J. F. Traub, “Iterative Methods for the Solution of Equations (Prentice-Hall Series in Automatic Computation)”
American Mathematical Society | 1997-10 | ISBN: 0828403120 | 310 pages | DjVu | 2,3 MB
From the Preface (1964): “This book presents a general theory of iteration algorithms for the numerical solution of equations and systems of equations. The relationship between the quantity and the quality of information used by an algorithm and the efficiency of the algorithm is investigated. Iteration functions are divided into four classes depending on whether they use new information at one or at several points and whether or not they reuse old information.
Known iteration functions are systematized and new classes of computationally effective iteration functions are introduced. Our interest in the efficient use of information is influenced by the widespread use of computing machines … The mathematical foundations of our subject are treated with rigor, but rigor in itself is not the main object. Some of the material is of wider application … Most of the material is new and unpublished. Every attempt has been made to keep the subject in proper historical perspective … ”

Robert J.P. Williams, John S. Rowlinson, Allan Chapman, “Chemistry at Oxford: A History from 1600 to 2005″
Royal Society of Chemistry | 2008-12 | ISBN: 0854041397 | 250 pages | PDF | 5,6 MB
This fascinating and unique history reveals the major influence of the Oxford Chemistry School on the advancement of chemistry. It shows how the nature of the University, and individuals within it, have shaped the school and made great achievements both in teaching and research. The book will appeal to those interested in the history of science and education, the city of Oxford and chemistry in general.
Chemistry has been studied in Oxford for centuries but this book focuses on the last 400 years and, in particular, the seminal work of Robert Boyle, Robert Hooke, and the proto- Royal Society of the 1650’s. Arranged in chronological fashion, it includes specialist studies of particular areas of innovation.
The book shows that chemistry has advanced, not just as a consequence of research but, because of the idiosynchratic nature of the collegiate system and the characters of the individuals involved. In other words, it demonstrates that science is a human endeavour and its advance in any institution is conditioned by the organization and people within it.
For chemists, the main appeal will be the book’s examination of the way separate branches of chemistry (organic, physical, inorganic and biological) have evolved in Oxford. It also enables comparison with the development of the subject at other universities such as Cambridge, London and Manchester.
For historians and sociologists, the book reveals the motivations of both scientists and non-scientists in the management of the School. It exposes the unusual character of Oxford University and the tensions between science and administration. The desire of the college to retain its academic values in the face of external and financial pressures is emphasized.

James D. Edmonds, “Relativistic Reality: A Modern View (Knots and Everything)”
World Scientific Publishing Company | 1998-03 | ISBN: 9810228511 | 342 pages | PDF | 11,6 MB
It appears that the old argument about Lorentz vs. Galileo relativity is passing into history. The Lorentz symmetry may soon become obsolete itself, just as the Galileo symmetry did about 1990. The successes of QED represent real progress in our quest to understand nature. The answer is not to go back, as most “outsiders” propose, but to go forward - beyond Einstein, to new ideas and equations that will match nature even better than QED does.
This book shows us a new view of relativity and quantum equations. It has new equations that extend Lorentz, Maxwell and Dirac.

J. Scott Carter, “How Surfaces Intersect in Space: An Introduction to Topology, 2nd Edition (Series on Knots and Everything)”
World Scientific Publishing Company | 1995-05-11 | ISBN: 9810220820 | 340 pages | PDF | 8,3 MB
This text presents pictures that illustrates standard examples in low dimensional topology. It begins at the most basic level (the intersection of coordinate planes) and gives hands on constructions of examples in topology: the projective plane, Poincare’s example of a homology sphere, lens spaces, knotted surfaces, 2-sphere eversions and higher dimensional manifolds.
The text explains the importance of the examples and the techniques without being bogged down in technicalities. The book is a guide to a wide variety of topics. It should be of use to undergraduates who want to learn geometric topology and to graduate students who want examples with which they can make computations and who need an elementary description of topological spaces. It should also be interesting to other scientists and mathematicians who want to learn some examples of topological spaces.

Teaching Academic Writing in European Higher Education
Springer | 2003 | ISBN: 140201208X | Pages: 240 | PDF | 3.98 MB
The writing projects introduced in Teaching Academic Writing in European Higher Education have been pioneering as their country’s first endeavors towards a research-based teaching of academic writing. They serve as guiding examples for educators and administrators of European universities that are interested in starting and developing writing programs or writing centers themselves.
The structure of this book reflects the specific needs for and demands from writing instruction in certain stages of transition from school to university, from graduate to post graduate and to professional training. The chapters display writer-, text- and discipline-based approaches.
Teaching Academic Writing in European Higher Education describes in detail teaching philosophies, curricular structures, research approaches and organizational models used in European countries. It offers concrete teaching strategies and examples: from individual tutorials to large classes, from face-to-face to web-based teaching. The authors address educational and cultural differences between writing instruction in Europe and the US, and show how European academic writing facilities and programs take part in an international quest for new approaches to teaching and tutoring in higher education.

John J. Drummond, “Historical Dictionary of Husserl’s Philosophy (Historical Dictionaries of Religions, Philosophies and Movements)”
The Scarecrow Press, Inc. | 2007-12-28 | ISBN: 081085368X | 288 pages | PDF | 2 MB
“Clear and scrupulously informative…Drummond strikes an impressive balanace between rigor of content and accessibility that should serve the needs of readers of widely varying backgrounds….Highly recommended.” — Choice 2008
Edmund Husserl (1859-1938) is widely regarded as the founding figure of the philosophical movement of “phenomenology.”
Husserl’s philosophical program was both embraced and rejected by many, but in either case, his ideas set the stage for and exercised an enormous influence on the development of much of the philosophy that followed. In particular, his thought provides the backdrop and impetus for movements such as existentialism, hermeneutics, and deconstruction. Also, because of his career-long concerns with logic and mathematics, there are many points of contact between Husserl’s phenomenology and so-called “analytical philosophy,” further cementing study of Husserl’s thought across the philosophical spectrum.
The Historical Dictionary of Husserl’s Philosophy provides the means to approach the texts of Husserl, as well as those of his major commentators. This is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, an extensive bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on key terms and neologisms, as well as brief discussions of Husserl’s major works and of some of his most important predecessors, contemporaries, and successors.

College Writing: A Personal Approach to Academic Writing 3rd Edition
Boynton/Cook | 2002 | ISBN: 0867095237 | Pages: 256 | PDF | 1.27 MB
Writing is a varied critical and imaginative process, not a rigid adherence to a set of conventions. Based on that premise, the third edition of College Writing, like its previous editions, continually exhorts students to find and celebrate their own voices. In fact, it is this affirmation of individual creativity that sets College Writing apart from other process-oriented rhetorics.
Lively and conversational in tone, the third edition boasts a writer-to-writer perspective that will put students at ease. College Writing walks students through the main elements of writing, from discovery and research to revising and editing. At the same time, author Toby Fulwiler allows for many detours in his step-by-step approach, with frequent reminders that everyone’s processes are unique and that establishing and maintaining a personal voice can be achieved while meeting conventional academic expectations.
Fulwiler examines the different, yet overlapping stages of writing. Goals for Academic Writing: ESL students and their instructors
John Benjamins Pub Co | 2006 | ISBN: 9027219699 | Pages: 204 | PDF | 1.42 MB
This book documents the results of a multi-year project that investigated the goals for writing improvement among 45 students and their instructors in intensive courses of English as a Second Language (ESL) then, a year later, in academic programs at two Canadian universities. The researchers present a detailed framework to describe these goals from the perspectives of the students as well as their instructors.
The goals are analyzed for groups of students from particular backgrounds internationally, for changes over time, and in relation to the ESL and academic courses. The authors use activity theory, goal theory, various sociolinguistic concepts, and multiple data sources (interviews, observations, stimulated recalls, questionnaires, and text analyses) to provide a contextually-grounded perspective on learning, teaching, writing, second-language development, and curriculum policy. The book will interest researchers, educators, and administrators of ESL, university, college, and literacy programs around the world.
