Alexander Pushkin, “The Little Tragedies”
Yale University Press | 2000-04-10 | ISBN: 0300080255 | 246 pages | PDF | 1,5 MB

In a major burst of creativity, Russian poet Alexander Pushkin during just three months in 1830 completed Eugene Onegin, composed more than thirty lyric poems, wrote several short stories and folk tales, and penned the four short dramas in verse that comprise the “little tragedies”. The “little tragedies” stand among the great masterpieces of Russian literature, yet they were last translated into English a quarter of a century ago and have in recent years been out of print entirely. In this outstanding new translation, Nancy K.
Anderson preserves the cadence and intensity of Pushkin’s work while aligning it with today’s poetic practices and freer approach to metrics. In addition, she provides critical essays examining each play in depth, a discussion of her approach to translating the plays, and a consideration of the genre of these dramatic pieces and their performability. The four “little tragedies” - Mozart and Salieri, The Miserly Knight, The Stone Guest, and A Feast During the Plague - are extremely compressed dialogues, each dealing with a dominant protagonist whose central internal conflict determines both the plot and structure of the play. Pushkin focuses on human passions and the interplay between free will and fate: though each protagonist could avoid self-ruin, instead he freely chooses it. Enjoy this great book! Sextus Empiricus, “Sextus Empiricus: Outlines of Scepticism (Cambridge Texts in the History of Philosophy)”
Cambridge University Press | 2000 | ISBN: 0521778093, 0521771390 | 286 pages | PDF | 8,2 MB

Outlines of Scepticism, by the Greek philosopher Sextus Empiricus, is a work of major importance for the history of Greek philosophy. It is the fullest extant account of ancient skepticism, and it is also one of our most copious sources of information about the other Hellenistic philosophies. Its argumentative approach revolutionized the study of philosophy when Sextus’ works were rediscovered in the sixteenth century.

This volume presents the accurate and readable translation that was first published in 1994, together with a substantial new historical and philosophical introduction by Jonathan Barnes.

Theoretical and Quantum Mechanics: Fundamentals for Chemists
Springer | ISBN: 1402033656 | 1 edition (December 1, 2005) | 513 pages | PDF | 6 Mb

Theoretical and Quantum Mechanics: Fundamentals provides an introduction to theoretical and quantum mechanics for chemists. The book includes carefully selected quantum mechanics topics of the most fundamental interest and use for chemists and classical mechanics topics that relate and illuminate these. A comprehensive treatment is given wherever possible.

The book acquaints the chemists with the quantum structure of the basic object of chemistry – the atom – and the author bridges the gap between classical physics, general and inorganic chemistry, and quantum mechanics.

The book provides the basics of theoretical and quantum mechanics in one place and emphasizes the continuity between them. Key topics include:
- applications of quantum methods to simple systems, e.g. one-dimensional potential, harmonic oscillator, hydrogen atom, hydrogen-like atoms
- introduction of representation theory and elements of matrix mechanics
- development of the perturbation theory
- physical explanation of the interaction of an electron with magnetic field
- generalization to many-particles systems.

Each chapter includes a detailed outline, a summary, self-assessment questions for which answers are in the text, a varied set of problems. In addition, the book contains many summary tables to ensure clarity of the subject.

C. N. Manlove, “From Alice to Harry Potter: Children’s Fantasy in England”
Cybereditions | 2003-03 | ISBN: 1877275557 | 252 pages | PDF | 1,8 MB
‘The longer I live, the more I am convinced of the importance of children’s books.’ When Robert Bloomfield wrote this in 1817 he could have had no idea of the range of children’s books to come, nor of how in England fantasy would be their outstanding form. In this survey of 400 English children’s fantasies from 1850 to 2000, taking in authors from the well-known Charles Kingsley, C. S. Lewis and J. K. Rowling to the less-known Annie Keary, Edith Elias and Pete Johnson, Colin Manlove shows just how good their books often are as literature.

He combines new interpretations of individual works with explanations of how and why their character changes over time, reflecting their different cultural settings. This book is intended both as a critical companion for children’s literature courses, and as a stimulus for the general reader and students at all levels. Selected by the editors of CHOICE as an Outstanding Academic Title for 2003. Enjoy this great book! Brought to you by SMIRK Uploading BitRoad

Routledge International Companion to Education by Bob Moon
Publisher: RoutledgeFalmer | Number Of Pages: 1024 | Publication Date: 2000-08-11 | ISBN-10: 041511814X | PDF | 5 Mb

The Routledge International Companion to Education brings together a range of authoritative accounts of key issues facing educationalists as the new century begins. The volume contains almost sixty major contributions exploring issues ranging from early childhood to adult education, from developments in the teaching of reading to challenges of peace education.

The chapters are divided into five topic fields:
*Foundations
*Processes
*Substantive Issues
*Sectors
*Subjects
Each chapter gives a contemporary account of developments in the field, and looks to the future and the directions that new activity and enquiry is likely to take. All the chapters are written from an international perspective.
The world of education is constantly in a state of transformation. The speed of change presents a formidable challenge to anyone looking across the field as a whole or any part of it. In one sense this has always been the case. Educationalists at the end of the last century would have looked with some awe at the expanding educational systems of the developed world and the daunting problems faced in extending educational opportunity to the rapidly growing global population. The early years of the twenty first century face similar challenges. Educational systems continue to expand and parts of the world’s population still yearn for the benefits that formal schooling can bring. The twentieth century represents a period when mass primary and secondary school systems were being established. The twenty first century is likely to be dominated by the proliferation of new structures and organisations serving all years and presenting formal and informal opportunities for teaching and learning in forms that would have been undreamt of a century ago.
The Routledge International Companion to Education aims to address the key issues underpinning the rethinking and restructuring of education at the beginning of the new millennium.

Alan Marzilli, “Drugs and Sports”
Chelsea House Publications | 2008-09-30 | ISBN: 0791095533 | 140 pages | PDF | 1,1 MB

The use of drugs by American athletes has come under increasing scrutiny. As steroids, stimulants, and supplements have become more easily available and salaries and endorsement deals have become more lucrative, it seems that more athletes are availing themselves of substances designed to improve their performance - whether legal or illegal. But what kinds of restrictions and punishments should athletes face?

Should the federal government get involved, or should it be up to professional sports associations to police their members? And is the problem of drugs in sports really just an example of overblown media coverage? “Drugs and Sports” considers these and other issues from different viewpoints in a balanced account of this controversial topic.

Marion Zimmer Bradley, Julian May, Andre Norton “The Black Trillium”
Bantam Spectra | 1991-06-01 | ISBN : 0553290797 | Pages: 503 | PDF | 978.8 kB

Ruwenda is a pleasant, peaceful land-but the magic of its guardian, the Archimage Binah, is waning. Binah must pass along her protectorship to the triplet princess of Ruwenda. She bestows upon the infant girls the power of the rare and mystical Black Trillium-badge of the royal house, symbol of an ancient magic.

While the sisters blossom into beautiful young women, neighboring Labornok use a dark magician to sunder Binah’s protection. As invaders pour into Ruwenda, the Archimage orders the princesses to flee-and changes them to search for three magical talismans which when brought together will be their only chance to regain their kingdom and free its people. Each must accomplish her task separately-and to succeed, each must also confront and conquer the limits of her own soul.
