TagsModern Astronomy Expanding The Universe   [edit]

Astronomy poses many of the same questions that religion does, the deepest questions a human being can ask: What is the universe? How big is it? How did it begin? How will it end? What part do we play in it? Are we alone? Through most of history, in fact, astronomy was part of religion. The astronomers of ancient times usually were priests. Astronomy in the 20th century changed humans' understanding as profoundly as Copernicus and Galileo did. At the start of the century, soon after George Ellery Hale, the first astronomer covered in this book, built his first large telescope, people thought the solar system was essentially at the center of the universe, much as people of Copernicus's time had believed the Earth was. By the end of the century, that picture had altered completely. Astronomers had shown that the Sun is a rather average star, located on one of the Milky Way's spiral arms rather than in the galaxy's center. The solar system is one of an untold number of planetary systems. Similarly, the Milky Way is just one among billions of galaxies. Those galaxies, in turn, are mere specks compared to vast masses of invisible, or "dark," matter surrounding them, whose nature is completely unknown. Read more...

TagsImplementing Database Security and Auditing   [edit]

This book is about database security and auditing. You will learn many methods and techniques that will be helpful in securing, monitoring and auditing database environments. It covers diverse topics that include all aspects of database security and auditing - including network security for databases, authentication and authorization issues, links and replication, database Trojans, etc. You will also learn of vulnerabilities and attacks that exist within various database environments or that have been used to attack databases (and that have since been fixed). These will often be explained to an internals level. There are many sections which outline the anatomy of an attack before delving into the details of how to combat such an attack. Equally important, you will learn about the database auditing landscape both from a business and regulatory requirements perspective as well as from a technical implementation perspective. * Useful to the database administrator and/or security administrator - regardless of the precise database vendor (or vendors) that you are using within your organization. * Has a large number of examples - examples that pertain to Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, Sybase and even MySQL.. * Many of the techniques you will see in this book will never be described in a manual or a book that is devoted to a certain database product. * Addressing complex issues must take into account more than just the database and focusing on capabilities that are provided only by Read more...

TagsProbability Demystified   [edit]

Many people do not understand the basic concepts of probability, as evidenced by the proliferation of those participating in lotteries, horse racing, and gambling at casinos. But probability and statistics are becoming increasingly important in today's society. As the basic ideas are being taught in elementary schools through college, it's important that everyone has a basic understanding of probability theory. Probability theory explains the happenings that occur due to chance. Although it is not possible to predict for certain the individual outcome of a chance process, it is possible to determine outcomes in the "long run," and to predict the probability that something will eventually occur. This book will present the basics of probability in a non-rigorous manner. Only an understanding of arithmetic and some basic algebra are necessary to learn these ideas. No high-powered mathematical notation or formal proofs will be used, rather the concepts will be developed from examples using coins, dice, cards, and other common probability devices. DON'T ROLL THE DICE LEARNING PROBABILITY! Now anyone who ever flipped a coin, played cards, or placed a bet can grasp the principles that govern probability -- without formal training, unlimited time, or an Einstein IQ. In "Probability Demystified, experienced math instructor Allan Bluman provides an illuminating and entertaining way to master chance, odds, and predictability. With "Probability Demystified, you learn the subject one Read more...

From supernovae and gamma-ray bursts to the accelerating Universe, this is an exploration of the intellectual threads that lead to some of the most exciting ideas in modern astrophysics and cosmology. This fully updated second edition incorporates new material on binary stars, black holes, gamma-ray bursts, worm-holes, quantum gravity and string theory. It covers the origins of stars and their evolution, the mechanisms responsible for supernovae, and their progeny, neutron stars and black holes. It examines the theoretical ideas behind black holes and their manifestation in observational astronomy and presents neutron stars in all their variety known today. This book also covers the physics of the twentieth century, discussing quantum theory and Einstein's gravity, how these two theories collide, and the prospects for their reconciliation in the twenty-first century. This will be essential reading for undergraduate students in astronomy and astrophysics, and an excellent, accessible introduction for a wider audience. From Publishers Weekly Supernovae occur when a star blows up: in its death throes, a star gone supernova "becomes as bright as an entire galaxy." University of Texas astrophysicist Wheeler is one of the world's experts on such stellar explosions and the forces behind them. This accessible, painstaking work of astronomical exposition brings to a general readership Wheeler's knowledge of stars, supernovae and their cousins. The first chapter covers the life Read more...

"Ship Construction" is a comprehensive text for students following BTEC courses in nautical science, naval architecture and shipbuilding, and courses leading to BSc (Nautical Science) or Extra Masters Certificate. The author presents seven sections that begin with an introduction to ship building and conclude with the finished product. There is a concise description of all the relevant international regulations. The seven sections cover the development of ship types, materials and strengths of ships, welding and cutting, shipyard practice, ship structure and outfitting. Each section is broken down into several chapters that explore the topics in depth. The fifth edition expands further on the development of ship types over the last few years - discussion focussing on the latest views on bulk carrier safety. Welding and shipyard practices have been reviewed and revised in line with current practice. In addition, the book covers all the latest IMO and SOLAS information. It follows, chapter by chapter, the construction of a ship from start to finish. It is essential for both nautical students and professional students of naval architecture. Reviews Nautical Magazine, August 2001 'This book has to be the ultimate in ship construction, very informative and in reviewing this volume I can say that during my studies I have come across other books on the subject, but in my opinion none as good as this." 'This book is a comprehensive text exploring the complete ship constr Read more...
