Robert Anson Heinlein (July 7, 1907 - May 8, 1988) was one of the most popular, influential, and controversial authors of "hard" science fiction. He set a high standard for science and engineering plausibility and helped to raise the genre's standards of literary quality. He was the first writer to break into mainstream, general magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post, in the late 1940s, with unvarnished science fiction. He was among the first authors of bestselling, novel-length science fiction in the modern, mass-market era. For many years, Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, and Arthur C. Clarke were known as the "Big Three" of science fiction.
Within the framework of his science fiction stories Heinlein repeatedly integr

In this book, Denis Serre begins by providing a clean and concise introduction to the basic theory of matrices. He then goes on to give many interesting applications of matrices to different aspects of mathematics and also other areas of science and engineering. The book mixes together algebra, analysis, complexity theory and numerical analysis. As such, this book will provide many scientists, not just mathematicians, with a useful and reliable reference. It is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students with either applied or theoretical goals. This book is based on a course given by the author at the Ecole Normale Superieure de Lyon. Denis Serre is Professor of Mathematics at Ecole Normale Superieure de Lyon and a former member of the Institut Universaire de France. He is a member of numerous editorial boards and the author of Systems of Conservation Laws (Cambridge University Press 2000). The present book is a translation of the original French edition, Les Matrices: Theorie et Pratique, published by Dunod (2001).
From the reviews:
"This is a first-year graduate text that will be of considerable value to students with any of a wide variety of potential research objectives. Both the proofs and the general explanations are unusually detailed:There are 165 well-designed exercises, many of which provide additional information on topics treated in the text." Draft of "Mathematics of the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT)," by J.O. Smith, CCRMA, Stanford, Winter 2002. The latest draft as linked HTML version are available on-line at http://www-ccrma.stanford.edu/~jos/mdft/.
Book Excerpts:
The Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) can be understood as a numerical approximation to the Fourier Transform. However, the DFT has its own exact Fourier theory, which is the main focus of this book. The DFT is normally encountered in practice as the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) -- a high-speed algorithm for computing the DFT. The FFT is used extensively in a wide range of digital signal processing applications, including spectrum analysis, high-speed convolution (linear filtering), filter banks, signal detection and estimation, system identification, audio compression (e.g., MPEG-II AAC), spectral modeling sound synthesis, and many other applications; some of these will be discussed in Chapter 8.
This book chooses to discuss DFT over the FT since the FT demands readers to use calculus right off the bat, while the DFT, on the other hand, replaces the infinite integral with a finite sum of various quantities. Calculus is not needed to define the DFT (or its inverse, as this book will show), and with finite summation limits, readers cannot encounter difficulties with infinities. Moreover, in the field of digital signal processing, signals and spectra are processed only in sampled form, so that the DFT is what readers really need anyway. In s

Kanji Power presents the level 1 and 2 joyo kanji, which Japanese kids learn in their first two years of school. Learning by frequency of occurence (such as with many of the kanji cards available) may be a better approach, depending on your goals. If you want to read children's books and the like, go with the joyo ordering -- you'll get furigana for higher-level kanji.
The presentation is fairly rote, like how it's taught in the schools, which will prove more effective for some than others. I personally need mnemonics and am interested in how the kanjis came to be, but I have Kanji Pictographix and Read Japanese Today for this purpose.

The providing a comprehensive overview of the mathematical theory of Fourier analysis, with straightforward verifications of its results and formulas, and clear indications of the limitations of those results of formulas. Designed to help readers to handle more sophisticated mathematics. DLC: Fourier analysis.
Fourier analysis is one of the most useful and widely employed sets of tools for the engineer, the scientist, and the applied mathematician. As such, students and practitioners in these disciplines need a practical and mathematically solid introduction to its principles. They need straightforward verifications of its results and formulas, and they need clear indications of the limitations of those results and formulas. Principles of Fourier Analysis furnishes all this and more. It provides a comprehensive overview of the mathematical theory of Fourier analysis, including the development of Fourier series, "classical" Fourier transforms, generalized Fourier transforms and analysis, and the discrete theory. Much of the author's development is strikingly different from typical presentations. His approach to defining the classical Fourier transform results in a much cleaner, more coherent theory that leads naturally to a starting point for the generalized theory. He also introduces a new generalized theory based on the use of Gaussian test functions that yields an even more general -yet simpler -theory than usually presented. This book is based around the author's beautiful and sometimes awe-inspiring color images and mosaics of deep-sky objects.
The images were used as the basis of a public exhibition held at the University of Southampton (Summer 2006), attended by the press, local radio and TV interviewers as well as the public. The book describes how similar images can be created by amateur astronomers, using commercially available telescopes and CCD cameras. Subsequent processing and image enhancement in the "electronic darkroom" is covered in detail as well.
Not everybody can afford the biggest and best telescopes and CCD cameras, so a range of telescopes and equipment is considered, from the author's 11-inch with Hyperstar camera, down to more affordable instruments.
Appendices provide links to free software - not available from a single source - and are themselves an invaluable resource.
About the Author
Professor Greg Parker is Head of the Nanoscale Systems Integration Group at Southampton University in Southern England. His deep sky astronomical images have been published in Astronomy Now and Sky at Night magazines. He is the author of Introductory Semiconductor Device Physics (IOP, ISBN 0750310219), and has written many scientific papers and articles, mostly in the area of photonics and optoelectronics, as well as a chapter (Guided-wave Optical Communications: Materials) in Elsevier's Encyclopaedia of Materials: Science and Technology.
