Thyroid Ultrasound and Ultrasound-Guided FNA, Second Edition
Springer | ISBN: 0387776338 | 2008-05-23 | PDF | 250 pages | 11 Mb
Thyroid Ultrasound and Ultrasound-Guided FNA, Second Edition is a “user friendly” book, written specifically for the clinician, and offers a hands-on approach to using ultrasound in the evaluation and management of thyroid disease. It discusses new information regarding ultrasound and the subtleties one needs to know in the application of this technique.

By using scores of ultrasound images, it demonstrates how ultrasound is integrated with the history, physical exam, and other thyroid tests (especially FNA biopsy) to provide information that improves patient care. The book also presents many new innovative uses of ultrasound that are being implemented worldwide. It continues to be an important book, filling a void that exists in this field. Spanish Army of the Napoleonic Wars (3): 1812-15 (Men-at-arms 334) By Rene Chartrand
Publisher: Os Publishing 1999 | Pages 48 | ISBN: 1855327643 | PDF | 19 MB

This volume – covering the final years of the Peninsular War and the long trek over the Pyrenees into France – concludes the author’s remarkable in-depth study of the army that fought alongside Wellington’s redcoats throughout the Peninsular War.

Prior to 1813 it was the Spanish armies that bore the brunt of the fighting and this text – based on primary research in Spanish and British archives which will be new to most readers – fills a large and long-standing gap in our knowledge of those Napoleonic campaigns which have always fascinated English-speaking students of the period.

Shattered Vessels: Memory, Identity, and Creation in the Work of David Shahar (Suny Series in Modern Jewish Literature and Culture)
Publisher: State University of New York Press | ISBN: 0791459195 | edition 2004 | PDF | 224 pages | 1 mb
The first book-length study of the Israeli novelist David Shahar. David Shahar (1926-1997), author of the seven-novel sequence The Palace of Shattered Vessels, occupies an ambiguous position in the Israeli literary canon. Often compared to Proust, Shahar produced a body of work that offers a fascinating poetic and ideological alternative to the dominant models of Amos Oz and A. B. Yehoshua.

This book, the first full-length study of this fascinating author, takes a fresh look at the uniqueness of his literary achievement in both poetic and ideological terms. In addition to situating Shahar within the European literary tradition, the book reads Shahar’s representation of Jerusalem in his multi-volume novel as a “heterotopia”–an actual space where society’s unconscious (what does not fit on its ideological map) is materially present–and argues for the relevance of Shahar’s work to the critical discussion of the Arab question in Israeli culture.

Designing Visual Interfaces: Communication Oriented Techniques By Kevin Mullet, Darrell Sano
Publisher: Prentice Hall 1995 | 304 Pages | ISBN: 0133033899 | PDF | 48 MB

An excellent introduction to the design theories involved in the creation of user interfaces. Instead of the usual examples and pictures of computer screens and application menus, Mullet approaches the concept of UI from its “outside world” roots. With examples ranging from street signs to corporate logos to the map of the London Underground, each section attacks the issues of interface design from the ground up, appealing first to the eye and then to the mind.

Task menus are compared with concert programs and street signs are equated with icons.

This is not a technical book, so advanced developers might want to supplement it with a platform-specific how-to. For aesthetic advice and sheer enjoyment, anyone involved with or interested in interface design should pick it up.

The Construction and Representation of Race and Ethnicity in the Caribbean and the World By Mervyn C. Alleyne
Publisher: University of the West Indies Press | ISBN: 9766401144 | edition 2002 | PDF | 400 pages | 4,4 mb
The definition and evolution of the categories of race and ethnicity have long been debated among historians and scholars of social anthropology. This book examines how the meanings and values of race and ethnicity have been constructed historically and how they are represented symbolically, with particular focus on the Caribbean Mervyn Alleyne examines the historical development of these categories in Europe, in Asia and in Africa and then proceeds to an in-depth analysis of the Caribbean, with a focus on Puerto Rico, Martinique and Jamaica as three different modalities of race and ethnicity and three different colonial systems.

Through a unique approach grounded in linguistic, ethnographic and historic analysis, Alleyne draws on a wide array of evidence to ultimately oppose the widely held notion that racial antagonism against black people is the consequence of New World slavery in the period following the “discovery” of the Americas in the late fifteenth century. Of particular interest to academic audiences in history, linguistics, African American and ethnic studies, sociology and anthropology, this book also appeals to general readers interested in issues of race, ethnicity, and the historical experience of Africans and African-descended peoples.

Fyodor Dostoevsky: “Poor Folk and Other Stories”
Publisher: Penguin | ISBN: n/a | edition: 1988 | PDF | 102 Pages | 1 Mb

Poor Folk is an epistolary novel — that is, a tale told as a series of letters between the characters. And oh, what characters these are! Makar Dievushkin Alexievitch is a copy writer, barely squeaking by; Barbara Dobroselova Alexievna works as a seamstress, and both face the sort of everyday humiliation society puts upon the poor. These are people respected by no one, not even by themselves.

These are folks too poor, in their circumstances, to marry; the love between them is a chaste and proper thing, a love that brings some readers to tears. But it isn’t maudlin, either; Fyodor Dostoevsky has something profound to say about these people and this circumstance. And he says it very well. When the book was first published a leading Russian literary critic of the day — Belinsky — prophesied that Dostoevsky would become a literary giant. It isn’t hard to see how he came to that conclusion, and in hindsight, he was surely was correct.

Peter O’Donnell, “Introduction to 2-Spinors in General Relativity”
World Scientific Publishing Company 2003 | ISBN:9812383077 | 204 pages | Djvu | 1,5 MB

This book deals with 2-spinors in general relativity, beginning by developing spinors in a geometrical way rather than using representation theory, which can be a little abstract. This gives the reader greater physical intuition into the way in which spinors behave. The book concentrates on the algebra and calculus of spinors connected with curved space-time.

Many of the well-known tensor fields in general relativity are shown to have spinor counterparts. An analysis of the Lanczos spinor concludes the book, and some of the techniques so far encountered are applied to this. Exercises play an important role throughout and are given at the end of each chapter.

Albert Manucy, “Artillery Through the Ages.”
Publisher: BiblioBazaar | ISBN: 1434697851 | 2008 edition | PDF | 52 Pages | 1.49 MB

Throughout the 1500’s improvement was mainly toward lightening the enormous weights of guns and projectiles, as well as finding better ways to move the artillery. Thus, by 1556 Emperor Ferdinand was able to march against the Turks with 57 heavy and 127 light pieces of ordnance. At the beginning of the 1400’s cast-iron balls had made an appearance. The greater efficiency of the iron ball, together with an improvement in gunpowder, further encouraged the building of smaller and stronger guns.

Before 1500 the siege gun had been the predominant piece. Now forged-iron cannon for field, garrison, and naval service–and later, cast-iron pieces–were steadily developed along with cast-bronze guns, some of which were beautifully ornamented with Renaissance workmanship. The casting of trunnions on the gun made elevation and transportation easier, and the cumbrous beds of the early days gave way to crude artillery carriages with trails and wheels. The French invented the limber and about 1550 took a sizable forward step by standardizing the calibers of their artillery.

Grace M. Ledbetter, “Poetics before Plato: Interpretation and Authority in Early Greek Theories of Poetry”
Publisher: Princeton University Press | ISBN: 0691096090 | edition: 2002 | PDF | 144 Pages | 1,4 Mb

Combining literary and philosophical analysis, this study defends an utterly innovative reading of the early history of poetics. It is the first to argue that there is a distinctively Socratic view of poetry and the first to connect the Socratic view of poetry with earlier literary tradition.
Literary theory is usually said to begin with Plato’s famous critique of poetry in the Republic.

Grace Ledbetter challenges this entrenched assumption by arguing that Plato’s earlier dialogues Ion, Protagoras, and Apology introduce a distinctively Socratic theory of poetry that responds polemically to traditional poets as rival theorists. Ledbetter tracks the sources of this Socratic response by introducing separate readings of the poetics implicit in the poetry of Homer, Hesiod, and Pindar. Examining these poets’ theories from a new angle that uncovers their literary, rhetorical, and political aims, she demonstrates their decisive influence on Socratic thinking about poetry.
The Socratic poetics Ledbetter elucidates focuses not on censorship, but on the interpretation of poetry as a source of moral wisdom. This philosophical approach to interpreting poetry stands at odds with the poets’ own theories–and with the Sophists’ treatment of poetry. Unlike the Republic’s focus on exposing and banishing poetry’s irrational and unavoidably corrupting influence, Socrates’ theory includes poetry as subject matter for philosophical inquiry within an examined life.
Reaching back into what has too long been considered literary theory’s prehistory, Ledbetter advances arguments that will redefine how classicists, philosophers, and literary theorists think about Plato’s poetics.

Medical Imaging has become one of the most important visualization and interpretation methods in biology and medecine over the past decade. This time has witnessed a tremendous development of new, powerful instruments for detecting, storing, transmitting, analyzing, and displaying medical images. This has led to a huge growth in the application of digital processing techniques for solving medical problems.

The most challenging aspect of medical imaging lies in the development of integrated systems for the use of the clinical sector. Design, implementation, and validation of complex medical systems requires a tight interdisciplinary collaboration between physicians and engineers because poor image quality leads to problematic feature extraction, analysis, and recognition in medical application. Therefore, much of the research done today is geared towards improvement of imperfect image material.
This important book by academic authority Anke Meyer-Baese compiles and organizes a complete range of proven and cutting-edge new methods, which are playing a leading role in the improvement of image quality, analysis and interpretation in modern medical imaging. These methods offer fresh tools of hope for physicians investigating a vast number of medical problems for which classical methods prove insufficient.
Each chapter in Pattern Recognition for Medical Imaging provides a chapter summary and bibliographic remarks for in-depth study. Each presented classification approach is elucidated by a flow-diagram and highlighted with practical medical imaging applications. This is an essential tool for the serious student and professional working with Medical Imaging.

Group B Coxsackieviruses (Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology)
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 3540755454 | edition 2008 | PDF | 342 pages | 3,76 mb

Our knowledge of the group B coxsackieviruses has progressed dramatically in the past 60 years. Some of the most recent advances include the identification of the coxsackievirus-adenovirus receptor, the dissection of genetic elements linked to virulence/attenuation, examination of the impact of recombination in virus evolution and diversity, and analysis of the role of viral proteins in regulating host cell macromolecule synthesis and trafficking.

The First Edition of this work, published in 1997, described the molecular biology of coxsackie B viruses, as well as clinical, epidemiological, and immunological aspects of group B coxsackievirus disease. Much has been accomplished in the past ten years, including determination of the crystal structure of a virus-receptor complex, significant advances in understanding the molecular details of virus-host interaction within the cell, and deeper insights into the systemic effects of virus infection and the host response. This Second Edition summarizes the current state of knowledge in group B coxsackievirus genomics and replication, receptor structure and function, host cell interactions, the host immune response and immunopathology, viral virulence and pathogenesis, and the role of this important group of viruses in acute and chronic disease in humans.

Judith Jarvis Thomson, “Goodness and Advice (The University Center for Human Values Series)”
Publisher: Princeton University Press | ISBN: 0691086737 | edition: 2001 | PDF | 208 Pages | 1,3 Mb

How should we live? What do we owe to other people? In Goodness and Advice, the eminent philosopher Judith Jarvis Thomson explores how we should go about answering such fundamental questions. In doing so, she makes major advances in moral philosophy, pointing to some deep problems for influential moral theories and describing the structure of a new and much more promising theory.
Thomson begins by lamenting the prevalence of the idea that there is an unbridgeable gap between fact and value–that to say something is good, for example, is not to state a fact, but to do something more like expressing an attitude or feeling.

She sets out to challenge this view, first by assessing the apparently powerful claims of Consequentialism. Thomson makes the striking argument that this familiar theory must ultimately fail because its basic requirement–that people should act to bring about the “most good”–is meaningless. It rests on an incoherent conception of goodness, and supplies, not mistaken advice, but no advice at all.
Thomson then outlines the theory that she thinks we should opt for instead. This theory says that no acts are, simply, good: an act can at most be good in one or another way–as, for example, good for Smith or for Jones. What we ought to do is, most importantly, to avoid injustice; and whether an act is unjust is a function both of the rights of those affected, including the agent, and of how good or bad the act is for them. The book, which originated in the Tanner lectures that Thomson delivered at Princeton University’s Center for Human Values in 1999, includes two chapters by Thomson (”Goodness” and “Advice”), provocative comments by four prominent scholars–Martha Nussbaum, Jerome Schneewind, Philip Fisher, and Barbara Herrnstein Smith–and replies by Thomson to those comments.

Aamir R. Mufti, “Enlightenment in the Colony: The Jewish Question and the Crisis of Postcolonial Culture”
Publisher: Princeton University Press | ISBN: 0691057311 | edition: 2007 | PDF | 344 Pages | 1,4 Mb

Enlightenment in the Colony opens up the history of the “Jewish question” for the first time to a broader discussion–one of the social exclusion of religious and cultural minorities in modern times, and in particular the crisis of Muslim identity in modern India.
Aamir Mufti identifies the Hindu-Muslim conflict in India as a colonial variation of what he calls “the exemplary crisis of minority”–Jewishness in Europe.

He shows how the emergence of this conflict in the late nineteenth century represented an early instance of the reinscription of the “Jewish question” in a non-Western society undergoing modernization under colonial rule. In so doing, he charts one particular route by which this European phenomenon linked to nation-states takes on a global significance.
Mufti examines the literary dimensions of this crisis of identity through close readings of canonical texts of modern Western–mostly British-literature, as well as major works of modern Indian literature in Urdu and English. He argues that the one characteristic shared by all emerging national cultures since the nineteenth century is the minoritization of some social and cultural fragment of the population, and that national belonging and minority separatism go hand in hand with modernization.
Enlightenment in the Colony calls for the adoption of secular, minority, and exilic perspectives in criticism and intellectual life as a means to critique the very forms of marginalization that give rise to the uniquely powerful minority voice in world literatures.

Steven P. Croley, “Regulation and Public Interests: The Possibility of Good Regulatory Government”
Publisher: Princeton University Press | ISBN: 069113085X | edition: 2007 | PDF | 392 Pages | 1,5 Mb

Not since the 1960s have U.S. politicians, Republican or Democrat, campaigned on platforms defending big government, much less the use of regulation to help solve social ills. And since the late 1970s, “deregulation” has become perhaps the most ubiquitous political catchword of all. This book takes on the critics of government regulation. Providing the first major alternative to conventional arguments grounded in public choice theory, it demonstrates that regulatory government can, and on important occasions does, advance general interests.

Unlike previous accounts, Regulation and Public Interests takes agencies’ decision-making rules rather than legislative incentives as a central determinant of regulatory outcomes. Drawing from both political science and law, Steven Croley argues that such rules, together with agencies’ larger decision-making environments, enhance agency autonomy. Agency personnel inclined to undertake regulatory initiatives that generate large but diffuse benefits (while imposing smaller but more concentrated costs) can use decision-making rules to develop socially beneficial regulations even over the objections of Congress and influential interest groups. This book thus provides a qualified defense of regulatory government. Its illustrative case studies include the development of tobacco rulemaking by the Food and Drug Administration, ozone and particulate matter rules by the Environmental Protection Agency, the Forest Service’s “roadless” policy for national forests, and regulatory initiatives by the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Federal Trade Commission.

The Roman Army of the Principate 27 BC-AD 117 (Battle Orders 37) By Nic Fields
Publisher: Os Publishing 2009 | Pages 96 | ISBN: 1846033861 | PDF | 36 MB

The Imperial Army established by Augustus drew heavily on the nomenclature and traditions of the late Roman Republic, but was revolutionary in its design. He decided to meet all the military needs of the Empire from a standing, professional army. Military service became a career: enlistment was for 25 years (16 in the Praetorian Guard), and men were sometimes retained even longer.

The loyalty of the new army was to the emperor and not to either the Senate or the People of Rome. Imperial legions became permanent units with their own numbers and titles and many were to remain in existence for centuries to come.

Space Time Play: Computer Games, Architecture and Urbanism: the Next Level
By Friedrich von Borries, Steffen P. Walz, Matthias Böttger, Drew Davidson, Heather Kelley, Julian Kücklich
Publisher: Birkhäuser Basel | ISBN: 376438414X | edition 2007 | PDF | 495 pages | 10 mb

Computer and video games are leaving the PC and conquering the arena of everyday life in the form of mobile applications (such as GPS cell phones, etc.) – the result is new types of cities and architecture. How do these games alter our perception of real and virtual space?

What can the designers of physical and digital worlds learn from one another? Space Time Play presents the following themes: the superimposition of computer games on real spaces and convergences of real and imaginary playspaces; computer and video games as practical planning instruments.
