The uniform approach and common language used in all discussions help to develop general understanding and insight on condensed phases chemical dynamics.

The applications discussed are among the most fundamental processes that underlie physical, chemical and biological phenomena in complex systems. The first part of the book starts with a general review of basic mathematical and physical methods (Chapter 1) and a few introductory chapters on quantum dynamics (Chapter 2), interaction of radiation and matter (Chapter 3) and basic properties of solids (chapter 4) and liquids (Chapter 5). In the second part the text embarks on a broad coverage of the main methodological approaches. The central role of classical and quantum time correlation functions is emphasized in Chapter 6. The presentation of dynamical phenomena in complex systems as stochastic processes is discussed in Chapters 7 and 8. The basic theory of quantum relaxation phenomena is developed in Chapter 9, and carried on in Chapter 10 which introduces the density operator, its quantum evolution in Liouville space, and the concept of reduced equation of motions. The methodological part concludes with a discussion of linear response theory in Chapter 11, and of the spin-boson model in chapter 12. The third part of the book applies the methodologies introduced earlier to several fundamental processes that underlie much of the dynamical behaviour of condensed phase molecular systems. Vibrational relaxation and vibrational energy transfer (Chapter 13), Barrier crossing and diffusion controlled reactions (Chapter 14), solvation dynamics (Chapter 15), electron transfer in bulk solvents (Chapter 16) and at electrodes/electrolyte and metal/molecule/metal junctions (Chapter 17), and several processes pertaining to molecular spectroscopy in condensed phases (Chapter 18) are the main subjects discussed in this part.

Bonner and Wiggin enumerate a long list of chronic ailments that imperil the American financial system–a massive trade deficit, soaring personal and government debt, a housing bubble, runaway military expenditures. These problems “hardly disturb the sleep of the imperial race,” the authors write. “[But] all empires must pass away.” Bonner and Wiggin argue that American imperial delusions are similar to the fantasies that fueled the dot-com market mania. They recommend readers buy gold as insurance in the event of a financial crisis. Empire of Debt flounders when discussing how America indebted itself; the authors blame the Federal Reserve Board’s low interest rates but gloss over the fact that rates were slashed because the U.S. teetered on the brink of deflation in 2002 and 2003 (a topic they give more attention to in Financial Reckoning Day). As hardcore free-marketeers, Bonner and Wiggin also seem to long for the pre-welfare days of the 1920s but forget how that period’s policies led to the Great Depression. The vehicle needed firing ports to permit the infantrymen inside to fire their weapons. In addition, the vehicle needed an anti-armor weapon system to protect itself against similar enemy infantry combat vehicles, as well as tanks. So the BMP was born.

To what extent do indie masculinities challenge the historical construction of rock music as patriarchal? This key question is addressed by Matthew Bannister, involving an in-depth examination of indie guitar rock in the 1980s as the culturally and historically specific production of white men. Through textual analysis of musical and critical discourses, Bannister provides the first book-length study of masculinity and ethnicity within the context of indie guitar music within US, UK and New Zealand ’scenes’.

Bannister argues that past theorisations of (rock) masculinities have tended to set up varieties of working-class deviance and physical machismo as ’straw men’, oversimplifying masculinities as ‘men behaving badly’. Such approaches disavow the ways that masculine power is articulated in culture not only through representation but also intellectual and theoretical discourse. By re-situating indie in a historical/cultural context of art rock, he shows how masculine power can be rearticulated through high, avant-garde, bohemian culture and aesthetic theory: canonism, negation (Adorno), passivity, voyeurism and camp (Andy Warhol and the Velvet Underground), and primitivism and infantilism (Lester Bangs, Simon Reynolds). In a related vein, he also assesses the impact of Freud on cultural theory, arguing that reversing binary conceptions of gender by associating masculinities with an essentialised passive femininity perpetuates patriarchal dualism. Drawing on his own experience as an indie musician, Bannister surveys a range of indie artists, including the Smiths, the Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and the Go-Betweens; from the US, R.E.M., the Replacements, Dinosaur Jr, Husker Du, Nirvana and hardcore; and from NZ, Flying Nun acts, including the Chills, the Clean, the Verlaines, Chris Knox, Bailter Space, and the Bats, demonstrating broad continuities between these apparently disparate scenes, in terms of gender, aesthetic theory and approaches to popular musical history. The result is a book which raises some important questions about how gender is studied in popular culture and the degree to which alternative cultures can critique dominant representations of gender.

After rejecting an initial series of proposals based on the earlier designs, the General Board received from the Bureau of Construction and Repair three new proposals which more closely met its stated criteria. The characteristics of this new design included a flushdeck hull of about 2050 tons displacement mounting five 5in/38 dual purpose guns, a single 1.1 in A A weapon, and two quintuple 21 in torpedo tubes.
From this initial design, the classic Fletcher class destroyer emerged. Early examples retained the rounded bridge structure of the earlier Benson class. While this arrangement was suitable for ships whose primary mission was torpedo attack, it soon became apparent that it was not suited to the increasing demands placed on the destroyer type to provide anti-aircraft protection for the proposed fast carriers. Accordingly, a new bridge was designed with angular sides and an open bridge completely around the enclosed bridge structure, at once simplifying construction and increasing air defense capabil­ity. At the same time, in order to increase stability and provide for the inevitable increases in topside weight that would come from the demand for additional anti-aircraft weapons and electronics, the foundation for the Mk 37 director was lowered about six feet. The result was the ’square bridge’ Fletcher, the first of which wasBrownson (DD 518). It was to this initial batch of’square bridge’ units that The Sullivans belonged.

David Shahar (1926-1997), author of the seven-novel sequence The Palace of Shattered Vessels, occupies an ambiguous position in the Israeli literary canon. Often compared to Proust, Shahar produced a body of work that offers a fascinating poetic and ideological alternative to the dominant models of Amos Oz and A. B. Yehoshua.

This book, the first full-length study of this fascinating author, takes a fresh look at the uniqueness of his literary achievement in both poetic and ideological terms. In addition to situating Shahar within the European literary tradition, the book reads Shahar’s representation of Jerusalem in his multi-volume novel as a “heterotopia”–an actual space where society’s unconscious (what does not fit on its ideological map) is materially present–and argues for the relevance of Shahar’s work to the critical discussion of the Arab question in Israeli culture.

When the book was first published a leading Russian literary critic of the day — Belinsky — prophesied that Dostoevsky would become a literary giant. It isn’t hard to see how he came to that conclusion, and in hindsight, he was surely was correct.

Throughout the 1500’s improvement was mainly toward lightening the enormous weights of guns and projectiles, as well as finding better ways to move the artillery. Thus, by 1556 Emperor Ferdinand was able to march against the Turks with 57 heavy and 127 light pieces of ordnance. At the beginning of the 1400’s cast-iron balls had made an appearance. The greater efficiency of the iron ball, together with an improvement in gunpowder, further encouraged the building of smaller and stronger guns.

Before 1500 the siege gun had been the predominant piece. Now forged-iron cannon for field, garrison, and naval service–and later, cast-iron pieces–were steadily developed along with cast-bronze guns, some of which were beautifully ornamented with Renaissance workmanship. The casting of trunnions on the gun made elevation and transportation easier, and the cumbrous beds of the early days gave way to crude artillery carriages with trails and wheels. The French invented the limber and about 1550 took a sizable forward step by standardizing the calibers of their artillery.

How should we live? What do we owe to other people? In Goodness and Advice, the eminent philosopher Judith Jarvis Thomson explores how we should go about answering such fundamental questions. In doing so, she makes major advances in moral philosophy, pointing to some deep problems for influential moral theories and describing the structure of a new and much more promising theory.
Thomson begins by lamenting the prevalence of the idea that there is an unbridgeable gap between fact and value–that to say something is good, for example, is not to state a fact, but to do something more like expressing an attitude or feeling.

She sets out to challenge this view, first by assessing the apparently powerful claims of Consequentialism. Thomson makes the striking argument that this familiar theory must ultimately fail because its basic requirement–that people should act to bring about the “most good”–is meaningless. It rests on an incoherent conception of goodness, and supplies, not mistaken advice, but no advice at all.
Thomson then outlines the theory that she thinks we should opt for instead. This theory says that no acts are, simply, good: an act can at most be good in one or another way–as, for example, good for Smith or for Jones. What we ought to do is, most importantly, to avoid injustice; and whether an act is unjust is a function both of the rights of those affected, including the agent, and of how good or bad the act is for them. The book, which originated in the Tanner lectures that Thomson delivered at Princeton University’s Center for Human Values in 1999, includes two chapters by Thomson (”Goodness” and “Advice”), provocative comments by four prominent scholars–Martha Nussbaum, Jerome Schneewind, Philip Fisher, and Barbara Herrnstein Smith–and replies by Thomson to those comments.

Mufti examines the literary dimensions of this crisis of identity through close readings of canonical texts of modern Western–mostly British-literature, as well as major works of modern Indian literature in Urdu and English. He argues that the one characteristic shared by all emerging national cultures since the nineteenth century is the minoritization of some social and cultural fragment of the population, and that national belonging and minority separatism go hand in hand with modernization.
Enlightenment in the Colony calls for the adoption of secular, minority, and exilic perspectives in criticism and intellectual life as a means to critique the very forms of marginalization that give rise to the uniquely powerful minority voice in world literatures.

Not since the 1960s have U.S. politicians, Republican or Democrat, campaigned on platforms defending big government, much less the use of regulation to help solve social ills. And since the late 1970s, “deregulation” has become perhaps the most ubiquitous political catchword of all. This book takes on the critics of government regulation. Providing the first major alternative to conventional arguments grounded in public choice theory, it demonstrates that regulatory government can, and on important occasions does, advance general interests.

Unlike previous accounts, Regulation and Public Interests takes agencies’ decision-making rules rather than legislative incentives as a central determinant of regulatory outcomes. Drawing from both political science and law, Steven Croley argues that such rules, together with agencies’ larger decision-making environments, enhance agency autonomy. Agency personnel inclined to undertake regulatory initiatives that generate large but diffuse benefits (while imposing smaller but more concentrated costs) can use decision-making rules to develop socially beneficial regulations even over the objections of Congress and influential interest groups. This book thus provides a qualified defense of regulatory government. Its illustrative case studies include the development of tobacco rulemaking by the Food and Drug Administration, ozone and particulate matter rules by the Environmental Protection Agency, the Forest Service’s “roadless” policy for national forests, and regulatory initiatives by the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Federal Trade Commission.
