Mark E. E. Davis, Robert J. J. Davis, “Fundamentals of Chemical Reaction Engineering”
McGraw-Hill | 2002-07-22 | ISBN: 007245007X | 384 pages | PDF | 20 MB
”Chemistry in the hands of Engineers!” This mantra, initiated and developed largely in the research programs of academic chemical engineers over the last few decades, has now made its way into the core undergraduate curriculum in the form of a new Chemical Reaction Engineering textbook by Cal Tech’s Mark E. Davis and U VA’s Robert J. Davis…” -Michael T. Klein, Rutgers University
This book is an introduction to the quantitative treatment of chemical reaction engineering. It is appropriate for a one-semester undergraduate (or first-year graduate)course. The text provides a balanced approach: first, it covers both homogeneous and heterogeneous reacting systems; second, it covers both chemical reaction engineering and chemical reactor engineering.
Here’s what reviewers have to say:
“The Davis/Davis book really brings out the strong coupling between chemical reactions and reactor design concepts in a pedagogical fashion.” -Michael S. Wong, Rice University
“Great use of chemical reactions as teaching examples” -Michael S. Wong, Rice University
“The examples, illustrations, and vignettes given in the text are very well done, and are of either fundamental or practical interest.” -David F. Cox, Virginia Tech
“A primary motivation to use this text is the arrangement of the introductory material on kinetics. The initial description of reactions and kinetics in Davis/Davis appears prior to the introduction of reactor material balances.” -David F. Cox, Virginia Tech
“Concise development and discussion of material” -Michael S. Wong, Rice University

Jedwin Smith, “Fatal Treasure: Greed and Death, Emeralds and Gold, and the Obsessive Search for the Legendary Ghost Galleon Atocha”
Wiley | 2005-02-22 | ISBN: 0471696803 | 272 pages | PDF | 1,6 MB
“In real life-especially off the Florida coast-things can have fatal consequences. Fatal Treasure is a truly compelling read.”
-Aphrodite Jones, New York Times bestselling author of Cruel Sacrifice and All She Wanted
In 1622, hundreds of people lost their lives to the curse of the Spanish galleon Atocha-and they would not be the last. Fatal Treasure combines the rousing adventure of Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea with the compelling characters and local color of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
It tells the powerful true story of the relentless quest to find the Atocha and reclaim her priceless treasures from the sea. You’ll follow Mel Fisher, his family, and their intrepid team of treasure hunters as they dive beneath the treacherous waters of the Florida Straits and scour the ocean floor in search of gold, silver, and emeralds. And you’ll discover that nearly four centuries after the shipwreck, the curse of the Atocha is still a deadly force.
“On this day, the sea once again relinquished its hold on the riches and glory of seventeenth-century Spain. And by the grace of God, I would share the moment of glory . . . . I was reaching for my eighth emerald, another big one, when the invisible hands squeezed my trachea. In desperation, I clutched at my throat to pry away the enemy’s fingers. But no one had hold of me.”
-From the Prologue

Juan Carlos Augusto, Daniel Shapiro, “Advances in Ambient Intelligence: Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications”
IOS Press | 2007-11-15 | ISBN: 1586038001 | 200 pages | PDF | 2,5 MB
Ambient Intelligence lies at the confluence of several trends: the continued decrease in cost and size of computing technology; the increasing availability of networking and communication infrastructure; the growing public familiarity/comfort with computing artifacts; and practical advances in artificial intelligence.
These developments make it possible to contemplate the ubiquitous deployment of intelligent systems prototypically in smart homes, but more broadly in public spaces, private automobiles and on individual appliances and hand-held devices - in applications ranging from entertainment through eldercare, to safety critical device control. Ambient Intelligence is a young field. As a result, it has been natural to wonder what the technology can do to improve the way we live. At the same time, it is becoming increasingly important to ask: What do we want? since the intent is to embed technology in new and pervasive ways. The contributions in this volume provide a window into the visions and trends currently dominating the area of Ambient Intelligence. This publication is divided into three sections. The first describes visions for the future of Ambient Intelligence, the second addresses core technology of the field and the third provides an analysis of elements of the area which will demand special consideration during the future development of the area.

Peter H. St.George-Hyslop, William C. Mobley, Yves Christen, “Intracellular Traffic and Neurodegenerative Disorders”
Springer | 2008-12-18 | ISBN: 3540879404 | 184 pages | PDF | 10,3 MB
This book explores the role of sub-cellular trafficking in the pathogenesis, treatment and prevention of neurodegenerative diseases. Recent findings point to faulty trafficking as contributing to the dysfunction and degeneration of neurons and neural circuits. Increasingly, research is targeting the mechanisms responsible and means to address them therapeutically.
This book investigates the ways in which sub-cellular trafficking pathways play a role both in the pathological accumulation of these misfolded proteins and in attempts to clear them. Because subcellular protein trafficking has an important role in the biology of neuronal function and survival, this also addresses how trophic factors maintain cell: cell interactions and how the underlying mechanisms may be compromised in neurodegenerative diseases. Examples where the use of such trophic factors may provide a way to modify neurodegenerative diseases are investigated.

Power Over People
Oxford University Press, USA | 1992-09-03 | ISBN 0195075781 | PDF | Pages 272 | 12.3 MB
For most of us, life is spent in one vast electromagnetic field. In the office we sit in front of computer terminals, at home, in front of the television. We cook our meals in microwave ovens, trim our hedges with electric shears, illuminate our houses, workplaces, and streets with incandescent and fluorescent lighting. And until only recently, the potential hazards imposed by life in the shadows of high-voltage power lines have hardly been considered.
First published in 1973, Power Over People was the first book to address the frightening potential side effects of our dependence on electrical energy. Now brought up to date with a new introduction, and including an epilogue that offers the most current studies and findings available today, this classic book is more timely than ever. Louise Young here lays bare the short-sighted, materialistic policies of the electric power industry, showing how power and the conglomerates that produce it have clearly won out over rights and safety concerns of people. She provides disturbing documentary evidence that demonstrates how long-term exposure to radiation from power lines can cause brain cancer, childhood leukemia, as well as damage to the nervous system. Through the course of the book we come to understand that what is often blindly accepted as “progress” can mean the inexorable advance of environmental destruction and the withering–rather than enhancing–of the quality of life in America.
Based on a case-study of a small, rural community in Ohio, Young shows in compelling fashion what happens when a grass-roots group of concerned citizens resists the construction of the world’s largest electrical transmission towers, literally in their own backyards. Her story of their ultimate failure becomes a stinging indictment of indifferent government agencies and the lax laws that fail to protect the environment.
Lively, readable, and, at times, even shocking, this is a book for environmentally-minded and safety-conscious readers of the 1990s. Its wealth of information, its incisive analysis, and its bold confrontation of facts we can no longer afford to ignore make Power Over People a book everyone should read and reflect upon.
