John Horgan, “Der menschliche Geist”
Fischer | 2001 | ISBN: 3596151392 | 428 pages | PDF | 1,9 MB

–Rob Lightner

U. Kohlenbach, “Applied Proof Theory: Proof Interpretations and their Use in Mathematics”
Springer | 2008 | ISBN: 3540775323 | 536 pages | PDF | 3,2 MB

This is the first treatment in book format of proof-theoretic transformations — known as proof interpretations — that focuses on applications to ordinary mathematics. It covers both the necessary logical machinery behind the proof interpretations that are used in recent applications as well as – via extended case studies – carries out some of these applications in full detail.

This subject has its historical roots in pioneering work of G. Kreisel going back to the 1950s but was developed more systematically only during the past 15-20 years, mainly by the author and his collaborators in numerous paper. The main direction in this work is to apply proof transformations that originally had been developed in the course of foundational studies (erg. consistency proofs and Hilbert’s program) as well as new versions and extensions thereof to concrete pieces of mathematics. This work so far only existed in the form of research papers that either developed the logical machinery and were published in logic journals or that presented concrete applications (mainly in analysis) and were published in analysis journals on the expense of dropping most of the logical background.

The present book for the first time tells the whole story: the logical theory, how to connect this theory up with ordinary mathematics and, finally, concrete applications in approximation theory and fixed point theory.

Database Design for Mere Mortals: A Hands-On Guide to Relational Database Design, Second Edition
Addison-Wesley Professional; 2 edition | 0201752840 | 672 pages | March 5, 2003 | CHM | 6 Mb

Programmers and software architects don’t really make a conscious decision to design an application (particularly one with online exposure) around the three-tier model-view-controller design pattern anymore. Three-tier, largely because of its adaptability and stability, is the norm. All of which means you need a database to underpin each of your applications. Designing your databases correctly can make the difference between slow-running, complicated code and software that’s speedy, modular, and easy to work with.

Database Design for Mere Mortals prepares someone with only a passing familiarity with databases for the important job of building the persistence layer (also called the data model) for software.
Michael Hernandez explains database design in tradesman’s terms. That is, he shows his readers how to identify the business problems that have to be satisfied by a database, then proceeds to explain how to build a solid solution to them. Hernandez’s approach combines procedural guidelines (first identify critical facts, then apply a certain logic to yield tables, then establish cross-references, and so on) with practical definitions that clear up much of the rich trove of jargon surrounding databases. He walks through numerous examples, and doesn’t shy away from the complexities that always exist in real customers’ requirements. If you’re not familiar with database design, and want to be, this is the book you need.

Methodius of Olympus: Divine Sovereignty, Human Freedom, and Life in Christ
Publisher: Catholic University of America Press | ISBN: 0813208750 | edition 1997 | CHM | 261 pages | 1,72 mb
Methodius, a Lycian Christian writer of the latter part of the third and early years of the fourth century, a Christian apologist, a teacher of ascetics, and a premier critic of Origen, remains a strangely obscure figure. His principal works, now reassembled in something like a coherent whole, comprise the largest body of Greek Christian remains to survive from his time, other than those of Eusebius of Caesareawhose disinclination to celebrate a critic of Origen contributed, in some part, to leaving Methodius in obscurity.

The writings are those of a distinct personality, with some skill as a literary stylist, who had a considerable knowledge of contemporary philosophy, a fascination with medical learning, and an extensive familiarity with earlier Christian writings, including at least a portion of Origen’s voluminous work.

Syncretism: The Religious Context of Christian Beginnings in Korea
Publisher: State University of New York | ISBN: 0791449416 | edition 2001 | PDF | 255 pages | 7,98 mb
When David Chung submitted his Ph.D. dissertation to the Department of Religion, Graduate Studies at Yale University in 1959, his supervisor, Dr. H. Richard Niebuhr, suggested that it be immediately sent to a publisher to be published as a book. Dr. Chung thought that he should have some corrections and modifications made before it could be published. Right after the submission of the dissertation, however, Dr. Chung had to return to Korea to take up a teaching position at the Seoul National University.

After a hectic year of settling down in Seoul, he was “snatched” by Konkuk University, a young and vigorously growing university in Seoul, to become its president.

RESURRECTION
Publisher: Sara Reinke | ISBN: NA | edition 2008 | PDF | 261 pages | 1,08 mb
In 2007, I took the novella, Resurrection and decided to rework it into a novel-length manuscript. This meant adding on about 20,000 words or so. Easy enough, or so I thought. What was supposed to be mostly minor revisions, some additions here and there, turned out to be a major overhaul — in the end, nothing short of an almost complete rewrite. Now for the first time, you can check out both versions of the story — the original novella-length incarnation, and this, the never-before-released novel-length version.

If you’ve read one, you definitely haven’t read them both, because the novel-length version has new twists and turns, new characters and even more suspense.

John A. McNeill, David Ricketts, “The Designer’s Guide to Jitter in Ring Oscillators”
Springer | 2009 | ISBN: 0387765263 | 276 pages | PDF | 48 MB

The Designer’s Guide to Low Jitter Oscillators emphasizes jitter for time domain applications so that there is not a need to translate from frequency domain. This provides a more direct path to the results for designing in an application area where performance is specified in the time domain. The book includes classification of oscillator types and an exhaustive guide to existing research literature which allows designers to find appropriate publications for more detailed design guidance. It also includes classification of measurement techniques to help designers understand how the eventual performance of circuit design is verified.

This book contains a CD-ROM with MATLAB examples of design optimization, system level behavioral simulation, and intuitive presentation of probability background.

The Designer’s Guide to Low Jitter Oscillators is a companion to The Designer’s Guide to High Purity Oscillators by Hegazi, Rael, and Abidi. This book is for practicing designers with BS or MS degrees and researchers working in fields where noise requirements are specified in the time domain.

Nick Wikeley , “Child Support: Law And Policy “
Publisher: Hart Publishing | 2006-11-26 | ISBN 1841135321 | PDF | 525 pages | 1.85 MB

Written by one of the UK’s leading scholars of welfare law, this book analyses the current child support legislation in its broader historical and social context, synthesising both doctrinal and socio-legal approaches to legal research and scholarship. The book draws on the historical and legal literature on the Poor Law and the development of both the public and private law obligation of child maintenance.

Modern child support law must also be considered in the context of both social and demographic changes and in the light of popular norms about child maintenance liabilities. The main part of the book is devoted to an analysis of the modern child support scheme, and the key issues are addressed: the distinction between applications in ‘private’ and ‘benefit’ cases and the extent to which the courts retain a role in child maintenance matters; the basis for, and the justification for, the exception from the obligation for parents with care on benefit to co-operate with the Child Support Agency where they fear ‘undue harm or distress’; the assessment of income for the purposes of the formula and the evidential difficulties this entails; the tension between the formula, which ignores the parent with care’s income, and the demands of distributive justice; the further conflict between the formula, under which liability is capped only for the very wealthy, and the traditional approach of private law, which is premised on children being entitled to maintenance rather than a share in family wealth; the treatment of special cases under the formula by way of ‘variations’ (formerly ‘departures’); the nature of decision-making and the scope for appeals; and the efficacy of the provisions relating to collection and enforcement.

The Guilford Press | 2007 | ISBN: 159385448X | Pages: 256 | PDF | 5.36 MB
Attachment research has tremendous potential for helping clinicians understand what happens when parent-child bonds are disrupted, and what can be done to help. Yet there remains a large gap between theory and practice in this area. This book reviews state-of-the-art knowledge on attachment and translates it into practical guidelines for therapeutic work. Leading scientist-practitioners present innovative strategies for assessing and intervening in parent-child relationship problems; helping young children recover from maltreatment or trauma; and promoting healthy development in adoptive and foster families.

Detailed case material in every chapter illustrates the applications of research-based concepts and tools in real-world clinical practice.
