Tim Miles, John Westcombe, Diana Ditchfield, “Music and Dyslexia: A Positive Approach”
Wiley | 2008-04-25 | ISBN: 0470065575 | 192 pages | PDF | 1,3 MB
Music and dyslexia is of particular interest for two reasons. Firstly, research suggests that music education can benefit young dyslexics as it helps them focus on auditory and motor timing skills and highlights the rhythms of language. Secondly, dyslexic musicians at a more advanced level face particular challenges such as sight-reading, written requirements of music examinations and extreme performance nerves.
This is a sequel to the highly successful Music and Dyslexia: Opening New Doors, published in 2001. The field of dyslexia has developed rapidly, particularly in the area of neuropsychology. Therefore this book focuses on these research advances, and draws out the aspects of music education that benefit young dyslexics. The contributors also discuss the problems that dyslexic musicians face, and several chapters are devoted to sight-reading and specific strategies that dyslexics can use to help them sight-read.
The book offers practical techniques and strategies, to teachers and parents to help them work with young dyslexics and dyslexic musicians.

Kevin Barrett, “Defective Construction Work”
Wiley-Blackwell | 2008-07-28 | ISBN: 063205929X | 224 pages | PDF | 1,3 MB
Defective construction work, whether the result of inadequate design, faulty workmanship or poor materials – or some combination of these failings – is a frequent cause of legal disputes. Someone is usually to blame, either the builder or one or more of the professional consultants, or even the entire project team. It is important therefore that the project team should possess a good working knowledge of their responsibilities and liabilities.
Written by a solicitor with over twenty years of experience of building disputes, this book examines the responsibilities and liabilities of the project team when defects occur. It sets out the background role of the common law and statute and includes detailed discussion of important case law affecting the construction process from inception through to completion, together with a consideration of the impact of letters of intent, ‘no contract’ situations, and specific provisions of model conditions of contract.

Chimay J. Anumba, Kirti Ruikar, “e-Business in Construction”
Wiley-Blackwell | 2008-08-25 | ISBN: 1405182342 | 304 pages | PDF | 2,5 MB
With a number of disparate, often geographically distributed, organisations involved in the delivery of construction projects, there has been considerable interest in e-business tools within the construction industry. These tools open up a range of possibilities for the industry to rethink existing processes and working methods, so their use is increasingly common. Nevertheless, there has been little definitive guidance for practitioners, researchers and students on the major issues in electronic business from a construction perspective.
By bringing together 16 contributions from research and industry covering theory, technological issues, practical implementation and legal matters, and illustrated with a number of case studies, e-Business in Construction fills that gap. Starting with the theoretical aspects of e-commerce and moving on to consider the specifics of the construction context, it includes a mechanism for the assessment of the e-readiness of construction sector organisations. The middle part of the book focuses on the role of various technologies in e-business, with examples included as appropriate. This is followed by a discussion of practical, legal and trust issues. The potential of next generation of information and communication technologies is also addressed.
With a fine blend of theoretical and practical aspects of e-commerce in construction, and well illustrated with a number of industrial case studies, e-Business in Construction will find an appreciative audience of construction practitioners, researchers and students at all levels.

Geoffrey Pritchard, “Plastics Additives: A Rapra Market Report”
Smithers Rapra Press | 2008-05-01 | ISBN: 1859574998 | 206 pages | PDF | 1,8 MB
The plastics industry has seen restructuring and mergers, and new manufacturing processes and specifications have altered customers requirements for additives. Plastics Additives, a new market report from Rapra, offers a fresh account of the additives market.
Plastics Additives begins with an executive summary of the important points arising from the report, followed by an overview of the significant trends in the four largest plastics market sectors: packaging, construction, automotive and electrical and electronics.
The report focuses on the important issues within Europe, with comment on the relevant trends in North America and Asia.
The additive families are considered with an outline of the technical issues and the trends driving the markets. The report provides specific product examples and technology developments. Product types covered include antiblocking agents, biocides, antioxidants, antistatic agents, blowing agents, clarifying and nucleating agents, compatibilisers, fillers (including nanofillers), flame retardants, heat stabilisers, impact modifiers, lubricants and process oils, plasticisers and light stabilisers.
New products may be promoted amongst other reasons on grounds of reducing costs, minimising handling and storage problems, improving process efficiency, reducing product defects, or improving product performance. The main marketplaces for each additive type are discussed in this report and the developments in specific properties or trends outlined.
Demand for additives is obviously strongly dependent on demand for plastics, however other drivers are important: evolving food distribution with demand for improved packaging, changes in fire regulations, use of materials at higher temperatures in for example the automotive and electronic component industries, recycling issues. This report provides discussion of the trends in material consumption and specific additive groups. It also includes brief company news and information for some of the leading additive suppliers.
Health and safety considerations and regulatory pressures have had a major impact on certain classes of additives, especially heat stabilisers, flame retardants and plasticisers. A section of this report is dedicated to these developments with topics covered including REACH, end-of-life disposal, chemicals of specific concern, biocides, flame retardants and food contact applications.

Mechanics of Materials: A Modern Integration of Mechanics and Materials in Structural Design
Publisher: Academic Press | Pages: 408 | 2005-03-15 | ISBN 0123838525 | DJVU | 7 MB
This new book is the first to bridge the often disparate bodies of knowledge now known as applied mechanics and materials science. Using a very methodological process to introduce mechanics, materials, and design issues in a manner called “total structural design”, this book seeks a solution in “total design space” Features of the text include:
* A generalized design template for solving structural design problems.
* Every chapter first introduces mechanics concepts through deformation, equilibrium, and energy considerations. Then the constitutive nature of the chapter topic is presented, followed by a link between mechanics and materials concepts. Details of analysis and materials selection are subsequently discussed.
* A concluding example design problem is provided in most chapters, so that students may get a sense of how mechanics and materials come together in the design of a real structure.
* Exercises are provided that are germane to aerospace, civil, and mechanical engineering applications, and include both deterministic and design-type problems.
* Accompanying website contains a wealth of information complementary to this text, including a set of virtual labs. Separate site areas are available for the instructor and students.

Global Production: A Handbook for Strategy and Implementation
Publisher: Springer | Pages: 401 | 2008-01 | ISBN 3540716521 | PDF | 6 MB
What is the best configuration for a global production network? What are the different dynamics in low-cost vs. high-cost countries? Getting the answers right is key to building a competitive and efficient global production network. Centers of economic activity are shifting profoundly, globally and even regionally. Production is shifting even more dramatically than the economy as a whole, making it critical for decision makers to know what criteria matter most and how to make the right decisions on where to invest.
Regardless of the industry involved, an optimized global footprint can translate to a competitive advantage. A comprehensive redesign typically yields a 20 to 40 percent reduction in manufacturing costs. Global production and purchasing operations create a platform for entry into new markets. Planning and implementing a sustainable globalization strategy, however, takes considerable effort; this book is there to help in that task.

“A LM IA Ceramic Kiln in South-Central Crete: Function and Pottery Production (Hesperia Supplement 30)”
Publisher: American School of Classical Studies at Athens | 2001 | ISBN: 0876615302 | PDF | 172 pages | 7.5 MB
An in-depth study of the Late Minoan IA cross-draft kiln found in excavation at Kommos, Crete. The kiln is of a type popular during the Neopalatial period and its good state of preservation has allowed the authors to speculate about its original internal layout and use as well as about the roof that covered it. Much of the large quantity of obviously locally produced pottery found associated with the kiln is analyzed in detail, allowing for the first time the study of the shapes, decoration, and technical characteristics of vases known to have been fired in a specific LM IA kiln.
The book presents an integrated program of analytical techniques used both to illustrate the range of firing temperatures, the compositional similarities and differences in the clay used, and aspects of the firing process and to make suggestions about the upper kiln structure. Offered here is a valuable contribution to our knowledge of their technology and organization of ceramic production at the beginning of the Late Minoan period, which will form a basis for studies of pottery provenience and exchange.

Gnomon Workshop Character Design For Animation Part1 & Part2 | 3.5 GB
Part1
In this DVD, Gil Rimmer simultaneously develops two characters, Francis and Paulo, who are classic pugilists in a fictional turn of the century metropolis. This first in a two DVD series focuses on creating the faces and heads of the two fighters, using dynamic silhouettes, rhythms, graphic design and composition principles. Gil stresses the various visual relationships within individual characters while addressing the complementary relationship between the two fighters. Through a methodical process, beginning with a design brief followed by reference gathering, through traditional approaches to silhouette design and ending on detailed ortho- graphic views and expression sheets, Gil shares his thoughts about the design process and its place in the animation production pipeline
Part2
In this second in a two DVD series, Gil continues to develop Francis’ and Paulo’s designs into full-body orthographic and 3/4 views. The demonstration finally culminates in a ?look and feel? master shot posing the fighters in an alley behind Paulo’s butcher shop. In the process, Gil reinforces the key principles from the first DVD: dynamic silhouettes, rhythms, graphic design and composition. He then explores the design brief further, introducing unique lighting approaches, shadow and light relationships, larger composition fundamentals, color treatments to complement the mood, and applying textures, atmosphere and visual effects to enhance the final result.
