance “

Publisher: Elsevier Science | Number Of Pages: 256 | 7.32 MB | PDF | 2006-12-13 | ISBN: 0080451519

Since the 1970’s, there has been a great deal of research effort spent on studying chaotic systems and the properties of the chaotic signals generated. Characterized by their wideband, impulse-like autocorrelation and low cross-correlation properties, chaotic signals are useful spread-spectrum signals for carrying digital information. Spectrum spreading has become one of the most popular modulation techniques for high-speed wireless communications. It makes use of signals of very wide bandwidth to carry information at relatively low data rates, and possesses advantages such as low probability of interception, resistance to jamming, multiple-access capability and mitigation to multipath effect, which are particularly important in a wireless scenario. In addition to enjoying the aforementioned benefits, chaotic signals can be generated using simple circuitries, thus lowering the cost of transceivers.

by Kweku Ewusi-Mensah ” Software Development Failures “

Publisher: The MIT Press | Number Of Pages: 290 | 2003-09-14 | 1.6 MB | PDF | ISBN: 0262050722

Failed or abandoned software development projects cost the U.S. economy alone billions of dollars a year. In Software Development Failures, Kweku Ewusi-Mensah offers an empirically grounded study that suggests why these failures happen and how they can be avoided. Case studies analyzed include the well-known Confirm travel industry reservation program, FoxMeyer’s Delta, the IRS’s Tax System Modernization, the Denver International Airport’s Baggage Handling System, and CODIS. It has been estimated that one-third of software development projects fail or are abandoned outright because of cost overruns, delays, and reduced functionality. Some consider this an acceptable risk — that it is simply the cost of doing business. Ewusi-Mensah argues that understanding the factors involved in development failures will help developers and businesses bring down the rate of software failure and abandoned projects.

F.M. Dekking , C. Kraaikamp, H.P. Lopuhaä, L.E. Meester “A Modern Introduction to Probability and Statistics: Understanding Why and How”

Springer; 1st ed. 2005. Corr. 2nd printing edition (February 1, 2007) | ISBN: 1852338962 | 488 pages | PDF | 3,9 Mb

Probability and Statistics are studied by most science students, usually as a second- or third-year course. Many current texts in the area are just cookbooks and, as a result, students do not know why they perform the methods they are taught, or why the methods work. The strength of this book is that it readdresses these shortcomings; by using examples, often from real-life and using real data, the authors can show how the fundamentals of probabilistic and statistical theories arise intuitively. It provides a tried and tested, self-contained course, that can also be used for self-study.

Jan Blommaert “Discourse: A Critical Introduction”

Cambridge University Press (March 28, 2005) | ISBN: 0521828171 | 314 pages | PDF | 1,5 Mb

Review
“The major contribution of this book is its emphasis on global contexts and their importance for discourse analysis. The author shows in a convincing way that consideration must be given to inequality at a much wider level than only in isolated texts if patterns of inequality are to be fully uncovered and exposed. The particular instances of discourse analysis presented in the book are also exceptionally thorough and well argued. I have no doubt that ‘Discourse: A Critical Introduction’ will have an excessive impact on the study of discourse, communication and power relations in the future.” - Johanna Barodal, University of Bergan, Norway
