William Bonner, Addison Wiggin, “Empire of Debt: The Rise of an Epic Financial Crisis”
Wiley | 2005 | ISBN: 0471739022 | 384 pages | PDF | 1,8 MB
In Empire of Debt, maverick financial writers Bill Bonner and Addison Wiggin provide you with the first in-depth look at how the American character has shifted to accommodate its new imperial role; how we have abandoned the private virtues of personal liberty, economic freedom, and fiscal restraint; and how the government has gained control of public life and the economy.
Amazon.com Review
Many Americans have resisted the notion that their country is an imperial power. The idea seems to contradict the values of the Republic and its Founding Fathers. But in Empire of Debt, prominent financial analysts Bill Bonner and Addison Wiggin argue passionately that not only is the United States an empire, but it is also one whose end is coming soon. Bonner and Wiggin are the brains behind www.dailyreckoning.com, an iconoclastic and irreverent market advisory service that has long raised concerns about American indebtedness and warned of a looming dollar crisis. In Empire of Debt, a sequel to their earlier doom-and-gloom book Financial Reckoning Day, they elaborate on their argument that the U.S. economy is about to implode.
Bonner and Wiggin enumerate a long list of chronic ailments that imperil the American financial system–a massive trade deficit, soaring personal and government debt, a housing bubble, runaway military expenditures. These problems “hardly disturb the sleep of the imperial race,” the authors write. “[But] all empires must pass away.” Bonner and Wiggin argue that American imperial delusions are similar to the fantasies that fueled the dot-com market mania. They recommend readers buy gold as insurance in the event of a financial crisis. Empire of Debt flounders when discussing how America indebted itself; the authors blame the Federal Reserve Board’s low interest rates but gloss over the fact that rates were slashed because the U.S. teetered on the brink of deflation in 2002 and 2003 (a topic they give more attention to in Financial Reckoning Day). As hardcore free-marketeers, Bonner and Wiggin also seem to long for the pre-welfare days of the 1920s but forget how that period’s policies led to the Great Depression. That said, Empire of Debt contains many revelations that will open eyes. –Alex Roslin

Glyn Williams, Paula Meth, Katie Willis “New Geographies of the Global South: Developing Areas in a Changing World”
Routledge | English | 2009-03-17 | ISBN: 0415381223 | 464 pages | PDF | 17,2 MB
Rather than presenting the global South to students as a set of problems (rapid urbanisation, population growth, poverty etc), this textbook focuses on the diversity of life in the South, and looks at the role it plays in shaping and responding to current global change.
The text integrates ‘traditional’ concerns of development geographers (such as economic development and social inequality) with aspects of the global South usually given less attention (such as cultural identity and political conflict).
Divided into four main sections: Representing the global South argues that images of the so called ‘Third World’ are powerful but also problematic; The South in a Global World then turns to the economic, political and cultural processes shaping the south at a global scale; Living in the South looks at the impact these have on peoples lives and identities; and the final section, Making a Difference?, looks at the possibilities and limitations of development. Throughout, the main arguments of the book are illustrated through case study material drawn from across the developing world.
The global South is not only introduced to students via contemporary debates in development, but also through current research in social, cultural and political geographies of developing areas. Students are supported throughout with clear examples, explanations of key terms, ideas and debates, and introductions to the wider literature in this field. Thought-provoking and accessible, it presents a fresh view of the global South that will challenge students’ preconceptions and promote lively debate.

Sue Arrowsmith, Peter Kunzlik “Social and Environmental Policies in EC Procurement Law: New Directives and New Directions”
Cambridge University Press | English | 2009-03-02 | ISBN: 0521881501 | 550 pages | PDF | 2,8 MB
In developing public procurement policy, governments are often concerned not only with value for money but also with promoting their social and environmental objectives. However, imposing social and environmental requirements makes it harder for some suppliers to participate in public procurement. EC law thus limits the ability of national governments to implement such policies. But how should the balance be struck between these trade concerns and the desire of national governments to use procurement as a policy tool?
And should the EC even harness Member States’ procurement power to EC-wide objectives, such as green energy policy? Despite the new provisions included in the EC’s new (2004) procurement directives, important issues remain unresolved. This volume focusses on new issues in the field, notably the innovative provisions in the new directives, new academic thinking and areas neglected in the debate, such as the impact of EC law on the CSR policies of private utilities.

The Innovator’s Dilemma: When New Technologies Cause Great Firms to Fail (Management of Innovation and Change Series) by Clayton M. Christensen (Author)
Publisher: Harvard Business School Press (June 1997) | ISBN-10: 0875845851 | PDF | 2 Mb | 225 pages
What do the Honda Supercub, Intel’s 8088 processor, and hydraulic excavators have in common? They are all examples of disruptive technologies that helped to redefine the competitive landscape of their respective markets. These products did not come about as the result of successful companies carrying out sound business practices in established markets.
In The Innovator’s Dilemma, author Clayton M. Christensen shows how these and other products cut into the low end of the marketplace and eventually evolved to displace high-end competitors and their reigning technologies.
At the heart of The Innovator’s Dilemma is how a successful company with established products keeps from being pushed aside by newer, cheaper products that will, over time, get better and become a serious threat. Christensen writes that even the best-managed companies, in spite of their attention to customers and continual investment in new technology, are susceptible to failure no matter what the industry, be it hard drives or consumer retailing. Succinct and clearly written, The Innovator’s Dilemma is an important book that belongs on every manager’s bookshelf. Highly recommended.

German Army, 1939-45 (2): North Africa & Balkans (Men-at-arms 316) By Nigel Thomas
Publisher: Os Publishing 1998 | Pages 56 | ISBN: 185532640X | PDF | 34 MB
Hitler first considered an invasion of Great Britain in autumn 1940, then scheduled Operation Barbarossa, the conquest of the European part of the Soviet Union, for May 1941. Anxious to emulate Hitler’s successes, the Italian dictator Mussolini embarked upon unnecessary military adventures in North Africa and the Balkans, which forced Hitler’s intervention, diverting and depleting precious German resources, and a six-week postponement of Barbarossa.
In this second of four volumes [Men-at-Arms 311, 316, 326 & 330] on the German Army of the Second World War, Nigel Thomas examines the uniforms and insignia of the forces involved in North Africa and the Balkans.

BMP Infantry Combat Vehicle By Steven J. Zaloga
Publisher: Concord Publications 1990 | Pages 60 | ISBN: 9623610068 | PDF | 38 MB
The Soviet BMP was the world’s first major infantry combat vehicle. Previous mechanized infantry vehicles, usually called APC (armored personnel carrier), were designed merely to transport infantry to the battlefield. In contrast, the BMP was designed to permit the infantry to fight from the vehicle. The requirement for such a vehicle stemmed from changes in Soviet operational doctrine in the late 1950s.
The Soviets began examining how an army would fight on a battlefield where tactical nuclear weapons were being used. It became obvious that foor soldiers could not survive in radioactively contaminated areas where a nuclear weapon had been detonated. Armored vehicles were the obvious solution since the steel of the hull protected the crew from most residual radioactivity, and the air could be filtered to remove contaminated dust. The vehicle needed firing ports to permit the infantrymen inside to fire their weapons. In addition, the vehicle needed an anti-armor weapon system to protect itself against similar enemy infantry combat vehicles, as well as tanks. So the BMP was born.

Émigré and Foreign Troops in British Service (1) 1792-1803 (Men-at-arms 328) By Rene Chartrand
Publisher: Os Publishing 1999 | Pages 48 | ISBN: 185532766X | PDF | 13 MB
Following the Revolution in 1789, members of the aristocracy were increasingly persecuted, and many of them fled abroad. These exiles became known collectively as ‘émigrés’, and despite initial confusions and indecision, many of them were taken into British service. This fine text by René Chartrand examines the organisation, uniforms and insignia of the Émigré troops in British service from 1793 to 1802, accompanied by plenty of illustrations including eight full page colour plates by Patrice Courcelle.
The French Revolution was resisted by many of the aristocracy in an attempt to restore the King. The forces raised by these exiled officers fought alongside the British Army on battlefields from Holland to the West Indies and are covered in detail in this volume, including weapons and uniforms.

The Global Political Economy of Israel
Pluto Press | ISBN: 0745316751 | 2002-09-01 | PDF | 407 pages | 2 Mb
Over the past century, Israel has been transformed from an agricultural colony, to a welfare-warfare state, to a globally integrated “market economy” characterized by great income disparities. What lies behind this transformation? Why the shift in emphasis from “war profits” to “peace dividends” - and back to conflict? How did egalitarianism give rise to inequality? Who are the big winners here, and how have they shaped their world?
Never before have these questions been answered as they are in this highly original book. In order to understand capitalist development, argue Bichler and Nitzan, we need to break the artificial separation between “economics” and “politics”, and think of accumulation itself as “capitalization of power”. Applying this concept to Israel, and drawing on seemingly unrelated phenomena, the authors reveal the big picture that never makes it to the news. Diverse processes - such as global accumulation cycles, regional conflicts and energy crises, ruling class formation and dominant ideology, militarism and dependency, inflation and recession, the politics of high-technology and the transnationalization of ownership - are all woven into a single story. The result is a fascinating account of one of the world’s most volatile regions, and a new way of understanding the global political economy.

Eat to Live: The Revolutionary Formula for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss
Little, Brown and Company | ISBN: 0316735507 | 2005-01-04 | PDF | 304 pages | 4 Mb
When Mehmet Oz or any of New York’s leading doctors has a patient whose life depends on losing weight, they call on Joel Fuhrman, M.D. In EAT TO LIVE, Dr. Fuhrman offers his healthy, effective, and scientifically proven plan for shedding radical amounts of weight quickly, and keeping it off.Losing weight under Dr. Fuhrman’s plan is not about willpower, it is about knowledge.
The key to this revolutionary diet is the idea of nutrient density, as expressed by the simple formula Health=Nutrients/Calories. When the ratio of nutrients to calories is high, fat melts away and health is restored. Losing 20 pounds in two to three weeks is just the beginning. The more high-nutrient food Dr. Fuhrman’s patients consume, the more they are satisfied with fewer calories, and the less they crave fat and high-calorie foods. Designed for people who must lose 50 pounds or more in a hurry, EAT TO LIVE works for every dieter, even those who want to lose as little as 10 pounds quickly. No willpower required-just knowledge!

Ecological Paradigms Lost: Routes of Theory Change (Theoretical Ecology Series)
Academic Press | ISBN: 0120884593 | 2005-07-27 | PDF | 464 pages | 23 Mb
This edited volume in the Theoretical Ecology series addresses the historical development and evolution of theoretical ideas in the field of ecology. Not only does it recount the history of the discipline by practitioners of the science of ecology, it includes commentary on these historical reflections by philosophers of science.
Even though the theories discussed are, in many cases, are at the forefront of research, the language and approach make this material accessible to non-theoreticians. The book is structured in 5 major sections including population ecology, epidemiology, community ecology, evolutionary biology and ecosystem ecology. In each section a chapter by an eminent, experienced ecologist is complemented by analysis from a newer, cutting-edge researcher.
* Reflection on the past and future of ecology
* A historical overview of major ideas in the field of ecology
* Pairing of historical views by ecologists along with a philosophical commentary directed at the practicing scientists` views by a philosopher of science.
* Historical analysis by practicing ecologists including anectodal experiences that are rarely recorded.
* Based on a very popular symposium at the 2002 Ecological Society of America annual meeting in Tucson, AZ.

Beyond VoIP Protocols: Understanding Voice Technology and Networking Techniques for IP Telephony
Wiley | ISBN: 0470023627 | March 11, 2005 | 284 pages | PDF | 5 MB
In 1999-2000, VoIP (Voice-over-IP) telephony was one of the most successful buzzwords of the telecom bubble era. However, in 2001-2003, VoIP faced a very tough reality check. Now, manufacturers and service providers are drawing on what they have learnt from past experience in order to prepare to participate in the next major challenge faced by the telecommunications industry.
This book offers a comprehensive overview of the issues to solve in order to deploy global revenue-generating effective “multimedia” services. Drawing on extensive research and practical deployment experience in VoIP, the authors provide essential advice for those seeking to design and implement a post-bubble VoIP network.
Beyond VoIP Protocols: Understanding Voice Technology and Networking Techniques for IP Telephony
* Introduces the basics of speech coding and voice quality
* Demonstrates how quality of service may be built into the network and deals with dimensioning aspects, e.g. multipoint communications and how to model call seizures.
* Explores the potential of multicast to turn an IP backbone into an optimized broadcast medium
* Includes amply illustrated, state-of-the-art practical advice for formulating a complete deployment strategy
A companion volume to “IP Telephony: Deploying VoIP Protocols”, this book takes the reader a stage deeper into how to prepare the network and exploit VoIP technology to its full potential.
