Marcia L, “Menopause For Dummies”
Publisher: For Dummies | 2006-12-06 | 0470053437 | 384 p | PDF | 4.6 Mb
Although menopause is a natural and inevitable stage in every woman’s life, its physical, mental, and emotional manifestations can vary greatly from one person to the next. Add to this all of the conflicting “expert” information about the benefits, risks, and side effects to which women are exposed on a daily basis, and it’s easy to see why most find it difficult to make informed choices about how to deal with their menopausal symptoms.

Jacques Mohcine Bahi, Sylvain Contassot-Vivier, Raphael Couturier “Parallel Iterative Algorithms: From Sequential to Grid Computing”
Chapman & Hall/CRC | 2007-11-28 | ISBN: 1584888083 | 240 pages | PDF | 1,8 Mb
Focusing on grid computing and asynchronism, Parallel Iterative Algorithms explores the theoretical and practical aspects of parallel numerical algorithms. Each chapter contains a theoretical discussion of the topic, an algorithmic section that fully details implementation examples and specific algorithms, and an evaluation of the advantages and drawbacks of the algorithms. Several exercises also appear at the end of most chapters. The first two chapters introduce the general features of sequential iterative algorithms and their applications to numerical problems. The book then describes different kinds of parallel systems and parallel iterative algorithms. It goes on to address both linear and nonlinear parallel synchronous and asynchronous iterative algorithms for numerical computation, with an emphasis on the multisplitting approach. The final chapter discusses the features required for efficient implementation of asynchronous iterative algorithms. Providing the theoretical and practical knowledge needed to design and implement efficient parallel iterative algorithms, this book illustrates how to apply these algorithms to solve linear and nonlinear numerical problems in parallel environments, including local, distant, homogeneous, and heterogeneous clusters.

Analytic Culture in the US Intelligence Community: An Ethnographic Study
CSI, Central Intelligence Agency | 2005 | ISBN: 1929667132 | English | 173 pages | PDF | 1.5 MB
It is a rare season when the intelligence story in the news concerns intelligence analysis, not secret operations abroad. The United States is having such a season as it debates whether intelligence failed in the run-up to both September 11 and the second Iraq war, and so Rob Johnston’s wonderful book is perfectly timed to provide the back-story to those headlines. The CIA’s Center for the Study of Intelligence is to be commended for having the good sense to find Johnston and the courage to support his work, even though his conclusions are not what many in the world of intelligence analysis would like to hear.

Christiaan Heij, Paul de Boer, Philip Hans Franses, Teun Kloek, Herman K. van Dijk “Econometric Methods with Applications in Business and Economics”
Oxford University Press, USA | 2004-05-12 | ISBN: 0199268010 | 816 pages | PDF | 10 Mb
Nowadays applied work in business and economics requires a solid understanding of econometric methods to support decision-making. Combining a solid exposition of econometric methods with an application-oriented approach, this rigorous textbook provides students with a working understanding and hands-on experience of current econometrics. Taking a ‘learning by doing’ approach, it covers basic econometric methods (statistics, simple and multiple regression, nonlinear regression, maximum likelihood, and generalized method of moments), and addresses the creative process of model building with due attention to diagnostic testing and model improvement. Its last part is devoted to two major application areas: the econometrics of choice data (logit and probit, multinomial and ordered choice, truncated and censored data, and duration data) and the econometrics of time series data (univariate time series, trends, volatility, vector autoregressions, and a brief discussion of SUR models, panel data, and simultaneous equations). DT Real-world text examples and practical exercise questions stimulate active learning and show how econometrics can solve practical questions in modern business and economic management. DT Focuses on the core of econometrics, regression, and covers two major advanced topics, choice data with applications in marketing and micro-economics, and time series data with applications in finance and macro-economics. DT Learning-support features include concise, manageable sections of text, frequent cross-references to related and background material, summaries, computational schemes, keyword lists, suggested further reading, exercise sets, and online data sets and solutions. DT Derivations and theory exercises are clearly marked for students in advanced courses. This textbook is perfect for advanced undergraduate students, new graduate students, and applied researchers in econometrics, business, and economics, and for researchers in other fields that draw on modern applied econometrics.

Jan M. Smits “Elgar Encyclopedia of Comparative Law”
Edward Elgar Publishing | 2006-07-30 | ISBN: 1845420136 | 821 pages | PDF | 2,7 Mb
`The Elgar Encyclopedia of Comparative Law looks set to become an indispensable source for the ever increasing body of lawyers needing accurate information on the structure and working of foreign systems as well as on points of a substantive law. Edited by Professor Jan Smits of Maastricht University the Encyclopedia is the work of an extremely strong international team of noted specialists. Comprising articles on the nature, methodology and focus of comparative law, on the legal systems of particular jurisdictions and on matters of substantive law, the work should be a very significant contribution to the literature. It seems likely that the contributions on the “comparative state of affairs” in particular fields of substantive law will be an especially valuable aspect of the work. There will be 37 such articles from “accident compensation” to “unjustified enrichment” with “mistake”, “personality rights”, “product liability” and “transfer of moveable property” only a sample of what the work will offer. Casting over this list one is again struck by the wealth of established expertise brought together in the Encyclopedia. I have little doubt that I can speak for the worldwide community of comparative lawyers in saying that the Elgar Encyclopedia of Comparative Law is eagerly awaited.’ - David L. Carey Miller, University of Aberdeen, UK

Nick Smith “I Was Wrong: The Meanings of Apologies”
Cambridge University Press | 2008-02-25 | ISBN: 0521865522 | 310 pages | PDF | 1,1 Mb
Apologies pervade our news headlines and our private affairs, but how should we evaluate these often vague and deceptive rituals? Discussing numerous examples from ancient and recent history, I Was Wrong: On The Meanings of Apologies argues that we suffer from considerable confusion about the moral meanings and social functions of these complex interactions. Rather than asking whether a speech act “is or is not” an apology, Smith offers a nuanced theory of apologetic meaning. Smith leads us with a clear voice though a series of rich philosophical and interdisciplinary questions, arguing that apologies have evolved from a confluence of diverse cultural and religious practices that do not translate easily into pluralistic secular discourse. After describing several varieties of apologies between individuals, Smith turns to collectives. Although apologies from corporations, governments, and other groups can be profoundly significant, Smith guides readers to appreciate the kinds of meaning that collective apologies often do not convey and warns of the dangers of collective acts of contrition that allow individual wrongdoers to obscure their personal blame. Dr. Smith is an assistant professor of philosophy at the University of New Hampshire. A graduate of Vassar College, he earned a law degree from SUNY at Buffalo and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Vanderbilt University. Before coming to UNH, he worked as a litigator for LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene, and MacRae and as a judicial clerk for the Honorable R.L. Nygaard of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. He specializes in the philosophy of Law, Politics, and Society and he writes on and teaches aesthetics. He is working with Cambridge University Press on the sequel to I Was Wrong, applying his framework for apologetic meanings to examples in criminal and civil law. His writings have appeared in journals such as Continental Philosophy Review, Social Theory and Practice, The Journal of Social Philosophy, Culture, Theory & Critique, The Rutgers Law Journal, and The Buffalo Law Review.

Western Diseases: An Evolutionary Perspective (US$150)
Stationary Office | Pages: 236 | 2008-06-30 | ISBN: 0521851807 | 2 MB
As a group, western diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, allergies and mental health problems constitute one of the major problems facing humans at the beginning of the 21st century, particularly as they extend into poorer countries. An evolutionary perspective has much to offer standard biomedical understandings of western diseases. At the heart of this approach is the notion that human evolution occurred in circumstances very different from the modern affluent western environment and that, as a consequence, human biology is not adapted to the contemporary western environment. Written with an anthropological perspective and aimed at advanced undergraduates and graduates taking courses in the ecology and evolution of disease, Tessa Pollard applies and extends this evolutionary perspective by analysing trends in rates of western diseases and providing a new synthesis of current understandings of evolutionary processes, and of the biology and epidemiology of disease.

Molecular Mechanisms of Exocytosis (Molecular Biology Intelligence Unit)
Springer | 2006-11-28 | ISBN: 0387399607 | 178 pages | PDF | 12 Mb
Exocytosis is a fundamental cellular process that is used by eukaryotic cells to release a variety of biological compounds including peptide hormones and neurotransmitters or to insert specific lipids and proteins in the plasma membrane. In recent years, a multidisciplinary approach promoted an extraordinary progress in the understanding of the molecular mechanisms regulating exocytosis. This led to the discovery of a large number of components belonging to the machinery that governs the fusion of secretory vesicles with plasma membranes in different cell systems, including neuronal and endocrine cells. The basic machinery required for vesicle fusion turned out to be well conserved through evolution from yeast to man. So far, because of the large number of components involved, understanding of the molecular basis of exocytosis has remained the privilege of a relatively small group of specialists. This book, written by recognized experts in the field aims at clarifying for a non-specialist audience the role of the key players in the exocytotic process not only in neuronal and endocrine cells but also in a variety of other relevant cell systems. The book represents a unique collection of up-to-date reviews that will introduce researchers and students to the forefront of this rapidly moving and fascinating field.

Richard A. Mollin “Codes: The Guide to Secrecy From Ancient to Modern Times”
Chapman & Hall/CRC | 2005-05-24 | ISBN: 1584884703 | 704 pages | PDF | 4,7 Mb
From the Rosetta Stone to public-key cryptography, the art and science of cryptology has been used to unlock the vivid history of ancient cultures, to turn the tide of warfare, and to thwart potential hackers from attacking computer systems. Codes: The Guide to Secrecy from Ancient to Modern Times explores the depth and breadth of the field, remaining accessible to the uninitiated while retaining enough rigor for the seasoned cryptologist. The book begins by tracing the development of cryptology from that of an arcane practice used, for example, to conceal alchemic recipes, to the modern scientific method that is studied and employed today. The remainder of the book explores the modern aspects and applications of cryptography, covering symmetric- and public-key cryptography, cryptographic protocols, key management, message authentication, e-mail and Internet security, and advanced applications such as wireless security, smart cards, biometrics, and quantum cryptography. DotAn8 (3D Modeling and Animation Magazine) April 2008
English | 21 pages | PDF | 3.7 MB
DotAn8, as you may or may not be aware this is an attempt to resurrect the magazine that was originally created by Rounder, but for some unknown reason was left to fester after only two issues. The revamped first issue was received with mixed reviews, however in the main was well supported. This is an extremely enjoyable sideline to modelling with anim8or, and is currently occupying seventy five percent of our time.
