Ancestor by Scott Sigler (Audiobook)
Publisher: Random House Audio | ISBN: N/A | edition 2010 | MP3 | 293 MB
In Sigler’s timely tale of science run amok, Genada, a renegade biotech firm, is striving to synthesize a proto-mammal similar to the prehistoric entity that all mammalian life sprang from as a source of transplantable organs that the human body won’t reject. Pressured for results before the government shuts down her lab, the firm’s lead medico, Liu Jian Den, introduces something unorthodox into the creature’s genome.
The result: oversized and ravenously hungry embryos that eat their way out of the bovine wombs incubating them. A small band of scientists wind up trapped with the creatures on a Lake Superior island, where they become the prey of predators that pose a threat to life as we know it. Sigler (Contagious) stuffs his story with an overabundance of speculative science, but the cinematic pacing keeps the action relentless and suspenseful. Its many pulpy flourishes notwithstanding, this is that rare horror B-movie of a thriller that compels reading until the final page. 10–15-city author tour.

Christie Ridgway, “The Care and Feeding of Unmarried Men”
Avon | 2006 | ISBN: 0060763507 | 384 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Page Four asks: Which Palm Springs party girl has been caught canoodling with an out-of-town “Adam”?

Eve Caruso keeps her finger on the pulse of Palm Springs and reports every spicy celebrity tidbit to her loyal readers. She knows everyone in this town—except that mysterious hunk who just strolled into the exclusive spa where she’s conferring with hot new starlet Jemima Cargill.
Nash Cargill—nicknamed “The Preacher” by all his rowdy friends—is here to protect his flighty sister from a stalker, not fall for a sexy society columnist. But Eve has the perfect name—she’s wildly tempting. Nash should resist; after all, her luscious lips speak trouble, her two sisters are too interested in their affair, and the rest of her family defines “notorious.” But Eve is more vulnerable than she seems, and Nash has never said “no” to a lady in distress . . .
From Booklist
Can a Mafia princess nicknamed “Party Girl” find common ground with a monster-truck driver called “the Preacher”? Society columnist Eve Caruso has moved back to the family spa in Palm Springs after secretly losing her fortune on an insider trading tip gone wrong. Still grieving for the father she lost at age 12, she doesn’t want anybody to know that now she has lost everything. The only way to stay out of jail is to get the goods on the former lover who is responsible for her financial troubles. This requires mingling with the rich and famous, in spite of her lack of self-confidence. Meanwhile, larger-than-life Nash Cargill, worried that a stalker is after his actress sister, is prowling the grounds of the Kona Kai Spa to keep her safe. Big and brawny, with a good-old-boy demeanor, overly protective Nash can’t stop himself from trying to save Eve. Ridgway continues the fascinating story of the Caruso family, first seen in An Offer He Can’t Refuse (2005). Diana Tixier Herald

The Roots of Obama’s Rage by Dinesh D’Souza (Audiobook)
Publisher: Blackstone Audio | ISBN: 1441761683 | edition 2010 | MP3 | 204 MB
Americans want a president who is a servant — not a monster. But unfortunately, a Hobbesian “leviathan” is exactly what we have, says bestselling author Dinesh D’Souza. In his blockbuster new book, The Obama Leviathan: The Perversion of the American Dream, D’Souza reveals Obama and his leftist cohorts to be the embodiment of Hobbes’s leviathan: a liberal behemoth that is intent on running every aspect of our lives through invasive government policies.
By examining Obama’s domestic, foreign, and social policies, D’Souza exposes how Obama’s philosophy towards government is threatening not only our economic and personal freedom, but America’s national sovereignty. Insightful and compelling, The Obama Leviathan shows readers how they can keep the liberal beast that is Team Obama in check, and how we can take back this great nation and restore her fundamental values.

The era of the Old Republic is a dark and dangerous time, as Jedi Knights valiantly battle the Sith Lords and their ruthless armies. But the Sith have disturbing plans—and none more so than the fulfillment of Darth Scabrous’s fanatical dream, which is about to become nightmarish reality.

Unlike those other Jedi sidelined to the Agricultural Corps—young Jedi whose abilities have not proved up to snuff—Hestizo Trace possesses one extraordinary Force talent: a gift with plants. Suddenly her quiet existence among greenhouse and garden specimens is violently destroyed by the arrival of an emissary from Darth Scabrous. For the rare black orchid that she has nurtured and bonded with is the final ingredient in an ancient Sith formula that promises to grant Darth Scabrous his greatest desire.
But at the heart of the formula is a never-before-seen virus that’s worse than fatal—it doesn’t just kill, it transforms. Now the rotting, ravenous dead are rising, driven by a bloodthirsty hunger for all things living—and commanded by a Sith Master with an insatiable lust for power and the ultimate prize: immortality . . . no matter the cost.

Geometric Algebra: An Algebraic System for Computer Games and Animation
Publisher: S-*-*-r | Pages: 198 | 2009-06-30| ISBN 1848823789 | PDF | 1.3 MB
Geometric algebra is still treated as an obscure branch of algebra and most books have been written by competent mathematicians in a very abstract style. This restricts the readership of such books especially by programmers working in computer graphics, who simply want guidance on algorithm design.
Geometric algebra provides a unified algebraic system for solving a wide variety of geometric problems. John Vince reveals the beauty of this algebraic framework and communicates to the reader new and unusual mathematical concepts using colour illustrations, tabulations, and easy-to-follow algebraic proofs.
The book includes many worked examples to show how the algebra works in practice and is essential reading for anyone involved in designing 3D geometric algorithms.

Michael Nitsche, “Video Game Spaces: Image, Play, and Structure in 3D Worlds”
Publisher: The MIT Press | ISBN: 0262141019 | March 31, 2009 | 312 pages | PDF | 3.3 MB
The move to 3D graphics represents a dramatic artistic and technical development in the history of video games that suggests an overall transformation of games as media. The experience of space has become a key element of how we understand games and how we play them. In Video Game Spaces, Michael Nitsche investigates what this shift means for video game design and analysis.
Navigable 3D spaces allow us to crawl, jump, fly, or even teleport through fictional worlds that come to life in our imagination. We encounter these spaces through a combination of perception and interaction. Drawing on concepts from literary studies, architecture, and cinema, Nitsche argues that game spaces can evoke narratives because the player is interpreting them in order to engage with them. Consequently, Nitsche approaches game spaces not as pure visual spectacles but as meaningful virtual locations. His argument investigates what structures are at work in these locations, proceeds to an in-depth analysis of the audiovisual presentation of game worlds, and ultimately explores how we use and comprehend their functionality.

Albert Einstein, “The Meaning of Relativity”
Mjf Books | 1997 | ISBN: 1567311369 | 166 pages | PDF | 1,7 MB
The world would be a very different place if it were not for Albert Einstein. Like Newton and Galileo before him, this remarkable scientist changed forever mankind’s understanding of the universe. In 1921, five years after proclaiming his general theory of relativity, Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in recognition of his remarkable achievements.
In the same year he travelled to the United States to give four lectures that consolidated his theory and sought to explain its meaning to a new audience. These lectures were published the following year as “The Meaning of Relativity”, which he revised with each new edition until his death. It remains a key work for anyone wishing to discover at first hand the workings of one of the most inspiring minds of the 20th century.

Yaneer Bar-yam, “Dynamics Of Complex Systems”
W.stview Press | 2003 | ISBN: 0813341213 | 864 pages | PDF | 7,1 MB
The study of complex systems in a unified framework has become recognized in recent years as a new scientific discipline, the ultimate in the interdisciplinary fields. Breaking down the barriers between physics, chemistry, and biology and the so-called soft sciences of psychology, sociology, economics and anthropology, this text explores the universal physical and mathematical principles that govern the emergence of complex systems from simple components. Dynamics of Complex Systems is the first text describing the modern unified study of complex systems. It is designed for upper-undergraduate/beginning graduate level students, and covers a broad range of applications in a broad array of disciplines.
A central goal of this text is to develop models and modeling techniques that are useful when applied to all complex systems. This is done by adopting both analytic tools, including statistical mechanics and stochastic dynamics, and computer simulation techniques, such as cellular automata and Monte Carlo. In four sets of paired, self-contained chapters, Yaneer Bar-Yam discusses complex systems in the context of neural networks, protein folding, living organisms, and finally, human civilization itself. He explores fundamental questions about the structure, dynamics, evolution, development and quantitative complexity that apply to all complex systems. In the first chapter, mathematical foundations such as iterative maps and chaos, probability theory and random walks, thermodynamics, information and computation theory, fractals and scaling, are reviewed to enable the text to be read by students and researchers with a variety of backgrounds.

The book includes a set of research and survey articles featuring the recent advances in theory and applications of wireless mesh networking technology which will be a significant component in the next generation (e.g., fourth generation) mobile communication networks.
Wireless mesh networks consist of mesh clients and mesh routers, where the mesh routers form a wireless infrastructure/backbone and interwork with the wired networks to provide multihop wireless Internet connectivity to the mesh clients. Wireless mesh networking has emerged as one of the most promising concept for self-organizing and auto-configurable wireless networking to provide adaptive and flexible wireless Internet connectivity to mobile users. This concept can be used for different wireless access technologies such as IEEE 802.11, 802.15, 802.16-based WLAN, WPAN, and WMAN technologies. Potential application scenarios for wireless mesh networks include access and backhaul support for cellular networks, home networks, enterprise networks, community networks, and intelligent transport system networks. Development of wireless mesh networking technology has to deal with challenging architecture and protocol design issues, and there is an increasing interest on this technology among the researchers in both academia and industry. There are many on-going research projects in different universities and industrial research labs. Also, many startup companies are building mesh networking platforms based on off-the-shelf wireless access technologies and developing demanding applications and services. This book provides a unified view of the state-of-the-art achievements in the area of wireless mesh networking technology.

Everyday Engineering: An Ethnography of Design and Innovation (Inside Technology) by Dominique Vinck
Publisher: The MIT Press; illustrated edition (June 1, 2003) | ISBN: 0262220652 | Pages: 255 | PDF | 1.81 MB

Everyday Engineering was written to help future engineers understand what they are going to be doing in their everyday working lives, so that they can do their work more effectively and with a broader social vision. It will also give sociologists deeper insights into the sociotechnical world of engineering. The book consists of ethnographic studies in which the authors, all trained in both engineering and sociology, go into the field as participant-observers. The sites and types of engineering explored include mechanical design in manufacturing industries, instrument design, software debugging, environmental management within companies, and the implementation of a system for separating household waste. The book is organized in three parts. The first part introduces the complexity of technical practices. The second part enters the social and cultural worlds of designers to grasp their practices and motivations. The third part examines the role of writing practices and graphical representation. The epilogue uses the case studies to raise a series of questions about how objects can be taken into account in sociological analyses of human organizations.

James F. Kurose, Keith W. Ross, “Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach, 5 Edition”
AdnW-ey 2009 | ISBN-10: 0136079679 | 864 Pages | Djvu | 19,8 MB
Certain data-communication protocols hog the spotlight, but all of them have a lot in common. Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach Featuring the Internet explains the engineering problems that are inherent in communicating digital information from point to point. The top-down approach mentioned in the subtitle means that the book starts at the top of the protocol stack–at the application layer–and works its way down through the other layers, until it reaches bare wire.

The authors, for the most part, shun the well-known seven-layer Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) protocol stack in favor of their own five-layer (application, transport, network, link, and physical) model. It’s an effective approach that helps clear away some of the hand waving traditionally associated with the more obtuse layers in the OSI model. The approach is definitely theoretical–don’t look here for instructions on configuring Windows 2000 or a Cisco router–but it’s relevant to reality, and should help anyone who needs to understand networking as a programmer, system architect, or even administration guru.
The treatment of the network layer, at which routing takes place, is typical of the overall style. In discussing routing, authors James Kurose and Keith Ross explain (by way of lots of clear, definition-packed text) what routing protocols need to do: find the best route to a destination. Then they present the mathematics that determine the best path, show some code that implements those algorithms, and illustrate the logic by using excellent conceptual diagrams. Real-life implementations of the algorithms–including Internet Protocol (both IPv4 and IPv6) and several popular IP routing protocols–help you to make the transition from pure theory to networking technologies. — David Wall

Applications of Random Matrices in Physics (NATO Science Series II: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry)
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 1402045298 | edition 2006 | PDF | 517 pages | 6.3 mb
Random matrices are widely and successfully used in physics for almost 60-70 years, beginning with the works of Dyson and Wigner. Although it is an old subject, it is constantly developing into new areas of physics and mathematics. It constitutes now a part of the general culture of a theoretical physicist.
Mathematical methods inspired by random matrix theory become more powerful, sophisticated and enjoy rapidly growing applications in physics. Recent examples include the calculation of universal correlations in the mesoscopic system, new applications in disordered and quantum chaotic systems, in combinatorial and growth models, as well as the recent breakthrough, due to the matrix models, in two dimensional gravity and string theory and the non-abelian gauge theories. The book consists of the lectures of the leading specialists and covers rather systematically many of these topics. It can be useful to the specialists in various subjects using random matrices, from PhD students to confirmed scientists.

Professional Oracle Programming (Programmer to Programmer)
Publisher: Hungry Minds Inc | ISBN: 0764574825 | edition 2005 | PDF | 793 pages | 12,8 mb
WebWork helps developers build well-designed applications quickly by creating re-usable, modular, web-based applications. WebWork in Action is the first book to focus entirely on WebWork. Like a true “Action” book, it is both a tutorial on WebWork and a sourcebook for its use in demanding, real-world applications. The book goes into considerable depth on how to get desirable web features with WebWork. It uses the same basic (continuing) example as in Manning’s Hibernate in Action to show how to integrate WebWork with the popular Hibernate persistance framework.
Although Java was (correctly) touted as the next big programming language, it wasn’t until the introduction of J2EE and Servlets that its use really took off. Yet, in spite of the huge popularity of JSPs and Servlets, it was never easy for developers to quickly create re-usable, modular web-based applications. Not long after the introduction of JSPs, WebWork sought to solve those very problems and has been helping thousands of developers ever since. WebWork is a web-application framework used by people who understand that somewhere been “just get it done, no matter how ugly” and “make it perfect” lies their best choice. WebWork helps developers build applications quickly, but its unique design also lets developers build beautifully-designed applications.

Vinyasa Flow Yoga: Gentle Power on the Beach with Christina Pedersen, Cami, Chrystyn Chandler
DVD | VOB | 76 mins | English | 720×480 | 29.97fps | 6500Kbps | Mp3 128Kbps | 3.2Gb
Genre: Video Training
Ignite your life force and purify your body through the union of breath and movement. Christina Pedersen offers you a unique and complete yoga practice designed to strengthen, tone and detoxify the body while reconnecting with your breath and calming your mind. Christina is a Kripalu certified yoga instructor who has been practicing yoga since 1996.
She is strongly influenced by the Iyengar, Ashtanga and Kripalu traditions and has interwoven aspects of these into this Vinyasa Flow practice. Christina believes that finding and maintaining a deep, full breath is the secret in attaining a fulfilling yoga practice and a truly peaceful state of being.
This Vinyasa Flow DVD is ideal for those seeking an invigorating home yoga practice. The practice begins with deep breathing and centering, followed by warm-up stretches and the asana series. Christina concludes with a restorative, relaxing guided meditation and Savasana. The unique combination of pranyama (breathing), asana (physical postures) and relaxation will leave you feeling calm, yet energized.
“I hope that this yoga DVD will add an exciting dimension to your home yoga practice. It is an offering of yoga from my heart to yours, and may it be one small piece of your self-discovery puzzle… Namaste!” ~ Christina Pedersen, RYT., San Diego Ca., Feb, 2008
You can choose between two instructional styles, detailed or asana timing only, and you can choose your music from several beautiful tracks.
***Practice DVD***: after you have listened to the detailed instructional sound track you switch to the asana timing sound track. This helps you get into the body through your yoga practice and out of your critical mind. This DVD also lets you choose the beautiful music that inspires you “today” …
“It is the first one I have found which allows the viewer to select type of music AS WELL AS instructional level, which I found keeps me coming back for more. On this video, there are three levels of instruction available, as well as three varied musicians. (For example:you might choose to have as your only audible cue the NAME of each asana, rather than having to listen to detailed instruction.) In addition, Pedersen has a soothing, motivating voice — ideal for creating the atmosphere most of us are seeking in a great Vinyasa video. The flow itself is terrific; fluid movements and the requisite sun salutations set you on your journey, followed later by the necessary advanced balance poses and SUPER core work. This video really stands out as the one that covers ALL the bases — perfect for all ages — welcoming, yet challenging. Highly recommended!”
“This video is ideal for anyone who wants to practice yoga at their own pace – in their own space. What’s really cool is that you can choose to have Chrissy’s groovy soothing voice lead you into all poses each time you watch it, or you can change the background and music to just have timed-poses with no instruction. This makes a huge difference when you are watching this over and over again. The way this video combines a gentle Kripalu approach with a flowing Vinyasa style really helps to individualize a workout, energization level and sense of being each time you watch it. Practice yoga with this and you’ll find your flow!”

Anjum Anand – Indian Food Made Easy : Series 2 (2008)
English | 2h 54mn | 608 x 336 | AVI XVID 1129 Kbps | MP3 128 Kbps | 1.37 GB
Genre: eLearning

| “ |
Following on from the success of Indian Food Made Easy, this second series takes Anjum on a journey to show how different regional flavours of the Indian subcontinent can be found up and down the country – from Gujarati cuisine in London to the spicy flavours of the Punjab found in Glasgow. |
” |
Anjum Anand grew up in London and Switzerland and regularly visits family in Delhi and Calcutta. She worked in the trend-setting Café Spice in New York and for Tommy Tang and the Mondrian Hotel in Los Angeles. Anjum is the host of “Indian Food Made Easy” on BBC and now on Food Network’s sister station, The Cooking Channel, twice a day on Thursdays.
Through her cookery shows and books, Anjum has made Indian food more accessible to the British public. Her preference for simple home-style cooking has seen her inject her extensive knowledge of traditional and regional Indian cooking into television work. Anjum is determined to change public perception of Indian cuisine as heavy and difficult to cook. She follows the Ayurvedic approach to food and well-being and applies its principles to her cooking, preferring to keep dishes light, fresh and healthy.
Episode 1 – Keralan Cuisine
Anjum heads to Liverpool to meet Lyn, who works as a cook in the local hospital. Lyn often cooks traditional English food at charity events, and she is hoping to raise some money by selling hot food at a stall on Liverpool’s biggest farmers’ market. Only this time she is going to be cooking Indian food. Liverpool is home to a large community of Keralans, and Anjum puts together a menu of classic South Indian dishes. There is sumptuous coconut chicken fry, delicious salmon fish wraps, and vegetable and rice noodles cooked in a mild broth. First though, Anjum and Lyn head off to meet two local Keralans who are fantastic home cooks: Bina shows them how to make hot Keralan pickles whilst Jessy demonstrates how to make a fabulous salmon curry in a traditional Keralan clay pot. Finally, with 5000 people passing through the gates of the farmers’ market, Lyn has to rise to the occasion and get them buying her Indian food.
Episode 2 – Gujarati Cuisine
In this episode we head to Leicester to meet Michael Scott, known as ‘Scottie’ to his friends. Scottie is captain of one of Leicester’s oldest rugby clubs – Stoneygate. Every month they have a team curry night at the club but usually rely on takeaways, so Anjum convinces Scottie to make his own meal for the players. She takes him on a gastronomic journey to find out more about the cuisine that is enjoyed by Leicester’s 20,000-strong Gujarati community. Having tasted some local delicacies, she teaches him how to make a fabulous Gujarati classic – Undihyo, a one-pot vegetarian dish.
Then its off to meet Daxa, a Gujarati housewife, who reveals how to make delicious onion bhajis, and the secrets of a Gujarati thali. For Scottie’s main course it’s a hearty lamb curry with fenugreek dumplings, and chips with cashew nuts. Finally, can Scottie cook up a feast for his 15 curry-loving team mates?
Episode 3 – Bengali Cuisine
In this episode we head to London to meet James Moody, who loves having dinner parties and is a bit of a foodie, but would never cook Indian food as he finds it far too complicated. With Brick Lane on his doorstep, it’s an opportunity for Anjum to show him how to cook up a Bengali feast. First they visit the restaurant of top Bengali chef Udit Sarkhel, and the chance for a hands-on experience making keema stuffed mashed potatoes. Then in Anjum’s kitchen he starts off learning how to make a fabulous butternut squash dish with chickpeas. A quick trip to Brick Lane and some fantastic fish dishes gets him into groove of fish curry, which the Bengalis love. Back in the kitchen, it’s time for James to learn how to make his own fish curry, as well as a fabulous dish of prawns, coconut and mustard. With his friends waiting for their meal in the garden, James struggles to make good that which he has learnt, but what will his friends think?
Episode 4 – Punjabi Cuisine
In this episode we head to Edinburgh to meet Wendy Barrie. Wendy is a champion of Scottish food and a bit of a local celebrity, her cookery demonstrations being extremely popular. She has never cooked Indian food before, but has decided to go on a voyage of culinary discovery in order to demonstrate three Indian dishes to her many fans at one of Scotland’s biggest gardening festivals. Glasgow and Edinburgh are home to a large Punjabi community, so Anjum takes Wendy to get a real flavour of the local cuisine. First they meet Tony Singh, one of Scotland’s best chefs to find out all about the secrets of how to make rotis or Indian breads. Then it’s off to meet Tasnim, a maths teacher at her local school, but a wonderful home cook who shows Wendy how to make pecoras. Back in her kitchen, Anjum shows Wendy how to make a fabulous tarka dal, luscious chicken in spinach and a twist on a Scottish dessert, Punjabi cranachan. Finally it’s the day of the festival, and almost 100 people turn up to watch Wendy’s demonstration. She’s got just an hour to cook the three dishes. With Anjum watching nervously in the audience, will she pull it off?
Episode 5 – Goan Cuisine
In this episode we head to London to meet Jonathon Readman, who two years ago married his Goan wife, Lorraine. Jonathon never cooks but every Sunday takes full advantage of his Indian connection by enjoying a Goan feast at mother-in-law Clara’s house. Now it’s payback time, and Jonathon is going to attempt to cook for her and his family himself. First it’s a trip to top Goan restaurant Ma Goa to discover the secrets of dry-roasting spices, before he’s in the kitchen learning his first dish, easy fried spicy aubergines. Then it’s a hilarious insight into the extraordinary methods of making prized Goan sausages, before Jonathon gets thrown into the deep end, learning how to make a delicious, authentic Vindaloo – very different to the sort found in British restaurants. Finally Jonathon gets cracking on the ultimate test – cooking for the mother-in-law, and she’s not easily impressed.
Episode 6 – Kashmiri Cuisine
Anjum heads to Bradford to meet Jessica, a volunteer chef on board a classic steam train that winds its way through the stunning Yorkshire dales. She and her team have never given the 50 or so fee-paying guests who dine on the train an Indian menu, but now she wants to give it a go. Bradford is home to a large community of Kashmiris, and Anjum puts together a menu of fabulous Kashmiri dishes. First up is a traditional Rogan Josh, rich, hearty and full of flavour. Jessica plans to serve it on the train with a pilaf, so she and Anjum visit the restaurant kitchens of Mohammed Aslam, a local Kashmiri chef, to find out how to make the perfect rice dish. Then back in the kitchen Jessica discovers how to make delicious peppers, stuffed with spicy paneer an Indian cheese. For dessert there is angel vermicelli, topped with orange cream. Finally with a packed train eagerly waiting their first Indian feast as it chugs through the countryside, Jessica has a battle in front of her to get it all cooked on time in her tiny kitchen.

Mastering JXTA: Building Java Peer-to-Peer Applications
Publisher: Wiley | ISBN: 0471250848 | edition 2002-08-15 | PDF | 552 pages | 14,9 mb
A comprehensive, code-intensive guide to building commercial-quality peer-to-peer applications with JXTA and Java
Tens of millions of people use peer-to-peer (P2P) applications such as KaZaA, AOL Instant Messenger, and Distributed.net.
These applications harness the idle CPU cycles of their host computers to produce enormous databases of information, build powerful processing engines, and enable communication and file-sharing among users around the world. Previously, P2P applications have been built using proprietary technologies and protocols, forcing developers to start from scratch each time they write a new application. Now JXTA, an open source, P2P development technology, enables developers to build P2P applications using Java, XML, and other industry standards.
With this invaluable book, Joseph Gradecki provides a practical guide to building peer-to-peer applications using Java. He provides detailed descriptions of the JXTA technologies and demonstrates how to build real-world applications. This book also includes:
* Detailed descriptions of the JXTA specification and the Java reference implementation
* The complete P2P development process, including how to build reusable application frameworks
* Fully functional example applications, including a distributed computational engine that can utilize the idle CPU power of thousands of remote machines to solve complex problems, and a fault-tolerant, encrypted network storage system
The companion Web site includes:
* All the code listings and complete applications from the book
* Links to additional JXTA and P2P resources

Alexander the Great and the Hellenistic Age (Audiobook) By Professor Jeremy McInerney
Publisher: The Teac hing Com pany 2001 | 12 hours and 19 mins | ISBN: 1565853229 | MP3 | 354 MB
This series of lectures examines a crucial period in the history of the ancient world, the age ushered in by the extraordinary conquests of Alexander the Great.

In all the annals of the ancient world, few stories are more gripping than that of the Hellenistic Age. Between the conquests of Alexander the Great and the rise of Rome, Greek culture became the heart of a world-historical civilization whose intellectual, spiritual, and artistic influence endures to this day.
Caesar’s Shame
Julius Caesar lamented when he was in his early 30s that by his age Alexander had conquered the world, “and I have done nothing.”
In just 10 years, this young prince from the small, hill kingdom of Macedon subdued the largest tract of the earth’s surface ever conquered by one individual. His vast empire—encompassing all or part of 23 present-day countries—stretched from Mount Olympus and the Sahara Desert to the frontiers of India and Central Asia.
In the opening lectures, we explore the enigma of Alexander, son of a brilliant father, yet always at odds with the man whom he succeeded. We trace his early campaigns against the Persians and follow him to Egypt, where he was acclaimed as the son of god.
We look at his career after this and find in him a blend of greatness and madness as he strove to replace the Persian empire of the Achaemenid dynasty with a new, mixed ruling class of Macedonians and Persians.
Alexander’s death in 323 BC ushered in a period of catastrophic change as ambitious warlords carved up Alexander’s realm into their own separate empires. It is said that as the 33-year-old Alexander lay dying in Babylon in 323 B.C., he was asked who would inherit his empire. “The strongest,” he answered.
Their struggle created three kingdoms, ruled by a small group of Macedonian nobles, that spanned from the eastern Mediterranean to the Hindu Kush:
- Ptolemaic Egypt (323-31 B.C.), whose last ruler was Cleopatra
- Seleucid Syria (323-64 B.C.), whose attack on the Temple in Jerusalem in 166 B.C. led to the Maccabean revolt
- The Attalid Empire in Asia Minor (281-133 B.C.), which, while smaller than the other two, produced a cultural flourishing in its capital Pergamum that rivaled Alexandria in Egypt.
North Africa. In the Nile valley, the Ptolemies played the role of pharaohs and were treated by their subjects as gods. At the same time, however, their capital, Alexandria, was cut off from Egypt and run by Greek bureaucrats. Greek culture thrived here in the museum and library, and the Ptolemies were great patrons of the arts. The library itself boasted half a million books.
The Middle East. In the Seleucid empire, the rulers also built Greek cities, such as Antioch, but in older regions, including Mesopotamia, they too were ready to be worshipped as living gods. On the edges of the Hellenistic world, in places as far away as Afghanistan and Pakistan, Greek cities grew up around trading posts and military settlements. Here, philosophy and literature from old Greece went hand in hand with gymnasiums and theaters to plant Greek culture far from the Mediterranean. By military and cultural conquest, then, much of central Asia was incorporated into the Greek world.
Despite the geographic extent of this civilization, we see that the heartland remained the eastern Mediterranean. It was here, in such new cities as Alexandria and Pergamum and such old ones as Athens, that Greek culture developed its distinctive Hellenistic appearance.
