How to Solve the Mind-Body Problem (Journal of Consciousness Studies)
Publisher: Imprint Academic | ISBN: 0907845088 | edition 2000 | PDF | 112 pages | 5,93 mb
How does the water of the brain yield the wine of conscious experience? What is the link between bodily activity and our inner feeling of what its like to be ourselves? In this highly readable yet scholarly essay Nicholas Humphrey takes a fresh look at the so called hard problem of consciousness and, in the light of evolutionary history, proposes a radically new solution.
His controversial ideas are discussed and challenged by leading figures in the philosophy of mind, including Andy Clark, Daniel Dennett, Naomi Eilan, Ralph Ellis, Valerie Gray Hardcastle, Stevan Harnad, Natika Newton, Christian de Quincey, Carol Rovane and Robert van Gulick. This book is an excellent short introduction to the on-going debate about the nature of consciousness.

James Stewart, “Calculus, 5 Ed”
Brooks Cole | 2002 | ISBN: 053439339X | 1368 pages | PDF | 17,9 MB
Stewart’s CALCULUS, Fifth Edition has the mathematical precision, accuracy, clarity of exposition and outstanding examples and problem sets that have characterized the first four editions. Stewart retains the focus on problem solving and the pedagogical system that has made the book a favorite of students and instructors in a wide variety of colleges and universities throughout the world.
In this Fifth Edition, he has made hundreds of small improvements: new examples, additional steps in existing examples, updating of data in existing examples and exercises, new phrases and margin notes to clarify the exposition, references to other sources and web sites, redrawn art, and references to the TEC CD (Tools for Enriching Calculus). These refinements ensure that students and instructors have the best materials available. The number of pages in the book, however, remains unchanged from the 4th edition. Further support for students and instructors is now available through a vast array of supplementary material.

Ethernet Networking for the Small Office and Professional Home Office
Morgan Kaufmann | ISBN:0123737443 | 352 pages | June 8, 2007 | PDF | 26 Mb
In a local area network (LAN) or intranet, there are many pieces of hardare trying to gain access to the network transmission media at the same time (i.e., phone lines, coax, wireless, etc.). However, a network cable or wireless transmission frequency can physically only allow one node to use it at a given time. Therefore, there must be some way to regulate which node has control of the medium (a media access control, or MAC, protocol).
Ethernet is a MAC protocol; it is one way to regulate physical access to network tranmission media. Ethernet networking is used primarily by networks that are contained within a single physical location. If you need to design, install, and manage a network in such an envronment, i.e., home or small business office, then this book will give you an in-depth understanding of the technology involved in an Ethernet network.
One of the major goals of this book is to demystify the jargon of networks so that the reader gains a working familiarity with common networking terminology and acronyms.
In addition, this books explains not only how to choose and configure network hardware but also provides practical information about the types of network devices and software needed to make it all work. Tips and direction on how to manage an Ethernet network are also provided.
This book therefore goes beyond the hardware aspects of Ethernet to look at the entire network from bottom to top, along with enough technical detail to enable the reader to make intelligent choices about what types of transmission media are used and the way in which the various parts of the network are interconnected.
*Explains how the Ethernet works, with emphasis on current technologies and emerging trends in gigabit and fast Ethernet, WiFi, routers, and security issues
*Teaches how to design and select complementary components of Ethernet networks with a focus on home and small business applications
*Discuses the various types of cables, software, and hardware involved in constructing, connecting, operating and monitoring Ethernet networks

Analysis, Geometry, and Modeling in Finance: Advanced Methods in Option Pricing
Chapman & Hall/CRC | 2008-09-22 | ISBN: 1420086995 | 400 pages | PDF | 2,2 MB
Analysis, Geometry, and Modeling in Finance: Advanced Methods in Option Pricing is the first book that applies advanced analytical and geometrical methods used in physics and mathematics to the financial field. It even obtains new results when only approximate and partial solutions were previously available.
Through the problem of option pricing, the author introduces powerful tools and methods, including differential geometry, spectral decomposition, and supersymmetry, and applies these methods to practical problems in finance. He mainly focuses on the calibration and dynamics of implied volatility, which is commonly called smile. The book covers the Black–Scholes, local volatility, and stochastic volatility models, along with the Kolmogorov, Schrödinger, and Bellman–Hamilton–Jacobi equations.
Providing both theoretical and numerical results throughout, this book offers new ways of solving financial problems using techniques found in physics and mathematics.

My Daddy Was a Soldier: A World War II Story
Publisher: Holiday House | ISBN: 0823407950 | edition 1990 | PDF | 40 pages | 3,69 mb
A quiet story of reminiscence in which a young Philadelphia girl recalls the years during World War II. Her father leaves home in 1943 to serve in the army, and his letters from training camp and the Pacific mark the passage of time for Jeannie and her mother. During his absence, they experience the war on the home front: the mother works as a welder, and Jeannie helps her class collect scrap metal. Food shortages, victory gardens, blackouts, and gas rationing fill their lives as they share their fears for her father’s safety.
The book ends with a joyful reunion of the family in the train station following V-J Day. Soft, full-page black-and-white pencil drawings enrich a text filled with descriptions and warm, affectionate dialogue. The book accurately conveys what it was like to be a child in that time of private anxiety and community spirit. Although few children are spontaneously drawn to memoirs, Ray’s story, read aloud or discussed, is full of potential for learning and sharing.

Night of the Moonjellies
Publisher: Purple House Press | ISBN: 1930900341 | edition 2007 | PDF | 32 pages | 2,45 mb
This beautifully illustrated picture book debut evokes the fullness of a New England childhood through descriptions of a single summer day. Seven-year-old Mark is helping at his grandmother’s seaside hot dog stand, purveyor of “the best lobster rolls in New England.” He finds “something that felt like jelly” on the beach, but further investigation is postponed by the hubbub at the stand: “Fries crackled.
Cheeseburgers sizzled. ‘More rolls!’ called Uncle Al. ‘Rushing through!’ Gram said, carrying a kettle of clam chowder up front. ‘Low on straws!’ Rollie shouted. I hurried to fill the box.” When the busy day ends, Gram and Mark take a boat out to sea, where Mark sees an oceanful of shimmering white lights–moonjellies–and returns his to the water. The text offers a wide range of tones, from soothing to stimulating, but the book’s greatest strength lies in its artwork. Shimmering blues and greens suggest the iridescence of the tranquil night sea; vibrant reds and oranges capture the harried humans. A strongly atmospheric work.
