The Grammar of Words
Publisher: OXFORD | UNIVERSITY PRESS | ISBN: 0199258473 | edition 2005 | PDF | 323 pages | 1.5 mb
Each textbook provides a specific perspective on the discipline that it aims to introduce. Therefore, writing this book has not only been a challenge for me because of the didactic demands that each textbook has not only been a challenge for me because of the didactic demands that each textbook imposes on its writer. It also forced me to rethink my own ideas on morphology in confrontation with those of others, and to come up with a consistent picture of what morphology is about.
This perspective is summarized by the title of this book, The Grammar of Words, which gives the linguistic entity of the word a pivotal role in understanding morphology.

A Voice for Nonprofits
Brookings Institution Press | ISBN: 0815709129 | 2003 | PDF | 210 pages | 5 Mb
Nonprofit organizations are playing an increasingly important role in delivering basic government services. Yet they are discouraged by federal law from participating in legislative lobbying efforts—even on issues that affect their clients directly. Without the involvement of nonprofits in the governmental process, the vulnerable populations they serve are left without effective representation in the political system.
A Voice for Nonprofits analyzes the effect of government restrictions on the participation of nonprofits in the policymaking process and suggests ways to address the problems.
The relationship between nonprofits and the government is ideal in many respects, according to Jeffrey M. Berry and David F. Arons. By underwriting operating budgets and subcontracting the administration of programs to nonprofits, governments at all levels are able to take advantage of nonprofits’ dedication, imagination, and private fund-raising skills. However, as nonprofits assume greater responsibility for delivering services traditionally provided by government, that responsibility is not matched by a congruous increase in policy influence. Berry and Arons believe the lobbying restrictions should be eased so that nonprofits may become more involved in public policymaking. Their recommendations are designed to ensure that nonprofit organizations—and the constituencies they serve—are effectively represented in the American political system.

Private Solutions for Infrastructure in Rwanda (Country Framework Report)
World Bank Publications | ISBN: 0821359657 | 2004 | PDF | 103 pages | 5 Mb
The Rwandan Government outlines its vision for the development of the country in “Vision 2020,” which elaborates the economic goals the Government aims to achieve. One of the major themes that lies at the heart of this vision is the refurbishment and development of Rwanda’s core economic infrastructure.
This book looks at the progress Rwanda has made and provides a review of the country’s infrastructure in the transport, energy, telecommunications, and water and sanitation sectors and presents suggestions on improving the environment for private sector involvement in infrastructure. Although the span of the content is broad, the book focuses in particular on the potential that exists to involve the private sector in infrastructure and the policies and actions that are necessary to make this happen.
Private Solutions for Infrastructure in Rwanda provides an objective assessment of the condition of Rwanda’s infrastructure sectors and of the institutional and policy frameworks that are associated with them. It also provides a clear route map for infrastructure sector reform, as well as highlights both the opportunities that exist for the private sector and the role that the donor community can play in assisting the Government with establishing priorities in infrastructure.

Empress Theodora: Partner of Justinian
University of Texas Press | ISBN: 0292721056 | 2002| PDF | 146 pages | 3 Mb
Even by modern standards, the Empress Theodora (?-548) had a remarkable rise to power. Born into the lowest class of Byzantine society, she worked as an actress in burlesque theatre. Yet she attracted the love of the future emperor Justinian, who, to the astonishment of proper society, made her not only his wife but also his partner in government.
Justinian’s respect for and trust in Theodora gave her power in her own right unmatched by almost any other Roman or Byzantine empress. In this book, James Allan Evans provides a scholarly, yet highly accessible account of the life and times of the Empress Theodora.

H WF Saggs “Everyday Life in Babylonia and Assyria”
G P Putnam Sons | 1965 | ISBN: 0713416645 | 208 pages | PDF | 1,7 MB
THE way of life with which this book deals flourished for 2000 years of the most formative period of human history,
and it would require far more than the space available even touch upon every significant aspect of this subject. I have
there,-e had to confine myself to a more modest task.
What I have empted has been to give an introduction to the
subject by a sketch Babylonian and Assyrian life at a few key-points, seen in the context of the historical setting.
I need hardly point out to my professional colleagues that this ok is not written for them; therefore, if, in using the
original sources, I have chosen, for the sake of English idiom, to translate a singular by a plural, or to alter a tense, I
trust they will not turn and rend me. My main purpose will be served if I succeed in convincing some of my readers,
amongst the many now interested in ancient world, that Babylonian and Assyrian civilisation is not wholly alien to our
own.
Although I have been able in many cases to suggest sources for illustrations, the credit and responsibility for the final
selection and treatment of the illustrations belong, not to me as author, but to the talented artist, Mrs H. Fairfield, and
to Mr P. Kemmis Betty.

Globalizing America: The USA in World Integration (New Horizons in International Business Series)
Edward Elgar Publishing | ISBN: 1858989817 | 2007-12 | PDF | 301 pages | 2 Mb
Globalization is a largely ungoverned process of deepening integration, in which American firms are the most active agents of structural change. There are general benefits, in terms of growth and employment, but there are also costs which can generate pressures for protection of the US home market. The book discusses that prospect while reviewing the expansion of interdependencies between the USA and the rest of the world.
The authors address questions in current business and policy literature regarding the structural linkages evolving in the globalization process. The authors conclude that the US administration and American firms have to be more responsive to the interests of the international community that are being vitally affected by the integrating effects of transnational production and world trade. “Globalizing America” should be valuable reading for international business and international political economy scholars, and for planners in multinational firms.

Consumer Protection and the Criminal Law: Law, Theory, and Policy in the UK
Cambridge University Press | ISBN: 0521590809 | 2001 | PDF | 268 pages | 6 Mb
To what extent should criminal law be used to protect the consumer? Peter Cartwright evaluates the role of criminal law sanctions in consumer protection from an economic and social perspective. In this important new study the author examines the rationales for protecting consumers, and considers the role that legal techniques play in fulfilling these. In addition, he analyzes criminal law doctrines such as strict, corporate, and vicarious liability, and suggests that they require re-evaluation.
This study will be of interest to academics, undergraduate and post-graduate students as well as lawyers.

African Entrepreneurship: Muslim Fula Merchants in Sierra Leone (Ohio RIS Africa Series)
Ohio University Press | ISBN: 0896802078 | 1999 | PDF | 317 pages | 15 Mb
A generously illustrated selection of John Baines’s influential writings on two core areas of ancient Egyptian civilization: the role of writing, which was very different in antiquity from what is familiar in the modern world, and the importance of visual culture. These questions are explored through a number of case studies.
The volume assembles articles that were scattered in publications in a variety of disciplines, making available key contributions on core problems of theory, comparison, and analysis in the study of many civilizations and offering important points of departure for further research. Three wholly new essays are included, and the overall approach is an interdisciplinary one, synthesizing insights from archaeology, anthropology, and art history as well as Egyptology.

Substitutions in Dynamics, Arithmetics, and Combinatorics (Lecture Notes in Mathematics, Vol. 1794)
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 3540441417 | edition 2002 | PDF | 402 pages | 3,3 mb
A certain category of infinite strings of letters on a finite alphabet is presented here, chosen among the ’simplest’ possible one may build, both because they are very deterministic and because they are built by simple rules (a letter is replaced by a word, a sequence is produced by iteration). These substitutive sequences have a surprisingly rich structure.
The authors describe the concepts of quantity of natural interactions, with combinatorics on words, ergodic theory, linear algebra, spectral theory, geometry of tilings, theoretical computer science, diophantine approximation, trancendence, graph theory.
This volume fulfils the need for a reference on the basic definitions and theorems, as well as for a state-of-the-art survey of the more difficult and unsolved problems.

Garner’s Modern American Usage
Oxford University Press, USA | ISBN: 0195161912 | 2003 | PDF | 928 pages | 28 Mb
The first edition of Garner’s Modern American Usage established Bryan Garner as “an American equivalent of Fowler” (Library Journal). With more than 23,500 copies sold, this witty, accessible, and engaging book has become the new classic reference work praised by professional copyeditors as well as the general public looking for clear advice on how to write more effectively.
In 1999, Choice magazine named it an Outstanding Academic Book and the American Library Association dubbed it an Outstanding Reference Source. With thousands of succinct entries, longer essays on key issues and problematic areas, and up-to-the-minute judgments on everything from trendy words to the debate over personal pronouns, GMAU is approachable yet authoritative. Since the book first appeared in 1998, Bryan Garner has diligently continued tracking how we use our language. The second edition includes hundreds of new entries ranging from Dubya to weaponize (coined in 1984 but used extensively since 9/11) to foot-and-mouth, plethora (a “highfalutin equivalent of too many”), Slang, Standard English, and Dialects. It also updates hundreds of existing entries. Meanwhile, Garner has written a major essay on the great grammar debate between descriptivists and prescriptivists. Painstakingly researched with copious citations from books and newspapers and newsmagazines, this new edition furthers Garner’s mission to help everyone become a better writer, and to enjoy it in the process.

John L. Ward, “Unconventional Wisdom: CounterintuitiveA InsightsA for Family Business Success”
Publisher: Wiley | 2005-07-29 | ISBN 0470021659 | PDF | 274 pages | 10.1 MB
Family businesses prosper by pursuing unconventional strategies. Because they are values-driven and think very long-term, they take approaches not popular with current management fashion or most companies. That is the key to their competitive advantage. However, family businesses must find ways to simultaneously serve business needs and family goals, which require very different priorities and principles.
As a result, they must think paradoxically, and find insights that single-purpose enterprises need not contemplate. They must dare to be different. Family business requires a different governance system, but it must nevertheless be one that can be controlled. Building on insights from the worldA~?s premier family business executive education course, this book offers the Unconventional Wisdom needed to leverage the strategic and cultural uniqueness of a family business for enduring success.

Proceedings of the Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy , Volume XXI (2005)
Publisher: Brill Academic Publishers | ISBN: 9004153535 | edition 2006 | PDF | 319 pages | 1.16 mb
With one exception, this volume contains papers and commentaries originally presented to the Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy during the 2004-5 academic year. Of the seven colloquia that make up this volume, two deal with Plato while the rest are dedicated to Aristotle.
The topics on Plato are almost exclusively political: (1) a reading of the Republic that places it within the genre of writings ‘On the Politeia, and (2) a discussion of the role of preambles in Plato’s Laws. There is a wider range of topics on Aristotle, ranging from his views on the relationship between external goods and happiness, through his account of phantasia, and all the way to his theory of metaphor. In relation to Aristotle also, one colloquium provides a detailed analysis of his curious theory of the so-called ‘inner sense’, while another raises the question as to whether he might be regarded as a particularist in the philosophy of action like some modern theorists. As usual for this series, most colloquia contain a paper and commentary which provide a lively exchange on these topics.
